    Chapter 1 Part 1

"C'mon, we don't have much time left!" Drew screamed as the water crashed through the house's windows, "Jasmine, please, don't let go of me!"
Jasmine glanced behind her to see all her possessions being tossed and mangled by the water currents. The foam swept up everything in a rush as it swirled towards them. She grasped her bulging stomach, heaving for air as she ran through the front door of she and her husband's house.
"Drew, Drew, I can't do this! I can't!" Jasmine gasped.
"Jassie, you're going to do this! I'm not losing either of you!" Drew replied, thrusting her arm forward and forcing her to keep running.
As they scaled the large hill in their front yard, Jasmine looked back once again, this time, at a massive ocean where her house once stood. The waves crashed up against the hill, and ceased to rise, "Drew, it's stopping. It's stopping, please stop running."
Drew turned and slowed his pace. He eventually stopped and sat on the ground, gulping air through his lungs as he place a hand on his chest. His eyes laid directly on the wide blue expanse before them. Jasmine fell next to him, laying on her side and holding her belly in pain, "Oh Drew, he didn't handle that run well."
Drew looked to her with care and rubbed her stomach gently, "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry, I just didn't want to lose him or you."
Jasmine laid her head on the grass and turned her eyes upward. A group of people began climbing down the hill towards them, rushing to their aid. Drew waved his hand towards them to show they were all right.
Jasmine glanced once more at the sea, and then fainted into the grass.

    ^^ I wasn't done, lol.

    Chapter 1 Part 2

When she woke, her eyes wavered and then focused on the person in the bed next to her. She was on her side, looking directly at Jasmine, "Well, hello dear. It's nice to see someone with a good reason to be in the hospital."
"Hospital?" Jasmine questioned. She sat up, realizing her belly was gone, "Wha ... where's my baby? My baby!"
A nurse came to her screams, "Shhh, calm down, you went unconscious as soon as you started to go into labor. Your baby is fine; we have the finest doctors here. I'll bring him over to you as soon as I can."
Jasmine shook her head; "I want to see him now. Where am I? Where's my husband, Drew?"
The nurse smiled and smoothed Jasmine's hair, "You're at the emergency hospital in New Haven. When you passed out and began labor, the doctors in East Lyme couldn't help you out because of so many wounded coming in from the disaster, so they sent you here. I personally made sure they took special care of you and your baby. My name's Irene. If you need anything, just let me know, OK?"
"O-OK, thank you," Jasmine sighed, looking into her eyes, "Is my husband all right?"
Just as she said this, a doctor called out to Irene, "I'll come back as soon as I can," and with that, she left to another patient.
Jasmine searched around for signs of Drew. People with missing limbs and blood was a frequent sight in the makeshift hospital tent. The wind drafted an ocean smell, so she knew they weren't far from the dead zone. She became frantic as she saw less and less signs of Drew. She tried to move, but her torso was in so much pain. She lifted her sheets to see a huge scar cut into her belly. 'A C-section,' she thought. She let them fall again as an Arabian-looking doctor walked towards her, blood smeared all over his white button up shirt and pants.
"Hello, Jasmine, I'm Dr. Kaluki. I need to speak with you about your husband," he said, politely reaching out his hand for a respectful shake.
She took his hand, and then looked him in the eye, "What happened to him?"
"Here's the situation, Jasmine. The flooding is becoming, hectic, and very dangerous. We have been trying our best to keep moving the hospital camp farther up the mountainsides, but it's hard with the water level rising so quickly. The shore homes, where you lived, were only the beginning. Soon, this entire area in which we stand right now will be submerged in the frozen water from the Arctic," he stated.
"Dr. K., I know what's going on. I'm right here, witnessing what's happening just as much as you are," Jasmine replied hastily.
"What you don't know," Dr. Kaluki continued, "is that with so many wounded, we can't save everyone. Most are dying off as we move farther up in feet, and now we are going to have a massive movement into the Appalachians, where there is a very large boat. This boat is the human race's last hope. We can't stop the flooding, and by God I bet every person would have conserved fuel if they had known it would have caused such a disaster as this, but we can't change the past, can we?"
Jasmine nodded, "Please, tell me what's wrong with my husband."
"There is nothing wrong with him, Jasmine. We simply needed healthy men to help with the move. The thing is, he's gone, a far ways from here. They're going to bring down rescue crews to get you and the rest of the wounded out of here as quick as possible. We might not see him for days, if they survive through the wilderness and the city expanses," Dr. Kaluki continued, "In short, your husband is going to try to save all of us down here, with about ten more men. Until then, we can't move, and only pray that the water level stays low enough until they return."
"Drew..." Jasmine whispered, "Please, did he see our child? Did he come see me before he left?"
"He saw you, but your child needed care. He couldn't see the child. I'm sorry."
Jasmine let out a gasp. If he didn't survive the trip to and back for the rescue crews, he would never see his son. She then stared out into the ocean, only about a half-mile out from their current position, "Dr. Kaluki, let me have my child."
He sighed, releasing her hand, "Bring her son, Diana," he called to one of the nurses.
"My child will survive, and he will see his father," Jasmine stated, with no falter or worry in her voice. Her powerful black eyes met his, and the doctor had to look away.
"I now see where the boy gets his eyes," Dr. Kaluki said, and then turned and walked away.

    Chapter 1 Part 3

Becky walked around frantically, searching for her mother, "Mommy? Mommy!" she called.
No one answered. People sighed at her and shook their heads at her, but no one offered a hand of assistance to her. Becky ran across the field towards a bunch of orange suited men loading a land rover, "Help me. I can't find my mommy."
One of the men glanced at her quickly, and then spoke with his back towards her, "Go ask one of the people by the bonfire, little girl. I can't help you. I'm doing important things right now."
Becky released a tear from one of her eyes, "What kind of helpers are you?" she whispered. She ran across to the bonfire where people huddled in shivers. She searched the stone faces of despair and sadness of loss. A couple cupped each other's hands as the man kissed her head softly. Becky longed for her mother's touch once more, "Mommy?!"
She then saw a glint of a shiny object from one of the decomposing bodies being dragged towards a ditch by a group of surviving men. She walked over, and then let out a scream. Her mother's hand waved lifelessly in the wind as her engagement ring flashed at Becky's eyes. She crumpled to the ground, crying softly as no one even bothered to go to her as there were screaming lost children everywhere. Becky looked at the water spots on the dirt ground. She cupped them, seeing her reflection in the pool of tears. The shy 11 year old face peered out towards her, dirt smudged all over her well-set cheekbones and fine, soft black hair. Her braids fell silently around her as she noticed all the scratches and bumps all over her arms and shoulders from running from the water.
Her eyes looked back up to the blue, cloudless sky, 'Such a beautiful day,' she thought, 'for the most terrible of events.'

Very imaginitive...although I absolutely had no clue what was going on in the first part of chapter 1.

Well, it's just to get you right in the action.
I've already published this book, but I like to see others reactions to it.

    Chapter 1 Part 4 and 5

Karina grabbed her friend's shoulder, "Tina! Don't stare! It's impolite!"
Tina's eyes averted from the crying girl in the dirt, "Karina, who cares about being polite? We're all about to die..."
Karina spat at her, "You shut that mouth of yours! What a time to be morbid!"
Tina shrugged her off. She looked on again to the little girl with the black haired braids, crying in the dirt. She was cupping something in her hands, talking to it. She was convinced the little girl lost her mind. She shook her head and walked over to their car, which was dusted over with remains of their belongings.
Tina dropped her head to the side at the door and said, "Hello stranger."
A blond-streaked hair boy with shining gray eyes looked up at her, "Bothering Karina?"
"Of course. She's been so anal ever since the flood came," Tina opened the door and sat on his lap, "Are you OK?"
"Yeah, it's just hard, not seeing my parents anymore, you know? I don't know, I know I should be sad, but I just can't get myself to cry or anything. It's just how it is. This feels so dream-like right now."
Tina wiped a strain of hair from his face, "You saved my life, Mitch. I won't forget that."
Mitch took his hand to her chin and brought her closer, "I don't want you to ever forget it, if it makes you love me more. I lost two of the three people I love the most. Don't let me lose the last thing I love."
Tina smiled wide and kissed him hard. Her eyes still caught hold of the little girl though, "Mitch, let's go get that girl. I would hate to be alone in the world like that."
Mitch eyed her, "19 and acting motherly? I hope to God you're not pregnant, at a time of all times."
Tina punched his chest, "Do you ever stop joking, even in the most awful of situations?"
"Nah, that's not my style. C'mon, let's go to her." Mitch lifted her off his lap and they began to go towards the black-haired crying girl.

Drew grabbed his collar around his neck tight. His hands were getting a bit numb as he blew hard on them. The other men formed two lines, like a death march, on the road towards Waterbury. He wondered how his baby's eyes looked, if Jasmine was warm enough in her cramped hospital bed.
As if he read his mind, one of the men said, "Hey, your baby is going to be fine."
Drew nodded at him. The leader of the group called back, "So you're da new baby's daddy? All the nurses were talkin' about ya and da baby like you guys were saints. Ha! If they expect that little thang to save us from da water, they got another thang coming!" he chuckled.
Drew replied, "He had to be born. Jasmine couldn't make it with him inside of her."
"Is that da purty momma's name? She's a BEAU-TI-ful woman, my man, what a catch ya got there. Ya'll seem so young; are ya'll newlyweds?"
"We married last year. Are you from the south?" Drew asked.
"Ha, ha, ha, ya caught on my accent huh? It's kinda strong, I guess. I'm from Texas; I came up here to visit my niece in Beacon Falls, but my plane was put down in New Haven because of the dang water. It's crazy how thangs fall into place, ya know?" the man replied.
"My name is Drew. I'm from the East Lyme shore," Drew introduced himself.
"My name's Joe. Good thang we get to know our names before we die getting to Waterbury! Ha, ha, ha," Joe replied.
Drew fixed his collar again and gulped at that thought. 'I'm coming back to you Jasmine. I promise I won't leave you alone, ever,' Drew thought. His feet stomped through the road with the other seven men as the sun began to caress the horizon.
