Start playing red/blue/yellow version to get on a good start I guess and chat about it in the Metal and color generation games (GB/GBC) ;D

If you dig through the roms forum, there are several guides explaining the process of hacking. (If that's what you mean by "start on a game")

When I first played pokemon, Firered was my first pokemon game I played lol.
