2nd Gen Weird Color Change

Alright. So I'm assuming you know that if you have Pokémon Blue that most of the colors are basically a shade of blue. And for Red all the colors are primarily red. Well once (recently actually) I turned on my Game Boy and all the colors in Pokémon Blue were as if they were like that in Pokémon Red. I panicked, thinking this glitch had an affect, so I turned off the GameBoy and restarted it. It put the colors back to normal. But I'm mainly curios of what caused the red colors to come. Anybody know?

Pokemon Red and Blue were Gameboy games. If you played them on the Gameboy Color and GBA, then you could change the colors of the game depending on what buttons you press on the starting logo screen.
Up = Brown
Down = Pastel Mix
Left = Blue
Right = Green
Up + B = Dark Brown
Down + B = Yellow
Left + B = Grayscale
Right + B = inverted

My Red is weird like that. For no reason, every where I went was half green and half red. Green was top and red was bottom. Then it made a sort of a checker pattern.

I always wondered what that last owner did to it.
I never played with the start colors xD;
