What are base stats and why are they so important?

I've been asking this question on a few sites but no one seems to get what I'm asking.

Ok, Scyther becomes slower when it evolves into Scizor because it's base speed is lower. But if my Scyther's speed was already in the two-hundreds, why does it's base speed matter? Which one determines the speed of the Pokemon?

Base stats are the core part of the formula for Pokemon stats. They dictate what stats a Pokemon has at level 100 and do something. I dunno about the formula, but they're they biggest factor.

Stats get recalculated every level, so if you actually looked at the stats, Scyther would lose speed going into Scizor and be slower than like everything because they have higher base speeds (70 is relatively low).

You can also use Proteins/Zinc/Carbos etc. to increase a Pokemon's Base Stat.

For if you wanted to max out Scyther's Speed Stat, you could find a nature that boosts the Speed stat, add the appropriate medicine to raise its base stat, then defeat certain Pokemon to max out Speed.

Base Stats are just the Pokemon's strengths and weaknesses generalised, so it may have Base Stats of 100 Hp, 90 Attack but only 60 Defence. Therefore it'll never have truly amazing defence.

noooooo, those vitamins only add to EVs. the in-game description is wrong. EVs are a completely different ball game.

After doing some research I believe I was using the wrong site for base stat reference. I have one last question. When Scyther evolves does his speed decreases despite any EV training you gave it? What if it's on Lv 99 or 100 does it still decrease?

Scyther's speed will decreas when it evolves into Scizor. Perhaps because he turns into a Steel type Pokemon? Not sure.

So if you gave Speed EVs to Scyther, evoles into Scizor, it'll still have the best speed stats for its current form. It just won't be as fast as Scyther.

If you use Serebii it'll show you. Just scroll down to the bottom of the following links.

    Here's Scyther:

    Here's Scizor:

As you can see, Scizor only has one weakness now, compared to Scyther who has a few. Scizor isn't as fast as Scyther, but it has increased Attack and Defence, that's be the trade off.

Unless your name begins with "Ar" and ends in "ceus".

On topic, since Scizor is part steel [steel Pokemon tend to be slow] that's also the reason why it's speed is lowered.

I belive there are several stat factors ...

base stats- Biggest of them that determines what stats the pokemon are good at.

evs- 0-252 for all stats divided by 4 adding one point to that stat maxing in 64 I think

and ivs - a random number chosen from the begining from 0-31 for every stat that cant be changed. (you can tell by some of their charicteristics under summery)

and lastly natures which raise and lower growth in a certain stat 10% each, nature lists are usually pretty easy to find.
