What causes low frame rate?

Hey all, I started adding a whole host of missions to my game but now I seem to have completely destroyed the framerate somehow.

is there a way to find out exactly what is making my game so slow and correct it or do I have to go back a previous save file- potentially a month ago when I last did a system backup.

can some one please rattle off some of the primary culprits of a sudden reduction in frame rate... i think it may be related to my variables... what about long conversation branches? or do I have too many maps... or too big?

    Thank you

Big maps normally drop the frame-rate & so does grass animation for some reason... also having to many events onscreen can make it lag as well
