What is an egg group?

I know I may sound thick, but what is the meaning of an egg group? I don't know which Pokémon are in the same egg group. :paranoid:
Would anybody intelligent like to explain this to me please, at the moment I'm breeding a Machop and a Machop and then its a Pikachu and a Pikachu.
