4th Gen What is the best way to determine happiness?

I've been trying to evolve a few pokemon so I looked up how and found that a lot of them lvl up by happiness? What exactly does that mean cause i'm new to gen IV and how can I go about doing that?

There's an app for that. LOL

But yeah somewhere in sinnoh (i forget) someone gives you a poke'tch app which you can read your pokemons hapiness.

Go to that one Poketch App where all the little Pokemon sprites are moving around in a box... just hold down your stylus/finger on the desired Pokemon to determine happiness and you will see hearts.

No hearts - No love
1 heart - A little love
2 hearts - Almost there!
2 hearts that explode - Level up to evolve!
