What punishments can a Pokemon trainer receive?

Better yet, what rules are trainers bound to, and what are the consequences of breaking them. I bring this up because of this:

"Not only were they defeated and "blasted off" in the end by Misty's newly-acquired Gyarados, they received possibly the capital punishment for all Pokémon Trainers: they were banned from all official Pokémon League matches for life."

So how much freedom does a trainer have in the Pokemon world. What can a trainer do and not do, because the anime doesn't make things clear enough.

I don't think there are any set of given rules that trainers have to follow. The only thing that has ever been focused on was "Can only carry 6" for the most part, but this has only ever been enforced by trainers with Pokedexes. Those without have had more than 6.

If some trainers are abusive, they get their Pokemon taken away as a moral judgement to teach kids that animal abuse and being mean is a bad thing. I believe your example was for the three cheating kids that fought Misty in one of the specials. While they got a League wise ban, that's roughly on par with getting banned for bad behavior in any kinda business or group.

Trainers aren't any more special than any other human in their world. They don't seem to have their own set of rules to follow and are held to the same basic laws as any other person.

Has a trainer ever had their Pokemon confiscated?

Those that commited crimes have had them taken away. Like all those from Team Rocket that get caught, Jessie and James have had their Pokemon taken away a few times. Various thieves and such as well.

    1. What happends to confiscated Pokemon?
    2. How on earth did they manage to get them back? We don't exactly get to see the full extent of justice once a criminal gets arrested. No court hearing, no jail cell/prison, nothing. The minute they're hauled away by the Jenny(s), they disappear completely and are never heard from again.
    3. If law enforcement do manage to take their Pokemon away, then that makes them no better than the criminals they arrest. And that's funny, coming from a series that preaches about the unbreakable bond between humans and Pokemon.

How entertaining for children would it be if a group of Officer Jenny(s) snatched Pokemon like Chimecho or Growlie away from James. Tearkjerking.

And the same situation with a sentient and fully independent Pokemon like Meowth would just raise further questions. Confusing.

The other question is that can Pokemon be used to hurt humans legally? All those times, Ash has T-bolted Team Rocket to blast off. Surely, that can't be legal. Even a minor shock from a Pokemon that can hold 100,000 volts of electricity is surely able to kill a human, or at least severely injure them. So, what is the punishment there?
