What the heck is this?

It came up when I was shutting down the computer last night, on my desktop, and I didn't have time to look at it then. This afternoon, when I loaded it up it was still there. What is it? And is it OK to delete it off my desktop? Because I never saw it before. *points to picture*

Hmm... it doesn't look harmless... I would suggest scanning the file for any viruses (usually right-click and click Scan for Viruses, depending on your Anti-virus program).

If there are no viruses, then open the file using Notepad or a word processor. If it's just irrelevent data then it's probably safe to delete as I can't imagine a program requesting the file '~'. Probably a temporary file or something.

I use to get those a lot. Harmless.. it will just come back >< TMP File I believe.

Most files that start with ~ are temp files, I'd guess you can safely delete it but scan for viruses afterwards.
