3rd Gen What to do before restarting the game?

Sooo, I finally found a legit Pokemon Emerald! Super cheap :D

The guy who sold it to me defeated E4 and got the National Pokedex. He has Kyogre, Groudon and rayquaza. I am planning to get a Latio and Regi trio.

I will transfer everything to platinum so I need help wiztht his. What should I catch, and what items should I trade over to platinum before restarting? Battery is dead so no daily events.

Also, are there any cheats or glitches that might screw up the save file (but not the game itself!!) I could try as well before restarting the game? Any advice is appreciated :D

If you have a DS, you should probably transfer all your Pokémon over to DPPt using PalPark, and eventually to BW/BW2. =) Aside from that, I don't really think there's anything else you could do; just restart your game and enjoy.

If you have ay suggestion of what to catch feel free to share. I have Kya/Ray/Gro, both fossils, and will try to get a Lati and Regi trio :D
Oh, and Metagross as a special Pokemon, together with Swampert :D

You should definitely send Metagross and Swampert; they're extremely rare. :] If you like, you could also catch yourself a Shroomish and transfer, since it's quite a valuable Pokémon. Two other suggestions would be Bagon and Feebas; you'll definitely need them in future, I'm sure, haha.

Why Shroomish? xD

I have a Salamence so I'll just breed him. Battery is dead so I cant catch Feebas but I have a box full of them in my Sapphire so thats not a problem :D

Feebas encounters aren't related to the battery. It's the trendy saying on Dewford. Feebas will appear on 6 random times.

The things I've done when getting a pre-owned game with a "beat story" save file is:
Get all Legendaries
Gift Pokemon if they are worth it
One-time Pokemon(Togepi egg, Eevee, Beldum from Steven Stone, ect)
And things like Fossil Pokemon, and choose the other on YOUR file :)
If you already have -another- game you can also restart your new Emerald, grab a starter you don't have and restart again :) Starters are a pain in 3rd gen XD
And if you have another game too, I'd transfer some Pokemon with some helpful items like exp share :P
