What to do with my Dratini Candy?

    Hello,
I just hit level 30 the other day, and evolved my (caught) dragonair into my first dragonite. he is level 22 CP 2183, IV 15-15-12, with drag breath, and drag claw.

i also have a dratini that is level 20, CP 559, IV 15-15-14.

where do i spend my drat candies? to power up my dragonite, or save them and evolve my dratini?

i only have 5 candy right now, so it'll be awhile before i can evolve. i don't catch dratini that often.

    i do enjoy gym battling.

i'd probably only take my dragonite to level 29 (for now), because of the dust/payoff curves. that would take 49 candy and get my dragonite to CP 2878.

    what would you do?

I just recently evolved a 90%iv dratini all the way to a dragonite, it gave me a 2469CP Dragonite... but with steel wing and hyper beam...
will use it to defend gyms..
Am now saving up for another one... i want the moveset you have...

So id say keep it and power it up as you level

Keep both but save the 97.8% one until later in the game, when breeding comes in you should be able to get loads of dratini candy easily so save it for then. The high cp dragonite will be great for gyms now

Candy and Stardust are renewable resources. You will always be able to get more of them. You cannot, however, always find high IV Pokémon.

If you're prioritizing Gym battles, then feel free to boost your Dragonite to whatever standards are around you. If most players have mid-CP2000 Pokémon, then try to get your Dragonite beyond that. If most players are in the low-2000s or below, then boost yours into the mid-CP2000s.

Otherwise, save the candy for evolving future high-IV Dratini, such as the 15/15/14 one you currently have.

at this point it's more of a short term question. there is no way i'll trade these away or anything.

should i have 1 tool that is more versatile, or 2 tools that are semi useful?

in my area, gym defender's CP's vary quite a bit.

i guess i'm leaning towards sitting on the candies for now. i can always power up the dragonite literally 30 seconds before i need him to be a higher CP to take down a strong gym.

You don't really need to max out a Pokemon to take on gyms unless your local gyms are typically level 8 or higher, I stopped maxing out my Pokemon and am currently trying to get as many over 2000 CP to give me more options when taking on gyms
