It never saves anymore and sometimes it doesn't even work on my GBC. What should I do about this?

I'm kind of tired of people making threads about this internal battery thing.

Go to Wikipedia and read what they have for Pokemon Gold. Then scroll down to the bottom and it will give you a link to a store.

There you can buy P22-ND batteries, which you replace them from your cartridge.

Yeah i had that same problem as well, every time a new game, save, restart, its not there anymore.

that happened 2 me 2. idk what 2 do. im feelin the same pain u r feelin.

maybe its very old cuz you know we played gold and silver when we were so young?prob its old and doesnt work well

There is a way around that. Get yourself a Mega Memory Card for GB + GBColor. It can play on the GBA and also the GBA SP. Use it to create a back-up of your files and then Play. If your file is gone from the Cart, just use that Mega Memory Card to restore your game's save data. Best to just follow the intructions in the box.

It's true that making threads of this is pointless, but there was a few alternate ways to keep save files.

(i hope no one told you this already, but) Try cleaning it out. Pour a little bit of water in a paper cup, than a little bit of Rubbing alchohal. take a cotton swab, dip it in the mix, and squeeze it out a bit. then, rub it around the cartrige inside.

    Ohhhhhhh my.

    Do not do this.

This happened to me, and it was because the internal battery had become disconnected. This was a problem among many peoples games after about 5 or 6 years of gameplay. It can be fixed, of course, but its hardly worth the bother; it's cheaper and easier to just buy a new game.
