gen 1- best
gen 2- second favorite
gen 3- pretty cool poke designs i think...has more of the more useful poke's nowadays
gen 4- good game..but poor poke designs...creators are getin lazy on us...

after the 1st and 2nd gens the premise of the games changed...it wasnt so much about ur character going out and trying to become a pokemon master, collect 'em all...rather, the main plot was about trying to defeat an evil gang of costume wearing weirdos, and the gyms and other aspects were really just in the background...

if we will recall...

Oak- ur mom sends u there b/c oak has a task for u to complete...he wants u to go and be a poke master and beat gym's yada yada yada...
elm- same thing
birch- u kinda just run into him trying to run into the grass and he hands u one to protect yourself...and doesnt he kinda offhandidly mention battling the gyms...but not the main purpose of him giving u one...
rowan- same thing...he had no intention of u going out and beating gyms...it was just kinda a " oh hey, ur challenging gyms...good for u...keep up the good work..."

just my opinions
Vale

I don't think it went downhill. It just disappoint me in some moments. I think this is the same thing that a lot of older fans are feeling too.

I keep hear things from people about how ugly the new pokemon looks like and all this junk and I just can't keep myself from shaking my head. I can only wonder what some of these people would be saying if it was reverse. What if this last generation of pokemon had actually been release thirteen (Has it been that long since first generation?) years ago? Would people think they look awesome? Or would they hate how ugly the look like? IF you ask me I think people would have liked these pokemon thirteen years ago. Personality I think some of the old pokemon are ugly and bad designed. Jynx? Mr. Mime? COme on, don't tell me you think those two and some of the older ones looked better then some of the ones we go this past generation. Also think about it, just like fashions the pokemon designs move as time goes. Second generation was all nice and futuristic looking for the year 2000 and did a good job of that.

Then there is the whole idea that some pokemon didn't need evolutions. I going have to disagree. SOme of those pokemon did need evolutions. Electbuzz was made popular in the battle arena because it got an evolution.

To me, the franchise has disappointed me in some aspects but impress me in others. When Second Generation came out, the idea of night and day just blew my mind. I loved the fact that we got to add such something we are so familiar with and add it to Pokemon to make it more interesting. Third generation came and I was disappointed that they took the night and day feature out. I really didn't like that. It felt like we took a step backwards after such a huge leap. The thing is that Generation Three had added depth to the weather feature that was brought in Generation Two. It added more to the games. Now in Generation Four we got so much more. A new dimension and new aspects. It even brought together the weather and night and day features together. The only thing that disappointed me was the fact that the game pace was a bit off. Why have some of the new pokemon get-able after the E4. I was so eager to get a rotom but found out I could only get it after the E4. That sucked.

People thought pokemon is "gay" after the anime came out. Everyone I know actually like the games but thinks the anime is the worst thing that happened to Pokemon.

As far as playing through the game goes, yes, it has gone down hill. My first game was ruby version, and I only got blue version this year, so I can't say I'm biased by nostalga. Blue version just seemed more like an adventure. However, the newer games have better features (abilities, genders, wi-fi) and, obviously, graphics. And, lastly, my view that everyone disagrees with: I think that the pokemon are better in the newer games. Generation three has my favorite pokemon, and gen four and two come second. Kanto, on the other hand, seems to have the least creative or interesting mons.

pokemon went down hill after johto at least for me cause as a kid i was like "WHAT 150 more pokemon" it blew me away, now alot of pokemon are uncreative and rushed in design.

I think that's opinion.. because there are a lot of people who say it went downhill after the original Red/Blue/Yellow games. Then others say Johto was the drop, or Hoenn, ect..

For me it went downhill in Johto, and picked back up again with Hoenn. Since I really enjoyed the AG anime series, and the R/S/E games. D/P caused me to lose interest again, until I played Platinum. So yeah, like I said.. so many opinions from people. xD

BUT I don't think the franchise itself has gone hill.. the games still sell millions of copies world wide, and the anime still has a looot of fans. Maybe the whole world isn't 'PokemonPokemonPokemon!' all the time, but that was overkill in my opinion.

I actually think the games got a lot better in Hoenn and Sinnoh. There were more factors that make a Pokemon's stats differ, which is always interesting when battling. The graphics were improved. And even then, I compared RSE to FRLG and I was wayyy more into RSE.

What really started to go downhill in Gen III was the anime and the overall design of the Pokemon that were in the game. It just... didn't feel like the old Pokemon was at all. The anime in Generation I was awesome; it had this quaint, old town, original feeling. Same with Johto. Then came Hoenn, which introduced these really flashy more futuristic Pokemon. Now Hoenn's designs of Pokemon weren't that bad, but it just didn't feel the same. I could feel a shift in the anime. :/ May could never be a Misty replacement, imo. And, ugh Sinnoh. The anime dropped down far, AND the designs of Pokemon were ridiculous.

I totally miss Gen I and Gen II. <3

Some people really do complain like they could do better.

You try thinking up 493 original "make-believe" beings.

The games have gotten better and better, and you have to be pretty narrow minded and way to proud not too realise that.

Now the anime, IMO, was never any good.

I don't think the games have necessarily gone "downhill", but I do think with each passing generation they add so much that kind of takes away from our original Pokemon experiences. Like Charmageddon said, they've added a lot of features since the first gen and that may be good for some, but it really isn't the same for us retro gamers. It's arguable that it was better when is was simpler without breeding and EVs and what not because some people really just preferred the basics. I personally think its funny the games seem to get more child oriented as it goes along, yet they add all these complicated features that the average 7 year old will not understand.

There have always been EVs, and breeding is entirely optional (even for completing the dex, as DPPt made many baby pokemon available in the wild.

finally, someone says what i've been thinking! ._.

but i don't agree with the anime thing - although it's getting a more boring now. :\

Beyond Gerneration I, I never seriously watched the Anime, but for me, after G/S/C, there was a major lapse in game experience. G/S/C was (for me) my favorite generation, had great new upgrades to some Generation I Pokemon (Steelix, Scizor) that made sense. Generation III brought in so many weird pokemon (i.e. Shiftry, Ludicolo, Banette), and the music in the games was nothing compare to G/S/C. Generation IV was similar to Generation II, in that they evolved a whole bunch of existing pokemon, however, the evolutions made very little sense. Piloswine got major STAT improvements, but went from looking cool to looking like a character on Sesame Street, and this happened to SO many others (Nosepass among otheres.).

This is just in-game play wise and evolution wise that I think it has gone down. That being said, the competetive play has been VASTLY improved in the past two generations with the addition of EVs, Choice Items, More Hazards, and so much else. This balances out the negatives for me.

Some people would probably say after Kanto or Johto but I still enjoy watching Pokemon and I think it's as good as ever.
