Hey, maybe I'm just crazy--no, I'm sure this is an illogical thought, but you know the episode where Ash's Charizard faces off against a man's Poliwrath? (The Poliwrath has a championship belt.) Twice in that episode I thought Ash referred to the man as "Dad", which confused me until I realized I'd misheard upon viewing a repeat. But, it still sticks--that kind of guy is who I imagine Ash's dad is.
For Ash's dad being Giovanni or just some guy--well, maybe it's wrong to do this, but plot twists that have any serious subject matter (I don't mean "lose the tournament" serious, or "we have to rescue X", which happens quite often) just aren't something I'm seeing with Pokemon. If Ash's father is dead, they'd probably have to really euphemize it. I think it's more likely that Ash's father is some trainer.... and, since Pokemon doesn't seem to have much in the way of those kinds of revelations (except maybe if it's revealed in a movie), I suspect it isn't someone he's met before like Lance
Giovanni seems unlikely because you think that if they knew that, the writers would want to try to develop the Boss's character, make him less strict and cunning at times, instead of the 1D that I've seen him as. (But maybe I'm misjudging that?) Most likely of course is that they'll never bring him up. It's not like they'll ever have to 'play that card'; they're doing fine with new people and new Pokemon and new mini-plots every week. (They could keep going forever with that if they wanted to I suspect, especially with those new DS games coming up.)
