just curious here. out of the 3 board (phpbb, vb, and ipb) which is easier on resources for the server? PokeRadio has been busy getting the site remade to get off of the messy phpnuke install currently being used (which is a major resource hog right now) and i need to switch the boards around. i could stay with phpbb (although i would have to reinstall. plus add the fact that the current version on the site is about 6 revisions behind), but id prefer to go with vb or ipb if at all possible.

    thx :)

    I personally like vB better.

i like vb as well, but im mainly worried about what is less resource intensive. dont want real crap loading times do we? ;)

Hmm don't go with IPB, a lot of resources for it are paid.

? i know ipb is payware. so is vb, that doesnt bother me. i can afford both. just wanna know which is less resource intensive before i make a purchase.

No, I meant things like decent skins, ect. are hard to find unless you pay.

With vB and IPB, you're paying too much for something that should be free. I recommend phpBB because it allows you to have the features you want and not what others want.

phpBB puts the least amount of stress on the server. IPB and VB will put a LOT of stress on the server. Actually, I would recommend myBB over all three. It's virtually the same as a vBulletin but free and a lot easier on the server.

*Agrees with Robo* Actually PHPBB's script is much simpler and it takes very less resources when compared to VB. IPB is somewhere in between. If you use PHPBB, I will guarentee that your server will not crash that much in terms of the strain from you and there will be lesser load. VB takes a lot of resources and i don't recommend it unless you have a top 95% stable server.

yeah. i decided to use phpbb after all. couiple reasons other than what you guys influenced this: 1) lack of any "working" or "available" site integration tools for vbulletin (which was my first choice. and i didnt feel like coding my own integration tools from scratch) and 2) back during my first attempt to create a custom clean-cut site, i was able to easily integrate phpbb into the site through the use of phpbb_fetch_all which is by far the best imho.

I do not reccomend phpBB at all, especially with all the security holes that always seem to appear before a patch can be created.

vBulliten is the easiest forum software I have ever used (And I literally mean that) the AdminCP is easy to use and skins are easy to edit.

I just don't reccomend a vB if you have small sites because then that is just a waste of money.

phpBB is not less sercure, they just care more about releasing patches to make it more sercure unlike vB.

PhpBB = The second lightest on the server, lack of features and it has quite a few bugholes.
Invision = Not free anymore, third litest on the server, easy to use. Most Secure.
wBB = The lightest on the server, one of the most secure FREE bbs systems you will find. https://www.woltlab.de/products/burning_board_lite/index_en.php
vBulletin = the best, most expensive, Most secure, very server intensive, and very powerfull.

PHPBB has a lot of features and you don't need to code any extra features as most of them have already been released as patches. You can also get some excellent PHPBB layouts in the official site along with some patches too. I appreciate your decision Vchat and make sure you change the skin for your forum as the official layout sucks.

I think SMF is best, it hasn't put too much strain on server in my experience... very streamlined and clean. :)

well, the server its on is slow anyhow (old IBM machine. 700MHZ P3, 512MB SDram, windows xp pro. and to add insult to injury, its also used as a workstation machine albeit mainly just for web and email). hopefully within a month or so i can buy me a new one which will strictly be used for the website and nothing more.

In that case, you'll be able to use any of them... but it will be slow due to your home connection anyway won't it? I still think SMF pwnz~
