    Alakazam + Espeon in party

    or

    Alakazam + Umbreon

I realize that the first option would mean I would have two of the same element but both of them are powerhouses so I'd be fine with that, not to mention that I would balance it out with the rest of my party.

The second option would mean more of a variety of elements, including the missing dark element in my deck, but at the same time generation 2 dark moves are pretty weak. Umbreon would be relatively useless unless I were up against a ghost or psychic type.

Decide for me, and provide intelligent reasons why.

Well, if this is in-game, it wouldn't matter all that much. As long as you level up enough you can beat the game with anything. If this is for battling against other people, it would be best to go for the Alakazam+Umbreon route. Umbreon isn't supposed to be powerful, it's supposed to be a wall. So umbreon doesn't need too many strong moves, just helpful moves like toxic and wish. I would go for Alakazm+Umbreon either way, because you can send it out to absorb hits in-game while you heal up with potions/revives.

    yeah Mr.Person is right

in-game you can have what ever team you want, with basically any moveset, as long as their levels are higher than the trainers game

    But more on topic...

    Umbreon:

    Toxic
    Wish
    Mean Look
    Baton Pass

That ,for some reason, is one of my favourite 2 gen movesets

Go for Umbreon and Alakazam matey

So Umbreon has high defense or hp? Explain how she is a buffer.

Also, some moves like wish it can't learn. And in Gold umbreon can't naturally learn baton pass and there is no TM for it.

What is a good strategy for using Umbreon?

Umbreon has high defense and special defense. It's hit points are also okay, so it can survive many hits before fainting. Plus, with moonlight, it can last even longer. You are right that it can't learn wish, but eevee learns baton pass at level 36. The main strategy for umbreon is to stall with toxic, but I'm guessing this is in-game. In that case, you should teach it at least one attacking move such as faint attack. Baton passing double teams can wreak havoc on most in game trainers, and is quite helpful. I don't remember if double team is a TM or not in G/S/C, but if it is it can be very helpful.

Well, I'd use umbreon, simply because you have alakazam on your team. As the other two have said Umbre is a staller, however, it's a fighting magnet, and aganist cross chop that is not good... This may sound crazy, but place psychic, because w/o it, Umbreon is a sitting duck waiting to die by a fighting type.
