When I first played Pokemon Gold as kid I picked Cyndaquil as my starter. He did well, but nowadays I think I have been converted to Totadile. He's cute, seems the most enthusiastic about being your pokemon and the best competitively since the happy blue gator gets Dragon Dance and Sheer Force.

I like all three but Id go with Totodile for its fearsome strength with Sheer Force and Dragon Dance

I like Totodile also.
Rage helps you in the earlier gyms/battles and evolving to Feraligatr at Lv30 is pretty sweet.
