i need another pokemon to back up my charmander just incase it looses to brock. I'm going to evolve it into a Charmeleon first and then challenge him since I did it before and won. I'm going to need another pokemon for Misty anyways so should I catch a bug type?

Butterfree is usually a recommended partner for Charmander/Charmeleon when fighting Brock. Because Rock types have low Special Defence and no resistance to Psychic moves, get a Butterfree to learn Confusion, and they can make short work of Brock and his fellow trainers.

Butterfree is a good pokemon. I think, you should have one in your Team.
For Misty good is grass or electric type. I think, Pikachu will be ok. You can catch him in Viridian Forest.

Yepp, I agree, pikachu is da best against misty.

Regarding butterfree against brock i do not agree so much.....
Butterfree is bug/flying, so just one rock throw by onix and he is dead x_x
correct me if I am wrong, but thats how i think of it.... unless brock's pokemon are at a very low level and did not learn rock throw yet o.O

Even if a Butterfree just evolved, it's gonna be faster than both of Brock's Pokemon. And even if they do have a Rock move (Rock Tomb most likely, since that's the TM Brock gives you). you'll be acting first. If one gets you, then at least you'll be leaving with some heavy damage.

Yea i cought a caperpie and evolved it into butterfree and I got through brock on my first try..and im still using my butterfree and he is helping me out alot

Isnt Mankey a Good Choice? o.o
In my ol' an' good Yellow Version, I used it to beat Brock XD

Against Misty... Humm... I will probably go with my Bulbasaur :P
But since ya started with Charmander, I will recomend Bellsprout (If LeafGreen) or Pikachu... Dunno really o.o

Charmander/Charmeleon can just level up and get Metal Claw to crush the rock types. Mankey works better than Butterfree in terms of type advantage, as it doesn't require as much training along with Rock Tomb resistance.

As for Cerulean City, your version exclusive grass type of Bellsprout and Weepinbel/Oddish and Gloom should do the job rather easily. If you bought Magikarp and got Gyarados, it'll be a gurantee win with it.

Of course, high level pwns all. It's not that hard to train in FRLG at all, even at the early stages without the VS Seeker.

Let's put it like this... Brock hasnt got only one pokemon and even if you act first, you will not destroy em in one shot. If they attack back with Rock tomb and you get out with some heavy damage once, what about then with the next pokemon? x_x Also If im not mistaken Rock Tomb lowers speed, so even if u receive it once you may get to b slower than your next opponent o_O
