Who do you think the protagonists are?

I'm assuming that aside from Red and maybe Gold, who the protagonists canonically were will probably never get answered. So who do you think they were?

Usually I see fans picking either all male or all female, but this is how I picture it:

Red, Gold/Ethan, May, Dawn, Hilbert, Nate, Serena.

And for ORAS, I'm thinking it's a female player character again (if it's not May like before).

Red Ethan Lyra Leaf Brendan May Dawn Lucas Hilda Hilbert Nate Rosa.
I only think that out of them, only Leaf isn't canon? Correct me if I'm wrong.
The others have either had names released, or are default names given. I'm sure we get the original protagonists from R/S in ORAS, considering remakes.
