Why is it okay to like Disney and not Pokemon?

Unfortunately, Pokemon is looked upon as a fad that people got over, so people think that you are behind the times when you say you like it. (Which is too bad, since it's a good franchise overall.)

Disney is looked upon as a classic because of it's history. So people don't mind if you like it because it's a "classic".

To be honest, I'd ridicule people for liking Disney stuff just as much as I would if they liked pokemon.

In fact, I do.

I don't really get any of it.

You're all acting as though Disney movies aren't better than Pokemon movies in every concievable way. However, they are.

I didn't even grow up watching Disney movies. The first one I saw was Pocahontas about two years ago. But even from that one movie, you can tell why Disney is popular with both kids and adults.

Pocahontas has a nice story which would appeal to both adults and kids - it appeals to kids because it's exciting and there are some deep themes which would make them think, but it also has romance and whimsy enough to appeal to adults who are looking for escapism. Pokemon movies have stories that will make sense only to fans of the franchise.

The animation in Pocahontas is fantastic, with fluid character movements and some breathtaking imagery. Pokemon movies haven't even come close to achieving anything so artistic. The characters in Pokemon barely move, and the most of the imagery is uninspired.

Pocahontas has some fantastically artistic action sequences. In Pokemon, the action sequences consist mainly of kids screaming, and Pokemon shooting CG lazer beams at one another.

Disney makes movies which appeal to everyone, from little kids to tired old critics. As kids grow up and mature, they will probably come to appreciate Disney movies on different levels, whereas they will probably look back at Pokemon and wonder why they ever liked it - because it no longer holds any appeal for them.

Of course, here, we all still like Pokemon. But it's not hard to work out why others don't.

I cried at the end of the 1st movie, too D: That was probably the first movie I really cried at. And if you research it online, the movie has a lot deeper meaning than lots of people probably even realize.

You know, I was wondering this, too. Last semester in English class our teacher had us write a little thing on a Disney movie we liked and it shocked me that no one complained about it.

And I have to agree that I guess it's because Disney movies are classics. The true joy of Pokemon is in the games, but look at the Pokemon TV show, it's something that anybody can watch on TV and it doesn't require them buying a game console, but the opinion that many people get from the anime is that it's something extremely childish and for kids. So they don't even bother to get the game [rather they own the console or not].

Then there is the Disney movies, available to pretty much everyone if you own a TV and the real joy of the movies is there for you. The MOVIES and shows are the joy.
Unlike Pokemon where the GAMES are the real joy. Yet many are turned off instantly by the childish TV show, which is so openly available. If you were older and saw the Pokemon series for the first time on TV, I don't think it would have the same appeal.
I mean even some Pokemon game fans don't like the anime.

Not to mention that there is a wider audience for movies than there is for Pokemon. Almost everyone watches movies, but not everyone plays video games.

At least, that's my thought on the subject.

I can agree with most of what you said, but it's not true in all cases. I enjoyed the first Pokemon movie because I liked the show and the games, but my Dad has said that he honestly enjoyed watching that movie, and I'm pretty sure he had no idea what a Mewtwo was prior to seeing that movie.

Disney is classic, that's why. We grew up on Disney, our parents grew up on Disney, and probably their parents grew up on it too if said grandparents are young enough (ex: my grandfather was born sometime in the 1940s, I believe, and Snow White came out in that same decade). It's something you hear that everyone, and I mean everyone, can relate to easily and go "Oh yeah I remember watcing <such and such Disney movie> when I was a kid!" It's endearing, ontop of all of that.

Pokemon, on the other hand, doesn't have the same classic feel or "tag" to it as Disney does. Not everyone can relate to Pokemon like they can to Disney. It came out during my generation and hasn't been around as long as good o' Mickey Mouse has and thus hasn't had any chances to really bridge any kind of generation gap/stigma. Just the other day, my mom picked up my Mismagius plushie and remarked, "Where is your brain...?" If this were a Disney character instead, however, she'd understand better since she grew up on Disney like I did (and she worked at Disneyland as a teen, ontop of it all).

... Okay, so I'm shooting in the dark here with this, but that answer made the most sense to me. >:

Disney movies are made with families in mind. People of all ages can enjoy them.

Pokemon movies are made with children in mind. Generally, you'd need to either be a child or a fan of the series to enjoy them.

Plus, Disney movies are generally quite good. They feature high quality animation, voice talent, music, scripts (although sometimes they fall a bit short in this department). Pokemon movies aren't. I enjoy them, but I wouldn't call them good movies.
I cannot put it any better than these two posts already did.

Guys, for the most part, Pokemon was a fad [in North America]. It's still alive and doing well (as far as the games go, anyway) but really? It's not timeless. It's only ~15 years old which, honestly? Isn't that old. Disney has been around for generations and everyone knows this. To be blunt, it's "okay" to like Disney when you're old because everyone liked it when they were little and it's something everyone can relate to. (But I disagree with this--my generation finds Pokemon pretty nostalgic and while it's a different kind of nostalgia, I don't think it should be okay to like one childish thing and not another--anything should be fair game, imo. D:)

However! The Pokemon movies are quite literally a way to make more money for the franchise. Yeah, we like them because it lets us see our favourite characters and monsters on the big screen (not that they get theatrical releases anymore) but they are a way to cash in on the franchise and make more money. There is no arguing this. They are higher quality than the anime series but they're still pretty crappy compared to most other animated films. But Disney movies on the other hand are original films with no previous basis (besides the fairy tales they tend to be based on). The original movies are always top-knotch and something that appeals to everyone. If you want to make a real comparison between Pokemon and Disney, it's better to use the straight-to-video movies that Disney makes a quick buck on. So all those crappy sequels that no one but parents buy and you get ridiculed for watching. (Cinderella III, anyone??)

No offence but your friends a douche. It's you opinion whether you like something or not. No-body can change that.

Disney is ofcourse, classic. And is still very popular. Pokemon has somehow... died out?

Like everyone else said: Disney is made with families in mind, and to reach into the hearts of adults and make them feel like a kid again. Pokemon just isn't.

On the ooooooooooooooother hand, if we are still fans when we start to have families, I'd be willing to bet that those kids would find pokemon amazing, too. Which would then make their kids find it amazing, should they be fans that long. It's all about starting a new family tradition, which pokemon hasn't been around long enough to do.

If it makes you feel any better, I cried at the end of nearly every pokemon movie. Even the new ones.

Ill tell you whay its okay because after johto POKEMON SUCKED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Disney has all their...

1) movies
2) singers
3) actors
4) TV shows
5) games

...and it's just a much bigger industry designed for people of all ages. People just dislike Pokemon and think it's stupid for someone to "play" with fake monsters.

Also, people might have played Pokemon or watched the shows when they were young, and decided abandoning it was mature and made them older and "grown-up."
