Why two Pokémon of the opposite gender belonging in the same one or two egg groups sometimes cannot mate with each other?

    Why do you think that two Pokémon of the opposite gender belonging in the same one or two egg groups sometimes cannot mate with each other?
     
    I think the only instance of this happening is in Gen. II, where two Pokémon whose IVs are too similar can't breed (this is because the game flags them as relatives, even if they aren't).
     
    i mean. it sucks ig but i don't think about it too much bc the circumstance it happens is very isolated.
