Figured this is best put in mapping, but really, I'm not sure if it even belongs in this topic. But anyways, how do y'all decide on which wild pokemon to put for encounters? I'm getting my mapping out of the way before I make a serious effort to fix my scripting problems, and I'm fairly stumped with deciding on what pokemon I want in the routes and such.

I don't know how to fix that scripting issue unfortunately, but I'm sure I know the solution to this. :D What I usually do is think on what Pokemon would make sense in your region, or area. I think of it like putting animals into the real world where they should live. For example, let's say my region is one that is close to the ocean, I would have Pokemon like Lotad, as an example, as they could live as lily pads would in a river.

Another example could be, your area is mountainous, you could put Pokemon you think can withstand cold climates, rocky terrain, and can resist air pressure, so Pokemon like, Geodude, or Castform would make sense.

Alternatively, you can also check how they're classified in the Fire Red/Leaf Green Pokedex, since that Pokedex displays where Pokemon would usually live. e.g. It says that Bulbasaurs live in Forests, and Charmanders in Mountains.

    Hope this is helpful. :)

Thanks! I was thinking of checking the fr/lg dex for the areas, but really, my reason for asking was I'm sitting here, and I can't think of a reason to change what the game already had, other than that I want to put my own pokemon there:laugh-squinted:

You can change the encounters if you wish to be a bit more interesting, if you'd like, put the Pokemon that you wanted in bland areas of the game, such as Route 1. I know in my hack, I made Hoothoot a 5% chance, and added Zigzagoon just to make it a little more interesting. :)

It's also important to consider the base stats of certain Pokémon. Just placing a Pokémon somewhere because you think it naturally belongs there isn't really a smart thing to do.

For example, if you make the first route of your game a forest, putting something like a level 3 Scyther would be pretty dumb. Scyther's base attack of 110 VS Weedle's base attack of 35 would make your game very unbalanced from the get-go.

I am certainly not interested in going and editing every Pokémon's base stats to balance my game, so this is something I consider when planning.
