Chapter 1
Spoiler:
"Yo, Mason! Hurry up! We only have an hour of daylight left!"
"Wait a second! I need to get ready real quick." I said. It was a bit of a lie. I was just busy discussing strategy with Gyro. He's my partner, a Pokemon. He's a Machop that my older brother gave me as a gift before going away for his job. But, that's not really important.
I was whispering to Gyro what our plan was. Sam's Pokemon was a Starly. This meant that Gyro was weak against it and that we were at a disadvantage. This wasn't news to us. We had this battle every week. As a result, we lost this battle every week.
"Make sure to use your foresight so you can see what move it will use next. If it's about to use wing attack, use that strategy we talked about! Got it?" Machop nodded it's head.
I couldn't understand Pokemon. Nobody could. It wasn't uncommon though for trainers and Pokemon with strong bonds to interpret each other's thoughts. Gyro and I weren't exactly at that point yet.
"Let's go Mason!" Sam yelled through my window. Gyro and I were finally ready. This week, we would come out victorious.
"Alright, hope you're ready to finally lose this week!" I replied with a bit of cockiness in my voice. I had a way of having sarcastic confidence in everything.
"Well, I'm 22-0 against you, with 7 matches ending in under a minute. I like my odds," Sam said trying to brag. It was true, I did struggle for the last five months. It'll be different this time. I thought.
We were getting ready to start.X Most people would have given up by now. But you haven't. You can do this!V I had to repeat this to myself over and over again. It was how I kept going. It gave me strength.
"Let's start now!" I yelled across the field. "Let's go!" Without hesitation, we both sent out our respective Pokemon.
"Let's go Rex!" Sam yelled out.
Rex is Starly's nickname. Why? I still don't know. Sam said that he looked like a Rex. I'm not so sure Sam's head was screwed on straight at the time.
I decided to be generous today. "You can go first. You'll need it!" Smack talk was something that we did jokingly. Neither of us meant what we said but, it was just what we did.
"Alright you asked for it!" Now I wasn't sure that I was so ready. "Rex! Go in with a quick attack!" The Starly came in with startling speed.
"Gyro! Hurry up and slow it down with a leer!" Rex kept coming but cringed. It slowed down considerably. Leaving Gyro with enough time to get out of the way. "Now go in with a Karate Chop!" Starly was still cringing from the leer.
"Don't just sit there Rex! Fly up and dodge the attack!" Starly started to go up but Gyro was too fast. It wasn't a direct attack, but it hit Starly's better wing. This made it hard for Starly to fly.
"Now Rex! Recover and go in with a wing attack!" This was do or die right here.
"Gyro! Use your foresight and figure out the path it'll take! Then use bullet punch!" Machop started to use foresight but froze. Starly's wing attack hit him directly.
"Yeah Rex! Now, finish them off with a tackle attack!" It was over. Machop was hardly standing and couldn't take a straight on tackle attack.
After Rex took out Gyro, I walked over to Sam.
"Good battle man," I stuck out my hand for a handshake. "I thought I had you there. Gyro just sorta freaked out a little bit." Gyro cowered a little bit at my side.
"It's alright. You did really well this time. Usually it takes half of that time." While Sam was speaking, Rex was up on his shoulder, just chirping away.
"I don't know what to do anymore," I complained. "I can't beat you and I have no way to train with other Pokemon." I didn't identify this as a significant problem until now.
Sam replied, "That's actually what I wanted to talk about," This engaged me a little bit more. "I spoke to my mom about leaving town. She said that as long as I have someone to start their journey with me, I could." It was now that I realized his plans. "You were the only person that came to mind… N-n-now of course, there's a man in the next town over, who's known for helping trainers start their journeys and-"
"Of course!" I said. Stuttering much less than he did. "I just have to talk to my parents, and if they say yes, we're all set!"
"R-really? You think it'll be that easy?" Sam sounded skeptical.
"Not quite that easy but, not too much harder. As long as the next town over isn't too far, we should meet that guy you were talking about and we should be a-okay!" I was excited to the point that I was shouting in Sam's face.
"Well, then you better hurry up and ask your mom. I was hoping to leave by the end of the week," Sam said energetically.
"That won't be a problem. I'll be three days ahead! But, I've gotta go now! See ya!" I said walking away.
"See ya Mason!"
I was taking my first step to having a journey.

Chapter 2
Spoiler:
As I entered my house, I could smell something in the oven. Chicken. No. Steak. My favorite food ever. It was strange. My mom almost never made steak. Not unless it was my birthday or there was a special sale at the store. Usually when that happened, she'd tell me as soon as she got home.
I started talking before walking into the kitchen. "What's the--" I stopped before I had a chance to finish. Sam's mom was sitting there with a big smile on her face. Her blonde hair falling over her eye.
"Well hey Mason!" She said cheerfully. Everything was so weird.
Without thinking I replied, "What's going on? Why are you here? Sam just took off for your house and he'll probably be confused when nobody is there."
"Oh, he'll be okay," Sam's mother said without any worry. "I left him a note on the door. He'll be here in the next 15 minutes." Yet, I was still confused about the other things. "As for why I'm here, I took it upon myself to talk to your mother about what I'm sure Sam told you."
Ah, now I understand. Thanks for taking the blow for me! I was a little scared my mom would say no if I asked about going on a journey. Since Sam's mom asked, it made it a lot easier on my end.
"So… is it okay?" I directed this at my mother. "C-can I go?" I stuttered quickly.
My mom breathed heavily, "If you think that you can do it and be safe, it will be okay with me. But-" Here comes the big but. Haha, big but. "You have to promise to keep in contact with me daily." Okay, that wasn't too bad. "And-" The and. The second most dreaded word for children. "You have to keep your Pokemon with you."
Alright, these standards weren't too hard to meet. "Okay, so this is a yes?" I asked stuttering every word.
"Yes, it is. I think it will be a good experience plus, you're growing up so I think that you're ready." Sam then walked in the door.
"Can he go? Is he allowed to? Please tell me yes." I don't even think he breathed between sentences. Sam really wanted to do this.
"Yes, sweetie. He c-"
"Yeah!" Sam cheered without letting his mom finish. "When can we go?"
"Mason's mom and I agreed that between getting you proper supplies, throwing a party, and preparing you guys, it'll be about three days." I thought that Sam's mom would get on him for interrupting her but she didn't.
"Only three days? That's really fast." I replied quizzically. Most people would probably spend weeks or months getting ready.
My mom spoke this time. "We know that you guys have been with your Pokemon for a while now and we think that you're ready. You guys already have a head start, you just don't know it!" I never had thought of it like that.
It was back to Sam's mom. I had the thought that this could make some really bad dialogue in a story.
"You boys should be getting to bed. You need a lot of sleep for the days that you two have coming!"
"Okay," Sam and I replied simultaneously. We didn't care what we had to do at this point. We were ready to leave.
"Good night Mason. Good night Mrs.Ere." Sam said excited. He even said my last name correctly. It's spelled Ere but many people pronounce it Ear or Eerie. Said the correct way, it sounded like Air.
"Yes, good night Mason and Sherry." This came from Sam's mother.
"Good night Sam. Good night Mrs.Blair," my mother and I said together. Sam's last name was much simpler with just being pronounced like the word Blare. As in, blare the speakers.
With that, Sam and Mrs.Blair left our house, waving on the way out.
"Mason. I think you should be heading to bed now." This was long before my usual bedtime. I didn't argue with it though.
"Okay mom. Good night."
"Good night Mason."
With that, I went upstairs to my bedroom. I had a long few days ahead of me.
2 and a half days later…
Sam and I were sitting on his living room couch. It was the party our moms were throwing for us before we left tomorrow. Nothing big. It really couldn't be. Our town wasn't even a town. It literally didn't have a name.
The area where we lived belonged to nobody and nothing. It had a population of about 20. Half of which were over the age 50. The rest were parents who had babies and toddlers. That was aside from Sam and I.
What really excited about this though, was that my dad was supposed to show up. I rarely was able to see him. His work kept him away often. It was really important though and he wasn't allowed to tell me what exactly he did.
He does have a really cool Pokemon that he calls Read. It's a really smart Pokemon. A Togekiss. I've never seen it battle, but I can tell that it's strong.
I was just sitting on the couch waiting for my father with Sam. That's another thing. His dad used to work with my dad but nobody's heard from him in about 2 years. We don't mention him anymore.
Still, I sat on the couch. Waiting. The last time I checked, people were standing around talking, waiting for the time when we talk about Sam and I leaving.
Still, I kept waiting. Just sitting there. I wasn't going to do anything until my father arrived. Still, I sat there. Seconds. Minutes. An hour. The I finally realized…
He wasn't coming.

Chapter 3
Spoiler:
It's at the top of Haste Mountain. The base of the Pokemon World Battling Association (PWBA). They are currently holding one of the most important meetings of the year.
"Mr.Ere, you cannot leave this meeting! You are a vital member of it and I cannot allow you to leave. If you do, we will have to release you. Not just from this job. For good."
"Sir, my son is leaving home! I'm not going to sit at a boring meeting where we talk about stuff that I already know about! I told my wife I'd be there and I will be!"
"We already lost Chandler! We will not lose you too! You leave this room and it will be the last thing you do!"
"Chandler's son is leaving home too. I'll make sure to send him your condolences about his father."
With that, Mr.Ere sent out a Togekiss, used mist, and fled the building. He was going to see his son before he left home. Nothing would stop him. He would have to do everything quietly, and secretly. He now had a warrant for his death. No matter where he went now, he wouldn't be safe.

Despite my father not showing up, the party still happened to be fun. After everybody ate and we were all done talking, we had a little ceremony. I sent out Gyro while Sam sent out Rex. We gave our speeches. Nothing special. We just talked about being happy and sad at the same time and how we were going to go out and make a name for the town. It was pretty much all of that cliche movie stuff.
Now, before we had the party, the two days previous had been spent preparing. Sam's mom and mine both got us bookbags, pokeballs, journals, cell phones, extra clothes, and a lot of cash. Not just a little bundle, but like their whole entire life savings. It seemed like that much money.
After everyone had said their goodbyes and left, Sam and I went straight to bed. We wanted to have as much energy as possible tomorrow. It was going to be a very big day.
Sam and I woke up the next morning and everybody met up at the edge of the town. It was pretty awesome. It was only about 20 people but it felt like a lot more. I just wish I could have taken my mind off of my father. It was the one thing that continued to bother me. No matter how much I tried, I kept wishing that he were there.
I talked to my mom while Sam talked to his. I assumed that they were telling us they same things.
"I just wanted to let you know that it will take you about two days to reach the town you two are trying to reach. You'll have to go through a small forest but it shouldn't be too hard. Your father and I managed to do it."
"You were a trainer? With dad? I didn't know that." This was a big surprise to me. I just couldn't see my mom as a Pokemon trainer.
"Yes, your father and I both started here like you and Sam. We actually set off with Sam's dad too. They were both just like you and Sam. Full of energy, ready to take on the world! I miss those days. I spent most of them keeping the two boys out of trouble and trying to catch up to them. They were both gifted. Much more than I was. You, your brother, and Sam are all the same." She was being reduced to tears. I didn't know how much my mom loved my father. It must be hard on her to never see him around.
"Mom, I promise to call everyday and to do my laundry an-and I won't let you down!" I said this feeling as if I were in a movie again. Despite that, I still meant every single word I said. It took all my power not to cry.
"Honey, don't cry. If you cry then I'm not letting you go. You have to be stronger than that. Now, hurry up and go or it'll take you three days and you might not have enough food and water. Just remember that I love you. And I promise that you will see your father. He won't let you down." She stopped crying to say this. It was one of the most emotional moments of my life.
"How did you know that I was upset about dad?" That was the only thing I could come up with.
"It's my mom-senses. Just remember them when you think about doing something bad and I'm not around," she said this with a perfectly straight face which made me believe her.
"I love you Mason," She was finally done.
"I love you too mom." I meant it. This wasn't like when I asked her to buy me candy and she made me say it. I really meant it this time. I didn't know what loving your mom meant until now.
I started walking away, Sam close behind. "Remember to brush your teeth! And don't do anything that will get you guys!" I wasn't able to identify who was yelling. I think it was mix of our moms yelling together. We didn't turn around to respond. We kept walking without a word. Down the road until there was no sign of anybody near the horizon.
It felt like we had walked miles. Which, we probably had. I was starting to get really tired. I was about to say something when Sam beat me to it.
"Phew, we've finally started and I'm exhausted. I thought the town was closer than this."
"Me too. By the way, what's the town called? I don't think you ever told me"
"Umm… let me get out my map," Sam said while reaching into his bag. "Hey! There's two in here. My mom must've accidentally gave me one extra. Why don't you take it?" I felt like this situation was strangely familiar.
"Sure! Thanks! Now I don't have to buy my own," I exclaimed pretending like I was actually going to waste my money on a stupid map. Sam then went on to hand me the map.
"It looks like it's called Zora Town. It's pretty small. Population of about 500. We're about a fourth of the way the-"
"Only a fourth?" If I had something in my mouth I would have spit it out. "We've been walking forever!"
"Dude, it's only been about three hours. We have about three more today and then all of tomorrow. It's not like we won't make it." He said it so calmly. I was impressed with his coolness during the situation.
"I know we can make it, I just don't want to walk anymore." I whined a little as I spoke.
"It's going to be part of being a trainer. We'll have to deal with it," Sam spoke in a condescending tone.
"I guess you're right… I just got an idea!" I felt stupid for not thinking of this. "I'll just send out Gyro to have him carry me! I won't have to walk and it'll be good training!" I felt like a genius after saying it.
"Go Gyro!" I shouted as I enlarged the pokeball and threw it into the air. "Hey bud! I need you to carry me to Zora Town!"
Gyro turned around, ready for me to hop on his shoulders.
"Do you think that Rex can carry you?" I asked Sam. His Starly wasn't very big and I didn't know how much physical strength it had.
"I'm not sure. I guess we'll have to see and find out. Go Rex!" The red light flashed with Rex's shadow in the middle.
"You wanna have a race?" I asked in the mood for competition.
"Sure, why not? You guys don't stand a chance against me and Rex!" Challenge accepted.
"It's Rex and I doofus!" In case I lost, I needed something to hold against him.
We both agreed to eating lunch first and then we got ready. We were standing at the starting line. I was up on Gyro's shoulders and Rex was dangling Sam a few feet off the ground.
"Ready… Set…" Rex took off before go. I didn't mind though. They were going to need the head start.
"Go!" Gyro took off. For the first five seconds, we had the pleasure of watching Rex struggle to carry Sam. Then we passed the two of them, taking off was down the road. We did stop early though. Sam caught up after about half and hour.
"That wasn't fair! Your Machop has an advantage over Rex! He's naturally strong and he doesn't have the extra distance of air travel!" Sam said in a sarcastic rant.
"Your Starly is the one who took a head start!" I felt like that was a solid comeback.
After we argued for five minutes, we took a break. Our Pokemon were tired so we returned them to their pokeballs.
Suddenly, I started to notice Sam dozing off. I started to feel the same way. My eyes were getting heavy and it was a struggle to keep them open. I sent out Gyro.
"Gyro, use wake up slap on Sam and I!" Gyro tried but fell asleep himself before getting to take action. I joined the club soon after. Something was making us sleep. But what for?
"Mr.Ere, you cannot leave this meeting! You are a vital member of it and I cannot allow you to leave. If you do, we will have to release you. Not just from this job. For good."
"Sir, my son is leaving home! I'm not going to sit at a boring meeting where we talk about stuff that I already know about! I told my wife I'd be there and I will be!"

I am doing this to work on my writing skills. But, where's the fun in just writing for yourself? Plus, it's easier to improve with other people criticizing your work. So that's the point of this. Do not expect it to be a masterpiece or use crazy vocabulary.
