You don't look like you're from around here - a traveller, are you? Welcome to the Great Library of Arvania - amidst our dusty tomes and old parchments, I'm sure you will find everything there is to know about these biodiverse lands and the people who inhabit them.

Me? It's kind of you to ask, but I'm afraid there's not much to tell, child - I'm just an old bookkeeper who has been working at this library for years beyond count. But there's value in my age, I suppose; I'm practically walking history! I was born and raised here my whole life, and many years of that life have been spent studying the history I haven't already lived through, so I can tell you a lot about this place.

Note: the narrative style is only going to be present in the introduction - topics to follow will generally be written as "books" and will be more factual/ clinical.

Vocab is bolded in case things get a little hard to follow; there is a glossary at the end of every section!

I. INTRODUCTION

I was a young boy when all of Arvania's inhabitants still lived peacefully under the rule of both Kingdoms. Well, all of its inhabitants south of the Drairnos Mountains, anyway - the Sontéa of the North are... an interesting folk, you could say, but it's easy to forget about them sometimes since they prefer to keep to themselves and, as far as I can remember, they have never answered to either monarchs. Their culture, lifestyle, politics - all very different from us Hearthlanders who live south of the mountains.

There have been attempts throughout history to educate them, to bring them down here where they don't have to live in trees or wear rags like... like savages, but, well, those attempts have never gone well - they're very accustomed to their own ways, you see, so it's best to leave them be. If you care to learn more about these peculiar rainforest-dwellers, I can recommend a few books to you on what we know about them later.

Now, where was I? Yes, about the south...

GLOSSARY:
Arvania - A biodiverse continent to the south of the equator. Comprises of the westernmost part of the hemisphere.
Drairnos Mountains - a long chain of mountains separating the Hearthlands from the Sontéa. Referred to as Mother's Embrace by the Sontéa, as they believe it shelters them from the rest of Arvania.
Hearthlands - All the lands south of the Drairnos Mountains are collectively referred to as the Hearthlands.
Hearthlanders - All inhabitants living south of the Drairnos Mountains are broadly referred to as the Hearthlanders of Arvania.
Sontéa - Both the lands north of the Drairnos Mountains and the people who inhabit them are simply called the Sontèa. For distinction, the people are sometimes referred to as Sontéa of the North.

[a id]intro2[/a id]
You may not believe it now, but Vaemor was not always the crumbling ruins you see today. Roughly half of the now prominent Artheros Kingdom actually used to belong to the Kingdom of Vaemor, and it was a prosperous and magical place. Quite literally so - the Eltia are naturally gifted in the arcane arts and Vaemor was the only place in all of Arvania with schools dedicated to the education and practice of the magical arts. People from all over the continent travelled there to witness and learn from the best arcanists first-hand.

Magic has always been a rather controversial topic throughout the kingdom, however - it's a fascinating subject to most, but was also poorly regarded and feared by many, rightfully so in some cases. Magic can be used to accomplish so much, but that sort of power in the wrong hands can be a terrible thing. It started with a few reports of isolated incidents where magic had gone wrong or used for ill deeds, but as more and more of these incidents began to pile up, magic started to gain notoriety throughout the lands, seen as a threat, even. Soon, the arcane arts were deemed dangerous, unregulated sorcery, and people began to rally against all its practitioners. Restrictions were placed, rules were tightened, but there was still a lot of dissatisfaction on both sides. The Eltia fought for their rights to continue teaching and practicing magic, and this bred much conflict between the Kingdoms.

I'll spare you the details of the inevitable wars that followed, now known in history as the Persecution of Sorcery - bit of a grim topic for your first day here, hm? In any case, the books around here hold better information on it than I do, and I'm sure you can guess the outcome of the wars already - a look around Vaemor will tell you it's only a Kingdom in name these days, and it's ceded so much of its lands to Artheros.

But I've been rambling for far too long. Please, do take a look around and let me know if you need help finding anything.

GLOSSARY:
Artheros - The largest region of Arvania.
Artheros Kingdom - The dominant realm that controls most of Arvania.
Eltia - Native peoples of Vaemor, with a natural inclination for the arcane arts.
Kingdom of Vaemor - Once equal in power to and living in harmony with the Artheros Kingdom, the Kingdom of Vaemor is now a dying realm with little ruling power.
Persecution of Sorcery - A name for the wars between the two ruling Kingdoms in which the people of Artheros fought to extinguish the practices and teachings of sorcery in Arvania.
Vaemor - Once equal in size to Artheros, Vaemor is a diminishing region that has ceded most of its lands to Artheros during the Persecution of Sorcery.
