Hack Series: X/Y Rebirth - a light, 'adjusted difficulty'/Vanilla+ hack of X and Y

Is there documentation on locations of all catchable pokemon?
The only significant change to the wild encounters is the addition of wild Vivillon in a handful of select locations. Aside from that, most encounters are unchanged from base X/Y, so you can still use resources like Bulbapedia or Serebii to look up the locations of wild Pokémon.

Just keep in mind that the encounter rates for other Pokemon might differ slightly in areas with wild Vivillon.

is there any way to get that special torchic in this game?
Realistically, you could use PKHeX to add it in.
I've considered putting in an optional patch that turns the static Pidgey encounter at the beginning of the game into a Speed Boost Torchic. I find it a little jarring thematically, but it's the only realistic way I could incorporate it into the game (I think that's how BuffelSaft did it in Eternal X/Wilting Y iirc).

Edit (1/23/25): An optional patch to change the static Route 2 Pidgey encounter into a Speed Boost Torchic holding Blazikenite has been added. Make sure to read the instructions in the "optional - HA!Torchic with Mega Stone" folder for details.

Hey there.
I am NOT an experienced hacker, but this has been something I've had in the works for about 2 years, off and on.
So, basically everyone knows about how easy X/Y are, and while there are "challenge hacks" of X/Y, I personally wanted to find a more 'rebalanced/fixed' version of the games that makes the games harder, without the brutal difficulty said challenge hacks are known for; basically something closer to say Platinum or B2/W2 Challenge Mode (or BD/SP without the baked-in Exp. Share and affection). Turns out, those types of hacks aren't as common; the closest I could find was an abandoned hack and many theory-crafting videos/threads. So, I decided to make a light hack of my own essentially "fixing" the major boss battles, as well as a few minor stuff.
In short, this is a small and light "fixed/adjusted difficulty" hack of X/Y; the game is meant to be harder, but it's not a "challenge hack" in the traditional sense.

The summary of the major changes can be found in the Google Drive, but in short, most major battles have been changed either slightly or significantly (with either new Pokémon, better movesets, and/or held items. Higher IVs as well). A decent handful of minor trainer battles have gotten minor buffs as well (many trainers with only 1-2 Pokémon have received 1-2 more, especially in the Gyms and Victory Road). All the patterns of Vivillon can also be found in the wild.

Wild Vivillon pattern locations:

NOTES:
- The game still isn't designed with keeping the Exp. Share on in mind. You may be a tad underleveled if you don't use it at all, but leaving it on WILL make you very overleveled. I didn't want to give the game a huge level curve to balance out X/Y's non-scaling Exp. system. I recommend toggling it on and off when needed. If you want to impose level limits based on the Gym Leader's/Elite Four/Champion's aces, it goes as follows:
Spoiler:
- The game still uses mechanics from Gen 6. I considered adding in Gen 7 onward mechanics (move changes, stat changes, ability changes, etc.), but ultimately decided against it.
- Don't bother using Writs in the Battle Chateau. As of update 1.9.8, I've increased the levels of the postgame Gym Leader/E4/Champion fights to match the Black Writ of Challenge; using any Writs messes up their movesets.
- Like many hacks/mods, you probably have to play on Version 1.0 of X/Y. Installing updates may make the game crash, so just be wary of saving in Lumiose City; save in buildings rather than on the streets, just to be safe. If your game is updated and crashes occur, uninstall any updates (delete update files on your emulator or delete update data on your modded 3DS).
- The Mega Stone merchant in Coumarine only has his text altered in English. If you're playing in another language, he'll still mention that he sells Incense rather than Mega Stones. English is my native language, and is the only language I speak fluently, so changing this would be difficult for me (I don't want to rely on Google Translate).
- While the difficulty of this hack is greater than vanilla X/Y, it's not nearly as hard as other well-known hacks, as stated before. Because of this and because I haven't changed any Pokemon's stats/moves/etc., some Pokemon are still overpowered, ESPECIALLY Aegislash, which can easily solo the game after it's fully evolved. Just be mindful of that before playing.

Newest Update: Ver. 2.0.2 - (1/7/25)
Change: Skrelp now evolves at Level 37 instead of Level 48. This is to match Clauncher's evolution into Clawitzer, and I also think Skrelp just evolves way too late to be useful (since the game's level curve isn't changed too much). Litleo now evolves at Level 30 rather than 35 (A minor adjustment, but I found that it evolved a little too late to be useful otherwise).

Made entirely with pk3DS, kudos to Kaphotics and SciresM!

Buffel Saft; many of my evolution changes, purchasable Mega Stones, and a few misc. changes were taken from inspired by Eternal X/Wilting Y!
the hack looks great! Maybe I missed it somewhere along with reading it but can trade evos be obtained without trading them in this hack? Hope you have a great day!

Thanks!
Yeah, the details of the evolution changes should be at the end of the "Changes" docs, but trade evos are now either removed or optional. Pokemon that evolve via trading while holding a specific item evolve by leveling up with that item instead. Most other trade evolutions can also evolve at level 37, with the exception of Phantump/Pumpkaboo, who can evolve with a Dusk Stone (as well as trading).

Eevee's evolution methods are changed as well; Espeon requires a Sun Stone, Umbreon a Moon Stone, Glaceon a Shiny Stone, Leafeon a Leaf Stone, and Sylveon through high friendship.

How would I run this hack on an emulator other than Citra? I'm using Bizhawk and as far as I can see its 3DS core has no mod folder. Do I just use the patcher or do I need to do something else?

I'm unfamiliar with Bizhawk, but if the emulator doesn't support mods, you may need to use a different emulator that does. Not much I can do about that, unfortunately.

Ooo, I love this idea of a hack! I think you said that the only changes is all Vivillion forms available, but is there a way to get the mythicals also? I know it would be a lot of work, but what if a one time trade with an npc gave a mythical instead? Just a thought :P but thanks for reading

Not with the current tools, no. The Vivillon forms (and the optional patch that adds in the wild version exclusives) are just the wild encounter tables being altered to include them, but I'm pretty sure adding in brand-new NPCs to give/trade you Mythicals is not something that's possible right now.
Sorry about that, but I hope you enjoy the hack regardless!

Oh no, I wasn't thinking of brand new NPCs, but if you overwrote current NPCs that trade you pokemon? Like in Snowbelle City, a NPC will trade you a Bisharp for a Jigglypuff, but what if you made them give you a mythical pokemon (let's say Volcanion) for a hard to get pokemon (maybe Haxourous, Salamance or Garchomp)?

Also, maybe Diantha post game could trade you a Diance instead of a Raltz?

And, there's two trainers who randomly appear in hotels, and will trade you a Magikarp or Eevee after you first talk to them a few days later. I think Hoops might be fitting for one of them?

Anyways, thanks for reading and for the hack!

Not sure about changing any of the trades for now, but I'll definitely keep it in mind!

Going to start my playthrough of this today, and wondering, does this rom hack include the new megas introduced in ORAS in anyway?

No, the process of doing that is a lot more complicated than you'd think, and comes with a lot of baggage.
I know Ancestral X manages to do it, but for that hack, it's definitely not a seamless addition, and a few sacrifices had to be made for it, iirc.
For Rebirth, I decided it just wasn't worth doing.

Hi,

I just downloaded all the files and dumped it all in citra on my android phone, but it's not working. How do i make this work?
I'm not going to know exactly what's wrong with little information. The official Citra for Android, before it was taken down by Nintendo, did not support mods, as far as I remember, and I don't know what version of the emulator your using. I also don't know where you placed your files.

I suggest either downloading Lime3DS or Citra MMJ (you'll have to Google to find them, since I'm not entirely sure we're allowed to link to emulators here).
After that, and after you download your ROM of Pokemon X or Y (I can't link to that either, sorry!), you can follow these instructions for either Lime3DS or MMJ.
The title ID for Pokemon X is "0004000000055D00", and the title ID for Pokemon Y is "0004000000055E00". Afterwards, you need to place the 'romfs' folder and 'code.ips' file into the folder with the name of the game's title id.

Hi,

unfortunately i can't get the mod working on citra.

I'm using the latest official version of citra (2104 nightly). I uninstalled the 1.5 title update and put the romfs folder and code.ips file into the mods folder. The game starts fine at first and goes to the point where flechtling wakes the protagonist. After that i get a black screen. It's not the infamous citra Pokemon xy black screen bug, a lot of people got in the early stages of citra, because when i uninstall the mods files, the game is working completely fine after the fletchling scene.

Edit: Also other pokemon hacks like Eternal X/ Wilting Y work completly fine for me.

Hmm. It looks like the issue seems to specifically be for Y. I'm looking into the issue right now.
EDIT: Alright, I think I got it fixed. If your issue was specifically trying to get the Torchic version of Y Rebirth to work, then the issue seems to have been with the dllfield.cro file not working for Y specifically (I must have copy-pasted the one for X). The new files are up now.
