I stopped watching the show on KidsWB after Misty left long ago. BTW, that was the only show I watched on KidsWB back them. And hell no... I do not like the dubbed Yu-Gi-Oh! Do you know anyone who stopped watching Pokémon cold turkey after Misty left (or a few episodes after Misty left.)

Pokémon was the apotheosis of 4Kids (especially when compared to the dubbed Yu-Gi-Oh!). I thank Veronica Taylor, Rachael Lillis, Eric Stuart, and Maddie Blaustein for providing me a very a pleasant childhood.

I watched the first season of Pokémon when it came out. While I think I grew out of the cartoon, I never grew out of the game. The show now seems very repetitive, I don't really see how it's lasted so long. The characters aren't particularly special or interesting, but the designs for them are really cute.

And I agree, I think it's gotten worse (the little that I've seen of the newer seasons) since Misty left. Misty just was a lot more interesting and had much more personality than Dawn or May. Dawn and May have really cute designs, but that's about the extent of their appeal to me. (Sorry Dawn/May fans!) I mean, I like the, just not enough to watch the show, haha. I guess you could say I'm more a fan of them in the games (since, well, I'm playing as them!) than in the actual show.

How did you grow out of the cartoon? When did you stop watching it?

I "grew" out of the cartoon after the Orange Islands (and I was fortunate enough to see a rerun of "Charizard's Burning Ambition"), and I became reinterested in Master Quest, and stopped watch it forever when Misty left. Misty was one of the main reasons why the show was worth watching from my perspective.

the show at first was pretty good :D
but now it seems so repetitive...
ash just wins his gym badges and dawn with the contests
    team rocket blasts off again
    brock cooks
    its too boring! :(
it was better with misty in it :P

Do you still watch the show? BTW, did you watch the original episodes? Did you see them when they came out about 10 years. I remember them, and watching those episodes were one of the happiest moments in my life.

Yes, I've seen them both with Misty and without. She was nice at first, but eventually downgraded into almost as boring and flat a character as Ash's other female groupies did except with romantic undertones. I never missed her, except for some parts when May came along and stopped using her 'Ah, Pokémon, RUN AWAY! AAAH!' attitude and began using her Generic Cheery Female Lead one.

Also: I can't believe I used up my 777th post on yet another thread proclaiming how when Misty left the show automatically failed.

    I don't care. It's just a cartoon.

Ok, it is a very well-known view among Pokémon fans that when Misty left, the show collapsed. I only wanted to know if there were many people who stopped watching the show after Misty left. How many people were like that? Do you know others who stopped watching after Misty left? What are the demographics of the Misty lovers? Are they all 9-10 year olds in 1998 and were watching the show from the beginning, while the ones who are currently watching the show are younger than the Misty lovers?

One reason is that Misty, Ash, and Brock reminded me of my pleasant childhood, and May and Max weren't apart of that.

Again, do you Pokémon was a high-water mark for 4Kids?

I started wathing Pokémon at a very young age, and began about halfway through the first season. I'm still watching the anime, if only because it's nice to have something that isn't the wonder-program that Star Wars: The Clone Wars wants to be to wake up to on Saturdays... though now it's being aired at seven in the morning I may have to resort to watching it on the Internet. Misty leaving the show had nothing to do with it being bad; it was always sort of childish, and yes, they started giving up on it. But that's just because it's a long-running series and the execs thought that its popularity would keep a ediocre show afloat.

And guess what? They were right.

Regardless of what people wearing nostalgia-tinted glasses want to believe about how Misty was a direct indicator on whether the show was good or not, it was going to be boring in a few years even if Misty never entered the show and, say, Leaf with a flat whiny personality was in her place.

Yes, any of the episodes after the Kanto and Johto episoids are SH*T! The new episodes are really, really, dumb! i mean, he's (Ash) is traveling with what a 10 year old?!?! And the show starting to get EDUCATIONAL!!!!! IT'S MADNESS!!!!!

I do still watch the new seasons of it; But I will admit they aren't as good as what they used to be, but all that could be due to the fact that I've grown up more since the original series started; The older people get, sometimes the less fun and exciting things become. We all just eventually grow up and sometimes out of the things we used to love as kids; It's just a part of life. But once again when Misty was taken out of the show, I did somewhat lose some interest in the anime; She was in fact one of my favorite characters and still is. I just don't think May and Dawn are as good as what Misty was. They don't seem to have that well, I really don't know what it to be exact. But maybe because Misty had more of a personality, not to mention she was one tough cookie xD

I've heard and read stuff that Misty is supposed to appear again in the 12th season of Pokemon; But I somehow doubt it will be as a main, even though I wish differently. But at least we may get to see her at some point.
But like I said even with her gone, and Pokemon just not being as good as what it used to be; since it has gotten very repeative I still watch it. xD

How is the show becoming educational?

Can't be bothered replying fully to another "Pokmeon sucks now" thread but all I'll say this, the show is more than one character. There are other interesting characters than Misty, like Ash, Brock, Team Rocket etc.

Have you also ever considered the possibility that the reason you find it childish now is........... well that you arn't a child anymore? Nothing major has really changed with the format of the show. He still does the same crap every episodes, except there's a new female companion (to keep it fresh) and obviously new Pokemon.

The animation quality has majorly improved since the first season, the episodes are taking less time to dub, the battling more resembles the style of the games and they're not modifying the dubs as much from the original.

I wonder how many of the people saying Johto was one of the best seasons have actually watched every single episode of it o.O I still haven't watched all the episodes through it, I can't bring myself to watch through all the dull fillers. There *are* good episodes, but so many pointless ones...Misty didn't do much for the show in Johto, I thought.

lol. Dumb, but educational. This makes sense.

Johto, of course, had more filler. For example, it took about 80 episodes for Ash to start his journey, "earn" (depends on several badges) eight Kanto badges, and compete in the Indigo league, while Johto took about 150 episodes (starting from EP 120 and ending at about 275). At least those episodes had Misty in them. However, Johto was good on "Master Quest" since I like the episodes when Ash battles Clair, and the match between Ash and Gary.

Kanto had better filler than Johto though.

The originals weren't significantly modified in the dub though.

It wasn't like Yu-Gi-Oh! where the dubbers destroyed everything.

Personally, I prefered the show when Kasumi/Misty left, then it started going blegh when they introduced Hikari/Dawn (but Shinji makes that up XD). The show hasn't been all that repetitive. People see the whole 'Manmoo not listening to Hikari' crap and think it's exactly the same as season 1 and 2, but it's not that similar. The only thing I don't care much for during this season are the legendary Pokémon. Too many of them and too many conflicts between Arceus and Mew (but the members of the Lake Trio and Ginga-Dan are totally awesome).

As for the 4Kids dub, it sucked royally. Bad editing and bad script-writing FTL. They turned almost every riceball in Hoenn into a giant sandwhich, a cracker, or a cookie and it looked like crap. Totally obviously edited. Not only that, but they made-up lines to the show for no good reason. Pokémon USA does that with Roketto-Dan, too, but they do it a lot less often (and they keep the kanji in! <3).

The voices for the 4Kids dub weren't too bad. I prefered Musashi/Jessie's in 4Kids, as I did Kojiro/James's voice, but Nyaasu/Meowth's voice for Pokémon USA is much better than the other one in my opinion. Satoshi/Ash's new voice trumps his old one by a mile, but they could've done better with Takeshi/Brock's as it gets on my nerves. XD

Adding to that, 4Kids almost always replaced the background music or added it in when there was none. They chose sucky voices for the Pokémon when they could've just kept it the same. Take Erebuu/Electabuzz for example. The Pokémon USA dub keeps the Japanese voice and it sounds just fine in the English dub.

As for using Rachel Lillis to dub Pikachuu's voice when they 'lost the sound tapes', they could've just edited in Pikachu's voice from a previous episode or something. They edit everything and its brother anyway. .

And don't get me started on Shigeru/Gary's voice. @~@ Oh dear lord. . >.>" It was just terrible. Did his voice actor has a lisp or something? =/ It didn't sound anything like his Japanese voice. .

And why would 4Kids keep in the yen prices and stuff in the anime? If they edit everything, why didn't they make it look like dollars instead? The prices seemed outrageous to us Americans because we're not usually familiar with yen. .

So partially ends my rant. I may be back later for more. XD

The exchange rate for the USD/JPY is about 90 now. I think one could just move the decimal two places to the left for USD pricing and it would still make sense.

They did that with YGO, but I didn't think they did that with the first 80 episodes as I thought they kept the original background music. If anyone knows otherwise than tell me.

BTW, was the background song in the 4Kids version of "Can't Beat the Heat" when Gary's Blastoise and Ash's Charizard were in hand to hand combat the same as the Japanese song. I really liked that theme.

Not sure which one you're asking about, so I'll say both. ^^ YGO has always had purely dub music all the way through, throughout the whole episode. Pokemon has always had a mixture of dub and Japanese music, except for the movies where the first 3 had all dub music and the rest have all Japanese background music (with a few exceptions).

I guess I have to get some of the original episodes just to compare the background music.

I am not embarrassed because I like the dub, but I suppose that is before they screw up things such as Yu-Gi-Oh! as 4Kids dubbed Pokémon in 1998.

    wat

    Conjecture and opinions != facts

Another day, another "WE <3 KASUMI SHE SO KAWAII >3<" thread. People only grew attached to Misty after she left. Despite the amount of people who clamour for his departure, Ash being written out would have the same effect. I see the point in people preferring Misty as a character to May and Dawn - she was a lot more tomboyish and was actually a very good role model in that she was a strong female character, and not simply eye candy. The fact is, however, times change. The anime has to adapt itself to appeal to a new wave of young people - the sort of people who might never even have heard of Pokémon Red and Blue. Using new characters to put a breath of fresh air into a show is nothing new, so just go with it.

As for accusations of dipped quality since Misty being written out, I say that those people are probably firmly within the grip of romantic nostalgia. You can level the charge of newer stories being uninteresting, but a lot of them have a firm basis in older episodes. As for those episodes that don't, I think they are some of the better ones. The Tag Battle Tournament arc, the Pokémon Summer School episodes and the two-part Ash vs. Shinji battle are highlights for me. Voice acting has only ever gotten better since PUSA took over the dubbing, and art has steadily improved, with perhaps a few exceptions with dodgy animation directors.

I bet the OP is one of those people who refuse to acknowledge anything past the first 251, or maybe even the first 151. All because of some perceived drop in quality, when in fact the series is experiencing a resurgence after a poor time during the third generation.

tl;dr: take off your rose-tinted spectacles and stop being so nostalgic.
