Video game villains can range from some of the most badass characters we'll ever to see to some pretty horrible ones. From their dialogue to their aestehtic appeal to the way that they affect the world around them, there are numerous ways in which a video game villain can impact us. Today, with some special help from users Aslan and Achromatic, we will be taking a look at some of our favorite video game villains of the past.

Video game villains can range from some of the most badass characters we'll ever to see to some pretty horrible ones. From their dialogue to their aestehtic appeal to the way that they affect the world around them, there are numerous ways in which a video game villain can impact us. Today, with some special help from users Aslan and Achromatic, we will be taking a look at some of our favorite video game villains of the past.
The Cogs, Toon Town Online
One of the most memorable video game villains for me were the Cogs from Toontown Online. The idea of the Cogs was that they were robotic businessmen who wanted to take over Toontown by setting up their headquarters, turning the shops owned by toons into their corporations or buildings and taking over the streets whilst also establishing factories, courts that could prosecute toons and turning the colourful landscape of Toontown into a dull and colourless place. You as the toon, had to stop them by destroying them through using gags such as birthday cakes, hoses, hypno goggles and even grand pianos because the cogs can't handle jokes or the force of being crushed by anything from flower pots to a cruise liner. The cogs were split into four different types - Sellbots, Lawbots, Cashbots and Bossbots with eight different cogs for each and a boss of each Cog type. Some examples of cogs you'd find roaming in Toontown include Loan Sharks, Bloodsuckers, Micromanagers, Flunkies and Telemarketers. The cogs when engaged in battle, attempt to attack you with 'jargon', 'double talk', 'shred', 'power trip', 'downsize' and a lot of other attacks that are reference to law, finance and terms used in business which now that I think about it, was a really clever idea as these attacks would lower your health. The cogs were the most memorable video game villains I had to deal with as a kid and they've certainly put me off stepping into the business world for at least a while!
Mettaton, Undertale
More robots! Mettaton is from the extremely popular game Undertale, and he's quickly become one of my favourite video game villains for his hilarious personality and his approach towards trying to kill you. Mettaton is certainly creative when it comes to plotting your destruction, whether that be combining cooking and jetpacks, attacking you with high heels, forcing you into a deadly news report or trapping you in a musical before trying to shut you in a wall of fire. He has some of the best lines in the game and he's a 'freaking rectangle' as termed by one of his employees. Mettaton also has an alternate form that makes you either admire, or cower in absolute fear when you see it. Regardless, what more could you want from a rectangle on a wheel? The sole television star of the Underground who cares about his viewers' enjoyment of his shows, Mettaton's also got a few secrets that will take you aback but appreciate him a lot more as a villain. Confident and charismatic yet also sarcastic and deadpan, he's truly something special and one of the few villains that can pull off a pose you'd find in Jojo.
Mom, Binding of Isaac
Mom is a character in the Binding of Isaac that hears the voice of God one day and is brainwashed into proving her devotion and faith to him. The voice tells her that Isaac's soul has been corrupted by sin and that she must fix it. She obeys by first depriving Isaac of affection before taking away Isaac's clothes, possessions and locking Isaac in his room to seal him from 'the evil of the world'. The voice of God tells her that is not enough though, and that she must sacrifice her son. She obeys but before she can kill Isaac, he escapes into the basement. More is revealed about her further on as the game progresses but she is shown as abusive towards her son with some items and monsters in the game that reflects what she has done in her attempt to purge Isaac of sin. Mom also has her own battle which makes her look truly horrifying. Mom is a very interesting approach on what a video game villain is and whilst she believes she is doing right by following the voice of God, her actions in the storyline and game are ultimately evil.
Lysandre, Pokemon X/Y
This dude was INSANE, especially for a Pokémon game. Lysandre's intentions were clearly very evil and made the lacklustre X/Y a bit more interesting, from my perspective. I'd be interested to see more bad guys like him appear in Pokémon in the future! He's also in charge of Team Flare and well... they're fabulous.
Tom Nook, Animal Crossing
Hear me out. Tom Nook is a pure evil character that forces a tiny child to pay off an entire home loan. It's true that he doesn't HAVE to give you a house since you're without money, but is he just gonna let a little kid be homeless in the cold and rain? Knowing him, he'd highly consider it. Home loans are ridiculous in Animal Crossing and making a child pay for it all is even more ridiculous! It's so expensive that it's gonna take you months or longer to pay it all off.
Ethelberd, Rune Factory 4
I'm willing to bet that most of you haven't heard of this character or game even, but it's fantastic and this guy had to be on my list. Not only is he a ruthless murderer who rules a very large cult, he appears later on as one of the scariest monsters in the final part of the game. This guy is no joke. I'm terrified of him to this day!
Andrew Ryan, Bioshock
Bioshock has one of the most mesmorizing settings and plots in video game history. Filled with a rich culture just waiting to be discovered, the aesthetics of Rapture is something to behold. And who built this underwater dystopia? Andrew Ryan. Andrew Ryan ist he man behind the scenes who created this hell underwater that you must venture through, from Big Daddy's to Splicers, it's all because of him. And in the end, you come across one of the biggest plot twists that makes Andrew Ryan a character that will forever stand out in my mind as a video game juggernaut.
Line Block, Tetris
Okay, hear me out on this one. This motherfucking **** is the bane of my existance. In Tetris, it never comes when you actually need it, almost as if the piece is taunting you with each line failure that follows suit. And when you actually do fill a line becasue you have no other options, the game decides to drop 4 or 5 of them in a row in suit. There's a great CollegeHumor skit that sums it up pretty nicely that y'all should check out when you get a chance - you'll then under my frustrations and find that it's quite in reason to feel the way I'm feeling.
Handsome Jack, Borderlands 2
For myself, I cannot think of any other villain that's as fun and creative as Handsome Jack. With his witty "Butt Stallion"- esque dialogue, he hnads down made Borderlands 2 one of the most fun games that I've ever played. For most of the game, I almost felt bad chasing him down and foiling his plans. The game does a great job balancing his evil ambitions with a great human personality that gives a lot of depth to the character. I'll just drop one of his quotes here to prove my point: "See, this is what I don't get about you bad guys. You know the hero's gonna win, but you never just die quickly-- man, this one guy in New Haven, right? City's burning, people dying, blah blah blah. This guy rushes me with a spoon. A fricking spoon. And I'm just laughing. So I scoop out his eyeballs with it, and his kids are all, "aghhhhh!," and, ah...you had to be there.
