  • The God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully.

Have you even read the Bible? He only punishes those who are too proud of themselves, and that's why he crushes every culture in the world, even the one he chose, the Jews.

The Jews especially - that's why they don't have their own country. They, by their own nature, are too proud to be God's chosen people. Therefore, they must sacrifice something, and it's peace.

And you can't accuse someone of being a control freak when he owns the whole thing. You can't accuse me of being a control freak if I want to listen to only the songs I like on my iPod that I bought with my own money. That's only reasonable.

    Why do you hate us?

  • Well that would depend. You could call Him a control freak in other scenarios perhaps.

For example, when Bill Gates led Microsoft, he wasn't a control freak because he owned Microsoft. If he could be considered one, it would be about things inside the bigger picture, and not the bigger picture itself. That's just generalizing the problem, like saying all Jewish people are money-hungry and all Muslims are terrorists. Some may be defined that way, but not all of them; just like how there are money-hungry people who are Canadian or black, or terrorists who are atheists or Christians.

So if God Himself could be considered a "control freak" (and I don't consider him that way), it might be over little things, like wanting to teach people lessons by making them believe that in order to be a true believer, you needed to sacrifice your son (Abraham). That's a little over-the-top, power-abusive and can have Him seen as a "control freak;" but simply creating everything doesn't make Him one.

imo, humans break down over stress running a mere company, municipality, country, etc. Those are "big jobs" for humans, and some crack to the point where they kill their families and then themselves. Now imagine being in charge of everything in the whole universe. That's a lot more stressful. Yet He doesn't crack. He hasn't wiped us out - and given the power He has, He very well could with as little as a thought - even though we're, imo, pretty sad and sinful creations overall. Lots of love, there.

    Anyway.

If Bill Gates tried to control the daily work lives of every single person in Microsoft, then yes, he would be a control freak. Just to add on to Yusshin's metaphor - although he owns Microsoft and pays those people to be there, that doesn't mean that he wouldn't be a control freak if he had to be part of EVERY little thing in the company.

When his "punishing" is death, and death = hell before the New Testament (at least according to Christianity), do you really think someone being proud for 70 years or so deserves an eternity in agony?

    Pretty must this. ^

I see it as justified. If He hadn't actually made the world and all that in the first place, it (obviously) wouldn't exist. So why is it unreasonable?

Thinking too deeply into this makes me feel like humans are God's pets, though haha.

  • I gotta say though, he does allow free choice. That's why humans are so crappy in the first place.

Jesus was just God giving up on leading us back to him, if you think about it.

no you can't. If you told me to listen to Beyoncé and Daft Punk only on my iPod, the one that I bought with my own money, and I declined, you can't say that I'm a control freak of my iPod, because I get to choose what to do with it.

Why should being God's pets be bad, though?

Without a God or something like that, we'd just be…existing. Wouldn't that be boring?
