We don't have any school next week due to the snow. Anyone else on the east coast (of the USA) enjoying the snow as well? Or hating it because they're the ones shoveling it?

Fire Monotype Challenge: Part Three - Past the Point of No Return

    Trainer Name: Seb
    Badges: 2
    Generation: I (on Blue)
    Location: Cerulean City

    Log:

    • Made it past Mt. Moon. I got a Clefairy for HM Slave usage and named it Kristen (I name most HM Slaves after celebrities I dislike for various reasons)
    • Jumped over the infamous ledge of "no return." Gasp.
    • Sold a bunch of useless TMs. I didn't know Water Gun was a TM move back then. Pfft.
    • Went to fight Rival Holden again. Pidgeotto went down in two hits. Abra is just free experience. Rattata fainted after just one hit. Squirtle (unevolved? Come on!) went down to 3 Scratches. Ringo is at Level 27 now. Haha. I'm actually scared about when I get my next Pokemon, it'll be so underleveled compared to Ringo.
    • Burned down the Nugget Bridge. Laughed when the Rocket Grunt said, "I'll make you an offer you can't refuse!"
    • Used Scratch on a wild Bellsprout and left it with one HP. I caught it (for Cut usage) and named it Robert.
    • Got the S.S. Ticket from Bill. And caught a Caterpie for Pokedex reasons (I've never gone through Rock Tunnel without Flash before.)
    • Stepped into the Cerulean Gym. This is going to be interesting.
    Cerulean Gym Battle Log:

    • Trainers went down relatively easy (stupid Goldeen and her Supersonic). The only thing I can attack Misty with is Scratch, which is going to do nothing whatsoever.
    • Ringo used Scratch on Staryu, and it brought it down to below 50% health (?!?). Misty then used an X Defend on Staryu, but I got a Critical Hit on another Scratch. Starmie came in and, amusingly, my Scratches do about the same amount of damage as her Water Guns (about 4HKO). Luckily, Ringo was faster than Starmie. She got me down to 14 HP left, but I finished Starmie off. That was a close one... Cascadebadge get!

I'm having serious trouble against Lorelei. Omastar is the only warrior able to take hits from her teams Aurora Beams, but his attack is quite bad. I've lost about four times now, time to buy a lot of Revives / Hyper Potions. Onix' Speed + Rock Throw hits Lorelei's Ice type Pokemon somewhat decently. So if I use Omastar as a medic I might just stand a chance. :)

    Will update thoroughly later.

  • Ok, i did all the stuff with the weather institute again now, and additionally replaced Zigzagoon by a Tropius, got to Lilycove, removed Masquerain's Flash, walked all the way back to Mauville and Slateport to get the Ice Beam TM for Masquerain and the Acro Bike for Heracross. Before going into the Safari Zone, i decided to challenge Winona. Masquerain's Ice Beam cut through her team like a knife through butter, but her last Pokemon, Skarmory survived a hit, used ONE Sand-Attack, and i missed 5 times in a row, which caused in Masquerain getting killed by multiple Aerial Aces. I still had 2 teammembers left, but I changed my team plans so I decided to do a second attempt instead. This time, Pelipper didn't get OHKOd, but it couldn't hurt Masquerain, and Skarm got no evasionhax, so i won. Then, I went to the Safari Zone, and while trying to find a Heracross, I came across this:
    282id51_th.png

The first shiny in 3rd generation I ever met up to today, and of course I failed to catch it.
Still no good Heracross up to now, the only one I managed to catch was male and brave.

    Team:
    Spr_3r_291.png

    Pirates! / Ninjask f Lv.38 @ Silk Scarf
    Adamant Nature / Speed Boost
    - Slash
    - Fury Cutter
    - Swords Dance
    - Dig
I decided that 2 Pokemon should be able to do this better than 3 or 4, so I'm dropping Ninjask as physical Bug in favor of Heracross, ...
    Spr_3r_314.png

    Galileo M. / Illumise f Lv.31 @ /
    Timid Nature / Oblivious

Shiny Phanpy must be common. I found one in Pokemon Fire Red. I also got a shiny Growlithe in Fire Red. I migrated them to Platinum but they'll be erased when I complete Johto and Sinnoh in this challenge. I only have Platinum, and don't have wifi anymore, so meh.. :(

    Latest Progress:
Headed to the Viridian City Gym and won the Earthbadge(?). Too easy.
Healed my Pokemon, stocked up on essentials and headed West only to bump into my rival, Smithy. These random run-ins happen way too often, I think he's stalking me.
Defeated Smithy handily, scraping past that darn Gyarados using Omastar.
Headed to Victory Road, entered the cave that appears to be a brick wall.
Found TM Sky Attack, taught to Aerodactyl.
After a surprisingly short journey, I arrived at the exit.
Entered the Pokemon League, healed my comrades, and deposited Paras (HM Cut slave) in the PC.
OK. Lorelei time. This was one hell of a challenge, and ended up using over half of my Revives / Potions, but after four attempts, and a lot of reviving, Onix, Aerodactyl, and Omastar pulled through and won the match.
My next challenge was a man much like myself by the name of Bruno. He lacks so much skill and I walked all over him using Omastar's Surf, and Aerodactyl's Fly to take out his team.
Agatha. Now I never knew Ghost types were vulnerable to Ground type moves, but when I found out, I OHKO'd most of her team using Graveler and Rhydon's Earthquake.
Rhydon learned Horn Drill. (Great, so I wasted Fissure >_>)
    Omastar learned Blizzard (TM).
Now, the big fellow that I had feared all this time. Lance, the Dragon expert. Fortunately for me, he turned out to be a load of hype, after scraping past his Gyarados I managed to use an X Accuracy on Omastar and swept out his team using Blizzard. Way too easy.
    Omastar learned Hydro Pump!
Wow. This is some bull @&(*!. I'm sorry but if there is a new champion, either Lance (as ex-champion) or Lorelei (as the first Elite) should leave the league. Not fair. >_>
Still. I managed to defeat Smithy on the first try. His level 65 Venusaur, my biggest fear, got OHKO'd by Aerodactyl's Sky Attack. :D
    Fin!

    Team:
    Gravelar - Level 49
    Spr_1b_075.png

    Moveset:

So, I look forward to starting Johto either tonight or tomorrow! Sign me up for Pokemon Crystal! So I can get a Larvitar from the Game Corner rather than all the way at Mt. Silver. :)

  • BOW FOR THE NEW WATER UMC CHAMPION!

Well, I found a day in which I could play a lot and played up to Cynthia without any problems. I got all boxed pokemon in my team and started the league challenge.(after beating my rival)

Aaron was easy by gastrodons Rock Slide.

Bertha was even easyer by using Empoleon's Grass knot and Surf.

Flint also didn't give me any challenge, because only Lopunny didn't get a Super effective hit. Blizzard for Drifblim, Surf for the rest.

The fourth person (can't remember his name) was not hard at all, I got only gastrodon die by Alakazam's energy ball. Empoleon killed with Surf after a missed Focus blast.

Then, the last person possible to stop me from beating the Water UMC was Cynthia:

The battle started out well with a 2HKO for me with Empoleon's Surf while I got a little damage by Dark Pulse.

Then a garchomp came out. I would need a little luck beating it and I switched to Quaksire to take a Giga impact. (I can do that, since it's my chosen type) Then I 1HKOd Garchomp by Blizzard in the recharge turn.

The next pokemon out was Lucario, which I sent Gastrodon at. He did quite some damage with Mud Bomb and then gets killed by a second Dragon Pulse. Empoleons Surf did the rest.

Now that my biggest threat was out of my way she sent out gastrodon, which I simply Grass knotted to death.

Then Milotic came out, which I used Bibarel on. First Swagger while she fails at using Mirror coat. Then I used Super fang and she made an Aqua ring. After another Super fang and a hurt itself in confusion Cynthia desided to use a Full restore and I get killed by Surf. Then I used Empoleon's Grass knot and dealt a bit more than half damage, but I die by Mirror coat. I sent out Floatzel and used Max revive on Empoleon. then I could use Crunch once which I get killed after by a second Surf. Empoleon then did the deadly Grass knot again.

Roserade was too easy, Blizzard killed while I got only a bit damage by Extrasensory.

So I then was the newest Champion!

    Team that beat the league:

    Empoleon lvl 65
    Surf
    Blizzard
    Flash Cannon
    Grass knot

    Floatzel lvl 50
    Waterfall
    Crunch
    Strenght
    Agility

    Gastrodon lvl 45
    Surf
    Blizzard
    Mud Bomb
    Rock Slide

    Bibarel lvl 44
    Swagger
    Rock Climb
    Super fang
    Amnesia

    Quacsire lvl 35
    Amnesia
    Yawn
    Waterfall
    Strenght

So put me up as the champion.

    ______________________________________________________________

Now I continue with a rock type UMC.

Starting at pokemon Leafgreen. Chose Bulbasaur as my starter because only Charizard isn't super effective at Rock. I went to the gym, simply run trough everything, skipping as many trainers as possible. Went to Mt moon to catch a Geodude. Now going back to challenge the trainers I skipped.

    Geodude lvl 14
    Rock Throw
    Rock tomb
    Defense Curl
    Tackle

  • I never thought that would be possible, beating this challenge while releasing all Pokemon that faint... (wait, didn't Bibarel faint some time before?)

Ah, whatever, here's my newest progress:
After spending quite some time in the Safari Zone, I'm now finally the proud owner of a Heracross with a halfway decent nature, Naughty. I also cleared Mt.Pyre, the Team Magma base and the sea routes between Petalburg, Dewford and Slateport now. On to Mossdeep!

    Team:
    Spr_3r_284.png

    Flash / Masquerain f Lv.52 @ Mystic Water
    Modest Nature / Intimidate
    - Bubblebeam
    - Stun Spore
    - Ice Beam
    - Giga Drain
Silver Wind was a STAB move, but Giga Drain utilizes Masquerain's way better Special Attack, and it helps against the common water types.
    Spr_3r_214.png

    Sheracross / Heracross f Lv.39 @ Silk Scarf
    Naughty Nature / Swarm
    - Secret Power
    - Bulk Up
    - Rock Tomb
    - Brick Break
Ok, Naughty isn't exactly the best of all natures, and Guts would have been a lot better than Swarm, but whatever, it rocks anyway.
Brick Break for most stuff, Rock Tomb is horrible, but good for coverage, Secret Power is filler, Bulk Up for boosting. Pretty obvious.

Marshtomp Lv. 25 (Surf, Rocksmash, Foresight, Mud Sport)
Tropius Lv. 26 (Fly, Flash, Cut, Strength)

Fire Monotype Challenge: Part Four - Total Destruction and Awesomeness

    Trainer Name: Seb
    Badges: 3
    Generation: I (on Blue)
    Location: Vermillion City

    Log:

    • Defeated the Rocket Grunt and received the TM for Dig. I could probably abuse it for the next gym, but I think I'll save it for now.
    • Made it through the next route with no major problems. Ringo is close to twice the level of most of the Pokemon on that route. He also learned Slash.
    • I think I caught a Meowth for Pokedex reasons. I'll just release it later.
    • Arrived in Vermillion City and received the Bike Voucher (I LOVE the music here).
    • ... and on the S.S. Anne.
    • The Critical Hit ratio for Slash is insane. I know its boosted, but this is pretty insane. 99% of the hits are Critical Hits. Are Critical Hits calculated differently in Gen I or what?
    • Ringo evolved into Charizard! YESS!!
    • Rival fight with Holden again. Pidgeotto's Quick Attack did a grand total of 5 HP of damage. Pfft. Slash 1HKOd everything in sight with its crazy Critical Hit nonsense. I'm assuming the Elite Four will be a lot more difficult than this, though.
    • Rubbed the Captain's back and received HM01 Cut. Time to teach it to Robert the Bellsprout. Might as well do the Gym here because I have enough time.
    • Oh, and caught a Magikarp and Diglett for Pokedex purposes. Hooray, I can get a crappy HM.
    • Oh, and found a Dugtrio in the Diglett Cave en route to Viridian City. Ringo was faster and destroyed it with a Slash.
    • Received said crappy HM05 Flash. Now it's actually time to go to the gym.
    Vermillion Gym Battle Log:

    • I thought Ringo's new-found Flying type would make the match slightly more difficult. Man, was I wrong. Slash 1HKOd everything. Do I really need to put in anymore detail? The hardest part was that annoying trash can puzzle.
    Team:
    rbspr006.png

    Ringo (Level 38)
    - Slash
    - Ember
    - Leer
    - Rage

Congratulations 11wildy! And good luck on your new challenge!

  • In gen 1, critical hits ratio depends on the speed difference between the Pokemon, and since a Charizard in its high 30s is a lot faster than the level 15-20 mostly unevolved Pokemon around Vermilion, you will of course do a lot of crits.

So update on my Johto progress over the last few days:

Chose Totodile as starter for an HM slave and cos Meganium is weak to bug moves.
    Caught Weedle and Ledyba
Destroyed Bellsprout tower with Weedle, which ended as Beedrill
Eventually beat Gym '1, with more difficulty than wanted.
    Beat second gym quite easily.
Headbutted more trees than I ever thought possible to catch Pineco.
Also caught Paras, but never used.
Had the luck of it being Saturday, and caught Scyther.
Traded Scyther to and from Gold to evolve it to Scizor.
Bred Scizor with Beedrill to get another Scyther.
    Owned 3rd gym with Scizor.
    Headbutted more trees, caught Heracross.
    Owned 4th gym with Scizor.
Owned 5th gym with Scyther, Ledyba and Heracross.
    6th gym proved impossible.
    Defeated red gyrados.
    Owned team rocket.
7th gym vs Scizor=another badge with no effort.
Went back to 6th gym and used Ledian's dig and dynamicpunch.
Got team rocket to disband again, evolving Pineco is the process.
Beat Dragonlady with Ledian's Ice punch.
    Went through victory road.
And that's where I am now.

...Is it just me or is Johto in GSC a lot more...pathetic than Kanto was in RBY? (especially the rival, this guy in GSC cant even faint my pokemon, whereas the rival in RBY was a well-deserved champion).

I guess it's cos GSC has a lot more to do after Elite 4...

    Team:

    Scyther, lv37

    Scizor, lv42

    Beedrill, lv34

    Heracross, lv35

    Ledian, lv35

    Foretress, lv32

Ok Update on my most successful day so far:

    Trained Scizor in Victory Road.
Attempted Elite 4 several times, losing only to Houndoom or Charizard.
During those attempts Scizor became level 57.
Bought Carbos' so Scizor could outspeed the fire pokemon.
Beat Elite Four with only Scizor, no potions needed.
    Beat Lance with only Scizor.
Sweeped all of Kanto's gyms with only Scizor.
Defeated Red with only Scizor and many revivals of Scizor in order for Quick Claw to let me outspeed his Charizard.
Completed game: Hero of this game: Scizor lvl 77.

(Am reluctant to move on, cos in Sapphire I will have no chance of obtaining Scizor, and its my favourite pokemon, but as I wish to finish my Bug challenge and move on, I guess I am done with the second generation. Tomorrow begins Sapphire.)

    Planned team for Sapphire:

    Masquerain
    Beautifly
    Dustox
    Ninjask
    Shedinja
--------- <- any suggestions for the last bug (I've never used Illumise or Volbeat, are they any good? :P).

    Haaaaahh... Bugs in Hoenn?

Doubling up on Wurmple and 'inja might not be the best move, but...

Gah, I'm so glad I'm not doing a bugrun...

I'd take Anorith/Armaldo (Claw Fossil, I think) just to have a rock-type. And for no subversive reasons at all. No, I swear I'm not advertising for Team Anorith! I'm also not trying to make a plug for the Make-A-Gym-Leader thingie (Voting is up for the Hometown Rival, submissions for the Criminal Rival are being accepted!)

Also, I think Heracross is available in Sapphire, but I'm not certain.

UPDATE: Cleared out Pokemon Tower. No change in Moveset. On the way to the Safari Zone for SURF and STRENGTH now.

  • I want to get palkia for my diamond, and the pearl exclusive pokemon, So I'll give it a shot and go through pearl monotype. I'm going to go with bug pokemon. I've never even kept a bug pokemon in my party for very long unless I was evolving it. Might as well try bug pokemon out.

I would start with my FR, but I want to wait until I can trade the pokemon with my diamond before I start a game that I don't want to restart. Same with my sapphire (of course it would help if I didn't give my LG, ruby and emerald to my now ex-friend to "borrow", I'll have to try and get those back, but he probably doesn't even have them anymore).... maybe I could get the games used...

So if we're doing this for all the generations, does that mean we use the same type in every one? Or can we change the type we're using when we start a new gen?

  • Yes, Heracross is there, I'm using it myself. Other good candidates would be Pinsir or the already mentioned Armaldo. I disadvise using Shedinja, its weaknesses are VERY common and even something that can't hit it super-effective can still kill it with Confusion or Poison. Get something useful instead, or leave the slot open for a HM Slave, HMs are a lot more important in Hoenn than before (especially surf, lol)

Alright, since I've got winter break now, I'll try this again. I think I forgot it last time.

I'm starting WATER type, going with Blue - Gold - Emerald - Platinum. (I might change Gold to Crystal if I get the urge. Doesn't really matter, does it?)

    --

Chose Squirtle in Pallet, beat rival, went to Viridian and got Pokédex. So far.

Ahh, I think I'll get a Pinsir or Heracross and Armaldo and leave out Shedinja, never even knew you could get Pinsirs in Hoenn (though I still hate that the Scyther/Scizor family was excluded from this region D:<) Thanks for the help.

    Sapphire Log:

    Chose Mudkip.
    Caught Wurmple.
Started looking for a Surskit on Route 102.
    Wurmple evolved into Cascoon.
    Still no Surskit.
    Cascoon evolved.
    Still no Surskit.

It's Ironic. On normal playthroughs I spend ages looking for Ralts and only find Surskits, now I can only find Ralts' and no Surskits. This could be a long game..

    - Beat Brock on the first try, a couple of Bubble-attacks does it.
    - Fought my way with Squirtle, who evolved into Wartortle, to Mt. Moon.
    - Currently going through Mt. Moon
