Maybe mix both is an idea?

For Silver for example, Water for Feraligatr, and Dark for his personality.
So for Misty, you then get Water as type and Ice for personality.

But then again, you would be stuck on the starters with dual types. So maybe pick the 'main' type of the dual types or the 'less populated' one?
The "main" type is actually our issue right now.

As it stands, the leading types are unsurprisingly:
9 students in Grass
7 students in Fire
8 students in Water

Meanwhile:
2 students in Ice
2 students in Ghost
3 students in Bug
3 students in Dark

We don't want to end up with a player who decides to pick two types in the low-end of the spectrum and have to figure out alternative ways to introduce characters that would otherwise be found in other type classes. On the flipside, a player who decides to pick, say, both Grass and Water would be overwhelmed with new characters.

Logically speaking, going with personality and having a relatively equal distribution of students across all 18 types would be the best. But if it comes down to "flavor" and the representation of a character that stays true to the franchise, there's less sense there.

Hmm, hmm, hmm... Let me hear more opinions!

Well, you could also do something like this if you don't want overpopulation:

Leaf in the manga uses her charm to get her things. So you could give her the classes Water (Blastoise as starter) and Fairy (Because of the charm she uses in the manga)
For Gold, Fire (Typhlosion) and Dark (Pervertedness and gambling. often seen as bad things and thus 'sins' in a way)
For May then fire and fighting because she's pretty violent and fiery.
For Blue, you could pick Ice because of his rude personality as well together with whatever other type. While for Dawn, you could use Psychic (Because she seems to be quite intelligent in the manga.)
For Hilbert and Hilda for example, you could use the affinity with the legendary Pokémon they have. So, Dragon, because they, in game, are the heroes that belong with either Reshiram or Zekrom (Who are the vocal point of the plot basically), and then maybe for one of the two the secondary typing of Thunder. (Because you already have a lot in fire, water, and grass.)
And so on and so on. (Even though that would still leave out Bug and such. Maybe something for Trevor, because he's quite timid. Dunno why I associate bugs with being timid, but oh well.)

Or, you could base the typing on the first Pokémon the trainer's manga counterparts had. (These are differnet from the starters, so there's diversity.)

For Lucas, for example, had Munchlax, which is normal. For Barry, it was Chatot, who is normal/flying.

Just throwing out some ideas. Hope it doesn't annoy you.

Right, that's a little closer to what we're trying to do. Little nods to existing media, but also try to balance everything out for the sake of the game. But we don't want to do it arbitrarily.

We might have to pull up a full list of combinations... so that'd be like, what, 153 of them if I remember my high school math? That's more than enough to cover everyone.

I think with signature pokemon is good but i really wanna be able to have a Latias because my main team line up for pokemon games are Latias (Female), Latios (Male), Quilava (Male), Servine (Female), Lucario (Male) and Victini! You do not know how much trading i need to do to get these guys XD

I meant type combinations. 18 types, select two in any order. Should be 153 combinations.

18!/(2!(18-2)!) = 153.

Whoopee. I got it.

Math. Fun times.

I can offer some ideas but its left field.... but it involves making original characters... but before we get that far... my thought was that, yes, there are some classes that are low spectrum, but thats expected. A lot of people would prefer the cooler classes like fire and electric and things like that... you see it even in normal pokemon battles or scales when you do a mass interview of trainers.... but i figured that gym sessions was going to be mixed with all of the classes in the same room... so even if a solo-class is scarce, the gym will still have those 9+ characters that you feel are missing, so the gym makes up for the lack of interaction. I mean, you certainly did that with Cheren's quest having pretty much only 3 characters to interact almost the whole time.

Another idea is to say, in those lower tiered classes, to have possibly more tasks or adventures for them . Example of a late night field trip for camping to meet the pokemon of the lower tier...example of interacting with bug pokemon at night which gives lovely scenes no other place has in the game...?

Are you asking if it'll be possible to romance Pokemon? I would assume the answer to this question would be "no." I feel like that's a little....taboo. Like, the Pokemon equivalent to bestiality.

Anyways, I was thinking about the whole type preference ordeal, and I think personality might be a better choice in general than the whole "signature pokemon" thing. The reason the imbalance in type choices exists in the first place is because most of the characters receive their starter Pokemon (i.e. their signature Pokemon) from a lab that offers the standard grass-fire-water options to choose from. If the characters in Academy Life aren't going through that process, then they wouldn't have their "signature" Pokemon in this universe to begin with, so it doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

Also, personality gives you plenty of leeway to balance out the typing and will eventually help you to craft your own narratives, so to speak, with the characters. The good in personality-based type preference far outweighs the good of the signature Pokemon type preference.

*unrelated to the topic at hand* It's just as likely (actually probably more likely) that is was Bianca that kissed Ash in Heroes. *unrelated* Just food for thought

And ehhh I still think, even with the transforming thing, Latias is still a Pokemon. I would imagine that would make a lot of people kind of uncomfortable. Plus, writing the story for that could also be pretty awkward. The problem isn't just with the fact that Latias is a Pokemon, but also with the fact that Latias (at least how she is presented in the 5th movie), has a mental capacity and character traits similar to those of a small child. There are multiple forms of taboo there and serious moral lines most people wouldn't want to see crossed. I definitely wouldn't want to be given the task of writing that story arc out.

We also don't even really know yet how Pokemon will factor into the visual novel, so that also throws a wrench into the scenario until we know more.

Yea true, i just still really want latias in there as a character you can do stuff with, not just a pokemon that you have to battle with.

Dude, I just played the demo and it looks very promising. Especially the art looks super good! My compliments. Now I just hope that this project won't drown in its ambition, but if it indeed doesn't this could be HUGE.
