Thought it would be an interesting thread to have. Simply just post about the last album you've listened to and tell us what you thought of said album, doesn't have to be the most recent thing ever, just any gem you recently discovered maybe or whatever

2015 Metal Album #1 of 50: Lumeniferous by HIGH ON FIRE

Overall, very nice album that hits nice grooves and I love the raw feeling. The vocalist also sounds like he drinks a bottle of Jack Daniels everyday, which adds to the sludge metal flavor. Music like this is the reason why pot should be legal. The only downside is you get mesmerized enough that sometimes you stop paying attention for several moments....kind of like what happens when you're actually stoned. I guess that's why they call it stoner metal. But it's pure raw, gravelly psychedelics and that makes it good fun.

2015 Metal Album #2 of 50: Apex Predator by NAPALM DEATH

Napalm Death, famous for writing the shortest recorded song ever (the 1-second long "You Suffer"), bring out a nice grand slam for this album. A stellar example of high quality grindcore mixed with death metal, yet despite the reputations those genres garner, Apex Predator is proof that these genres do indeed bring out a high level of musicianship with plenty of fast crushing riffs that are played with not only pummeling aggression, but also with delicate precision.

    ------------------------------------------------------

2015 Metal Album #3 of 50: Arcturian by ARCTURUS

Spearheaded now by unorthodox black metal singer (yes, SINGER, I swear I'm not making this up) ICS Vortex, Arcturus' album "Arcturian" provides a unique blend of symphonic black metal characteristic of Emperor mixed with Avant-garde metal licks that provide a beautiful tapestry of melodic yet deep riffs mixed with Ministry-esque industrial electronics that will provide an experience for anyone looking for out-of-the-box black metal, especially considering how accessible it can be for those who dislike black metal's stereotypical satanic tirades (not a drop of Satan here as far as I can tell).

    ------------------------------------------------------------

2015 Metal Album #4 of 50: Unholy Savior by BATTLE BEAST

Unholy Savior provides a traditional power metal feel, but what makes it so intriguing and refreshing in a mostly derivative subgenre is primarily the vocals and lyrics. Noora Louhimo heads this Finnish band's third album with gutso, invoking the attitude of Pat Benatar with lyrics demonstrating a winner-take-all spirit. Combined with energizing power chord riffs, fast frenetic drumming, and harmonic synths, Battle Beast bring in a high contender for metal album of the year, with an album full of unforgettable tunes, from Lionheart to Speed And Danger, and even the softer Sea Of Dreams bring in some of the most beautiful power metal I've heard in years.

listening to Don't Wake Me Up by The Microphones right now; it's my first listen to it after hearing pretty much everything else in the Microphones discog that seems interesting. it's pretty solid; more or less exactly what I was expecting, too. lo-fi noise pop weird tape experiment shit. works kinda well for this rain / snowstorm we're having right now.

before this, yesterday, I think the last album I listened to was Lodger by David Bowie, which is obviously the weakest link in the Berlin trilogy but still not bad by any means. and before that it was Tusk by Fleetwood Mac which I have a newfound love for.

I've been listening to Ellie Goulding's Delirium in the car a lot lately. I've also had the Tales of Xillia 2 soundtrack bumpin' too, if that counts. And I just listened to a big chunk of Deftones' Around the Fur.

Haven't listened to a full album in a while but probably most recent is Stereophonic's Keep the Village Alive before I went to see them in concert. I like it a lot, took me a bit of time to get into but for an "older" band there new stuff really isn't bad.

Remain In Light by Talking Heads
On third listen this still sounds as good and fresh as my first. I don't know enough about afrobeat or new wave to say anything meaningful about the music itself but god damn I can't stop nodding my head to the beat

my dude. if you're interested in afrobeat check out Fela Kuti's discog, namely Expensive Shit and Zombie; he pretty much birthed the genre. he's amazing. an incredible badass, too: his entire oeuvre is pretty much a middle finger to the Nigerian government. read up on some of the political shit he did, because it's both hilarious and terrifying. also have you heard Fear of Music? just as good, if not better than, Remain in Light imo.

regardless, last album I listened to in full was Bath by maudlin of the Well, which is my favorite metal album of all time and one of my favorite albums Full Stop of all time. it's bolstered by the fact that it was purportedly mostly conceived while the band was experimenting with lucid dreaming and astral projection, which is both deeply pretentious and immensely satisfying. I'm listening to ★ by David Bowie right now.

The last album I've listen to is All Possible Futures from Miami Horror.

I'll have ti listen to it another time to really tell something about the album. It wasn't bad, definitely. But I can't say I loved it more than Illumination (and that's an album I've listen to a lot in my life).

The last album i listened to front to back was Art Angels by Grimes. It's one of my favorite releases to come out last year, and I recently purchased it on vinyl. It certainly took me a bit to warm up to its atmosphere, but I really love the direction she is going with this album. I feel like it relates back to her early, somewhat gritty and experimental feel, while adding an aspect of bubblegum pop to the mix, widening it out to a larger audience. Really love the songs Kill v Maim, Flesh without Blood, Butterfly, and Realiti. It does give a different aspect to her previous work, but I love it.

    Look Up - MOD SUN

I really enjoyed this album. I enjoy almost every piece of work that MOD SUN has ever released, to be honest. The audiobook, Did I Ever Wake Up? that can be found at the end of the album was a really good listen and was very enjoyable to listen all the way through.

my dude. if you're interested in afrobeat check out Fela Kuti's discog, namely Expensive **** and Zombie; he pretty much birthed the genre. he's amazing. an incredible badass, too: his entire oeuvre is pretty much a middle finger to the Nigerian government. read up on some of the political **** he did, because it's both hilarious and terrifying. also have you heard Fear of Music? just as good, if not better than, Remain in Light imo.

Oh I have listened to Fela Kuti before especially zombie, that's why I know anything about afrobeat lmao. I will read up on him though. No I haven't heard Fear of Music yet, Remain In Light is my first Talking Heads album but hey I've only heard good things about their earlier stuff so I will get to them eventually CCC:

    Malibu by Anderson Paak
Man I have been anticipating for this like a madman and it's just as good if not better than anything I was hoping for. The instrumentals are lush and Paak sounds great, singing or rapping. The features are great here too, esp Rapsody who kills it here just like she did in TPAB. If only this came out in the summer for this is nothing but a perfect summer album but alas

    xx by The xx
The skeletal instrumentation certainly is nice, some of the basslines here could have been explicitly lifted from Unknown Pleasures for all I know lmao. I don't really see much of the r&b influence that's been mentioned so much, I hear a lot more post-punk than anything. The singing is the bit I'm having the most trouble with, I can't make my mind up on whether I like the whole whispering singing thing. I guess it'll take a few more listens eh

I will post two since they're both great and I listened to them in less than a week. And undoubtedly will be two of the greatest albums of the year.

    Megadeth - "Dystopia"
If you're into metal, you have to listen to this. Dave Mustaine seems to have given up trying to reach notes his voice won't let him anymore, and blends it nicely with the D tuned guitars he's been using in the last couple of years while filling the album with a barrage of great riffs. All the instruments are masterfully played; Chris Adler does a great job on the drums and Kiko Loureiro even got a 3-minute showoff instrumental track.

    Dream Theater - "The Astonishing"
2 hours of music divided into two acts. It's a concept album, a story designed by the guitarist John Petrucci. Usually progressive bands such as Dream Theater have long epic 10+ minute songs, but that's not the case here: The longest is about seven minutes, and most of the songs are under 5 minutes length. Personally, I appreciate Dream Theater but it was never a band that hooked me for hours on end. But this album did it. The first time I gave it a full listen, I was indeed astonished. Well done, Dream Theater, well done. I recommend this to anyone, metalhead or not.

I;m not really one for listening to full albums. That being said, the last one i did listen to was Andy Grammar's (I know, that was forever ago it came out) but i do have to say that there wasn't a single song i disliked on it which is about as impossible as it gets when it comes to music with me.

    Hmm okay

I Love You, Honeybear by Father John Misty
Holy shit why did I skip this last year? This has instantly become one of my favourite albums of 2015 no doubt, the production is just so lush and romantic, I love Josh Tillman's songwriting here and after the first three songs I swear I was ready to propose to the next girl I see. It isn't perfect by any means but damn it comes close, check out Chateau Lobby #4 or the title track if you can

This Is Happening by LCD Soundsystem
Been meaning to check them out for a while, and I liked what I heard. Very fun album with some great grooves and they don't seem to be scared at song lengths at all because wow besides Drunk Girls most of these songs go past the six minute mark constantly lmao

The last album I listened to in full was Kingdom of Rust by Doves. Check them out if you're unfamiliar. And if you've seen Zombieland, you should recognise the title song Kingdom of Rust.

honestly hated this album more than a lot of things I heard last year. like, genuinely hated. I don't like Fleet Foxes either so perhaps this was never meant to be, but the lyrics made me cringe so much and it was just so vanilla and so slickly produced and so.... smug. Post-Ironic. eugh. idk. that's just me. romance filtered through a dude with a beard and an internet connection. very gross, imo. but yeah, that's just me. I see why someone'd like it, kinda.

Insignificance by Jim O'Rourke is the last album I listened to. Jim O'Rourke's art pop trilogy is one of the most perfect things in indie music. this is probably my second favorite installment, behind Eureka. it's basically misanthropic sardonic blackly comic lushly produced / orchestrated indie rock with elements taken from a bunch of different genres. it's gorgeous, but very bitter. it's like a safety blanket lined with quills.

I just finished listening to No Love Deep Web by Death Grips. I really loved it, actually. I have always heard little bits and pieces of the album, and it actually might be one of my favorite releases (alongside Exmilitary and The Money Store). No Love has always been probably my favorite Death Grips song to date, and I feel like the rest of the record really encompasses that vibe and spreads it around. Songs like Lil Boy really make the lyrics pop out (IE: "Floods you can't hide" helped me really vision exactly what MC Ride was trying to portray in the lyrics). My favorite songs out of it were No Love, Battle Rass Stars Out The Sky, and Deep Web. I'd give it a 9/10, not really sure why I haven't given it a listen before.
