Thanks for letting me know that I didn't mention the correct Emerald special values. I remember that they're actually different than the FR values. Yep, you got it: 0x116, 0x117.
It sounds like the script events you're using aren't set up properly. Have you watched the tutorial about flags and variables yet? It's titled "History Never Repeats Itself." That should help you set up your script events correctly. Otherwise, if you provide a link to maybe a screenshot of the settings you're using for your script event (such as the var value and var number) then I can take a look.

Yep, vars have to have an ID, no matter what. If you want one to activate always, just give it a number like 0x4011, set the value to 0x0, and never change the value.
