I personally know at least 8 people in my grade 12 class that play pokemon actively (And own me because they know I love dragons and just run like 6 ice types), and I happen to know that many other people besides play as well. So, no, I don't believe that pokemon is a particularly unpopular...

They didn't for FireRed and LeafGreen, so I imagine they won't for heartGold and SoulSilver either.

Actually, I'm breeding a charmander and charizard together at the moment. Since all the charmanders I possess have rather poor IVs, I guess I'll have to just breed some more and hope I get lucky. Thanks for the help.

I've gotta say, I was expecting something VERY different. That said, does anybody know if a parents IV affects the baby's IV if the parent is NOT holding an EV item? I ask because I just bred like 10 Charmanders and they all had similar stats spreads (none very good). Or... am I just very unlucky?

I'm happy to say that I don't have any problems with any pokemon evolutions. This is probably due to the fact that I refuse to acknowledge the existence of a few of them, particularly that HEINOUS lickitongue evolution.
