I know, I've always really wanted to D: I was super thrilled when they were announced, 'cause I loved G/S, but I didn't own a DS at the time, and since then I've just never gotten around to getting them, since there have been so many other Pokemon games I've missed out on D:
I've always really liked Firered, but if I'm gonna be honest, I don't feel like FR/LG were very fulfilling remakes. I mean of course they managed to get the whole remake part of it right, but I felt like they were still lacking in post-game, though I feel like that could be said about most generation 3 games. I guess it's just because of how big the post-game of G/S was and how HG/SS expanded on that (I may not have played the games, but I definitely have seen them :p), so I just felt like FR/LG were kinda mediocre in comparison. That said, I still think they're great games and I still enjoyed them, because hey, Kanto was great :D
But personally, my favourite generation is the second one. It may have been the smallest considering the amount of games it brought to the table, but I always really loved Gold and Silver. Silver is the game I've invested the most time in ever, and I have so many great experiences with that game. And while I really liked the originals as well, the fact that this game brought both a new region and Kanto back was just pure joy. I also felt like this had this soothing feel to it compared to the first generation games, since they appeared much more dark and gloomy. But G/S were filled with joyful music. Heck, even Lavender Town lost the scary touch.
But yeah, while they're definitely not the best games, considering the lacking story (I still think best story goes to R/S/E) and general flaws the old generations had, I always just had a lot of fun with them, and continued playing them well into the release of R/S. Unfortunately, I don't own my copy of silver anymore :(
