For your R4i, I would suggest downloading the latest firmware here:

Just find the one that matches your model. Before putting it on your card, backup all your files from your SD, and use this program to reformat your SD card:
http://panasonic.jp/support/global/cs/sd/download/index.html
then put your backup files on your SD card, extract your firmware files replacing any existing ones, and try using you R4. Use it on your most basic DS and follow the upgrade directions on the first page I linked you to. If it still doesn't work on your DSi, I don't know what will.
