    As you may know or not, the Oculus Rift will be released to the general public this year. Sony, though it hasn't been officially announced, has been rumoured to be creating their own virtual reality headset for the Playstation. And SAO's world is pretty cool. Basically, virtual reality is suddenly being a thing again and 2014 is the year where the first real push for VR is supposed to happen.

    So, what are your thoughts on the future of gaming and virtual reality? Will VR be such a success that having an Oculus Rift headset would become the norm in gaming? Or is all this just a huge gimmick and would grow out of fashion very quickly?
     
    I think it's something that in theory seems cool, but could be incredibly stupid. I've always liked video games because you get to sit down and relax and play them. It just seems that if you did a virtual reality type thing, that it could take away from that. Also, Sony wasn't necessarily the best when it came to the whole 'motion' games, so if they do come out with it, they better make sure it's perfect to make up for it.
     
    I dont think it'll work out on the long terms. Its something like the Move and the Kinect. People will enjoy it, but the "hardcore" gamers will never get into it. Plus its Sony, like River said they arent that great with the motion stuff.

    I dont see myself having such thing though ahah
     
    The Oculus rift is very nice and comfortable, I have had the pleasure of playing TF2 whilst wearing it and boy it could become the norm they might have to slim them down so your wearing steampunk goggles and they need to be customizable, who doesn't want to pimp their VR goggles out. But I don't think it will break into the main stream of gaming with maybe indie developers using it and educational games. Give it a few more years until we become trapped within the game in an vrMMORPG... give it time some idiot will make it happen.

    Ironically I agree with you that it won't work out, but for different reasons. I don't view Kinect and especially Move as mainstream. They are obviously popular and make Microsoft and Song money, but popularity and profit don't necessarily mean they are mainstream. The original Wii is something I would consider mainstream. A lot of hardcore gamers don't play it, but I see a Wii system in almost everyone's house I go to, young and old. It's enjoyed by people of all ages and even people that don't play it are aware of it's existence. I know it's hard to imagine being gamers, but the average person probably has no clue what Kinect or Move is, and I can see them even knowing even less about the Oculus Rift.

    Unlike hardcore gamers, more casual gamers tend to enjoy Wii/Wii U, Move, and especially Kinect. The Oculus Rift on the other hand I see, one because it's not a known brand by the average non-gaming consumer, two it is a new unfamiliar device, and three because of its high price, will be the opposite and only be used by the hardcore gamer. Making products that only appeal to the casual gamer isn't a bad move, but the audience will not be as broad. Making products that only appeal to the hardcore gamer on the other hand seems like it could have a potential for failure.

    ^This sums up what I thought perfectly. I don't think that we will see any major breakthrough with VR gaming for at least 10 years. It's such a hard concept to work with and will take some real mastery to get the majority of gamers to stick with.

    Tbh Move and the Kinect weren't revolutionary. They are stepping stones but tehy are nowhere where VR gaming should be.

    I agree with that and it was Sony and Microsoft's fault that Move and Kinect weren't revolutionary. Kinect was more so because it's controllerless, but both companies were told the idea of motion game and they thought it was a silly gimmick, but Nintendo took advantage of it.
