    Steel Dark

Generation II bought us two brand new types to co-exist with the already then 15 types that existed in Generation I. The introduction of these were to balance out the Psychic and Ghost types who were seemingly broken in the previous generation.

What were your thoughts on these types being introduced? Did you use any of these types in your team? What did you think of the Steel-type specialist, Jasmine? What about the Dark-type specialist, Karen?

  • Steel was an extremely defensive type is great in competitive battles. I didn't use any in my ingame team though.

I did have an umbreon though, it was one of my favorites and it is pretty bulky.

Dark and Steel were also added to balance out the underplayed Fighting type, which seemed to only have been used in the first gen games to counter Normal types.

Additionally, thanks to Steel and the later added Fairy type, Fire is finding more competitive use both Offensively and Defensively (Originally, Fire types were only good for their high attacking stats).

Jasmine and Karen never really stood out much to me, especially considering that Jasmine's gym didn't even have a challenge or gym trainers. I do like the types themselves though, and both types have had some great gym leaders/elite 4s.

  • I feel the addition of these types was a notable step in the right direction, since it not only nerfed those OP Psychic-types, but like another post said having both Dark and Steel being weak to Fighting also helped balance that type out by giving it more reason to be used, since the Fighting-type was not used a lot in 1st Gen due to the Psychic dominance.
