    Casey Holt & Jordan Springs

    Midday • Day 3
    Route 9
Buneary's a blur for the most part, jumping between targets too fast to be caught up in the vines they send after her. She stomps her foot into a Skiddo's face, shoving it down the hill as she propels herself to the next target. This one gets a Pound to each ear and joins its retreating friend. Casey springs to his feet just in time for Buneary blow past him on the last Skiddo, hanging on grimly as it leaps and bounds across the plateau.

He runs after, but quickly loses her again. Jordan's somewhere on the other side of the pushing and shoving herd; Casey can hear him yelling commands. He doesn't know where Charmander is, but he yells "Ember!" at the top of his lungs and is answered by quick bursts of flame. Panicked Skiddo dash past, some of them definitely on fire. Casey plucks Buneary from the back of one such Pokémon, has a short conversation with her, and launches her back into the crowd. He himself heads in as well, redirecting Skiddo toward the edge of the plateau with rough shoves. Their vines catch and pull and he smacks at them frantically. Just keep moving, you're stronger than them, it's fine-!

The herd thins just for a moment and he zeroes in on the trail left by the contents of his backpack before sand swirls across the dusty ground. He pushes forward, still slapping at vines, and is making good headway when something slams into his back. The wind is knocked out of him as scrabbling claws announce the intrusion to be Charmander, clearly kicked into Casey by the irate Skiddo behind him. Charmander uses the vantage point of Casey's shoulder to continue his onslaught of Embers.

"You can't keep that up, you should- ugh!" Casey cuts off his own sentence with a coughing fit as Charmander's attempted exhale of flame manifests as a cloud of black smoke. Eyes and throat stinging, he sinks to his knees ins search of clear air. Hooves thunder past him, owners zig-zagging every which way. Forcing his eyes open, he find himself once again confronted with the trail of his belongings.

    "Charmander, Growl!"

It's loud in his ear, much louder than it had been earlier against Spirit. The things adrenaline can do… The closest Skiddo back away and Charmander bounds ahead, clearing the way; Casey shuffles forward on his knees, scooping up whatever he can find before it's stolen away by another curious goat.

Following and collecting his scattered things brings him back toward a larger cliff face, close to the path he and Jordan had clambered their way through to get up here in the first place. He's no longer surrounded by Skiddo. He glances back and sees the herd starting to disappear from the plateau in bigger waves. Charmander and Buneary are nowhere to be seen. He hasn't heard Jordan in a while either. He's about to start worrying when he turns a corner and is confronted with the original thief, nose-deep in Casey's own backpack.

"Hey!" Casey yells, and throws a random item from the pile he's holding. It hits the Skiddo in the shoulder.

    It's a PokéBall.

Human and Pokémon stare at each other in mutual surprise as the Skiddo turns to light and is sucked away. The PokéBall rattles around a few times before going still.

    Casey blinks.

    "Huh."

    Chapter 3-4
    Resolve

Richard was shaken hearing the declaration made by the hiker. He didn't believe in the fact that showed that they probably didn't have a chance even at the beginning. But suddenly a laugh could be heard next to Richard, Keith was apparently the one who laughed, shocking both of them.

"Why are you laughing, Kid? Does there an issue or something?" The hiker was puzzled at Keith's mannerisms.

Keith wiped the tears on his face due to the laugh, he then took a deep breath in an effort to make himself stop laughing. "Nope, nothing Mister. It's just that… We're kinda used to play the dark horse role, so much that I'm probably not even surprised that we're stuck in this situation now." Keith then kicked the right calf of the shocked Richard to ease off his tension.

"Come on, Pal. This ain't the first time we do this. Back me up, will you?"

Richard reacted with a smile before he immediately laughed just like Keith earlier. "Hahaha, of course… How could I forget… No matter where we were and what we did, for some reasons it always ended up that way." Richard scratched his head feeling embarrassed with the fact. "However…" Richard saw eye-to-eye with the hiker, with his eyes then showed a strong resolve he didn't have before.

"People had called us with all sorts of calling before we stand here... Pushover, leftovers, garbage, and the list goes on." Richard clenched his right fist towards the skies above him.

"And every single time they did it, in the end, we always made them eat their word and this time there won't be any difference. Even if we lose here, we'll make this as our stepping stone to continue forward towards greater heights."

"Took you long enough... Let's go!" Keith wore a wide grin while he squatted, loosening up his neck for one more attempt to beat the powerful hiker.

"Yeah. Sorry Keith, I owe you one."

The hiker was watching intently at the exchange, before showing a huge smile. "Haha, I love the fire in both of your eyes. And that's why this time, I won't be pulling any punches at all. Show me what you both got, Kids!"

"No need to tell us twice. Go, Uri!"

    "I'm counting on you, Bob!"

The two trainers threw their Pokeball towards the battlefield, unleashing what's left on their Pokemon arsenal to combat the hiker and his Rhydon. A tense silence took over, both sides unwilling to budge to gauge each other's intention, however, it didn't last long…

"Rhydon, Dig!"Rhydon burrowed it's way to the ground, preparing to strike one of the two Pokemon. The two youngsters wait patiently for signs of the Horn Pokemon. Soon after, the ground rumbled once more, this time the Rhydon jumped out behind Uri.

    "Hammer Arm!"

    "No you won't, Teleport!"

Rhydon's shining arm was swung downward towards the Psi Pokemon, but Uri's sudden disappearance from its line of sight threw it off guard from what would happen next.

"Nice! Bob, Confusion!" The six heads of the Egg Pokemon emit blue energy from their body, slowing down the descent of the Drill Pokemon, making the Rhydon an easy target for Uri who had waited behind it.

"Now, Ice Beam!" A blue orb formed between the hand of the Psi Pokemon, the blue orb unleashed a blue lightning bolt that damaged and frozen the left leg of Rhydon.

"Bob, Barrage!" The Exeggcute heads launched itself towards the frozen leg, putting extra pressure on it, shattering the ice while also felling down the Rhydon back first to the ground.

"Papa! Rhydon is in trouble, we should do something." Mary panicked seeing the Pokemon that grew up with her all her life troubled, but her speech was stopped by her father. He patted her head while still smiling even after Rhydon had been felled by Uri and Bob.

"Don't worry, Honey. Rhydon is far more powerful than that… Stand up, Rhydon!"

Although with visible difficulties, Rhydon managed to slowly rise from the ground, roaring ferociously as it finally stood up again.

"Dang, what a tough Pokemon…" Keith grimaced at the sight of tenacity the Drill Pokemon showed.

"Rhydon, let's do this once more, Dig!"

"If a trick didn't work the first time… There must be something he's going to do… Keep your eyes open, Uri!" Richard suspected some plan must be going on in the Hiker's mind, he had to be careful since the species of Abra is not known for their bulky defense. With that in mind, he carefully observed the shaking of the ground for any signs of the Rhydon. Not long after the ground shook and Rhydon leaped out from the underground, popping up just behind Uri.

"Same tactics!? Teleport!" Richard was surprised at the choice the hiker made, he thought that it was some kind of tactic to throw off his concentration.

"Richard, no!" Keith realized that Richard was falling into the ploy the Hiker had set to lull him into a false sense of security.

    "Too Late, Rock Blast!"

A giant rock materialized on the palm of Rhydon's right hand, the Drill Pokemon rotated his body 180 degrees to the right before he threw the stone as hard as possible. The missile-like speed of the rock caught Uri who teleported behind the Rhydon off guard, the impact caused Uri to crash hard to a cliff wall.

"Uri! Damn… I was careless…" Richard could only lament at his decision, he didn't calculate all the risk correctly and instead caused the victory to slip even further from his grasp.

"Want to call it a day? I think the Exeggcute over that couldn't beat Rhydon alone… So, how about it?" It was apparent that the hiker was feeling happy about how Keith and Richard's resolve managed to carry them that far, however, he also didn't want to wipe te floor unceremoniously.

"No, thanks for your offer Mister, but I'm sure our Pokemon would choose to fight if they were given the choice, and so we'll fight until the end. Even if only Bob can fight right now." Richard smiled, he believed that if Uri was still standing, that he would pick the same choice. However, the dialogue was interrupted by the said Pokemon, teleporting in front of Richard.

"Uri… Hahaha, let's fight until we drop then. I'm counting on you, Bud!"

Just as Uri nodded, his entire body shone in a bright white color. Blinding Richard who was standing behind him, blocked most of the light with his right arm, but he still able to see a strange thing happening to Uri in front of his eyes.

    "Uri… It can't be!"

    Arianne Chandler - Route 9 - Day 3 - May 22nd

♫ - Bon Jovi - Keep the Faith
Squirtle, finally out of his Pokéball once again, held on to Arianne's backpack and bounced up and down with every step. His trainer, apparently, not only needed some company while adventuring through Route 9, but also some healing from whatever happened during the morning. Therefore, his eyes were faintly glowing pink, giving Arianne the energy to keep going… or giving her a new excuse to keep bashing her head against a wall! Depends.

The girl was accurately following the main path with a rather fast and steady pace. Of course, she'd swapped her miniskirt back with her (previously soaked) trousers in Cerulean, and she'd also put on her new gloves - not for any specific reason other than wanting to try them out. Pretending not to notice all the other trainers on the path didn't even seem necessary: most of them were already minding their own business, which meant less battles for Arianne and less time to reach her destination.

Rocky Tunnel, in all honesty, was a place Arianne would have avoided without thinking twice. But not only it was right in the way of the path Professor Palm had suggested… no, there were many other caves to explore during this journey, like Mount Moon. And of course Arianne was afraid of caves. So cold, wet, cramped, and dark. So many Pokémon hiding at every corner. But no easy way out, unless you go all the way back to the entrance. When swimming, the entire sea was at Arianne's reach, but when caving, the cold and hard rock limited all of her movements.

Her train of thought was interrupted by a rather grave voice coming from somewhere above the path. "Squirtle girl, please wait!" A man called her from a grassy slope on the left side of the paved road, Pokéball in hand and everything. At first Arianne pretended not to notice, thinking it was just another trainer eager to slow her down with a pointless battle, but the hiker eventually caught up with her. "Please, just do me a favor, it'll be quick."

What looked like a burly man in his fourties jumped down from one last ledge into the twisty main route, right before Arianne's face, getting nothing but a perplexed look from the girl. He sounded and acted quite desperate, as if he had just been coming back from a difficult hike. In fact, he was quite well equipped for such tasks… he just didn't look that athletic, that's all.

"I've caught this Pokémon just now as a gift, and I want to have him experience some battling against another trainer… and see how it does." he said between breaths, while calling out his new recruit. From the… Premier Ball he was holding (yes, a Premier Ball! He was committed to his task) came out a tiny, playful, Riolu.

That really was a rare Pokémon! Arianne had no idea that it could be found in the area - no, actually she'd never seen one in person. Plus, its attitude was one more reason to stay a while. Alright, how long can a battle be? The road is very long anyways, so I should be able to afford a small break. This will give me time to rest my legs, too... sort of. Arianne thought, as she and the hiker walked away from the path into a wider area. Riolu looked very eager to fight and prove itself, just like Squirtle when Arianne met him for the first time.

Of course, the hiker wanted to know more about Squirtle, about why he was perched on the backpack, but also about how the journey was going. Arianne didn't talk much with the man though, replying to his questions quite telegraphically - but smiling with sparkling eyes when Squirtle was being brought up. She kept quiet about the whole "masked trainer" affair, though.

Speaking of which… since the Water type was helping out her trainer with Heal Pulse, the girl decided to let her second strongest member battle. Out of the Pokéball, therefore, came Pineco, who soon found herself in the grip of Arianne's arms.
"Alright, I accept you and Riolu's challenge!"

As usual, Arianne threw Pineco in the middle of the battlefield - maybe this time not with that much power, given her condition. Riolu easily dodged the Bug Type though, thanks to its agility, and retaliated with Quick Attack. Now, the strangest part was that the hiker wasn't giving any command to his Pokémon: he was just observing the battle happening in front of him. Maybe he trusted Riolu's judgment, or maybe he didn't know what to do in a battle like that one.

Pineco's sluggish speed meant she had to take a passive approach. But, seeing how Riolu only knew physical attacks, all she had to do was wait for it to get closer and strike back at the right moment. The two Pokémon exchanged some attacks this way, with Pineco using Protect successfully once… but when she tried to do that again, the green-ish shield shattered under the onslaught of Riolu. The Bug Type was hit with a perfectly executed Feint!
Interesting… so Protect can be broken?

The knockback from Faint allowed Riolu to hit a follow up Metal Claw on the startled Pineco, who eventually made it back to Arianne's grasp. "It's fine, we can continue if you want!" she declared, throwing once again Pineco towards the Riolu. This time the Bug Type landed a good hit on the opponent by bouncing off the grassy terrain and using Tackle. She then followed with a Bug Bite, which… didn't seem to even phaze the Riolu.

Only a red spark in the Fighting type's eyes hinted at the fact it had just used another trick up its sleeve, Endure. Which meant, using Self Destruct was absolutely out of question. Becoming useless until the next visit to a Pokémon Center, without the certainty Riolu would have been defeated? Arianne had to make sure it didn't happen this time.

As the two Pokémon traded another few blows, though, the girl couldn't help but think about how late she was. In her plans, she had to get as close as she could to Rock Tunnel: this way, no matter how clumsily she would have traversed that dreadful cave, she would be able to reach Lavender Town soon enough and find a room to sleep in… comfortably.

It was then she noticed… "STOP!"

Pineco, foreshadowing a new attack from Riolu, was getting ready to use Self-Destruct, and given that her trainer wasn't telling her to do anything in particular, she thought she had the green light. The attack didn't go off, though. The Bug Type stopped in time and took the attack from Riolu, then, like she had done before, hit her opponent with one last Tackle.

"I hope it's enough." remarked Arianne, taking a look at the hiker with a smile on her face.
"Yes, it was a great battle! This Riolu will be perfect for my son… wait, I didn't get your name." he said, returning Riolu and coming closer to the girl. "Arianne, from Cape College. And you?" "Martin." The man replied. "So… Arianne, there are many rare Pokémon like this Riolu uphill, you should go there… if you have time. But since it seems you're in a hurry…" he took a breath. "Thanks for your battle, on behalf of my son!"

Now, this was what Arianne did not know she'd need, but that she really did need: a good friendly battle! The aftermath of her previous encounter with the masked girl was something she still had to get over with… but that doesn't make all battles inherently bad and worth running from! Yet, as simple as that concept is, sometimes you need a little help to put it into practice. That is, the enthusiastic and playful Riolu she had just met.

Martin greeted Arianne as he returned to the main path and headed towards Cerulean. But, as her eyes followed him into the distance, they spotted something else worth focusing on… a girl with purple hair.

    Afternoon, Route 9

The sudden uproar caused by the two kids woke up Artemis once more, and after angrily biting Bruno's cheek, she went back to hide inside his hood. However, since she wouldn't be able to sleep with her trainer running down a slope, she limited herself to stand there with her arms crossed.

Katherine abruptly stopped and Bruno crashed against her. They were now between two different paths, but Muffin didn't seem to be nearby. However, Katherine could hear the Psychic type bouncing from far away and desperately ran behind it with Bruno following her.

Bruno, Katherine and Bumblebee stopped in front of a weird rock, it was smaller than most of the rocks around there and it also had a hole in it. "A burrow". Bumblebee looked at both kids with teary eyes and its ears down.

"Are you saying she's inside?" the girl asked.

The Psychic type nodded. It looked terrified, which confirmed both kids suspicions of wild Pokémon being inside.

The burrow was too small even for Bumblebee to enter. They needed a small Pokémon to rescue Muffin and retrieve the pearl. Artemis could fit there just right, actually. Bruno called her, but she didn't respond. "She's probably angry at me for waking her up". He moved his hand and reached his hood, but he didn't feel anything.

"She's not there!" the girl remarked.

"She fell?" Bruno looked back, hoping that his Pokémon was behind him. He saw a flock of Spearow swirling around the slope they just passed through, and in the middle of the road, what looke like the Grass type standing there, unaware of the fact that she was going to be attacked soon.

"What do I do now?" he thought, as he suddenly started to breath heavily.

"Bruno…" Katherine called. Bruno heard she said something else, but he didn't understand a thing.

To save Muffin they needed Artemis, but they had to save Artemis before. Gospel could take care of the Spearow with one Hyper Voice or two, but that would hurt Artemis too and being between a tall boulders made the wind too much of a threat for him. This was one of those situations in which he had to make a fast decision, but situations like this didn't let him think about one. Totally ironic.

"Bruno! Are you listening?" she was holding two Pokéballs in her hands.

    The boy snapped. "N-no. Sorry."

"I have a plan… it's a little dangerous, but… Al, Thea!" the white lights flashed. What Bruno saw were not the Jigglypuff, or Marill he expected from her, not even a single Ground or Grass type which he related to her for some reason, in fact the Pokémon were…

    "Koffing!"

"Al will try distract the Pokémon inside with his Clear Smog, and…"

    "Croagunk!"

"Thea will Dig her way inside the burrow."

    "Are you sure about this?"

"Yes… kind of. It'll give you time to get here once you rescue your Pokémon and help with the rescue… hopefully."

Her way of explaining things wasn't tranquilizing… at all, but that was the most reasonable plan any of them could think of.

The boy went to the rescue but was stopped by Bumblebee who had this look of determination in its eyes.

"Move!" the Pokémon only answered by hoping ferociously. "What is it now?"

Bumblebee started moving its arms, oinking, bouncing and pointing at the Spearow flock, Bruno and itself, all at the same time. Bruno couldn't understand a thing of what it was trying to say.

"Calm down." he said. The Spoink stopped and only pointed at itself. "You…?"

The Pokémon nodded, and did as if it was bouncing to the Spearow flock and then returned. "Go… there…? You want to go there?"

It nodded again and pointed at Bruno this time. "With me?" another nod and it now pointed its arm at his belt. "Pokéballs…? You want to be part of my team?"

Bumblebee bounced happily. Bruno really didn't have any interest in Spoink as a Pokémon, but he really needed a hand at the moment and Bumblebee seemed to really like him for some reason.

The boy took out a Pokéball and the Psychic type jumped at it. The Pokéball shook a few times until it was firmly shut. Bruno took his recently recruited teammate out and continued his way to rescue Artemis, who was defending herself from the Spearow without much success.

      [tab=3-3]3-3: Parsley & Sage[/tab] ● [tab=dex4]Pokédex[/tab]

    3-3: Parsley & Sage // May 22nd; Midday

"They kinda look like topiary plants."

    "What're those?"

"Y'know… my mom used to make them all the time, cut plants into cute little shapes. I must have shown you some before, she and my sister keep sending me pictures of their new creations." Jordan shrugged and took a swig of water from his bottle. The boys had more or less recovered from their… interesting experience, and were watching their new Pokemon prance around and play with each other.

"Oh, yeah. I guess they do." Casey's Skiddo, he noted, liked to be chased. It hadn't stopped moving since he'd let it out. "So what, you gonna name yours after some bush?"

"Just an observation. But not a bad idea," Jordan pondered for a moment. He quietly racked his brain for names until Casey broke the silence again.

"What d'you call Tangela? Maybe they could match."

"Huh? Oh, heh," He glanced over at Tangela, making sure she was out of earshot. "Okay, so I actually did name her, but she hates it, so I don't usually call her that. When I first got her from the professor, I video called my family, right? And my brother Jon kept laughing and making jokes about how she looked like a bad wig, so we ended up calling her 'Tangles', and it kinda stuck."

Casey sucked a breath through his teeth. "Yeah, not a great one."

"Nope, I can see why she doesn't like it. But these guys…" Jordan's Skiddo trotted back to him, dropping a small rock in his lap. "I don't… thank you?" He quizzically pocketed the smooth stone, and she looked at him proudly. He ran his fingers through her coat, inspecting the leafy green mane growing around her neck. "Sage…" he murmured to himself quietly.

    "Huh?"

"Looks like sage leaves, these," he said a bit louder. "That's kind of a cute name. Sage. What do you think?"

Casey shrugged. "It's pretty cute, yeah."

Jordan looked up from his Pokemon. "I wasn't asking you, but thanks for your input," The Skiddo nudged his hand, and he kept petting her. Casey stuck his tongue out. His own Skiddo bounded over, wondering what on earth his playmate could possibly think was more important than playing.

"Well, it's settled then! Welcome to the team, Sage."

Casey's Skiddo snuffled in his ear. Gross. "Do you want a nickname, too?"

"What would you call me, sweetie?"

    "Oh, shut up."

Jordan grinned. "If we want to be all cute and match-y, maybeee…" he thought for a moment. "He can be Parsley. Y'know, Parsley and Sage."

Casey considered the idea. He also briefly considered the tongue in his ear before turning the Skiddo's face away from his own. "You could be a Parsley, I guess."

Parsley gave him a gentle headbutt in return for the name. Fair enough. "Parsley and Sage!" Casey flashed a mischievous grin before adding: "Very cute indeed, my dear."

Jordan put his arm around Casey. "And now that we've named our children-" he gestured towards the scattered supplies around them with his free hand. "Let's see what we can salvage from the damage they've done."

Casey whined and he flopped himself over Jordan's lap. "There's so much."

Jordan sighed and shot the mischievous pair of Skiddo a dirty look, but they were already off playing again and did not even notice their trainers lamenting over the mess they helped cause. "Yep. I can't believe we ended up catching the little bastards. Anyway!" He stood up, disregarding Casey's yelp at being unceremoniously dropped to the ground. He picked up Casey's nearly empty bag and tossed it at him, then walked over to where his own backpack lay. "Chop, chop. Pick up your things."

With the help of the more responsible Pokemon, they made relatively light work of the ordeal. Tangela's many appendages, as it turns out, were very useful for this task, and she quickly dropped all the supplies she could find near Jordan, who was able to just stay put and reorganize his bag with Hop. Spirit pitched in as well, but he was often distracted by and stopped to inspect fallen branches and sticks that he felt were worthy of being his next weapon, and Sage… well, she eventually got the message that this wasn't a game to scatter supplies further as soon as Tangela brought them back in, and that was all Jordan could hope for with her.

Casey had a bit more to do, despite Charmander's energetic fetching. Buneary had only brought him rocks when he told her to help, so he'd given up on that fairly quickly. Parsley was playing a game of his own; he ran away as Charmander went to retrieve an item and chased him back on the return trip. At least he was occupied.

"Do you think I should give Charmander and Buneary nicknames, too?"

Jordan tapped a few buttons on his Poke Gear to make sure it was still working before sliding it back into the front pocket of his bag. "I mean, yeah, certainly wouldn't hurt your relationship with them…" his voice trailed off as he glanced at "Tangles", and shrugged. "For the most part, anyway. Just choose 'em wisely and don't take bad advice from your asshole brother."

"No worries on that front! Don't think Aurelia's nicknamed a Pokémon once in her whole life." Casey put a few more things in his bag, reconsidered, and pulled one of them back out. Yeah, that was just a rock. He tossed it aside. "I don't have any ideas for 'em, though. It seems too on-the-nose to call Charmander…Inferno or something."

"Ooh, edgy," Jordan remarked. He watched Charmander scurry around the plateau with Parsley on his heels. "Yeah, I'm not sure that suits the little guy."

"But I can't name him something cutesy and have him grow up to be a big intimidating Charizard, can I?" Something occurred to him. "Hey- what's that hot sauce? Pepper… somethin'. Pepper Bomb! Yeah, Pepper Bomb."

Jordan scrunched up his face. "So, what, you're gonna call him 'Pepper Bomb'?"

"Yeah! Pepper for short! Hey, what do you think of that?" he asked, accepting the retrieved multitool and picking up his Pokémon. Charmander made an inquiring noise. "I'm gonna call you Pepper Bomb! Is that okay?"

Charmander clapped his hands gleefully. Casey grinned.

"Cute. Now you have a little condiment collection going on." Jordan quipped. He nodded towards Buneary, who was using Casey's jacket as a chaise. "What about that one? Cumin? Salty?"

Buneary cracked one eye open and levelled an icy stare in Jordan's direction. He quickly looked back down and fiddled with the straps of his bag.

"I dunno! Maybe… Rosemary? Fennel? Juniper?" Buneary made a dismissive noise at each suggestion. "Okay, I'll think of more later."

Casey surveyed the plateau. Nothing but rocks, as far as he can tell. "I think we got everything! Let's go!"

Jordan jumped to his feet. Hop was "nesting" on top of Tangela's head, and Sage was giving Spirit another ride around the plateau. He picked up his bag and motioned for them to come over. "Alright! We're all set. Got the map?"

"Yeah, here-" Casey dug it out of his backpack and tossed it over. He returned Buneary to her PokéBall in order to retrieve his jacket without issue, and brought Pepper and Parsley back a moment later. "Where's it say the campsites are?"

Jordan fumbled with the crumpled map for a few moments. "Mhmm, mhmm… if that sign was over there and we passed this area on the way up…" He finally glanced back up at Casey and dropped the 'I-definitely-know-where-we-are' act. "...I think we're hopelessly lost."

"Well! Time to use our natural instincts, then!" Casey sauntered over to the edge of the plateau and gestured vaguely. "All the trails are probably down from here. So, down we go!"

He sat himself on the edge and tested the slope first with his walking stick, then with the toe of his boot. "We can probably slide down this!"

"Yeah, that's funny," Jordan said dismissively, peering down the slope. "If that's your first instinct, I don't know how you made it to age fifteen. Now, unless we both have a death wish, I think the only way down would be where we came."

Casey pushed himself back up and grumbled at his friend, but set off in the safer direction anyway. After returning Tangela and Hop, and failing to retrieve Sage, who kept kicking her Poke Ball away with Spirit still on her back, Jordan gave up and decided they can tag along on the trip back down.

They angled mostly northeast until they came across a wide but shallow stream. Casey insisted they follow it- water runs downhill, after all, and the breeze across flowing water was nice and cool. The Skiddo, as it turns out, was a much better climber than the boys were, and she made her way down the shifting slopes with ease. Jordan pocketed Spirit's club so he could hold on tightly.

"Hey, you two, wait up!" Jordan called after his Pokemon. "I swear, Casey, catching them was a bad id- woah, look at that!"

The stream dropped abruptly just ahead of them. Spray from the waterfall misted their faces as they peered over the ledge to see a sparkling rocky pool beneath. Lush plants sprawled across the valley floor, sheltered from the elements as they were. The stream wound its way through the vegetation and disappeared around a sharp curve some hundred yards ahead.

"Oh, we're going down there for sure," Casey breathed. He slid his walking stick into its holster and launched into action before Jordan could stop him. A few scraggly trees offered handholds to help clamber down the wet, craggy boulders, but the exercise still ended up being more of a controlled slide than a climb.

"Yes, but I'm sure there's a better way… oh man, it's 'let's slide down the plateau' all over again," Jordan mumbled to himself as he gingerly followed suit. He was much more selective in the footholds and handles he chose to help himself down, so it took him a bit longer than Casey, but he ultimately ended up less wet. In the corner of his vision, he could see Sage bound down on some rocks, but they were slippery enough that both she and Spirit ended up falling into mud. "Well, good thing there's a pool down here, at least." Jordan sighed. Specks of mud flew in his direction, as Sage tried to shake the sludge off.

"Oh, hi! I didn't think anyone else was here. Are we close to a trail?"

"What are you-" Jordan wiped some mud off his brow and turned around to look at Casey, but two more faces stared back at him. "Ah. Hello." He turned bright red. Across from him and Casey were two other teenagers who were clearly in the middle of… something. The entwined girls looked a few years older than them, perhaps eighteen or nineteen. One of them had an athletic build with short blonde hair tied up in a ponytail, while her partner had brown curls cascading down her back and looked like she regularly took her parents' credit card shopping.

Neither of them seemed very happy to be interrupted by two scruffy kids and some muddy Pokémon.

    Chapter 3-5
    Power Of The Evolution

The bright light emitted from Uri's body still shone brightly, however, the shape of the light changing little by little. When the light subsided, it was apparent what just happened in front of Richard's eyes, Uri had just evolved into Kadabra.

"Dang, it's we'll have to finish this battle much quicker than expected. Rhydon, Rock Blast!"

This time instead of conjuring one rock, Rhydon roared and conjured shards of rock, it then turned sharper and started to travel at the newly evolved Uri at a very high speed.

    "Uri, Teleport!"

Uri who understood why he was told to use Teleport decided to dodge the rocks by levitating at high speed instead, the speed of Uri was enough to dodge all of the shrapnel launched by the Drill Pokemon.

"Rhydon, fall back!" The hiker tried to lure the speeding Kadabra towards Rhydon so Rhydon could use a physical attack against Uri.

    "Not today, Confusion!"

As the Drill Pokemon retreated, Uri shot out his psychic energy stopping the Rhydon's right leg in place, it tripped the Rhydon who was trying to bait the Kadabra. The tables have turned, the trap that was almost laid instead prove to be a bad move that turned Rhydon in a prone position instead.

    "Keith!"

    "On it! Bob, Seed Bomb!"

Keith's final Pokemon conjured multiple egg-shaped projectiles, it was then launched toward the right leg of the prone Rhydon. The egg exploded upon impact, worsening the injury the Rhydon already had in its right leg.

The hiker started to grow more nervous as Rhydon was started to walk with a limp. "Rhydon, Dig!"

Rhydon immediately burrowed itself once more to the ground in order to disengage itself from Bob and Uri.

"Guerrilla tactics are not going to cut it anytime soon, mister!" Keith tried to goad the hiker to make a frontal attack.

"Let's see about that, Kids." The hiker patiently waited until it was the right time to strike.

The battlefield was now silent, Bob and Uri trying to stand still to avoid the detection of the Rhydon who was waiting for their misstep from the soil beneath them. Even if the battlefield was filled with silence, both sides couldn't hide their anxiousness about what will happen next.

"This is not going so well… But if the Rhydon wants to wait until there is a perfect sign to strike, then…"

"Uri, throw your spoon away! Kinesis!"

Uri threw his spoon away. The spoon immediately bent at a quick pace, producing a loud noise with it. The loud noise produced alerted the Rhydon who popped out from a hole nearby the spoon.

    "As expected, Ice Beam!"

A light blue orb materialized in between Uri's hands, the orb fired blue lightning towards the Rhydon's right leg. This time, Rhydon could barely even stand after getting hit once more in his already injured leg.

    "Finish it off, Keith!"

"You don't have to tell me twice. Bob, Seed Bomb!"

Bob fired his exploding projectile once more, felling the Rhydon who was trying to crawl into safety. Rhydon tried to come back up, but its right leg was in no condition to stand anymore. And with it, the hiker finally sighed.

"I forfeit, you did a great job, Kids…" The hiker was disappointed with the result, but he smiled seeing the two kids managed to show their tenacity and effort until the end.

"So, we won!? Yay!" Keith was frantically celebrating his victory with Richard who just went along while smiling.

However, the celebration was cut short by Mary. She started sobbing when she saw that her father just lost to Richard and Keith.

"Stop crying honey, it's not a big deal." The hiker tried to console his crying daughter.

    "But… But…*Sob*..."

Seeing this, Richard immediately came close to the girl. He crouched to match his height with Mary and immediately leaned his body slightly forward in an attentive position to talk with her in a soft voice. "Mary, your father is a great trainer. If it wasn't a handicap situation, I and Keith would definitely lose."

Mary listened intently but she was silent at Richard's statement.

"You want to be a trainer one day, no? Do you want to be a champion one day?"

Mary slightly nodded while wiping her tears flowing from her eyes with her arms.

"Me too, that's why I and that brother over there are going for an adventure. If one day you decided to go on a journey with your Wingull, maybe we could do some battle someday. And maybe if that time comes, I and you have already become great trainers. But, to reach that you have to train hard with your Wingull."

Mary started to stop crying. "Then, if I work hard. Will you battle me again?"

"Mmhmm, I promise." Richard put out his right pinkie.

"Okay then, one day I will become the Kanto Champion." Mary linked her pinky with Richard's, making a promise between both of them.

"Sure, I can't wait when that day comes." Richard smiled widely, sincerely waiting for Mary to be strong enough to fight him.

"Well, I'm glad everything ends well." The hiker was very happy with how everything turned up.

"Me too, Mister. Well, I actually have a question. I have a map here." Keith brought out his map of the route. "How far is it to the Rock Tunnel Entrance?"

"It's still kind of far… Surely you don't attempt to reach it in one day? Hahaha." The hiker laughed.

"Uh… We actually intend to do that." Keith awkwardly told the true plans of both him and Richard to the hiker. The respond he get from the hiker turned his voice rather meek, he now had a bad feeling with where the conversation was going.

The hiker stopped his laugh. "Oh… Uh, I would advise against that. If you go now, you'll probably arrive near midnight, so yeah…"

Both Keith and Richard who heard of this suddenly grew silent, the fact that they had to walk with minimum light was a very bad idea. But, it's not like they have any choice. With that, they decided to quickly part ways with Mary and her father.

"Please don't forget your promise!" Mary shouted from a distance.

"Don't worry, I won't." Richard waved back at Mary.

"You have your way with Kids, ey?" Keith tried to crack a joke even if he didn't understand too much about idioms.

Keith's reckless usage of words made Richard drop his jaw in disbelief. "Sorry Keith, but do you have any idea about what you just said?"

"Whoa, what's with the expression Richard? To be honest I'm just guessing here and there… Uh, could you tell me what's the meaning of the sentence I said earlier?"

Richard took a deep breath while shaking his head. After he felt it was inevitable that Keith would learn about it one day, he finally whispered about the meaning of what Keith just said, it left the initial speaker with disbelief.

"Whoa, whoa, whoa… I didn't mean to say that. You know I wouldn't say that if I knew the meaning, right?" Keith panicked and started convincing Richard frantically that he didn't mean that.

"Whatever, just keep your hands off of me, you creep." Richard raised both of his hands while giggling uncontrollably.

And with that, Richard and Keith both continued their walk towards the end of the route.

Route 9, Wednesday May 22nd, afternoon

    You are Ralph.

It's getting way too late already. But after experiencing an unevenly matched battle with a big dragon, a snarky girl's comments, philosophy about life, evolution and everything, and eventually a healthy practice battle with someone you guess you have to call a friend at this point even though he ditched you afterwards, you don't really feel like it's your fault time dragged on like this. Okay, maybe the bit in the middle about thinking a lot about evolution and such. Sometimes, thinking is necessary though. But, everything in moderation.

The amount of rocks on Route 9 were not placed in moderation. Whomever created this place, be it a pokémon, a god or just pure chance, had an unhealthy fascination for rocks and dry earth. You walk the road staunchly, as much as it can be called a road and not just the path of least resistance among the cliffs and hills. Most vegetation is getting scarce, and you haven't even gotten far from the town yet.

There is at least someone who enjoys this kind of environment to his fullest. Sandsy is hopping along next to you, thriving on the exciting landscape. You allow him this joy, as there is no point in not letting him, and also he does help you find your way sometimes when it looks too tricky to keep going straight ahead.

You still make a mental note to complain loudly and annoyingly to Palm later, for his choice of route.

You've been considering keeping Edgy outside of his pokéball too, mostly because you hope that he really is close to evolution already. But constantly watching him in anticipation might give away that you don't actually think he's 'good enough as he is' which might undermine his self-esteem again like before. Besides, he is much, much lighter to carry in energy form inside of a pokéball than in his solid form. And this path is annoying enough as it is already. Grr, Palm.

Lost in thoughts and not at all anchored in reality, you're bound to make a mistake eventually. It happens sooner rather than later. Not seeing or hearing Sandsy's squeaks urging you to stop and step around the obstacle, your foot suddenly finds no ground beneath itself. Dropping down, you don't have time to swear in your mind nor in uttered words.

Thankfully, your physical reflexes are actually working, perhaps because you're worked up and alert from the ascending promenade already. As your astray foot finally connects with ground in the small hole you've trampled into and your body falls forward, unbalanced, you curl up, put your arms above your head for protection, and impact the ground in a rolling fashion.

When it is all over, you're sitting on the ground safely with not much more than dust in your dreadlocks and a bruise on your ankle which will likely make for a majestic blue mark soon enough, but probably won't hinder you from walking onwards.

    Thanks, dojo lessons.

A clapping noise can be heard from above. You twist your head around as you simultaneously scramble to your feet. It is a person, a trainer most likely, since there is a pokémon next to him. His hair is long and golden, and his smile extremely wide, while his eyes are narrow in their smile. Is he wearing a cape?

"Fancy meeting two Sandshrew out here!" the guy says, and his voice sounds like it would sing if anybody even as much as hinted at requesting it.

You look around you. Two Sandshrew? But Coldy is in her pokéball now. Only Sandsy is sitting on a rock nearby.

"Jokes are lost on you, I see," the other trainer sighs, before he jumps down from the ledge where he is standing.

The fall is way too high to be safe for a jump like that. You don't react to the strangeness of it until he lands, and looks completely fine. Grin and all. Then you notice.

The pokémon next to him was a Jigglypuff. He had been holding on to one of its legs as he jumped, and the pokémon with its special ability to blow itself up like a balloon, had done just that. Effectively slowing the fall.

Clever, you think. Who is this guy, then? He's piqued your interest.

"Bye, then," he says, and walks straight past you.

"Hold up," you say, and reach out for his arm.

Bad idea, apparently. Jigglypuff bounces up into your face, inhaling again to maximize its size as it goes, and gives you a Pound on the cheek.

Man, that blob could pack a punch. You're no stranger to scruffs in the schoolyard though, and your physical reflexes are, as established earlier, quite alright. Instead of flinching, you pull your arms up and grab hold of the pink pokémon before it can sink back down. It is lighter than you had thought. You quickly raise it above your head, ready to toss it in some godforsaken direction, powered by anger that grows as the pain in your cheek intensifies-

"No, no," the other trainer says and puts his arms around yours and the Jigglypuff, before you can follow through with the impulse action.

You blink. He is standing very close. Jigglypuff is deflating above your head, and his face becomes visible below it. His expression is hard to read - a mix of surprise, bemusement, and irritation?

"You, sit," he tells his pokémon as he pulls it away from you (and finally takes a step away from you instead of standing inches apart) and sets it down onto the ground. "And you," he continues, pointing a long, straight finger at your nose. But he takes a second or three before he speaks again.

"I like your spunk," he says.

"I don't like your Jigglypuff," you quip back.

He just laughs. "That's ok, he doesn't seem to like you either."

There is something really strange about this person, this whole exchange, you feel. The two of you are saying things, but no information really gets shared. And you don't seem to be able to anticipate him at all. Aren't you usually pretty good at reading people?

"I hope you won't hold it against me though," he now says, and you expect him to wink like Aberdeen usually does. But he just flashes you another very wide grin that looks nothing like Aberdeen's genuine smile, and turns again to walk away, calling the pink pokémon back to him as he does. It takes one last seething look at you before it scurries off after the man.

    Nothing else gets said.

Apparently, you keep staring after the long, blonde hair for too long, because Sandsy is there to tug at your pants. You shake your head, and try to get some dust off your clothes and hair, before you continue the way you were going before. This time, with careful attention to Sandsy and the ground in front of you.

It is when you climb a ledge near some vegetation - because Sandsy considered it a worthy shortcut - that you sense a presence as you stand up straight.

    "Ari?"

      [tab=3-4]3-4: Double Date[/tab] ● [tab=dex4]Pokédex[/tab]

    3-4: Double Date // May 22nd; Midday

"This," the curly-haired one began, haughtiness radiating from every word, "is absolutely unacceptable." She untangled herself from her girlfriend's limbs to stand and begin to put herself in order, straightening rumpled clothes and combing fingers through mussed hair.

"Babe, wait," The blonde girl stood as well, but as her girlfriend started picking up her things and putting them back in her designer purse, she turned her attention to the boys. "Well, I hope you're happy," she snapped. She looked at the Pokemon stomping in mud behind them and started to piece the scenario together. "New trainers, huh? Which school are you from?"

"We went to Cape!" Casey volunteered cheerfully. Jordan's face was still beet-red.

A wicked grin spread across the blonde girl's face. "Hey, Mel, you hear that? They're Cape kids!"

The brunette slowly looked up from her compact mirror and lipstick, a similar expression forming. "Oh, is that so?" Her manicured nails disappeared into the bag and returned framing a PokéBall. "Cape students. Hmph."

Casey and Jordan exchanged puzzled glances. The blonde girl pulled a PokeBall from her pocket. "I think we should introduce ourselves. I'm Sara, and this is my beautiful girlfriend, Melanie. And we graduated from Safari Academy three years ago!"

"Oh neat, my sister went to Safari-" Casey was cut off by the release of two Pokémon. A Rockruff appeared in front of Sara, shaking out its fur. Melanie's Pokémon captured more attention, however. The Onix roared as it stretched toward the sky, blotting out the waning afternoon sun.

"Come on, choose yours!" Sara demanded, snapping the boys' focus back to her. Casey grinned at Jordan as he chose a PokéBall. Jordan's nerves dissipated, and he smiled back. He turned around.

"Sage, you're up!" Her ears perked up and she came running over, with Spirit on her heels. Sage stepped in front of Jordan, as Spirit scrambled up his shoulder to get a better view. Jordan grimaced, and Melanie frowned in disapproval at the mud that was now dripping down his arm.

"Parsley, let's go!" Casey released his own Skiddo, who immediately started bouncing around in excitement. The Rockruff growled at him, but Parsley only seemed to lock in on it as a potential playmate.

"If you two insist on standing around, I'll take that opportunity! Kingsley, Rock Polish!"

The Onix gleamed for a moment, throwing refracted light across the basin. Sara called "Swagger!" and Rockruff pranced its way up Onix's back, looking straight at Parsley as it strutted its way along the fading rocks. Parsley, however, was paying far more attention to his footing over Onix's shifting body as he chased after his new playmate.

"Hey!" Casey yelled. "Where are you- uh, Pursuit!" Parsley attempted to obey but the Rockruff dodged easily, clearly used to this moving terrain.

"Don't worry, Case, we got your back…" Jordan had been shielding his face from the light that danced around the basin, but as his eyes adjusted, he felt more confident in the battle. Sage was a Grass-type. He knew Grass-types. What he didn't know was… where did she go?

"Sage!" she poked her head back out at the sound of her name, dragging a hairbrush with her as she pulled herself away from Melanie's purse. She trotted over proudly and dropped it in front of Jordan. A delighted Spirit hopped off Jordan to pick it up and play with it. Oh, this can't be good… he thought to himself as he glanced up at the girl.

If Melanie was offended when she first laid eyes on them, she was now livid. "Get your mangy, muddy Pokemon away from my things!" she wailed shrilly. "Kingsley! Bind!"

Rockruff and Parsley wobbled as the Onix ignored their presence on his back, lashing his tail out to grab the preoccupied Skiddo. She yelped as the Onix wrapped his tail around her body, trapping her in place.

"Sage! Vine Whip!" The Skiddo struggled to unleash her attack, but was bound too tightly to move. The Onix squeezed tighter. "Oh no, she's stuck!" Jordan turned to Casey with an exasperated look on his face. "Come on, do something! Parsley must know Vine Whip, too!"

"Parsley!" Casey's Pokémon, who had been bouncing around trying to get Rockruff to chase him, swiveled his attention to his trainer. "Use- use- Tackle the tail!"

Even with gravity and momentum on his side, Parsley's running Tackle did little. Jordan exhaled sharply through his nostrils. "Man, really?" Spirit, who had grown bored of the hairbrush, had set it back down and resumed his position on Jordan's shoulder. He also gave Casey a disapproving look and clicked his tongue.

    "It's- I don't-"

"Parsley, Vine Whip! Help your buddy out!" Jordan interjected before Casey could finish whatever he was going to say. Behind the Onix, the girls looked perplexed, and also slightly amused, at the uncoordinated fiasco that was unfolding in front of them. "Really, these are the top students of Cape?" Jordan could hear Melanie scoff.

"Wh- hey!" Casey complained. Parsley tugged Sage out of the bind, leaving both of them standing atop Onix's lower half. The Onix flicked its tail in an attempt to recapture Sage, but both Skiddo easily kept themselves out of reach.

Jordan grinned unapologetically. "There, was that so hard? If you're gonna have a Grass Pokemon, you really need to get over this."

"I know," Casey groaned, but was shaken from self-conflict when Rockruff darted toward the Skiddo, shadow copies of itself left in its wake. "Parsley! Tackle it!" Parsley met Rockruff with a ramming Tackle, but the Rockruff sank electrified teeth into his pelt all the same. Parsley bounded back up the Onix's back, determined to shake the Rockruff. Jordan knew he had to send Sage in their for some assistance. "Well, time to do what you do best," aside from stealing things, he added mentally. "Play Nice!" Sage's eyes sparkled as she skipped over to the Rockruff, eagerly drawing its attention to herself.

Both opponents let their guard down simultaneously. The imposed belief that neither Skiddo was a threat was… probably pretty accurate, but now- now there was an opportunity. Parsley tackled the Rockruff into Onix's horn but the determined puppy held fast, teeth crackling with renewed electricity.

"Try your Vine Whip again!" Jordan called out. Sage obliged, and the Onix roared in pain at the vines cracked against his body, shaking up the two Pokemon fighting on it once more. This helped Parsley more than anything- Rockruff finally let go and flew through the air, landing hard on one of the waterfall's outcrops while Parsley barely caught his footing near Onix's horn.

"Queenie!" Sara cried. The puppy staggered to its feet.

"Hmph," Melanie exhaled. She pushed her hair back and gave them a mischievous smile. "Let's show them where our strengths truly lie. Kingsley! Attract!"

He lowered his head, Parsley keeping impressive balance, and his gaze met Sage's. Something came over the Skiddo, and her expression softened as she gazed back. Uh oh. This was an expression Jordan knew too well. "No! Stop! Look away, Sage, look away! Tackle!"

It was too late. The Skiddo swooned, skipping over to wherever the Onix turned his head, trying to get him to focus on her rather than Parsley atop his head. Jordan attempted a few more commands, but she wouldn't attack. "Um. Well. This is almost cute." Jordan sighed. "Okay, forget the Onix. Sage, Tackle the Rockruff?"

Her eyes fluttered briefly, but Jordan was relieved to see the effect did not extend to their other opponent as well. She composed herself, and with a running start, tackled into the Rockruff that had just shaken the water out of its fur. She took the hit without trouble, only sliding back a few feet.

"Queenie, distance!" The puppy dashed up Onix's back to meet Parsley at the top. "Ah, perfect! Now, Swagger!"

"No!" Casey's outburst was ineffective. Rockruff captured Parsley's attention as strutted its way around Onix's head. "Parsley, Pursuit!"

Parsley shook himself and executed a perfect hit... at the Onix's horn, which did little but annoy the creature. "Parsley- no- the Rockruff-"

"Um." Jordan could see Parsley was going to need some assistance for the time being. "Sage, get up there and help him!"

Thankfully, the infatuation did not seem to stop her from stepping on her "love"'s back, but she did seem to tread more gently. This caution came at a price, though- Rockruff bolted away from the agitated Parsley, and barreled towards her. "Look out! Give it a Vine Whip!" Jordan shouted, but was quickly countered with Sara calling out "Bite!", and the Rockruff sank her teeth into the approaching Sage before she could react. The Skiddo squealed, blindly lashing her vines out at her attacker. Her target was small, but their 'battleground' wasn't; the Vine Whip landed on Onix instead, who roared and whipped his head around to face the creatures on its back.

    Parsley fell.

Casey watched, horrified, as his Pokémon was thrown from way too high- there's no time- he can't land, I have to-

    "VINE WHIP!"

Parsley's vines caught around Onix's horn and slowed the Skiddo's drop, swinging him into the pool at the base of the waterfall with a splash. Casey breathed again, heart hammering in his chest. The Onix followed shortly after, crashing down across the stream, Sage and Rockruff leaping for stable ground as he went down.

"Kingsley!" Melanie screamed, as she gingerly crossed the shallow stream to check on her Pokemon, careful not to get her clothes too wet. "Babe, he'll be fine…" Sara trailed after her, and her Rockruff cocked her head to the side as it waited for instruction.

Parsley surfaced and clambered out of the pool, shaking cold water from his pelt before trotting over to rejoin Sage. Rockruff growled at his approach.

Jordan looked at Casey and shrugged. "Um. Miss?"

Melanie ignored them in favor of comforting Onix but Sara's head shot up, glare evident even at a distance. "What?" she snapped.

"We ah- your Rockruff…" he changed his mind and shook his head. "Nevermind! It was a… good battle!"

"Yeah, whatever. Leave." As an afterthought, she added: "And don't come back here; this is ours."

"Right! Sorry for ruining your… this." Jordan said meekly before ushering Casey along the stream, in the opposite direction. Parsley, immediately aware of the movement, gave chase. "Sage!" Jordan hissed. The Skiddo paused for a moment, but instead of following her trainer she bolted over to… something, before heading over the stream.

"Wh-" Jordan was defeated. When will she listen to me? he wondered, as he ran to catch up to her. Still on his shoulder, Spirit held onto his ear for support.

She meandered across the stream towards the girls. "For God's sake. What do you want...? Oh-" Melanie's expression softened, as the Skiddo dropped a hairbrush in her lap. For the first time since they got here, Jordan saw a genuine smile cross the girl's face. Sage stepped back after the girl pet her, and bounded back across the stream to join Parsley.

"Um… we are sorry for everything," Jordan said earnestly.

"But it was also really good training- ow." Casey's whisper was cut off by an elbow to his side.

"Have a good rest of your evening!"

"Thanks for the battle!" Casey waved.

The girls didn't say anything more as they waved back, but Jordan could see a hint of a smile on their faces as he turned around.

    Casey Holt & Jordan Springs
    Wednesday, 22 May 2019
    Evening • Day 3
    Route 9
After some time, they finally find an actual trail.

That trail leads to a slightly wider trail which in turn drops them onto what is considered the main road, though it's still a hike. Somehow they're on the eastern half of the route already, which brings up the question- do they push on to the Pokémon Center, or do they make camp for the night?

"I need a shower," Casey says, picking dried mud out of the lining of his jacket. Parsley sticks his tongue into the collar. "Thanks..."

"I think we all need a shower," Jordan responds, looking at his muddy Pokemon trotting in front of him. "Too bad those girls didn't want to share 'their' spot".

    "Tryna show off?"

Jordan sighs wistfully. Casey shakes his head. "I don't get it."

Jordan pats him on the back. "One day, my sweet boy."

"If you say so." Casey shrugs and looks somewhat contemplative. "Don't get why they climbed all the way up there just to kiss, either."

Jordan fumbles for his words. "It's… you know… romantic..." he looks at Casey's mystified expression. "Nevermind. One day, I said."

"You'll be the first to know, I guess." Casey gives up on his muddy jacket with a sigh. Hand wash only… what a pain that's going to be. "How far is it to the Pokémon Center, do you think?"

"Ahm… if we walk all evening, we might make it there by nine or ten," Jordan taps the map in his hands. He glances over at Casey. "You good with being in those clothes for another couple hours?"

    "It's kind of itchy."

    "You smell, too."

"Do I?" Casey sticks his nose into his jacket. "Ugh. Can we find a stream or something?"

"Mm, it's starting to get dark now, if we're gonna stop by a stream and clean our clothes and stuff, we might as well camp out for the night. You got your gear, right?"

"Yep! Tent, sleeping bag, water bottle… other stuff… Uh. Is water marked on that map? That'd be convenient."

"Yeah, it's all the... blue stuff between the green stuff. You know how to read a map, right?" Casey knocks a shoulder into him. "There's one right over there, let's go!"

Parsley is the first to respond, dashing in the direction Jordan points. Sage runs after him, with Spirit almost flying off her back. "No- wait, you gotta wait for your trainers!" Casey yells as he runs after the Pokémon. Jordan opens his mouth to call them back, but they are all long gone before anything comes out. He hears a distant splash and lets out a sigh, jogging over to see what happened.

Casey sits in the middle of the foot-deep stream, wriggling out of his backpack.

"I see you got a head start on that shower." On the other side of the stream, Jordan sees their Pokemon chasing each other and notes they are still completely dry, unlike Casey.

"They tricked me," is all the explanation Casey gives. He finally gets the backpack off, tosses it onto the bank, and lays down completely in the stream. The water rushing over him is nice. Kinda chilly. He's going to be cold soon. The sun's going down already. All his stuff is going to have to dry by morning. He jumps up, splashing water everywhere, and points at Jordan. "Charmander- uh- Pepper can help!"

"Hope we have more than a pile of ashes to wear tomorrow," Jordan disappears behind some trees and returns shortly in a set of clean clothes from his bag. He dunks his muddy clothes in the stream and crouches near Casey, wringing them out. Casey gets out and shamelessly shucks all his clothing into the stream before finding his towel and dry clothes.

"Hey, cool, my tent bein' on the bottom kept everything else dry! Also-" he rifles through a side pocket and presents his find to Jordan. "Paracord!"

"Awesome! We can make friendship bracelets!" Jordan teases, inspecting the length of rope. "I'm kidding, that will definitely come in handy."

"It's a clothesline today," Casey drops it again in favor of actually putting clothes on. "Pepper can sit under it and- wait, do you think his flame makes things have that smoky campfire smell?"

"I guess we'll find out soon enough." Jordan shrugs. "Probably not a bad time to let 'em all out." He reaches over to where he left his belt and pulls off his Poke Balls, releasing Hop and Tangela. Sage trots over to sniff them, and before long, she and Spirit are re-enacting the Onix-Rockruff battle for the two of them.

Casey has to fish his clothes out of the stream and retrieve the PokéBalls from his pockets before following suit. Parsley prances over to Pepper as soon as he appears and they start a game of chase up and down the bank of the stream. Buneary promptly gives Casey an earful about the sorry state of his jacket.

"It'll dry out! And I'm gonna put the tent up, it'll be nice and comfortable in there!" Buneary begins a slow, even tap of her foot. "...Jordan, we gotta put the tents up now."

The ground near the stream is surprisingly flat. A patch of scraggly bushes offers the idea of shelter from the wind and two trees offer anchor points for the paracord. He dumps out the contents of his backpack and strings the cord through all his wet things first, and Jordan follows suit after he finishes wringing out his clothes. Casey sniffs Pepper's flame. He doesn't smell smoky, just… weird. Like Pokémon. He elects not to make their stuff smell like that. Their clothes- plus his backpack and boots- should be dry by morning anyway. He'll have to deal with the leather before he goes to bed, though. He does have that nice conditioner that Sorley sold him; may as well crack that open.

The tents go up without much difficulty. Casey props the door to his open and throws his sleeping bag inside to appease Buneary. She seems satisfied even when Parsley flops down next to her. Inside his own tent, Jordan sprawls out face-down with his entourage around him. It's a two-person tent, so even with his long limbs and body occupying the center, there is space for his Pokemon to enter around him. "Oof." he grunts as he feels a hoof on his back and Casey's elbow in his side. He half-listens to whatever Casey's saying.

"Paprika. Saffron. Cardamom. Nutmeg. Clove. Cinnamon… Cinnamon Roll! Toast. French Toast? Peanut Butter. Muffin. Clementine. Uh…"

Jordan lifts his head up, quizzical expression on his face. "Are you hungry?"

"Nah, I'm thinking of names for Buneary! But uh, now that you mention it…"

Jordan feels a rumble in his stomach. "I think you made me hungry with your names list, too."

"Well, let's make something! What do we have?"

Jordan flips back over and sits up, grabbing his bag. He starts pulling out the cans he bought in Cerulean City. "Let's see! We have beans, fish, tomatoes…" he glances over at Spirit, wondering if the corn is now considered part of dinner.

"I brought rice!" Casey adds, pulling a sack of said ingredient out of his pile of things. He drags a pot and a roasting stick out for good measure. "That goes with anything, right?"

"Yeah! We have a good, healthy meal here between us, I think," Jordan looks proudly at the stack of cans next to his bag. "Who says we can't feed ourselves…" his voice trails off as he roots around the front pocket. "I ah- hm. We might have a slight problem here."

    "What? Why?"

"I don't remember getting my matches back after the Skiddo debacle. Did you maybe put it away…?"

"Nah, I woulda put 'em in that pocket. The one you always put 'em in." Casey looks mildly concerned for half a second before he brightens. "But we don't need matches!"

Jordan picks up a can and reads the label. "I guess we can eat these cold, but the rice…"

"Pepper is a fire! We can just cook things over him!" Pepper scampers over, followed closely by Parsley. "Oh, good timing."

Jordan opens his mouth to protest, but closes it to stop and consider. "You know what? Not your worst idea. Pick a can, let's try it. But uh, outside." he quickly added.

Casey wiggles out of the tent with a can of tomatoes in hand. "Pepper, c'mere and stay still for a sec." Pepper sits obediently and Casey holds the can over his tail for about three seconds before pulling back. "Nope, too hot," he mutters, half to himself.

"Hm," Jordan thinks for a moment. "Oh! I know." he returns to his tent and pushes out a curious Tangela. "Your vines don't feel pain, right? Think you can dangle the can over Pepper's fire to heat it up?"

She glances at the fire, not looking particularly excited to try this.

"We just… gotta be careful. It'll be fine. Probably," Jordan shrugs, nudging her forward. "Is there maybe… how do you turn down the fire?" he pokes Pepper's tail at its base. The tail twitches and smacks his hand.

"I dunno. Pepper, can you lower it?" Pepper concentrates, and the flame shrinks by about a third.

"Okay, now we're cookin'!" Jordan exclaims. "Well, not yet, but you know what I mean." He pauses, then disappears into the tent again, pulling out Casey's pot. He jogs down to the stream and returns with it brimming with water. "There, a precaution." he says to Tangela, who still seems dubious, but satisfied enough to try. She picks up one of the bean cans, and gingerly holds it over Pepper's flame, standing about four feet away with her vines outstretched.

The boys watch for a while. It goes well until the flames start to get brighter and before they can question what's happening, Tangela's vines are on fire. Her eyes grow wide, and she runs towards Jordan, flaming vines still outstretched.

"W-whoa!" Jordan calms her down enough to stop waving the fiery tendrils in the air, and dumps the contents of the pot over her. She shakes her vines out angrily and shoots him a dirty look as he apologizes profusely. At least she wasn't on fire anymore.

"Okay, that almost worked! We just gotta hold it with something else… ah!" Casey drags his roasting fork over and stabs another can near the top. Some bean juice seeps out. "And now we just…" He holds it just above the flames.

"Higher! Did you not see what just happened?" Jordan holds out a burnt vine.

"Fine, fine." Casey stands and holds it high above the flames for a few minutes. His patience quickly runs out and he draws the can back to check. "It's barely warm," he complains. "I'm gonna put it lower again; I'm not a Grass-type."

He does so. When he draws it back this time, the can is definitely hot to the touch. Casey waves it at Jordan, something like "here, open it," barely audible around the fingers in his mouth.

Jordan motions for him to set it down, and prods it with his finger. "Ouch!" he exclaims, drawing his hand back. "Okay, maybe we can…" he roots around his bag and pulls out a folded knife. He flips the blade open, and stabs the top of the can, making the hole from Casey's fork earlier big enough for the contents to slowly pour into one of their camp bowls. If only they could pick it up.

"...I don't suppose you brought mittens, did you?"

    "Nope."

Jordan looks at the steaming can. "Well. I see this as a success. Let's just… leave it there for now and work on something else. We can come back when it cools down a bit, right?"

    Arianne Chandler & Ralph Gonder - Route 9 - Day 3 - May 22nd
    Joint post with Astronaut

♫ - Pendulum & In Flames - Self Vs Self

    "Ari?"

Ralph heaved herself up and swatted some dust off herself, fully aware that she probably looked worse from hiking a few hours on Route 9 than she had after all of Route 25 and 24. Okay, maybe not after the river adventure.
When she looked up again, she could see that the black haired girl had spotted her too. Ralph silently wondered if that would have actually been a better path than Sandsy's climby detours.
Nevertheless, seeing Arianne again brought a warm smile to the purple haired girl's face.

    "Ralph!"

Arianne quickly reached the ledge that led onto the main route and jumped down from the small, grassy area where she fought the hiker. By then, no more than a few steps were necessary to fall into Ralph's arms and hug her tightly. At first that could have deemed an exaggerated reaction, but… not after knowing what little Ari had been through that day. Thankfully, the other girl welcomed the hug without problems.

"Nice to meet you again Ralph! How's it going?" Arianne asked as they pulled apart, still avoiding to talk about the masked trainers she had met. As she spoke, Squirtle poked from behind his trainer's shoulders, waving at the purple haired girl.

"Same, girl," Ralph replied, and then also gave a quick affectionate pat on Squirtle's head. Sandsy waved up to him from the ground also with a friendly squeak. "I guess I had an… eventful day in Cerulean. Actually kind of relieved to be back on the road again. How about-"

She studied the black haired girl as she spoke, watched the purple tendrils in her hair fall over her ears and cheeks, noticed a similar but different shade of violet in the eyes of the pokemon riding on her back…

"-Wait, is Squirtle using Healing Pulse?" Ralph interrupted herself, grabbing both of Ari's shoulders. "Did you get hurt again?"

"Well yes." the girl muttered, as Ralph got a hold of her. Squirtle did his best not to lose balance and stared at Ralph. "It happened this morning, in Cerulean. But now I'm feeling better."

Arianne took some heavy breaths and tried to gain back her composure. The Water type directed his Heal Pulse towards Ralph for a moment, hoping to at least cheer her up. "But what happened to you this morning?"
Ralph didn't realize that Squirtle had shifted his target, but she would notice later that her ankle wasn't aching anymore.

For now, she sighed and let go of her friend. "The dragons ran off from the gym somehow," she answered. "I found Hoshi's Dragonite - well, it was sick and weakened," she added with an annoyed tinge, "but we managed to subdue it. I wonder how they all got chased off from the gym though. The dragon we met was crazed and angry. But pokémon don't just become like that for no reason. I think someone must have forced them away, or scared them somehow." Her face was solemn as her stare was off into an undefined distance as she existed deep inside her thoughts and theories now.

"Well I might know more about them after what happened to me." Arianne gestured to Ralph as they started walking towards Rock Tunnel yet again. "I'll have to explain this better at a later point but… this is the juice of the story."

Arianne stuttered at first, still uncomfortable to tell her experience, but eventually let go. "So, this morning, I tried to help a cop who was struggling to chase a criminal. And guess what? When I eventually cornered that person, I found another Dragon from the gym."

The girl tried to keep talking amidst her heavy breathing.

"A-and this masked girl I was chasing… she just caught the Dragon herself, while immobilizing me with her Drapion. I tried to fight back but… I don't know if I could have done better or if she was just too strong, but… I lost. D-drapion hurt my back, but not as much as it hurt my feelings, you know?"
One more pause… "That's why I'm so happy to meet you again here, Ralph!"

Ralph listened, jaw dropped. There was a lot to take in about Ari's experience, but one thing struck her the hardest. "A pokémon hurt you?" she asked, and was getting worked up over it rapidly. "What kind of trainer would let that happen?"

She put a hand on Ari's shoulder as they walked. "I'm glad you have Squirtle, girl," Ralph continued. "That little man is a blessing with his weirdo power. And I haven't forgotten that you helped save my life in the river," she added with a nod towards the turtle. "But Ari, did you go to the police about this trainer? And… did they get away with the dragon?"

"Yes and… yes. The cops didn't come in time to help but by now they know everything that happened." Arianne replied with a serious tone.

"And yes…" she chuckled, her mind drifting towards Squirtle even though she couldn't see him. "You're both so precious! Now, you said you fought against Hoshi's Dragonite… the two facts must have been connected."

The two girls kept walking onwards, along the main path, as Arianne checked the time on her PokéGear. There should have been plenty of time to reach Rock Tunnel, but only if the two girls would remain focused and would follow the path.

Ralph scratched her head, behind the big bun she'd wrapped much of the purple dreads up in, and shrugged. "Oh well, it's not our problem anymore I guess. It was just weird. Bad luck that it happened when we were there, also. Now we're supposed to trek through some long tunnel to get to a hipster town. I guess it's still better than being stuck at Cape College for another year;" she said, not really realizing that she had just touched upon the subject of her being a legit Leftover.

"Have you caught any more pokémon yet, Ari?" she then continued. "I adopted a special Sandshrew in Cerulean. Not like Sandsy, but an Ice Type! And my Weedle evolved."
"I still have Squirtle and Pineco, but I've adopted a Pichu in Cerulean. That's really it… you, on the other hand…" Arianne paused, sparkles in her eyes. "An evolution! That's so cool!"
Ralph smiled at that. "Yeah… Although I hope he evolves further soon. He doesn't seem to enjoy being a grumpy immobile Kakuna."
"How do you think my Pineco is feeling?" Arianne chuckled.
"Right," Ralph laughed. "Poor thing. I've seen you throw it in a mean combo though. You and her are like half of a whole pokémon."
"Aww thanks!" Arianne replied, this time laughing with more conviction. "I'm just trying to help!" she added proudly, probably not entirely understanding what point Ralph was trying to get across.

The other girl shook her head, then thought for a moment. "I can just hear Palm's voice in my head though. 'It's important to discover and learn to use each pokémon's unique strengths.' I'm sure Pineco has her great strengths that will prove important. And you should probably call up Palm and tell him all about it when you find them, he'll give you a gold star for sure," she laughed.

"Will do, eventually… not now because I'm angry with him for making me go through Rock Tunnel, but I will." She couldn't quite stop herself from complaining about Palm's decisions once she heard his name. "But about Pineco… she's already becoming a strong Pokemon! And who knows what other moves she will learn in the future! Maybe she just needs to stop being generous to the point of using Self Destruct without care."
Pineco was resting in her Pokeball after the fight with Riolu, but wasn't fainted this time. Maybe she could hear what her trainer was saying?

"Yea, wow," Ralph commented with raised eyebrows. "Self-Destruct is strong and useful, but… Probably not healthy for her, no. Keep training, I guess. And maybe catch more team members also? I know our journey is suuuper long, we've hardly even begun. But I feel… Like it's really fun to capture new pokémon. You know?"

"Hey, she's the one who attempts to explode!" Arianne pointed out, a slight pout on her face. She then paused, thinking about what to do. Catching new rare Pokémon, or keep going steadily towards Rock Tunnel? "Let's see… Do we have time for that? I was unsure myself about what to do because I'd like to get as close as I can to Rock Tunnel… but I was told by that hiker that there are very cool and rare Pokémon in this route… like Riolu!"

She still had that sweet, eager Fighting Type from before in her mind. Such a cutie!

"Oh, shoot," Ralph said, hitting her forehead with her palm. "We're in a hurry, yeah. I should have left Cerulean much earlier, but… Got held up. Met Aberdeen again. Anyways, maybe we shouldn't linger and try to find pokémon here even though-"
She stopped in her tracks and looked to the left. There was a rocky ledge above them, and they couldn't see what was above. "Did you hear something?"

"Uhmm… no? What happened, Ralph?" Arianne turned towards the other girl, who was standing beside her just an instant before. Not knowing what Ralph had sensed, she remained alert. "Maybe there's a way to get up there?" she said, looking at the ledge that her friend was also facing.

"Was probably nothing, I thought it was a… Jigglypuff or something," Ralph said, but realized how weird that must sound. The trainer from above had gone in the other direction, after all.
But she suddenly noticed that Sandsy was on the alert, staring up towards the ledge. Maybe he had heard something too.

This time, even Arianne could hear what seemed like a second, stronger, Pokémon cry. She couldn't really pinpoint which Pokémon it belonged to, which made things all the more interesting. Ralph's words echoed in her head… after all, she'd just said it was fun to capture new Pokémon. "Can I at least take a peek?" the black haired girl said, as she eagerly tried to climb the ledge.

"Isn't it easier if Sands- oh whatever," Ralph said uselessly, as it was clear there's no stopping Ari once she takes action.

She just wasn't that good at it: just like with climbing trees… if those trees were absolutely huge. With the help of some exposed roots and pebbles, Arianne got up fairly quickly at the beginning of her climb, only to get slowed down the further up she tried to climb. Even then, Ralph's words couldn't breach past her excitement… which was in part due to her meeting with Riolu some time before.

Once Arianne was able to lift her head above the ledge, though, she saw nothing but rocks, rocks and more rocks. And some courageous plants trying to grow in such a place. No Pokémon, however, other than maybe a couple of Geodudes.

Arianne slowly climbed down, trying to keep calm and not to fall. "Well, whatever was there has probably left by the time I got up to check… plus, that ledge really is quite tough to climb" she declared in between heavy breaths. "But those cries probably mean there are some rare Pokémon nearby! Maybe we should really take a detour in this area, while we can! So… what do you say Ralph?"

Ralph debated with herself internally. To find and capture new team members… it was crucial for her journey. But so was having a decent bed to sleep in. Although, if they didn't reach Rock Tunnel by nightfall… She would be able to sleep in the outdoors if necessary.

"Alright," she said, suppressing a sigh. Her thirst for adventure and love of freedom from rules and expectations won her over. And also Ari's smile was infectious. "Let's climb."

"Yes!" the smile turned into laughter for a moment as Arianne tried to climb the rocky ledge again, this time from a different and probably easier route. Aside from some pebbles falling down on the path, the rocky surface seemed quite solid, allowing the girl to get on top relatively safely. The back pain from Drapion's claws was still there, and while it slowed down the black haired girl, it couldn't stop her enthusiasm entirely.

It did, however, occupy Arianne's mind for enough time to have her say: "We may get into trouble by doing this…" before she shook her head and continued: "Nah, it's gotta be worth the climb."

Ralph raised an eyebrow at that comment, but was currently striving to climb up with Sandshrew's help, so she didn't say anything.

On top of the ledge, at first sight, there were only more cliffs and boulders. "Maybe we're not quite there yet… we should explore more of this upper area!" Arianne stated once she got on top, before adding "We should still follow the general direction of the main path, though."

But Ralph and Sandsy had noticed something that Ari hadn't. "Wait, Ari, look out!" Ralph called out, just as a couple of the boulders behind the black haired girl seemed to unfold and take off towards her. "It's Geodude!"

Arianne turned just in time to see a group of Geodude approaching her. She called out Squirtle, who she'd returned to her Pokéball in order to climb more easily… and he in turn braced himself for a fight, ready to use Water Gun as soon as Arianne would have told him to. No need to worry too much, it was super effective after all.

The Geodude squad was still, relentlessly, moving forward, definitely startled by the sudden appearance of the two girls, when Squirtle eventually fired off his Water Gun. The attack, however, didn't quite hit the target… well, the right target.

Sliding down the nearby slope came a different Pokémon… definitely not a Geodude.

In a weird role reversion, the actual Geodudes were hit and scattered in different directions by a blue… bowling pin Pokémon, who surely didn't seem to be having a good time. Some of them fell down on the main path, others quickly backed off, unwilling to fight against the furious creature that had just appeared. Apparently a rogue blue Pokémon was scarier than two girls and a Squirtle.

Route 9, Wednesday May 22nd, afternoon

Once the dust settled down, Arianne examined the newcomer from a distance, expecting to have a very powerful Pokémon in front of her. But there was probably nothing to be scared about - if anything, that Pokémon was hurt and needed help.

There was just a slight problem. The Water Gun from Squirtle hit… that blue Pokémon. It didn't seem to do much damage, only leaving behind some small puddles near the wild creature, but it probably startled it even more.

"It's a Bagon," Ralph said from behind Ari and the pokemon. "A young dragon. I saw one in the Cerulean gym. Forgot they lived here. Pretty rare. And pretty angry?"

"Bagon you said? That's rare indeed!" Arianne took some steps closer to the Dragon type, but without getting too close yet. "Do you think it just tried to fly? That's what Bagon usually does…"

"Oh right!" Ralph laughed, "it's the pokemon who keeps trying to fly without realizing you gotta have wings for it. Or jetbeams. Well if it tried now, it probably jumped off from up there," she added and pointed to an even higher cliff, "and saved us in the process. What a good guy. Do you think it got hurt though?"

"Well they say, Bagon doesn't care about it anyway. He's just so stubborn!" Arianne paused, her expression becoming more worried. "But hurt or not hurt… I have the slight feeling it doesn't like me that much."

"Probably not," Ralph grinned. "You and twinkle eyes just attacked it unprovoked. As if you were a pokemon trainer on the hunt for new wild pokemon to capture!" She hoped Ari would take the hint, as she stepped away from the others slightly and gestured for Sandsy to follow her lead.

Ralph made Arianne get back her smile, as the black haired girl pulled out a Pokéball out of her backpack. "I don't really want to fight it in these conditions… let's see if this works" she said, about to throw her Pokéball. She, however, hesitated for a moment. "Sure you don't want it? You also wanted to catch new Pokémon didn't you?"

Ralph was about to say a simple 'no, of course it's yours', but something stopped her before she could get those words out. She looked at the dragon in front of them. It would evolve into a mighty Salamence one day. Some of the strongest pokemon there was. And Bagon were rare, probably only found here in all of Kanto. She might never get the chance to capture one again.

She could claim it. Somehow say that she deserved it better. Or ask to battle Ari for it. It wouldn't be the first time she'd settle a dispute with brute force or by outsmarting others.

The Bagon grunted at them with challenge in its eyes. Squirtle looked up to his trainer for advice, and Ralph turned to look at her too. There was anticipation in Arianne's eyes. That girl had asked Ralph for permission to capture the wild pokemon she'd already interacted with, essentially. It was a bit ridiculous. Ralph should just say 'no, of course it's yours'. But a Bagon. A Salamence.

    She really wanted it too.

"No," she somehow said though, surprising herself. She was hoping the rapid swirl of changing emotions in her over the past couple of seconds wasn't noticeable on her features. "Go ahead."

Without any more words, Arianne threw her PokéBall at the dragon, who was still laying on the ground, trying to get back up. It got sucked into the device, who remained closed shut for a couple of seconds… yes, no longer than a couple of seconds. Bagon had been able to free itself, breaking out of the PokéBall, and was now standing up, trembling, still glaring at the two girls.

Ralph cleared her throat, trying hard not to let a quip out. "Stubborn," she said. "Might need a battle." She would easily be able to take it down herself, if it was her who would do the capture. But she let Ari be.

"No going back then! Use Tackle!"

Squirtle launched himself towards the Bagon, who seemed to be just too hurt to dodge. The Dragon was knocked away, but endured the hit as best as it could and still, glanced at the girls with fiery eyes. It's like it wanted to continue fighting no matter what.

At this point, Arianne could only tell Squirtle to attack again: so, another Tackle hit the Dragon Type, having it back up closer to the slope it slid down from. And just like before, Bagon didn't have enough of it. No, actually this time it hit back!

Bagon lunged back at Squirtle, his whole body being surrounded in a red aura. The Turtle Pokémon definitely didn't expect such a strong retaliation coming from an already hurt opponent, but was able to stand his ground - and not fall down from the ledge - by using Withdraw just in time.

That attack was definitely Rage! A move that becomes more powerful as the user takes hits… but makes it also more careless and unrelenting in battle. And maybe even harder to catch.

Ralph couldn't stand just watching. "I'll help you," she said. "Edgy, go! Use Harden!"

She tossed the bug's pokéball up, and out came the Kakuna. As usual, he was a bit slow to take action. But when he landed in between Squirtle and Bagon and saw the glowing dragonling approaching, he automatically used Harden to brace himself for the impact. His solid body bounced away some, but didn't take much damage. Grumpily, he jumped back up and glared at the dragon.

Ralph felt a rush of adrenaline. This Bagon was no match for them, for sure. "Now, Acrobatics!"

She wasn't really sure of what to expect from this move, and had been a bit surprised to see that Edgy had learned it recently. Clearly, the Bagon was surprised too, and was easily struck by the cocoon of doom from above.

Bagon was knocked even further away by the attack - not even its armored head could protect it fully. But the Dragon type didn't have enough of it yet, and actually this time had the perfect move to hit its new opponent with. Lifting its head just enough, Bagon fired off an Ember towards Edgy!

Harden didn't protect Edgy much against this. The bug was enveloped by the embers and made a loud noise of pain.

"No!" Ralph exclaimed. She hadn't considered that the dragon might know a fire move. This wasn't looking good.

"Bagon is that strong…" commented Arianne, her memory of Cerulean resurfacing. That Dragon type maybe wouldn't have made a big difference in that situation, but it was still too good to pass up, even for her.

The embers subsided and left a burned Edgy on the ground, Bagon with a triumphant, pumped up grin on its face. But then it happened.

Edgy's body started glowing, rising, and changing shape. Within seconds, a much more imposing form buzzed above their heads, and its red eyes were aimed with renewed rage at the small dragon.

"Finally," Ralph said with the widest grin. "Beedrill!"

    Spoiler:

Arianne stared in awe at the newly evolved Pokémon. "C-congratulations Ralph!" she yelled, her voice somewhat cracking. This turn of events, though, was probably not exactly optimal. Beedrill would have probably either hurt Bagon way beyond its breaking point, or merely made its Rage attack stronger. Trying not to be heard by Ralph, Arianne whispered a command to Squirtle, who was now close to his trainer - and his eyes began to glow again.

The target of Heal Pulse this time was Bagon itself! It made the fight more even in a sense, but also calmed it down… or, more realistically, made the Dragon type feel a bit more numb and unable to focus on its Rage.

The other girl didn't notice. She was completely focused on her new bee. "Edgy…" What moves would Beedrill have? "Do your thing!" She hoped that would work.

It seemed to work. Edgy dove through the air, needles at the ready. The dragon was starting to spout Embers at him, but he flew straight through them to strike Bagon hard in the chest. The attack seemed to hurt… But it didn't make the Bagon faint.

"How is it that resilient?" Ralph panted in disbelief.

"It's fine, it's fine!" Arianne reassured her friend. "We can still catch it."

She then grabbed another PokéBall and held it in her hand, trying to take aim. She couldn't quite throw it yet, as Edgy and Squirtle were still in the way, and Bagon was a bit too far for her liking.

And so, Arianne and Squirtle took some steps towards the Dragon type, still remaining alert not to be attacked by it… but also looking back at Ralph every once in a while.

Ralph snapped then. She just couldn't let Ari catch it. "Edgy, Twineedle!"

Beedrill reacted faster than he usually did - perhaps evolution sharpened his senses? - and almost instantly started diving down again towards the Bagon. But the dragon had already started backing away, and seeing the new attack coming now, he actually turned around completely and started running… Towards the ledge leading down towards the main road.

Arianne couldn't just let it run away though! After everything Ralph and her did, one of them deserved to catch the Bagon… not to mention, it was definitely not normal for it to run away from a fight… (probably the effect of Heal Pulse?)

Squirtle and Arianne's steps eventually turned into running: they followed the cliffside, trying to approach Bagon before it would, well, try to fly again… and get hurt yet again. And trying to get a clear shot with the PokéBall.

Edgy thankfully halted his approach when Ari obstructed the line to his target. Ralph was not happy with that turn of events though. "Ari! What are you doing!"

"No! Fly! ZONE!" shouted Arianne, panting and huffing as she finally grabbed herself the Bagon, who was in fact trying to "fly" away from the commotion (like the girl predicted). With one hand, she gripped onto the dragon's body just as it tried to jump, but in doing so, fell to the ground and left Squirtle watching, puzzled, from further behind.

Ralph watched on, as if frozen. Some part of her intently wanted to reach for a pokéball.

Arianne's other hand, somehow, still held her own Pokéball tightly. She just hadn't even thought about throwing it, but now there was no need to. As soon as she could, the girl mashed the Pokéball onto Bagon's armor multiple times, eventually getting it to work.

The device shook wildly in Arianne's hand, who was still holding onto it as firmly as she could, before finally stopping. The dragon was still nowhere to be seen, but that was a good sign, because...

    Bagon was caught!

Ralph unfroze, as Beedrill came down to stand next to her. She tried to calm down, and keep her thoughts on how proud she was of Edgy for finally evolving into such a strong looking pokémon. But her focus was only on the other girl and the pokéball she held in her hand now. Ari had caught the strong Bagon, instead of Ralph. She supposed that she had told her it was okay, earlier. But that was before Bagon had broken out of the pokéball once. And before Ralph had entered the battle herself, via Kakuna and Beedrill.

She would have been allowed to catch it too now, for sure. But Ari won. Ralph didn't say anything, because she couldn't find the right words. Instead, she just turned to pet Edgy on his buggy head in silence.

Without even trying to get back up, Arianne looked towards Ralph, her face only one or two inches away from the rocky terrain. Her smile of satisfaction quickly turned to a frown, however, when she realized the way the other girl was behaving.

After being kind to Ralph and asking her for permission to catch Bagon, mashing her PokéBall in its face like that wasn't really a good example of coherence. But at the same time, Bagon could have hurt itself even more by jumping off the cliff. The same cliff Arianne was standing on the edge of.

The same cliff that was starting to shake under her weight!

Despite the seething emotions inside of her, Ralph reacted quickly when she felt and heard crackling noises from beneath the other girl. She dashed over and grabbed hold of both Ari's arms at once, without thinking of keeping herself grounded. Luckily for them both, their pokémon weren't stupid. Edgy, Sandsy and Squirtle were all there quickly enough, grabbing Ralph's legs or waist to keep her from falling too. Together, with some effort, they pulled Ari safely up before they all sat down to catch their breath.

"You never think before you do things, do you," Ralph said in between breaths. She didn't sound angry though, rather almost amused.

"Yeah…" Arianne replied, sighing. "Thanks, to all of you!"

"Yeah, thanks," Ralph added towards the pokémon with a small laugh. "Good reflexes, good thinking." Then she faced Ari's eyes, and remembered what had transpired before. Her smile tensed up, and faded slightly.

"I-I just wanted to stop Bagon from getting hurt even more." That was the best excuse Arianne could find, after seeing Ralph's face turn more serious… again. "I'm sorry I put you in danger again, like back in Cerulean."

The black haired girl didn't speak of anything else on her mind though. Not about how she was so upset after the encounter with the masked trainer, not about how she needed to win more fights… not about how she behaved with Ralph just then!

That made Ralph think back on their river adventure and realize something. It was Ari who put Ralph in that situation. Her plan. Sure, she could have refused to take the risk and try to battle the brutes at the bridge instead, but… it was still Ari's plan that had almost made Ralph drown. And yet, Ralph had been thinking of it as Ari saving her life.

"Good luck with that," she said, not able to prevent a sharp tone from slipping through. "You two are perfect for each other."

She got up and swiftly returned Sandsy and Edgy to their pokéballs. "I'm gonna go look for more pokémon," she then said, without looking at Ari.

"Is something wrong?" the other girl asked. Not very kindly anymore, to tell the truth: Arianne, if anything, sounded serious and rather upset to see her friend try to leave like that. She made some questionable choices, including the Heal Pulse on Bagon, but at least tried to apologize. And, of all people, she didn't expect that kind of behavior from Ralph.

But Ralph didn't answer immediately, instead turning around to leave.

    "Ralph!" Arianne called out.

The other girl stopped in her tracks and fought conflicting thoughts within herself. Ari really sounded true to herself here. She hadn't wished anything bad onto Ralph. And… It's perfectly possible that her only thought when throwing herself over the cliff after Bagon had been to protect the stupid little dragon from hurting itself even more. That was so typical Ari.

    But still.

She sighed and turned around slightly. "I lied. Before. I wanted the Bagon too. I'm just gonna go look for another one." As if she had any realistic chance of finding two in the same day. Mostly she just wanted to put some space between herself and everybody else right now.

"Alright, I understand. But… this is my Bagon now." Arianne replied. Ralph had been honest with her, and she had to do the same. "I can't give up on it like this. All I can do is wish you good luck."

With tearful eyes - Arianne probably hurt Ralph more than needed by not choosing less harsh words - she continued: "I'll have to heal it and get going. I already know, Rock Tunnel will be difficult."

Ralph clenched her jaw for a moment before she spoke again. "Come on, then. Let's keep going before it gets too dark."

Eventually Arianne and Ralph reached yet again the main path. The black haired girl tried to take some dust off her clothes and, still slightly puzzled by Ralph's different reactions, started to talk once more.

"I'm from Cinnabar, remember? Take tourists away and we're just a little town in the middle of the sea. And when people disagree, or start fighting, there's no running away because you're all stuck in the same island."

Ralph clenched her fist where she was walking. Hearing some righteous goody two-shoes advice was not what she was in the mood for right now.

"And so that is why" Arianne explained "I try to be myself every time, and be honest about the way I feel."
Arianne continued after some heavy breathing. "So please, if something's bothering you, let me know! We can figure out a solution without losing trust of each other!"

Maybe it wasn't the best speech she'd ever given, but Arianne felt like it was genuine enough. All of this, as the two girls kept walking down the path.

Sadly, the strongest thought inside Ralph after that was: So annoying. All she felt like doing right now was to get away, not have a heart-to-heart. It almost overwhelmed her wish to see Ari safely to the next pokémon center. Even though she definitely didn't owe the reckless girl that. Wasn't Ralph just the kindest soul to do it anyways?

"I'll let you know," she quipped, even though she didn't mean what she said. She thought saying it like that would make her feel better, but it really didn't. And it was only at that point that Arianne realized, Ralph wasn't going to cooperate that much. And that forcing other people to talk about how they feel isn't a good idea.

Instead, an awkward silence settled between the girls as they walked on.

    The Arrival

Keith was starting to breathe heavily just as they were getting closer to their destination. Richard, who was walking in front of him, seemed unfazed as he made sure to follow the directions printed in the map.

"Richard... do you mind... slowing down? I'm not... as strong as you, okay? I… Am human… Need rest." Keith was gasping for air as he tried to stop Richard from walking further before stopping to rest.

"Hm? You're already tired? It's just a couple hours of walking Keith, it's not as bad as you think. Besides, take a look at your surroundings."

"Nothing is weird with the surroundings, It's just rocks and more rocks, Richard!"

Richard facepalmed hearing Keith's response, he couldn't believe that someone so smart could also be so dense. But after all, it was Keith that he was trying to find justification for- rational thinking was not going to answer that question ever. With that in mind, he decided to tell Keith directly instead of beating around the bush.

"No dummy, it's almost dusk. Which means that we are doomed if we don't hurry up."

"Whoa, chill… We couldn't continue the trip with empty stomachs. How about we take a little rest and start cooking, hm?"

    "Absolutely not, we're not--"

Richard's attempt to dissuade Keith was interrupted by a loud growl from his stomach. His face turned a bit red with embarrassment.

"Excuse me, did I just hear an agreement there?" Keith taunted.

"Fine, let's just get this over with…"

Richard and Keith immediately tried to find a potential spot to cook. Even with an empty stomach, comfort was one of the biggest factors that they took into account. Not long after they started searching they found a great spot, but they saw someone already preparing their camp there.

"Smoke… Hmm, judging by the place where they are, I'm pretty sure there's someone there already preparing on that spot before us. Well, we should take a closer look anyway."

Both Keith and Richard approached the site. As they came closer, they spotted a familiar face.

"Oh, that's Casey isn't it? It's been quite a while since I last talked to him… and that guy beside him; I think I've seen him before… Maybe this is a good opportunity to chit-chat while we cook instead of somber silence." Keith cheerfully approached the campers without any hesitation.

"But Keith, what if we are just a nuisance? Keith! Damn…" Richard tried to convey his worries to Keith. His friend didn't care about it and continued his walk while beckoning Richard along.

"Hey Casey, long time, no see!" Keith waved his right arm enthusiastically as he stepped onto the sparse grass. Casey perked up, setting aside the lidded pot he had been fiddling with, while his friend absentmindedly waved, careful not to take his eyes off their makeshift set-up.

"Hi Keith, hi Richard! How's the journey goin'?"

"For me, great! Not for Richard though."

"Well... almost getting killed by an Electrode and then being sent to the hospital, then losing to Keith due to a loophole in the rules, and almost getting crushed by a hiker and his Rhydon in a handicapped match? Not a great day. Well… my Abra evolved, so yeah at least something good happened." Richard tried to console himself.

"Hey, I beat you fair and square, no ifs, no buts." Keith complained.

"Three against two? Real classy there, Keith."

The other boy finally looked up from his dinner preparations, bewildered at the eventful recap and looking as if he had several questions. Casey laughed, distracted by the bickering, then registered Richard's first comment. "Sent to the hospital?"

"Oh, that? I was fighting a masked man back in Cerulean. In the end, he used his Gabite to Sand Tomb me and made my leg stuck before he sent his Electrode to explode in front of me. No big deal haha…"

"Wow… Really no big deal there, Pal." Keith started to clap sarcastically.

"Geez, you starting to understand sarcasm eh, Keith?" Richard was surprised at Keith's response. After all, he was never the type to be conscious with jokes. He began to think that maybe his habit of using sarcasm against Keith had started to backfire.

"Obviously, I learn from the best." Keith grinned widely.

    "Damn it, Keith…"

The two campers exchanged baffled looks. Casey shook it off first, murmuring mostly to himself: "That's four of us, huh?"

Keith was baffled because of the words Casey let out. "Four? What do you mean by four?"

"Uh, well, me, Bruno," Casey made a vague gesture toward his friend. "Jordan... and now Richard. We all ran into the same people. I mean, probably the same people. Similar things, similar costumes."

"Dang, that can't be good…" Richard bit the nail of his right thumb. If what Casey said was true then there was an organized evil group in the region. The fact that they stole the powerful dragon-types didn't help either. What were they going to do with it? Crush a rival organization, or… they could be using it to terrorize innocent people and further their agenda?

"If I caught that guy last time… There would be more clues now…" Richard seemed to be agonizing over the fact that he let the guy escape.

"That's not our job," Casey said, rather bluntly. "I was lucky to make it out alive, and it sounds like the rest of us were too. We told the police what we saw, and that's all we can do."

"Yeah," Jordan shrugged, probably a bit too casually considering the topic they were discussing. "Can't expect a ragtag bunch of fresh-out-of-school kids to put a stop to organized crime. Just relax!"

"Besides," Casey added, picking up his bag of rice, "we're out of Cerulean now. Don't have to worry about it."

"Casey got a point there, Pal. You shouldn't think too much about that, there are more pressing matters right now." Keith gave Richard one of the bags he was carrying. "You know, the problem of our empty stomachs? Haha. Get to working, sous-chef." Keith teased Richard.

"Fine, fine… I'll talk with you guys later then." Richard prepped the cooking station for the spaghetti, pulling out all of the necessary items including the portable stove. He then moved his focus towards preparing the mushrooms and herbs needed for the spaghetti. From across the campsite, he could hear Casey saying, "Look, Jordan, I'm just going to hold it like this. It's got a handle." Richard didn't know what that was about, so he busied himself with the task ahead of him.

Route 9, Wednesday May 22nd, late afternoon

The sun was lowering in the sky, and Ralph plowed on. She had left any semblance of the main road behind, but knew where the sun was and in what direction she should be going in relation to it. Once it set though... She would be lost. Really not the most cleverest idea. But then again, she wasn't thinking straight right now.

Her blood was still pumping as she pressed onwards. All her pokémon were inside of their pokéballs, as she really didn't feel like having anybody at all around right now. She was angry - with Ari? With herself? And she wanted to wallow in it, which she was finally free to do after she had left Ari's company... She let the dark feelings embrace her and carry her forwards through the rocky terrain.

She passed by some trees and was suddenly startled by a movement up ahead. But it was a tiny creature. No blue, rare dragon. Just a Rattata. It had a vibrant, purple fur, not unlike her own hair, and its big eyes glimmered in a greenish tone in what little of the late sunlight that reached them. It sat down and just sniffed at Ralph when it spotted her.

Ralph sighed, and fell to her knees. Finally, she allowed herself to stop and rest for a moment. Not that it really helped with her mood.

"Isn't that just splendid," she muttered. "Ari finds a dragon, and I find a rat."

The rat leaned its head to the side, and carefully scuttled up to her. She paid it no attention. Until something touched her leg, and she glanced that way. A small, ripe Oran berry was lying next to her. A meter away, the Rattata was sittting, now looking at the human expectantly.

"I don't need pity," Ralph said quickly with a frown, but realized that this little Rattata probably thought she was physically hurt and just wanted to help her. What a good guy. "I mean. Thanks."

She reached for the berry, but another noise made her stop her movement. A loud growl. It didn't come from the Rattata, and it really didn't sound friendly. She looked around, to try and find the source of it.

Too late. The source was already leaping for her. She saw it only as a moving shadow from something coming from behind, before a loud thud was heard. When she finally spun around, and scooted backwards to try to get away, she realized what was going on.

A red and grey pokémon had tried to jump at her from a cliff, but the small Rattata had saved her by Tackling it. The Rattata now ran back to stand guard in front of Ralph, while the malicious pokémon got up as well, looking quite angry. Still on the ground, Ralph reached for her pokédex and scanned the opponent.

"Lycanroc," she gasped. "Midnight forme. Rock type. Those aren't really nice pokémon."

The green eyed Rattata met the wolf's growl with one of its own, although it was more squeaky than anything. Rattata seemed like a nice pokémon. But it probably couldn't take on a rock type on its own. Ralph couldn't really understand why it would want to take care of her like this. Maybe it was a mother or father, and used to caring for weaker Rattatas? Did it think Ralph was a Rattata just because her hair was purple? The girl almost chuckled at that, but her small joy was cut short by the Lycanroc lunging for them again. This time, Ralph grabbed Rattata before it could try to defend, and rolled away with it in her arms. Again, thanks martial arts studies.

Lycanroc somehow anticipated their evasion though, and changed direction midways. Its assault didn't become as powerful then as initially, but it would still have inflicted quite some damage to Ralph if Rattata hadn't pressed itse3lf out from Ralph's grasp and suddely Tail Whipped the wolf on its nose in what must have been a quite elegantly timed move for an onlooker.

"Alright!" Ralph gasped as she scrambled to her feet. "Seems you want a fight. I'll give you a more fair one. Coldy, go!"

The Alolan Sandshrew emerged from her pokéball and faced Lycanroc with a stare as calm and focused as ice itself. Lycanroc merely smiled when faced with this new opponent, which should have worried Ralph. But her anger from before was begging for release, and she was nowhere near as calm as Coldy now. The wolf Howled loudly, and the sound made the blood curl in Ralph's veins. She wasn't going to let it power itself up too much.

    "Coldy, Powder Snow!"

The Sandshrew swiftly obeyed and launched a flurry of powder snow at the wild pokémon. It whined at the contact - rock types didn't appreciate the cold - but didn't flinch noticeably. Recovering faster than Ralph expected, Lycanroc next launched a couple of medium sized rocks in the air towards Coldy, who was struck hard and rolled backwards, nearly to the edge of another ledge. This landscape really was tricky to battle in.

"Where did those rocks come from?" Ralph thought out loud. "Can it just conjure them?"

Lycanroc wasted no time. It was already hurling even more boulders in Coldy's direction, and they landed around her as if forming a tight cage, making it impossible for her to escape if the Lycanroc was to hurl even more boulders now. Unless...

"Bide!" Ralph called out, and Coldy obeyed and started storing her energy in a defensive stance.

Lycanroc ran up to the rock cage and reached down to Bite the Sandshrew. Unfortunately, its icy shell was so hard that it probably hurt the wolf as much as it hurt the armadillo.

"Now!" Ralph ordered, and the well trained Sandshrew punched back at Lycanroc before it could properly retreat, inflicting some damage to its head. The wolf backed off and shook its head with muttering noises.

"You gotta get out of there!" Ralph said and ran up to grab Coldy's paw.

Together, they managed to have her climb out of the tight rock tomb. But they hadn't been paying enough attention to their opponent. Lycanroc was advancing on them again, looking more angry than ever, raising its claw...

Only to stop, and blink while looking downwards. The small Rattata was sitting there, and actually smiled up at the other wild pokémon.

"Careful!" Ralph called out, and Coldy readied another Powder Snow.

But Lycanroc didn't attack this time, instead, it leaned down, and picked up something that was lying in front of Rattata, as if the rat had offered it. Ralph raised her eyebrows when she saw what it was. The Oran Berry. Lycanroc spent a few seconds glancing between the others with suspicion, before it munched down the berry fast, and scurried off in between the trees without another growl or anything.

Coldy stood down when she felt Ralph ease up and let out a big breath.

    "It was just... hungry?"

Rattata squeaked happily in response as it smiled up at her with its twinkling, green eyes. In perfect timing, Ralph's stomach let out a loud noise that went on for several seconds.

"I suppose I am too," she noted, before kneeling down before the rat. "You're pretty clever. I'm sorry for thinking you were a worse find than a Bagon. Would you... Maybe like to come with me? Be part of my team?"

She really hadn't planned on catching a common Rattata. But life didn't always go as planned. And it had both brain cells and guts, which was quite valuable.

Rattata didn't immediately jump at the idea, and its smile faded a bit. But then it stood up and barked at Ralph with a determined look. Well, bark was the closest word she could put on the sound at least.

    "Is that a yes or?"

Rattata growled now, and bumped Ralph's foot with its head half hard.

"Oh... You want a battle. So if I defeat you, you'll join me?"

A nod was the response. Alright then. Ralph's stomach growled again, and she noticed that the sunlight was noticeably weaker now, but she decided to accept this anyways.

    "Coldy, are you ready?"

The Alolan Sandshrew regained her icy stare, now focused on her tiny new opponent. That was a definitive yes, at least.

"Okay, ready yourself, little friend," Ralph said with a grin. "Here we come. Ice Ball!"

Coldy wrapped herself up as a ball, glowing with cold energy, and rolled quickly towards the rat. But Rattata swiftly evaded the move with what could have been Quick Attack, and retaliated from the side, knocking Coldy off track and causing her to unfold.

"Huh, clever. But not enough! Next, use Powder Snow!"

Coldy was quickly back up on her feet, and fired off snow jets in Rattata's direction. The rat was quick and tried to avoid this attack too, but didn't quite manage to. The cold snow layer that formed on the ground made it move slower. As Coldy let up, Rattata stopped, and its body seemed to vibrate for a second - a cold shudder? - before it suddenly seemed to glow with a red energy for a second. Oh, that wasn't a shudder. It could have been a move. Ralph grasped her pokédex, who told her it was indeed Focus Energy. Rattata's next attacks might before more critical now.

    "Watch out Cold- Oh!"

When Ralph had looked down at her pokédex, Rattata had taken the opportunity to act. Coldy, as quick as she was to follow orders, seldom acted on her own, and just took the attack this time. It was a Tackle, and it hit her head on and caused her to slide backwards in the snow layer.

"Ouch, sneaky," Ralph commented, even though she knew she had only her own lack of attention to blame. She noticed Coldy was getting tired after her battle with Lycanroc and now Rattata, even though the pokémon tried not to let it show. She doubted she'd be happy if she switched her out, however.

But Rattata came with another Quick Attack that struck Coldy head on, and now she was almost rolling over the edge of the plateau they were fighting on. No good.

"Sorry," Ralph muttered as she returned Coldy to her pokéball. "You're great, but it's unfair to let you tire yourself out in two battles in a row out in the wilderness like this. As for you," she added, turning back to the Rattata. "My whole strength is my whole team, and since Coldy had to face two opponents, so will you. Edgy, go!"

Her Beedrill came out of its pokéball, buzzing in the air and refreshed after having rested in his pokéball. He looked around for a strong opponent to smash, but when all he saw was the puny Rattata, he gave Ralph a disappointed stare.

"Don't be like that," Ralph urged. "This little dude beat a Lycanroc and a Sandshrew already. Aren't you better than them?"

Questioning his power always worked on Edgy, of course. He turned back towards Rattata and commenced attacking before Ralph even uttered an order. She threw her hands up in the air with a shrug as the Twineedle connected easily with the small Rattata - probably more from it being surprised than anything.

"Okay, keep going then with Fury Attack! Don't let the rat escape you!" she called out though, although she suspected the Beedrill might have kept going like that anyways if she had stayed silent.

Edgy jabbed his lancers quickly at Rattata, half walking, half flying and rather easily keeping the rat from being able to run away. But the rat suddenly used the move from before again, managing to get a Tail Whip hit in on Beedrill, right in the face. It confounded the bee and made it stagger backwards. In the process, Rattata took the opportunity to use Quick Attack and run around to strike Beedrill from behind.

Or, it would have, if Ralph hadn't foreseen that.

"String Shot backwards!" she called out the instant she saw the Tail Whip.

Edgy wasn't sure of what he saw or what was happening, but as he trusted Ralph rather blindly by now, he just turned around and sprayed his icky string. It hit the target perfectly, and Rattata became jammed to the ground by the incapacitating thread.

"Aha!" Ralph said and came to stand and lean over the Rattata, Beedrill next to her with his stinger aimed at Rattata's head. "Do you give up?"

Rattata looked fiercely from one to the other, but instead of nodding, it started trying to gnaw itself out of the String Shot mess. It would have worked, if Edgy hadn't decided to go ahead and Poison Sting the rat in its ribs after all. That hit was the last drop, and Rattata fainted.

Ralph shook her head. "That wasn't necessary. Poison moves... Not really fair fighting." But she gave Edgy an appreciative pet on his head anyways before taking out an empty pokéball and touching it to the fainted Rattata's head. It didn't take much effort for the ball to close around it and successfully capture it.

"Quite some fight in this one. Maybe rare pokémon aren't always better," Ralph murmured to herself as she held the ball up in the faint evening light.

That made her think of Ari and the Bagon, and the camp they had reached again. Her stomach was aching now. Maybe she shouldn't have left them... But she had made her choice. And she hadn't really been a good friend. At all. Ari deserved better.

Upset with herself again, Ralph kept walking east, Edgy buzzing lazily above her.

    3-5: Dining Disaster // May 22nd; Evening

"Geez, I know that you guys have an 'innovative' way of cooking, but can't you just light up some branches with your Charmander's fire instead of whatever you guys are doing?" Keith said, amusement obvious in his voice. He made as if to help them but swung back toward his own station when he heard Richard yelling. "Oh... sorry guys. I wish you luck!"

Jordan gave a small wave as the boy wheeled around. "Thanks, you too!" He considered what Keith said for a few moments as he squatted back down next to Casey. "You know, maybe he has a point…"

"This will work!" Casey insisted, even as he shifted to brace his elbows against his thighs. "I'm not getting hot this way, so I just gotta keep it here. Besides, did you see any decent firewood 'round here? I didn't."

Jordan sighed. "True. We already cooked those cans this way, don't see why the rice won't work." He craned his neck to get a better view of Richard and Keith's station. "Maybe they'll be willing to swap some of their spaghetti for some of our… this."

"How'd they even bring all the ingredients for spaghetti out here?"

Jordan shrugged. "How'd you lug a whole family-sized bag of rice out here? Speaking of…" He lifted the pot lid slightly and peered in to check on the progress of their meal. "I guess we should focus on our own thing first."

After a few minutes Casey lay down, planting his elbows firmly into the rocky ground to support his hands. The pot shook slightly, just barely above Pepper's tail. Casey's face being practically in the dirt was apparently not enough to stop him from running his mouth. Jordan only tuned in for the tail end of it.

"I think my wrists are going numb. It's probably that nerve in my elbows, right? The one that goes all the way through… oh, the ulnar nerve. Yeah. It's not nice. Jordan, this is getting really hard…"

Jordan giggled to himself, but decided not to elaborate when he saw Casey's mildly scandalized expression. He stopped and cleared his throat. "Here, want me to help? You take a break."

"Yeah, lemme-" Casey told the dirt. It took some creative maneuvering to shimmy himself back into a seated position without removing the pot from the flame, but he managed it eventually. "Alright, here."

Jordan clumsily reached around Casey to grab the pot's handle. The pot was heavier than he had anticipated, and… he ended up dropping it directly onto Pepper's tail, which flared up in pain and surprise. The three vanished in a cloud of steam and smoke as the stench of burnt rice wafted across the campsite.

    Afternoon, Route 9

Artemis slashed the eye of an enraged (and apparently hungry) Spearow defending from an upcoming Peck. The bird Pokémon shrieked and flew back with the rest of the flock, and two more Spearow plummeted against her. Artemis received one of them with another Fury Cutter, and that Pokémon repeated the same action as the previous Spearow, but the other one hit her and started attacking her on the floor.

"Bumblebee, use-!" before Bruno could finish his sentence, the Psychic-Type sprang up and fell on the attacking Spearow.

Bruno ran to his two Pokémon with a Potion in hand he attempted to spray on Artemis, but she hissed at him when he tried to get close to her and instead ran against another angry Flying-type, landing an uppercut while it was still on the air.

Three more Spearow were on the way, and they seemed to be after Artemis.

"There are too many, use Leafage to drive them away!", he ordered, but Artemis didn't listen. She stood there in an attack position waiting for them to get closer and welcome them by spinning and hitting two of them with her blades, while the other one missed. The third Spearow attacked her and made her fall on her back.

"Bounce!" Bruno said to his other Pokémon, and Bumblebee attempted to obey, but a fast attack followed by a sharp hiss knocked the Bounce Pokémon down.

Artemis stood in front of him as if saying "This is my fight!", and that's when Bruno finally realized what was going on: She was angry at him, yes, but that wasn't all. Artemis was a competitive spirit and if his memory served him right, all of the battles she had been on so far didn't end good for her. Artemis was feeling powerless and with the need of showing her true strength, and no trainer nor "ally" Pokémon would get in her way now. It was her moment to show what she was really capable of.

"Stop!" Artemis didn't listen and instead went to attack the third Spearow she missed before.

"I know you're strong, I mean it! But this is not the way to go about it, not now." he said, Artemis turned her look at him, but quickly focused back on her opponent. "At least let us help you there!" She continued moving on her own. Another slash on theSpearow and it fled just as the other ones. Three more Spearow were coming.

"Artemis, please!" she didn't care and kept attacking the Spearow instead. One Fury Cutter over here and another Fury Cutter over there, one of the Spearow fainted, but the other two stayed on the battlefield. They shrieked repeatedly trying to intimidate the Grass-type, while another, bigger Spearow went to attack her from the sky. Artemis tried to counter, but she missed and the wild Pokémon managed to hit her with a Peck.

Artemis stepped back, trying to protect herself from the wild Spearow's attack to no avail. She was hurt and very weak, but she still wouldn't listen to Bruno's commands.

"Bumble!" the Psychic-type looked back at his trainer and nodded before he could give and order. The bounce Pokémon Bounced at the big Spearow with enough strength to distract it. The bird Pokémon turned its attention towards the Spoink and went after it instead.

While 'Bumble' distracted the Spearow, Bruno went to Artemis with the another Potion. Artemis growled at him, but Bruno refused to back off this time.

"You did great." he said while he sprayed the Potion on her. "Really, you took seven or more Spearow all by yourself and even knocked one down…" The Pokémon was still shaking, but her growls calmed down after Bruno said that. "... but you can't take on them all. I'm your trainer after all… maybe a terrible one, but let me and Bumble help you here, okay? We can beat these Spearow together." Artemis backed off with bewilderment and rubbed her arms as if she was trying to hone her blades.

The Spearow was each time getting closer to Bumblebee, and at the same time closer to Bruno and Artemis. The Grass-type got up and got ready for a last attack, she looked at Bruno and nodded.

"Get ready." Artemis prepared her attack and was now waiting for his command and Bumble was each time getting slower. "Bumblebee, jump!" When Bumble got close enough to Artemis, he jumped as high as possible. The Spearow reduced its speed to follow the Pokémon up, but Artemis struck it by swinging its arm and knocked it out.

Artemis hissed at the other two Spearow that shrieked at her before and they shrieked back and fled. Was that some kind of Roar? Bruno didn't remember she know that-

Bumblebee, who was looking back at where Katherine was, pulled Bruno's clothes to draw his attention. A cloud of white steam was rising from the burrow they found before, but the steam was quickly overshadowed by another cloud of dust. A horde of Zigzagoon appeared before them, running from the burrow. Bumblebee jumped to a nearby rock, and Bruno took Artemis to avoid her being dragged away by the scared Zigzagoon until everything calmed down.

"What was th-- ouch!" Artemis bit his hand in her struggle to get free from his hands. Bruno put her down, or more like, she jumped off. "Come on now, are you still angry?"

Artemis looked away with her arms crossed.

"Look, I'm sorry for what happened just now, for waking you up like three times, and everything else. Really." she still had her arms crossed and refused to move. "You really did great out there. You're very strong and I'm an idiot." Artemis nodded at that last remark. "Now Bumble has to find his pearl, and you're the only one that can get it back… and I need your strength for this journey too. So will you come with us?"

Artemis exchanged various looks with the Psychic-type and her trainer. She nodded a bit disconcerted and tried to climb up to Bruno's shoulders, but Bruno ended helping her with that and got another nip on his hand because of it.

Back at the burrow, Katherine and her Koffing were still there, with Muffin resting on Katherine's arms, but there was no pearl. Her Croagunk was still inside the burrow, which implied that there was another Zigzagoon inside that had what they were looking for.

Chapter 3 - Vera Arrives and Takes Over
    Route 9, May 22nd

Making her way down the road, Vera noticed a makeshift campsite just off the beaten path. Now, normally she'd avoid such a place, especially when she hadn't been invited, but the cry of pain, the cloud of steam, and the smell of burnt food bothered her a little. She made her way over to the campsite, stopping a few feet away from the spectacle with her hands on her hips. "What's all this, then? And what are you doing to that poor Charmander?"

The scorched pot was on its side, with one of the culprits desperately trying to salvage bits of "clean" rice that had spilled into the dirt. His partner in crime was more concerned about apologizing to and comforting his Pokémon than the inevitable cleanup. He cuddled Charmander to his chest as he glanced toward Vera.

"Uh, hi Vera. We're tryna cook dinner! But I can't hold the pot up long enough."

Vera was dumbfounded at the explanation. "Hold the pot up… You're going to burn yourself, you fool. And your sleeve is on fire." Something about these two seemed familiar. Vera got the strangest feeling she'd ignored them before. The boy set the Charmander down with deliberation before frantically throwing himself on the ground to roll in the dirt.

The other boy stood up and turned to face Vera. His face turned pink when he saw her, and as soon as he found his words, he immediately threw his friend under the bus. "Y-yeah, Casey. I told him this was a stupid idea…"

Casey, slightly charred but no longer on fire, pointed an accusing finger at his friend. "Ah?! And having a Grass-type hold a can over a flame was what, Jordan?"

"Shh! Shut up!" Jordan whispered back hoarsely, giving Casey a shove. "Work with me here."

"What- this? This again? Ugh, fine." Casey hissed before turning the volume up to address Vera. "Yes, this was entirely my idea and my fault, Jordan is the ever-present voice of reason in my life, I would have fallen off a cliff and died three hours ago were it not for his selfless intervention, this happens to me on a daily basis and Jordan is a saint to manage me."

Ignoring the heavy sarcasm in his voice, Jordan flashed a smile at Vera, but his blushing did not go away.

Vera sighed, at a loss for how hopeless these boys were. "Clearly you need someone with experience in this area, or at least common sense. Do you even have a fire, or have you been making Charmander do all the work?"

"We lost our matches." Casey offered from the ground. "But Pepper doesn't mind! He's got lots of energy to burn. ...Haha, burn. Anyway, we were doin' okay 'til… I dropped it."

Their story made sense, but not much. Noticing some tents and a couple others nearby, Vera surmised that an impromptu campground was being set up. Seeing an opportunity, she decided to make the most of it. "Fine, I'll help you. But you'll do as I say and I get a share of the food, understood?"

"Sure! What do we do first?"

Vera put a hand to her chin, thinking back to her childhood when her Dad took her camping in their backyard. "First we'll need a proper fire pit. If Charmander here doesn't mind being the flame…" she bent to pet Pepper's head, indulging in a slight amount of baby talk, "And being so helpful in making dinner. We need rocks. About three or four should do, enough to rest the pot on. So you don't have to hold it. Roughly the same size, so it sits level, and big enough to fit the fire under."

Pepper preened under the attention. Casey, even before Vera finished her instructions, made for the stream. "There's rocks over here! C'mon, Jordan, help me!"

"Right! Don't worry, Vera, we are on it. I'll uh, go with him in case he needs help carrying those back." Jordan bolted after Casey. They hovered near the stream together, a mimed search for appropriately-sized rocks covering their hurried whispers.

"Right, how are you tryna to impress her and what d'you need from me?" Casey asked, toeing a decent-looking rock out of place and gesturing at it inquisitively.

"Yeah, that one and maybe these two should be good. Okay, now pretend to struggle." Jordan whispered back.

Casey let his fingers slip along the edges of the rock as he raised his voice. "This is a good one! Oh, man, this rock is super heavy! Jordan, can you get this one?" A muttered "can you get this one?" earned him a glare.

"Which, this?" Jordan's response was equally over-exaggerated. "Yeah, that's not a problem. I got it." They repeated the charade with the other rocks, and soon enough a nice ring of stones sat firmly in front of Vera and Pepper.

Vera watched them from a distance, already getting exasperated by their tomfoolery. But, she couldn't help but smile at how readily they followed her ord- er, instructions. She looked to the spilled rice, noticing how that was all there was in the pot. "So, we have rice. A wonderful base for a meal, but a little lacking on its own. What else do you have?" Her own bag was mainly trail food, not really meal material.

"Ah! Well, we did do a bit of… cooking before you got here." Jordan said brightly. Although he was fairly proud of what they managed to do with the materials they had earlier, after her initial reaction, he had a feeling she wasn't going to be quite so impressed. He and Casey brought out the leaky cans they prepared earlier, and set them in front of a horrified Vera. "See, we got some tomatoes, and beans…"

"No. Just… no." Vera scowled at the cans. "Is that the best you have? Why are they leaking? What are they leaking? Never mind, I don't want to know." She let out a frustrated breath, composing herself. "Look, these hills are full of edible things. Nuts, berries, wild herbs, I don't expect you to find fish or anything, but… Just go forage something, I'll make this into a pilaf." She set the pot on the rocks, scratching Pepper's head as he got into position.

"Oh, and look for mushrooms, if you can. Get some protein in this meal. Just make sure they aren't poisonous, please. Actually, make very sure they aren't poison. Better safe than sorry…" She focused on the pot, coaxing Pepper to heat the water.

"Don't worry! Jordan knows basically everything about plants."

"Yeah, leave it to me! No one is dying from mushroom poisoning on my watch." Jordan lowered his voice as he turned to Casey. "You know mushrooms are fungi, right?"

"Let me be colloquial, garden boy," Casey muttered as the two made their way back out to the road.

  • Gwen had been walking through Route 9 since she left Cerulean City at noon. Needless to say, she was exhausted. She stubbornly thought she could make it to Rock Tunnel by this point in time if she just kept walking, but after wearing her legs out she was just about ready to collapse. Normally she'd never even consider walking this much, but just seeing all the Pokémon wildlife around here motivated her to see it all. At this point though, she wouldn't have given a damn if an entire Groudon rounded the corner.

As she slowly continued to strut forward she noticed a campsite and all Gwen could do was daydream about how much she wanted to chill out and make some curry. Lost in thought, she didn't even realize someone was jogging her way. It was likely he wasn't paying too much attention either as he bumped right into her, knocking Gwen on her rear.

"Man, watch where you're going!" a voice called out, simultaneous with Gwen's involuntary outburst of "GAH, WHAT THE F- WHAT WHERE AM I?"

"Casey, I swear…" A tall, red-haired boy jogged up to where Gwen and his friend collided. He gave the other boy a quick smack on the head, eliciting an over-dramatic complaint, before extending an arm to Gwen to help her up. She had never seen these people in her life and just nervously stared at the boy despite his offer. He drew his hand back awkwardly, slightly embarrassed.

The other boy chimed in. "Yeah, sorry- oh, Gwen! Hi! We're setting up camp kinda behind those trees and there's lots of space; wanna join? We're goin' foraging right now but there's a few other people from Cape back there!"

It seemed a bit too perfect- she was just thinking about how tired and hungry she was and now someone she apparently went to school with was inviting her to camp.

"Uh… yeah, sure!" She felt safe enough around other students, so why not? The boys jogged off in the opposite direction with a wave as she headed over at a pace faster than her usual. Even if she was shy, she was still a little excited to meet new people- plus, a good opportunity to bust out the curry pot.

Not atypical for Gwen, when she actually got to the campsite she didn't say a word to anyone; at most, she just gave a slight wave to those who greeted her. Even if she did want to meet new people, being surrounded by as much as three people at a time would make her uncomfortable enough to the point she would stay closed up to herself.

Of course she couldn't keep sitting around like this- she was very hungry, after all. Regardless of her fears of groups of people, she started unpacking her curry supplies containing a large pot, some mixing spoons, curry powder, a pack of sausages, a bag of rice, a cutting board with a small knife and four paddle fans with patterns of Gengar, Emboar, Lickitung, and Snorunt on them respectively.

  • Vera Hill, Pepper Bomb
    Chapter 3 - Cooking Dinner
    Route 9, May 22nd

Vera looked at the Charmander by her feet, who looked back at her. It seemed to trust her, despite being another trainer's Pokemon. She had always thought she'd like to raise a Fire type, maybe it could tell? "Casey said your name is Pepper, right?"

Charmander nodded, his fiery tail wagging slightly at hearing his name. It was so cute Vera couldn't help but smile.

"Okay, Pepper. We're going to try cooking over your flame again, alright? But this time we'll be smart about it." She set the pot back up on the stones Jordan had brought her, adding the rice and water. "Heat, please."

Pepper lay down by the rocks, putting his tail flame directly under the pot. He looked out over the road, considering taking a nap. But Vera wasn't about to let him.

"We want this done today, Pepper. This water needs to boil, and you're giving me a pilot light. Put some effort into it!"

Pepper looked up in surprise, having expected this to be easy. Vera looked serious, and Pepper considered taking her seriously. He lifted his tail slightly, putting the fire closer to the pot.

"Not what I meant. Your flame is too small to effectively heat this pot. You absolutely scorched it earlier, so I know you can do better." She'd never trained a Fire type before, so this was purely speculation, but she figured he could control the intensity of his flame. "Make your fire bigger. Put some pep in your step!"

Pepper shrugged, giving it a shot. He thought about breathing fire in battle, and where that fire came from. The energy was inside him, and reaching for it made his tail flame react, growing larger and hotter.

Vera grinned, excited that it was working. Cooking over a burner was nothing new, but she'd need to figure out how to adjust the heat on a living one. "Nice job! But we don't want to burn the pot again. So it's not just about heat, it's about control." More speculation, but she had been given similar advice once, to help her manage her anxiety. "Your fire's all over right now. Focus on it, keep it steady, keep it even."

Pepper growled a little, focusing on the metaphorical fire in his heart and the literal fire in his belly. Normally, breathing fire involved pushing that fire up and out, the tail flame being mainly a byproduct of the process. Here, he was pushing it down, slow and steady, directly into his tail.

Vera chuckled at Pepper, amused at how cute he was. He was trying so hard. "You're just a coiled spring right now, aren't you? Yeah." She rubbed his head, but he didn't seem to appreciate it as much now. "You're like a muscle. Like a big arm muscle, just flexing."

Pepper moved under Vera's hands, trying to get her to stop touching him. He cried out indignantly, finding it hard to focus.

Vera stepped back, putting her hands up. "Fine, sorry. Moody. You want to work, we'll work. Center yourself, nice and easy. We want consistent heat, spread it out a little. Nice and even."

Pepper focused on his fire, finding the spark and feeling the heat. He pushed in on that spark, spreading the heat through his body. The flame on his tail stopped flickering, becoming steady again without becoming smaller. That warmth was comforting, and felt good. Pepper kept his mind on that warmth, feeling the heat in every part of him.

He was doing well, and had managed to get a nice flame going. Vera was about to congratulate him, but noticed his expression. Pepper was "in the zone", all of his attention on keeping his tail steady, probably. And then his flame got bigger, and golden light suffused his whole body. "Wait, what's going- oh. Oh, this is not what I expected!" Vera jumped up, grabbing the pot as energy spread from Pepper.

    Spoiler:

Pepper's body shifted within the light, growing and stretching. When it faded, the little Charmander had become a bigger, more powerful Charmeleon! He let out a breath, finding it easy to maintain a steady flame now. Something about his voice caught his attention, and he looked at himself in surprise. He grinned at Vera, proud of himself and wanting her to be proud of him, too.

"Hey, look at you!" Vera put the pot back down, then scratched at Pepper's chin. "You must have been right on the edge, buddy. I didn't think it happened like that, but here we are. So much stronger now! Yes you are!"

Pepper grinned, poking at Vera's stomach as if to tease her for doubting. His claws were much bigger and sharper than he was used to, and he inadvertently ripped a hole in her shirt.

"Hey!" She stepped back, feeling flustered and holding her flannel shirt closed to hide the tear. It was small, but had been too close for comfort. "Watch it, those are sharp!"

Pepper admired his claws, slashing at the air and posing. He was clearly having fun, enjoying his new body.

Vera buttoned her shirt shut, effectively hiding the damage. "Okay, that's enough goofing around. We have dinner to make, so keep that fire going."

Pepper scoffed, exhaling a bit of fire. He was feeling way too good to be concerned for Vera, but lay down by the cooking pot like she asked. "Just keep it steady." she instructed, and he was happy to oblige.

Chapter 3, Part 6: The Pearl

    Afternoon, Route 9 (5:10 pm - 5:30 pm)

    "Any luck here?"

Katherine shook her head. "No. Well, kinda… Muffin is back and many of the Zigzagoon got out because of Al's Clear Smog, but… Thea and the pearl are still inside."

Bruno got on his knees and tried looking inside the burrow, but he couldn't see anything even with the white steam dissipating almost completely.

"Got a flashlight?" she said. "I… had one in my bag, but…" she grinned nervously and chuckled. "I forgot it at… at… there, at the camp"

Bruno sighed. He put Artemis on the ground and took his bag off. He had a small flashlight, it didn't really illuminate much, but whatever worked to be able to differentiate between the pearl, the Croagunk and the rest of the burrow was okay, he guessed.

Bruno could look at Thea almost clearly, even with the cloud not totally dissipated. She was pulling- no, she was fighting with another Pokémon over the pearl.

    "There's something inside."

    "Is Thea okay?"

"Yeah… I think so. But she needs help." Bruno looked back at Artemis, who was looking at him, knowing she had something to do. "Can you go and help the blue Pokémon inside?" she looked at the dark hole at her side, more likely at the white steam. It didn't seem as if she liked Al's Clear Smog, made sense, she was a Grass-type after all.

After a long moment of doubt, the Clear Smog finally died out. Bruno checked again inside the burrow, Thea was still there, pulling the black pearl while a wild Zigzagoon was pulling it back holding it with its teeth. "It's safe to go inside. There's no more white smoke, see?" Artemis was still reluctant to get in. "What happened to the brave Pokémon that took on an entire Spearow flock moments ago?" He thought, clearly confused about what was happening with her.

"Come on there's nothing dangerous inside. You just have to beat that Zigzagoon inside and- hey!" Bumblebee, who apparently everyone forgot was there, got tired of waiting for Artemis to get inside that he pushed her in. Katherine opened her eyes in surprise and covered her mouth trying not to laugh. The Grass-type rolled down the slope that led to the burrow. The two kids were able to listen her sharp hiss coming from down there.

Bruno wasn't sure if Bumblebee really wanted his pearl back, or if that was a payback for the time Artemis attacked him back there. Whatever it was, she would definitely be angrier at him than she already was.

"That wasn't necessary". The Psychic-type only grunted back in response with a proud face. It was definitely a payback.

"Uh… sorry for that." Artemis growled at him. "We need to… distract that thing now. Any ideas?" Artemis showed him the tip of one of her blades with uncomfortably innocent eyes. "No." Her eyes turned angry and she crossed her arms giving a sharp "hm!" at him and looking away.

"What if you throw something at it? Like I don't know… a rock or something?" the girl suggested. It was actually the best idea. It could work, except that Artemis' arms weren't made to hold and even worse, to throw things.

Following a deep sigh, the boy took a quick look at his Pokédex. Two moves were very limiting, but a sudden thought passed through his head. "Leafage throws leaves."

"Now, hear me out." she glanced back at him, but quickly shifted her look away again. "Come on. Help me out there, will you?." she kept ignoring him. In battle she was a brave warrior but when she wasn't fighting she acted like a spoiled baby. Bruno didn't have time for this act, though, so he had no other option other than giving up to her. "Okay, you can hit it… but only once!" The Grass-type jumped and let out a cry of happiness before running to the- "Wait!" the Pokémon jumped and put her arms down in protest. "We want to distract it first. I'll need you to use Leafage at the top. A weak one, we only need to have some leaves flying around the place."

Artemis complained, but did as told. Spinning her body, five leaves swirled inside the burrow. The Zigzagoon saw amazed at that show and started jumping at them trying to catch them. Thea took advantage of the situation and threw the pearl outside (which Bumblebee took back as fast as he could) before Digging another hole to make her exit. Artemis got her promised attack ready and was charging against the playful Zigzagoon, but… "Good, now get back here." the white light from her Pokéball absorbed her inside before she could land her attack.

"Bumblebee! You got your pearl back!" the girl cheered "It… looks good on- B-Bruno what is happening!?"

Artemis' Pokéball suddenly flashed a white light. She forced her way out and she was as angry as ever. She attempted to charge at Bruno, but the boy grabbed her with both hands.

"Stop it." the Pokémon hissed and started shaking trying to break free. "We need to work on that behavior of yours geez. You can't go around and cut everything that moves."

She looked at him with fiery eyes "Of course I can. Challenge me, if you dare." that look meant. She kept shaking while Katherine, Al and Bumblebee laughed in the background.

"Poison types." Bruno suddenly said turning at the girl. He was certainly surprised at that.

"Yep. Weird, I know." she answered "It's a family thing. Grandma, dad, uncle… my sister, and now… me!"

    "Yes, it was… unexpected, indeed."

"Al here was my first Pokémon. Uh… my sister had a Koffing too if I'm not-" her face suddenly turned grim at the sound of someone calling her name. It was the voice of a woman, coming from the same way Bruno and Artemis had battled the Spearow. "Speaking of the devil…" she muttered. "Hi, sis!"

"What happened to you? I was looking for you around the whole route!" she sounded upset, but her face didn't really say so. She looked just like Katherine, except that her eyes were smaller, her hair was longer, and she didn't seem to be shy at all.

"I got… lost." she said laughing nervously.

"Who are you?" she ignored "I don't think I've seen you in the Safari Academy."

"I'm not from the Academy, I'm from Cape--!" Katherine covered his mouth before he could finish his sentence, it was still too late because her sister listened.

"You escaped… with a Cape trainer!?" her tone suddenly turned harsh, and her expression was not that of anger but genuine disappointment. "Kate… how many times do we have to talk about this?"

    "I didn't-!"

"We'll talk about it later! Okay? Now keep moving." she grabbed her from her arm, forcing her to get up and dragged her by her side. "And you! You stay away from her! Got it? If I see you around her ever again, I swear…" being unable to find the correct words, or simply because she didn't want to say them in front of her little sister, she turned around and kept walking with Katherine by her side. The girl turned around and put her hands together as if saying "I'm sorry!" before her sister forced her to walk faster.

Artemis hissed at Katherine's sister when she left and Bruno put her again over his shoulders. She was still angry at him, though. She bit his hand again when he moved her up. and didn't seem to like being carried on his hands. And so the boy and his two Pokémon kept going their way up the route.

    Evening, Route 9

It was something around 5:30 by the time Bruno finally parted ways with Katherine… or well, after her sister told him to get away from her. He remembered thinking that he wouldn't regret helping someone as quiet as her, but that was before he knew that she had a terrible sense of direction (just like him, even with the map), and that ended up delaying his journey a lot; plus, since both kids were extremely shy, waiting for minutes for someone to finally say something made the things extremely uncomfortable for him and probably for her too, and let's not talk about the entire trouble with the Spearow flock back there.

Bumblebee was bouncing by his side (that was the only thing he could do, honestly), and Artemis was still angry at him, but she didn't want to get inside the Pokéball.

His head hurt, his legs hurt, his eyes hurt. He was about to lay down and just let the wild Pokémon eat him, but he didn't want to end his journey without winning at least his first badge, so he had to make it at least to Lavender Town alive; however, with each step he took, it seemed more and more impossible for him to achieve that.

If there was something good about all of this, it's that it was almost sunset so the sun was not much of a nuisance… didn't help much because he couldn't take his hoodie off, and his backpack was as heavy as possible. He could continue thinking about how much he hated being in this route, but his thoughts were fading out more for every step he took.

Taking a closer -and quite blurry- look at his map, he saw that he finally made it past the first half of Route 9, and even walked a bit more. He didn't notice how everything went from rocks and ledges that looked all the same, to rocks and ledges that looked all the same but with trees. The thought of finally getting out of this place gave him a sudden boost of energy to go on… boost that didn't last much, sadly. A sudden growl from his stomach reminded him how hungry and tired he was, making him go back to his even slower pace.

As he struggled to walk, he heard a conversation not too far away from him. They were two guys arguing, one of the voices seemed kind of familiar, but he wasn't sure and didn't want to think too much about it, either. The other one, he possibly hadn't heard him before.

"You are not walking back like that, we have ladies at camp-"

"If you're so mad about it, carry it all yourself. Here- take that and that and those-"

"Wh- hey! Stop! My flowers! Okay, okay, use your stupid shirt-bag."

"Hah! My ideas are always good and never forget- oh, hi Bruno!"

That familiar voice turned out to be Casey, climbing out of a ditch near the road with another boy about his height, a cloth bag of assorted produce in hand. Upon closer inspection, the bag seemed to be a shirt with knots tied in it, which vaguely explained the overheard conversation.

"Did you leave Debbie in Cerulean or did she get ahead of you?"

"She was still there when I called her." he said between gasps, thinking at the same time: "wouldn't be surprising if she got ahead considering I got lost, though"

The other boy frowned. "You okay, buddy? Not looking too good there."

Bruno only grimaced and remained silent, hopefully that answered everything, because he didn't really feel like answering more questions for now.

Casey inspected him for a moment. "Oh-kay! You're coming with us. Jordan, hold the bag." The red-haired boy's muffled protests did not stop Casey from shoving his makeshift bag into his arms. "Bruno-" Casey squatted down, putting himself at a far more manageable level for what they were about to do. "Hop up."

    The boy snapped. "W-what?"

Casey indicated his own back. "Piggyback! We're camping down the road with some other people. Vera's probably done makin' the rice by now."

"Is-is it close? I think I can walk for myself. Honest." he said quite nervous. The first and only time someone offered a piggyback was with Deborah and it went horribly wrong. He would walk as necessary as long as he could avoid a similar experience and the embarrassment of it. But he needed more excuses... "I… I also have a Pokémon on my back. Yeah, and I don't think she would like the idea…"

The boy Casey called Jordan scrunched up his face. "Well, I suppose it's not too far, but…" he didn't finish his sentence, but his expression suggested that he didn't think Bruno should be walking in his current state.

Casey tilted his head. "We could do princess carry? Piggyback is prob'ly easiest for me, though. If you can walk 'bout half a mile then just follow us, I guess!"

"S-sure! I can walk. No problem."

Bruno followed the two boys one… two… three meters behind and before reaching the four meters, he tripped. Casey and Jordan probably wouldn't have noticed if Artemis hadn't hissed at her trainer the moment he fell. The boys' chattering stopped, and the crunch of shoes announced their approach. Casey sat down next to Bruno and poked him in the shoulder. "Rethinkin' my offer yet?"

"I don't have any other choice do I?" he wanted to say, but couldn't with his face on the ground, so he only raised his thumb instead.

    "Get up, then."

As Casey helped Bruno up, he could see Jordan crouching by Artemis with his arms outstretched, shirt-bag strapped across his chest. "And I-" he said, scooping up a reluctant and grumpy Artemis. "Will look after your Pokemon for you in the meantime, so don't worry. What's your name, cutie? I'm Jordan," he cooed.

"Most people introduce themselves to the humans first," Casey reminded him. Jordan cleared his throat and nodded towards Bruno. "Bruno, right? I'm Jordan."

"Hi… Her name is Artemis. I'd be careful with her, she's a little aggressive at times."

"Aw, we'll be okay! I have experience with Grass-types. And aggressive Pokemon." Jordan shot Casey a look. "Alrighty, so she's taken care of," Jordan turned his attention to the bouncing Pokemon next to him. Tilting his head to his side, he shifted Artemis to one arm and fished his Pokedex out of his pocket with his free hand. No doubt the unique coloring threw him off a bit. "And how about you, Spoink? Do you need a hand…" he put his Pokedex back and reached out towards Bumblebee, whose eyes widened as he scrambled out of reach.

"Spoink, the Bounce Pokemon. Using its tail like a spring, it keeps its heart beating by bouncing constantly. If it stops, it dies." Jordan's Pokedex contributed.

"Okay, asked and answered," Jordan breathed, withdrawing his arm to Bumblebee's relief.

Casey hopped to his feet with ease, adjusting Bruno's position with far more control than Deborah ever had. It was uncomfortable (Casey being shirtless was the main reason for it), not that much as that one time, but still uncomfortable. He still didn't like this idea and felt as if he would fall anytime soon. At least Casey was walking and not running like the girl did.

"Almost time to deliver your flowers!" Jordan's face reddened, but the Grass-type had finally settled into his arms and getting back to her nap, so he just sighed and kept walking.
