Blaine and Sarah: New friends

Blaine had awoken the next day feeling a bit more... well, he supposed he could say peace. There was that whole body decaying next to them and a pokemon of his being stolen... yet at the same time he had to say that for some odd reason he really didn't mind. Personally, he thought he had reached a breaking point of sorts. With Derpy's antics now mixed in with this latest jab the universe threw at him, he had to say that he didn't feel that differently. Sure, he could throw a tantrum or be scared... or he could be like Derpy. Just keep on charging through with a smile on his face.

He spent some time looking along the body, wondering if there was some clue... and he found something odd. There was some cash sure, but no wallet. Instead he found an odd black and red ball. He tested it to see if something was in there, but nothing popped out. He hadn't seen a model like this one so he placed it in his backpack for later. "Well... let's keep moving." He said to the Totodile.

The two walked along as the daylight shined on down. He was feeling good, better in fact. That was when he heard some noise and paused, "Hm..." He looked down to see Derpy already baring some teeth and he smirked. He didn't know why he was smiling... but it was nice to see Derpy actually get on the offensive for some reason. He continued walking calmly as they turned the corner and Blaine looked out at the sight. A obviously weary poliwag going against a mareep. "You know." He called out, "Water isn't good against electric at all. You really should use something different."

"Alright Poliwag. Use Water Gun on Mareep. Hit it while its down quick!" shouted Sarah as she focused on the sleeping Mareep across from her. "Hold on a sec" she added as she remembered she had just heard someone speak a few seconds ago. She spun around and was greeted by a trainer and his pokemon. The trainer looked to be roughly around the same age as Sarah and he had a head of medium length black hair. A small little pokemon stood down by the trainers side, it was a Totodile, something which Sarah had never seen before.

She looked at the boy for a few seconds before she spun back placing her back towards him. She frantically attempted to fix her hair as well as her clothes in an attempt to make herself look more presentable. "Damn, I really shouldn't have slept on the ground last night" muttered Sarah before she turned back around towards Blaine.

"Water against Electric? Tell me about it. My other pokemon ... got lost, so I can't exactly switch right now. I really want to catch this Mareep though." Sarah said with a cheesy grin.

Blaine nodded, "Guys in black? Red Rs on shirts and came at night?"

Derpy gurgled a bit as he titled his head and then fell onto his rump as he sort of rocked back and forth against the dirt, "In any case, you want it that badly? Well... you should probably catch something else before this mareep."

Poliwag's Water Gun had hit Mareep dead on but thankfully the sheep pokemon still slept soundly. Sarah took a quick glance around at the battle before turning back towards Blaine again.

"Guys in black? I wouldn't know. I was sleeping. They must have arrived in the night while I was asleep and then snatched my Fennekin. You have a run in with these guys before?" Sarah quizzed.

Sarah glanced back at the Mareep which was still fast asleep before speaking once again. "Yeah I suppose I should catch something else before taking on Mareep but ... I just thought I'd be able to bag the Mareep now, you know?"

Blaine tilted his head, "Need some help? I mean, I have nothing better to do just to be frank."

"Wow ... like are you serious?" Sarah eyes widening as she spoke. "I mean yeah ... if you don't mind of course" Sarah added with a somewhat nervous laugh.

Blaine whistled as Derpy looked up at him, "Derpy... how about a bite at the mareep?"

The totodile jumped to his feet and danced on them as he gurgled happily. He looked over at the electric type as he dashed forward. The little totodile was quick as the mareep began to yawn and open its eyes, only to be met by the image of a large toothed predator clamping his jaws around her face. He lifted her up and then swung his head to the left as the Mareep flew and slammed into a tree, clearly knocked out by the attack. Derpy stared for a while before he saw his tail wagging behind him and eagerly began to chase after it.

Sarah and Poliwag both watched as Derpy took out Mareep with no effort at all. Sarah pulled out an empty poke ball and threw it at the now knocked out Mareep. The ball hit the pokemon and it was sucked inside. After the pokemon had disappeared, the ball fell to the ground and began to rock back and forth for a few seconds. After a few rocks the ball stopped and a sharp ping sound was heard coming from it.

Sarah walked over to where the ball was resting and picked it up. She smiled as she looked down at the ball until she placed it onto her belt. She turned around and walked back over towards Blaine. "Thanks. That was very kind of you. It's not every day a boy comes along and catches a pokemon for a girl" Sarah said softly as her cheeks started to blush.

Poliwag was watching Derpy chase after his tail and soon started running around with him. Poliwag continued to run in circles until he eventually got dizzy and fell to the ground letting out a small laugh as he did.

Derpy giggled as he jumped about happily, though as he did so a bright white light soon enveloped his form. His outline grew higher, he rounded out a bit and as the light cleared a very different mon stood there. Well... not so different. He still had his blue and yellow coloring and that same determined look in his eyes, but he had also gained muscle mass and... even though Blaine didn't know how he knew it... just a bit of wisdom in his eyes.

"Croc." Derpy said as he looked down at the Poliwag and patted it gently.

"Hm.. wondering when that would happen." He said. "I read up that Totodile evolve to Croconaw, looks like it's finally happened."

"Wow .... I'd never seen a pokemon evolve before. That's so cool" Sarah said in a low register bordering more on whispering to be exact.

Poliwag had to look upwards at Derpy now. The once small Totodile was now a much beefier Croconaw. Poliwag let out a little giggle as Derpy patted him on the head.

I wonder when one of my pokemon will evolve? though Sarah as she continued to stare at Derpy in amazement.

Blaine nodded, "Well... I guess I'll leave you two with your new catch." He said as he began to walk away, Derpy quick to start following, "Have fun and all."

"Wait! Before you go" shouted Sarah. "I never did get your name ... "

Blaine stopped, "Blaine." He said as he looked back, "Not sure where you're heading, but I'm just heading to the next town. I'm sure you'll find your Fennekin. No worries about that."

"Thanks Blaine. I'm Sarah. I'll probably be heading to the next town as well but I think I'd like to hang around this route and train for a little while maybe. You two can go on ahead though. I hope to meet you and your Croconaw again." Sarah said with a smile.

He gave a small nod, "You too." He began to walk away agin, with Derpy just walking beside him, "You know..." Blaine said to his mon, "I'm thinking we should meet up with those rockets again. After all, they left their property behind..."

Sarah watched as Blaine and Derpy walked down the route together. "Blaine ... " Sarah said in a low voice with a big smile on her face. She stared into a daze until her Poliwag finally broke her out of it by letting out a small cry. She shook her head free and looked around. "We should probably get some training done Poliwag. Did you see the way that Totodile evolved? That was so cool! How about you? Do you want to evolve?" quizzed Sarah as she placed her hands on her knees and looked down at her Poliwag.

"Poli!" the little pokemon said with obvious enthusiasm in his voice.

"Alright then. Guess we better get started" Sarah replied, with a certain confidence in her voice.

This is totally the best journey RP ever, Derpy and shipping and all, but the GM lives a busy life this summer and therefore it's best that we pause and close this for now before she makes you all go mad. I'll gauge interest among you, my dear players, in september when I'll go back to uni and probably have more freetime. If it seems like something we all want then, we could unpause or restart Crossroads again!

The OOC thread will remain open if anyone wants to discuss or say something. Thank you so much for being part of this up until now, in any case, i love you all. See you in the skype chat still!

[S-HIGHLIGHT]Okay you are allowed to post. I'll add in the moves on the pokémon when I can be bothered.......... it's tedious ;; use your imagination until then? :3[/S-HIGHLIGHT]

chapter 6 ; UNION CAVE

Spoiler:
After daunting events on the countryside, our weary travelers rested in a Pokémon Center at the southern end of Route 35. One by one, or two by two in some cases, they now continue on, eager to find their lost teammates but ready for whatever awaits them...

The official entrance to Union Cave lies just south of the Pokémon Center. It's really a road through a mountain, since the natural system of caverns made it simpler to make the route go through the mountain than over it. Plus, there's even more wild pokémon living atop of it than inside, making a journey there more perilous than the cave route.

The official path through Union Cave is fairly wide and lit with lanterns all the way, but there are many side paths where curious trainers often stray to find pokémon or secrets. If you stay on the road, you can probably find trainers to battle though. And if you go too deep in the caves, who knows what awaits?

Weather - ... it's a CAVE. MOIST. DARK.

Only through Event 1:

Events:

1) Not available for those without STRANGE CRYSTAL PART unless they travel together with someone who has one! You wander off from the main road and stumble upon a statue, much like the one in the Ruins of Alph. If a STRANGE CRYSTAL PART comes near the statue, a secret passage opens up in the wall, revealing an underground river. If you somehow touch the water, the whole cave rumbles and a huge pokémon flies up from the water and out from the opening you just created, before you can scan it with your pokédex. (hint: it's Lugia fyi, but the characters have only seen it in temples or fairytales, if at all. How about that!) Reward? The big, strange pokémon will recognize you one day in the future. Oooh.

2) Not available to those who got their starter stolen, unless they travel together with someone who didn't! As you're nearing the exit of the cave, you are stopped by a band of local "militia". They are suspicious of anyone traveling to Azalea and claim that you are part of something called "Team Rocket" because you have a rare, shiny pokémon. You'll have to persuade them somehow (through battle until they give up or through some kind of proof) that you are not. As their excuse, you get a special TICKET OF TRUST from the locals that can probably be used somehow in the next town...

3) A horde of cave-dwelling pokémon overwhelms you and some NPC trainers. Regardless of if you rescue one of the other trainers, or if one of them rescues you, you now suddenly have a big fan. The trainer thinks it's super cool that they got to rescue you/get rescued by you. Expect to see more of this person in the future - they adore you. If several players do this event, you can get one fan each.

New faces, new places, same Derpy

It had been a long weary journey, that was for sure. Blaine was pretty sure that at this point he was developing a cold. Perhaps journeying while it had been raining hadn't best the best idea in the world, but they were further along the path now, so there was that boon. His map did point out a pokecenter further up the road and judging by the time calculated they would be able to reach the center in about an hour. That wasn't his only worry at the moment though.

He glanced down at the Croconaw that was walking silently beside him. Derpy had changed, that was for sure. It had finally been cemented this morning when the water type didn't really jump around that much. He hadn't even tried to nom a tree trunk even though there were many close by. In fact, he just seemed to be more... mature? Yeah, that was a good description. Blaine had heard that pokemon changed when they evolved, so perhaps evolution was similar to becoming an adult in a sense?

But it was funny in a way too. Despite actually looking professional Blaine could still see that mischievous look in Derpy's eyes. He wasn't sure how he could spot it but... he just could. Thankfully Derpy wasn't really displaying any outward aggression, unlike the last time he had woken up with him. Blaine was actually waiting for the Croconaw to just give off a smirk and start running down the path, or doing something else mischievous, but he... just walked. It was something new to get used to at least.

And so Blaine fiddled with his watch and had to be poked by Derpy to notice that they were at the center. Unlike the ones back in the city this one was just a bit larger, probably in case a large influx of trainers arrived and needed a place to sleep. He wearily made his way inside and quickly took a spot at one of the computers as he opened up a link to the storage place for pokemon. He had thought long and hard about what to do with his mon, but he had realized something too. He would have to focus on training specific members of his team to be as good as he could be.

Derpy of course would stay on, but he had to focus on what he really wanted in a team. So... he took off to the internet! He spent a few minutes researching the mon on his team and seeing what their kind could accomplish. He had been thinking first off at pawning off his Smeargle... that was until he saw just how powerful one could become. Yeah, Smeargle would be staying on for sure. He wanted to really focus on three for now and the most promising mon was Legious. Ninjasks were quick bugs, and on top of that he could get a Shedninja out of evolution too.

He easily set his Bellsprout and Bagon into the PC and made sure to grab a bite to eat. From there he went back out and called out his two team members. "So... well, you two are the ones with most potential alongside Depry here. You'll be the basis for my team!"

Smeargle and Legious glanced at each other warily as Derpy walked up and looked over the two. "Hm... now... for a name..." He looked down at the Smeargle and snapped his fingers, "How about Brutus? Throw everyone off when instead of some physically imposing mon a simple Smeargle comes out, eh?" He thought about it for a moment, "Yeah, that'll work great."

Derpy suddenly snorted and snapped his fingers and pointed down the ground as he jabbered out. Legious and Brutus paled as the Smeargle got quickly onto his hands and began doing some push ups. Legious, being the four-legged insect he was, just pushed up and down with his limbs as Derpy crossed his arms and looked on.

Meanwhile, as the flowers bloomed near the summit of the route, a young lady has just completed her secondary capture, en route to find a suitable spot to have just a bit of her favourite Rosemary tea. Her name was Morgan Wilson. She just started her journey some time ago, with her love of pokemon is only rivaled by her fraudulent nature. She just gotten her first badge from Violet City a while ago too, and now, she's on her way to more adventures, or misadventures, whichever comes first. Soon her tried little feet felt relief as she stumbled a upon a red-roofed building she knew all too well - a Pokemon Center. It wasn't that bad of a journey, but, she hated walking for long periods of time. It's like, someone should of invented a device that allowed her to quick jump to wherever she chose, at least, that's what she thought.

In any case, the doors slid wide open as she made her appearance inside the building. Not as spacious as the ones in Hoenn, she thought, taking out one of her pokeballs. But, I suppose it will have to do. Isn't that right.. Combusken? Her first pokemon was indeed a Torchic from sometime ago. She thought it was quite cute for a fire type pokemon, since the majority of the ones in Hoenn were either big, smelly, or big and smelly, but it was nice to see the change of that! It evolved to a Combusken sometime after her gym battle in Violet City, where at first, she thought that it's face was totally weird, but, she could work with it, she thought! Maybe give it a ribbon, or something.

She then rested upon a nearby table as she got out her tea set from her bag. Of course, it only had to be iced tea, since boling water seemed to be.. not too common in Johto. At least, that's what she thought. So she sat there, cross legged, and took a sip. I do wonder if the other cities in here aren't build for the hicks and sticks, she thought. I would like to see something called a 'bed' before I have to pass on over. At least, it'd be nice.

Meanwhile outside Derpy was shouting out at the two mon, mostly at Smeargle though. The skinny painter was having quite the difficult time with his pushups and being yelled at by a feisty Croconaw probably wasn't helping much. On the one hand Blaine did want to step in, on other he preferred not having his hand bitten off, so he just awkwardly stood there.

"Nin..." Legious groaned as the Nincada finally collapsed, breathing heavily as Derpy glared at the bug. He shook his head and went on over to smaller mon as he easily picked him up from the ground and glared right at him. Legious was shuddering with fear, wincing as he probably expected his antennae to be pulled again. Instead Derpy just let him back on the ground and jabbered out more in the pokemon tongue.

That got Legious to quickly crank out more push ups. Brutus was starting to sweat as his tail whipped about him, splattering a bit of the ground with dark blue paint. Finally Derpy said something else and both mon collapse to the ground looking rather weary.

"Well... I guess that's one way of training." Blaine commented. He pulled out phone once more and clicked onto a map app, "Let's see... Union Cave is up ahead. Shouldn't be that hard to navigate through."

Derpy went on over and sat next to his trainer as Blaine recalled his other two mon, "So it's still pretty early. If we head out now we could get through the cave before the sun gets too high. What do you think?"

The Croconaw just gave a simple shrug as he got back on his feet and tugged on Blaine's pants as he pointed out to the center and the clearly pointed to his own yellow belly. "Alright, but just a bit." The two were soon back inside the center with Blaine ordering some food. He had barely sat down at a booth as within a few seconds Derpy had practically swallowed every single crumb of the sandwich. "Well... your appetite has increased, that's for sure." He chuckled.

Morgan finally finished her time with her iced tea. As she was then taking her tea set away, she caught a glimpse of something big and blue - with a big appetite? A pokemon she had never seen before? Whatever it was, it reminded her of those fairy tale animals called 'crocodiles' or whatever. She was intrigued, but at the same time, it looked like the pokemon and its trainer were having lunch. Only someone really rude would disturb someone having their food in peace.

"Hey you," Morgan then introduced towards the young male trainer. "What is that pokemon? I never even seen it before, and it's pretty.. interesting. Is it a dark type?"

Blaine glanced over as did Derpy. The Croconaw hopped out of his seat as Blaine looked back at the water type, "Uh... he's sort of a water type. You know, blue skin and all." Derpy looked Morgan up and down, snorting a bit as he did so and turning away with disapproval clearly written on his face. Blaine caught sight of the pokeballs that the female had, "I see you have some mon on you. You heading to Union Cave? I mean, that's the only thing out here, unless you're coming out from Union Cave."

"Well of course. These pokeballs certainly don't have any donuts in them, do they?" Morgan can only ask with a slight chuckle, amusing herself. "Yes, I have pokemon. And um.. what's a 'Union Cave'? A cave that.. Unions people? Johto does have really weird landmarks."

"Well, not really. It's the cave further up the road. It's just what it's called." Derpy made his way over to Blaine and tugged once more on his pant leg, "We'll be going soon Derpy, no worries." He patted the Croconaw on the head as he got out of his seat, "Well, he's wanting to head out. So if you're not from Johto where are you from?"

"Why, only the region of Hoenn, of course," Morgan replied. "It's not too bad. Loads of water, tropical life, and for some reason, people are really into trumpets there. I wasn't really sure why, but, I guess it's a custom to play trumpets. Of course, I moved to this region when I was about 10 years old and didn't really learn anything until now on this journey of mine. Except the lack of beds make me cringe."

"Uh huh... well what have you learned then?" He asked, "I mean, I don't think there is a lot to learn to be honest." He adjusted his pack a bit as Derpy impatiently tapped his foot.

"Learned?" Morgan repeated. "Well, the people are friendly, I'll give them that. In Cherrygrove there was this old man who was unexpectedly fast as he showed me around. He then, for some reason, offered me his running shoes, which was smelly and ungodly disturbing! When I went to Violet City, I met Falkner, battled him, while he had all of these.. cheerleaders, chanting PIDEGOTTO GET UP! PIDEGOTTO GET UP! And something like that but it never worked, so, he ended up firing them all. Now I'm here, met a few wild pokemon, and I heard there was a city beyond here, which I guess it's beyond the cave? Hm." she looked upon Blaine. "Saaaaay, you seem like the bodyguard type, mind taking a innocent young lady along for the big and scaaaawy cave?" Followed up with her traditional fake 'cutsie' face.

Blaine wasn't quite sure HOW to react. Sure, he knew some girls, but none of them had acted... well, quite like this. For one thing, this girl seemed to be rather hyper and on the other she seemed to be naive too. Surely she had to do some research on Johto before she came over here... right? Regardless, he supposed they were heading in the right direction. Besides, it was a straight shot through after all. "Uh... sure I guess."

Derpy looked up at the two humans and crossed his arms as he grumbled a bit, "Well... I guess we better get moving right? Sun isn't too high so it shouldn't be that hot."

"Very well then!" Morgan said with a smile. "I'll let you have the honor of leading the way! And if you're good, I'll send you my ever loving thanks! Just one thing though, please walk straight when you walk? I don't like looking at men who walk like a Mankey who is about to shout 'it's morphing time'."

"... I'll try to?" He said, not really getting the reference as he made his way to the door, "I'm not sure how dark it'll be in there, so we'll have to stay close together."

Blaine x Morgan - Part II

"Well it shouldn't be that much further. Good thing the weather is clear today, yesterday wasn't pretty at all." Blaine commented as Derpy walked on alongside him, every so often glancing up at the strange girl that accompanied his trainer. He wasn't necessarily scowling, but at the same time he didn't wear a happy grin on his face. He would just snort then look back to the ground, only to glance back every so often.

"Thank goodness," Morgan said in relief, followed up with a sigh of reflection. "There was nothing here but rocks, rocks, and.. oh gods, this is a surprise! Even more rocks!! More to that, it's bland, dull, boring, and only morons would hang out here. Forget 'Union Cave', we should just call this place, Kanto."

Blaine shrugged, "I wouldn't say that." He said, "There are a ton of tunnels here too, easy to get lost. We just have to stay close to the lanterns." He looked down that path as he saw more lanterns lighting the way. "It's a piece of cake really. Only things we'll have to worry about are wild pokemon, but again, it shouldn't really be that much of a problem."

"Hm, I suppose you have a point. And by the way, I was lying; I have heard about this cave once before. There was a certain legend about this sort of cave, and it goes as follows," Morgan then took a deep breath, preparing her story. "Once upon a time, some guy said this place was boring. And he was right. THE END. Like seriously, I can appreciate a good wild pokemon and all, but wouldn't it be fantastic if say, we met a crystal Onix of some sort? Or a Psyduck that didn't have a headache all the time? I mean, that was part of the whole reason why I became a trainer in the first place, to explore the unknown!" Morgan then sighed. She knew she had to stop complaining. Eventually. "Well, anyway, Blaine, was it? Tell me, why have you become a trainer yourself?"

Blaine shrugged, "Well, mostly I was pushed into it by my parents. I guess as long as I'm doing it I might as well continue, right? I guess your reason is why ma-" He was suddenly stopped as he tripped over a certain Croconaw's stretched out tail and he looked over to see Derpy there with a wide smile on his face, "Croc!" He said as he pointed out to another tunnel.

Blaine sighed, "Derpy, why would we go off trail?" He asked.

The Croconaw just blinked, then did an about turn and ran off into the tunnel, "Derp-dammit." Blaine muttered as he got back up and brushed his clothes off, "Uh... one moment." He said to Morgan as he ran into the tunnel as well, "Derpy if I fall off a ledge and fall to my death I am SO blaming you!" He shouted angrily. His Totodile meanwhile turned about and stuck out his tongue playfully as the Croconaw descended deeper into the maze of tunnels.

Morgan caught up. "He's a cheeky little thing, isn't he?" Morgan chuckled. "Be glad this isn't a volcano or anything!"

Blaine frowned, "Uh... you have rope right? Or something? We have to find our way back somehow." He moved on through the tunnel to find Derpy sitting on a rock, his blue tail wagging behind him energetically as he smiled widely. "Well, didn't go far did you?"

The Croconaw just smirked and got off of his rock as he pointed to a rather small body of water that resided near one of the walls. Blaine didn't know what else to call it than an underground spring. "Not bad." He said, "So, any other reason you came down here?"

Derpy gurgled and waved his hands about wildly as he pointed back to the water. Blaine peered closer at the water and could see some dark shapes moving in it, "Huh, I guess water types are down here then."

"Really?" Morgan leaned on in closer to the flowing water. Dark shapes were there, alright. The only problem was, Morgan had the lack of means to get to them. "Hm, my pokemon sort of hate the water, though. In my clothes, I like it even less. Any bright ideas?"

Blaine couldn't help but shrug, "All I have is Derpy. Well, we're already off the path. You wouldn't happen to remember how to get to it?" He asked as he turned around and saw the various tunnels that connected to this room, "Cause I'm unsure which tunnel we used to get here."

Morgan became confused as well. "Uh, I think it's... the right one," she pointed out in a guess. "Because it's uh... the right one?"

Blaine facepalmed, "We're lost aren't we?" He muttered.

Derpy himself gave a firm nod.

"Well... fantastic. Guess we'll just have to wander back onto the path. Hopefully we can. Just stay close Morgan. And hopefully no Onixs charge through to eat us." He adjusted his pack and made his move forward to the closest right path.

"Aw, is someone afraid of the big ol' Onix?" Morgan had to tease. "Don't worry, they're just afraid of you! But just in case, I'll stay close indeed!" Morgan then stayed nearby Blaine's back. "Hopefully we won't see any of those miserable Zubats either. Hate those.. those.. things." She continued down the path with him.

Blaine frowned, "Never met a Zubat yet to be honest. What are they?"

"Hmmm..." Morgan thought. "Imagine one of the most annoying people you've ever you met. Multiply that by ten. Now, picture a time that you've been biten by something. Add 5 to that. Equal it all together - that's what a Zubat is. They're bloodsucking bats who live in caves like this and god help us if we encounter a horde of them. God help us."

Blaine chuckled, "I doubt a horde is that bad." He said, "You're just over exaggerating it. Now come on, be truthful. If they are bats they just bite and that's it. I doubt they'll bother two trainers after all."

"Yeah. They JUST bite and all," Morgan repeated. "I mean, who cares if they 'just' bite us! It's not like we're made of flesh and bone after all! Yeah, you're absolutely right, there's no need to worry at all."

Blaine just shrugged, "Hopefully we'll just avoid any mon we come across. I don't want some sort of cave pile up to happen after all."

"Did you forget that this is the world's dullest cave?" Morgan insisted. "You're more likely to have clowns in unicycles come out of your backpack."

He shrugged again, "Then we'll be fine, right?" He looked out amid the next room they came into to just see more tunnels, "We are most definitely lost."

Morgan sighed. Hooray for Kanto...

Christina & Aberdeen
chapter 6, event #3

The afternoon sun tickled their eyes when Christina and Aberdeen climbed the steep road that led up to the entrance of what was probably the least dangerous cave in Johto. At least that was what the kind nurse at the Route 35 Pokémon Center had claimed. That was why Deen and Tina had decided that it wasn't worth staying the night there - instead they kept going, hoping to reach the city that lay on the other side to the south before nightfall.

It took only a few steps into the Union Cave before a clear shift in the air could be noticed. It was much colder in here than outside. And also strangely moist, despite rain having poured down onto the trainers for most part of the day. A sort of moldy smell lay in the air. But at least it wasn't as dark and eerie as you'd imagine a cave to be. A wide road with lanterns in the walls at regular intervals lay before them. Follow it and you'd be in Azalea in no time.

Christina shuddered a little, once again inwardly cursing herself for not bringing a jacket with a hood or any kind of out-doorsy clothes besides the ones she was wearing aside from maybe a change or two. Glancing down at the Bagon at her side whom she had allowed to walk with them, she smiled lightly as he restlessly walked a little back and forth, staring into the well-lit cave. She looked back up at Aberdeen with the same smile on her lips, one of her hands still holding onto the strap of her bag.

"Alright, the sooner we can get through this cave, the sooner we'll be in Azalea. Ready to go spelunking, Deen?" She asked with a light grin forming on her lips, her cheerfulness and optimism having gotten quite a boost after her and Aberdeen's battle at the campsite earlier.

Aberdeen glanced back and noticed her cheerful attitude. That relaxed him a bit. He had been uptight all since the morning when they had noticed that Winter and Sindy were gone... But Christina seemed to be feeling better now that she trusted her Bagon more, and also had a new Haunter on her team.

"I'm ready..." he began, feeling the presence of what he sort of considered one of the new additions on his team, right beside his head. It was Unown U, whom Ab referred to as plainly U. "So... We should follow the main route, right?"

His sense of adventure told him to sprint into the first dark cavern that opened up to their side as they slowly made their way forward. But after the events of this night, it was as if a new, careful part of him had awakened. At the same time as he itched to run head first into something unknown and thrilling, the last thing he wanted was to endanger Christina. Or her pokémon.

"Yeah..." Christina said, lingering a little on her words, tucking her free hand into the pocket of her shorts. Since she'd been little, she always loved to go exploring in what she imagined was old ruins, caves and the like, and a place like this was thriving with nooks, crannies and hideaways that could be so much fun to explore.

However, her more rational self was more in effect due to the earlier events of their Pokémon having disappeared, so despite her willingness to explore and her curiosity, she shook her head with a light smile pointed at Aberdeen. "Yeah, that's probably a good idea. Come on, Deen! Time waits for no one, right?"

With that, she took the first step and began heading down the lit, but rather empty path through the cave, the walls quickly expanding to become less of a tunnel and more of a full-fledged cave.

"By the way Deen, how're you liking the new addition to your team?" She asked, looking over her shoulder at the Unown floating along besides the boy.

"He's awesome!" Aberdeen laughed. "Thank you for lending him to me. I have no idea what he's all about yet, and the pokédex really doesn't seem to know anything about them as you said before, but that's all the more fun, isn't it! We'll get to see what you're made of ourselves!"

The last part was directed to U, as Ab tickled it's bend and made it swirl around his head a few loops.

"How's your own addition then?" he asked Christina. "Haunter, I mean?"

Christina looked down to the Pokéball hanging at her waist that continued the newly caught Haunter. She shrugged lightly, lifting a hand to scratch the bridge of her nose. "I'm not really sure... I haven't had it out since catching it. To be honest, I'm a little unsure about it, what with it being a ghost and all. Although I guess it could be a pretty good addition to the team..."

She paused, looking down at Conan, who was marching on ahead in front of the trainers, taking complete charge of this expedition, it seemed. She looked back to the Unown hovering around Ab and tilted her head a little to the side. "Hmh... what type do you think they are? Could be... Dark. Or Psychic, I suppose... hmm."

"I don't know. They don't seem as dark as dark types usually do, I think. But they're certainly not water or fire or something otherwise elemental. And not dragon or bird even though he is flying," Ab pondered, trying to talk a lot to distance himself from the idea of Tina's new pokémon being a ghost. He had tried to forget about it and succeeded, since she caught it.

But then he stopped in his tracks. "You don't think they are ghosts, do you?" he asked with a voice that failed him slightly.

U hovered, unblinking, in between them.

Shaking her head lightly, Christina kept looking ahead of her, down the lantern-lit path of the cave. "Nah, probably not. It's just a typing, after all. 'Ghost type' just refers to them being sort of disembodied and being alot like ghosts, I think. I don't buy into the rumors that they're actual ghosts."

She paused, glancing at Aberdeen while continuing to walk down the path, a curious little smile pulling up her lips. "... You're not telling me you're scared of ghosts, are you?"

Aberdeen opened his mouth but didn't manage to come up with a great rebuttal. Lying wasn't his thing anyways. Especially not to Tina. She wasn't Vincent or someone else who he thought would judge him, after all.

"Maybe," he just muttered, not sure of if he was ready to bring up the reasons for that with her yet.

Bringing her fist up to her mouth, Christina tried to choke down a giggle, but ultimately couldn't help herself, quickly clearing her throat afterwards as she shook her head with a smile. "That's... pretty adorable, Deen. Don't worry, if any ghosts come our way, we'll have my Haunter to chase them off!"

She nodded firmly as if cementing that thought and trying to let Aberdeen know that she didn't judge him for his fear. After all, she had a few things she was scared of herself. But uncharacteristically enough, Ab glared back at her as if she had just hit him.

"There's nothing pretty or adorable about having a dead sister!" he spat out.

While the two were talking, a low hum vibrated through the air, Unown U turning around to see its friend, T, floating up to it. The two did their odd hum-like communicating for a few moments before a sudden, bright flash of light enveloped the small group, just as Christina was about to say something. As the light faded, Christina, Aberdeen, Conan and the Unowns, found themselves in complete darkness.

Christina froze in place, her eyes widening as she quickly whipped her head from side to side, unable to see even an arm's length in front of her due to being used to the lanterns a moment ago. "... Deen! Deen, are you there? What happened?!"

"Either, power just went out, or... Or we're not on the main road anymore," he replied hoarsely from the darkness beside her.

They could both hear Conan shuffling about somewhere nearby and Christina began fiddling with her bag. "Hold on, I've got my... oh, there it is!"

She pulled out her pokégear and fiddled with it for a few moments before a bright cone of light penetrated the darkness, shining at a nearby wall, but none the less illuminating everything in the closest vicinity.

Conan growled at the light, but Christina looked relieved as she looked over at Aberdeen. "If you've got one, you can turn on your flashlight too. Are you okay?"

She moved the light a little around, furrowing her brows in confusion. The area was a mass of rocky floor, walls, several tunnels leading out of the rather large cave, but no sign of the lanterns that lit up the main part of the way through.

"Better yet," Aberdeen's voice, now less gloomy, came before a crackling noise and a blueish light made their general vicinity a bit more visible. "I've got Terribolt!"

Beside the boy stood his newly caught Flaaffy with a face that told them that she didn't quite approve of this moist cave (it made her fleece curl in an unpleasant way). But at least it had the advantage of letting her effortlessly conjure some static electricity to brighten up their surroundings with.

"Seems like we can't enter a cave or ruin without ending up in some dark, unknown place," Aberdeen sighed, but he did it with a smile that didn't quite hide his excitement through the dim light. "What now, then?"

"Oh, nice idea!" Christina nodded, smiling at the Flaaffy. Despite her seeming a little snooty, it was a pretty adorable Pokémon. Christina pulled out a Pokéball and recalled Conan, much to his dismay. "Sorry, but I don't think it'd be a good idea letting you run around in here."

After tucking him away, Christina looked around the cave while chewing on the inside of her cheek. "Yeah, tell me about it... second ruin slash cave, second time I end up in a place like this... I guess we try to find our way out."

Pausing for a moment, she narrowed her eyes at one of the tunnel-exits away from the cave they were standing in. "I'm pretty sure... it's this way. Come on!"

Unable to hold back an excited smile of her own, she hopped onto one of the rocks in her path, trying to traverse the rocky cave floor without getting hurt, leading the way for Aberdeen, Terribolt and the two Unowns floating along behind them.

"Uh, wait! Tina!" Ab shouted as he ran after her. Gosh, and I thought I was reckless.

The tunnel led out into a bigger, more open cave... But there were no lanterns or well traversed road there. Rather just plenty of other openings in the wall ahead of them to choose between. Ab scratched his head and glanced at the eager redhead beside him.

"Any more great ideas? I still don't get how we even ended up here."

The Unowns twirled around in the air above their heads, earning a suspicious look from Aberdeen.

"Come on, Deen, you can't expect us to get out of the cave by just one tunnel." Christina commented, a curious smile on her lips as she continued looking around the cave with her flashlight, her spirits definitely not dampened by them being lost.

"In fact, I think... we need to go... this way!" She pointed at one of the exits and began striding her way towards it, keeping her phone up in preparation for any Pokémon attacks or the like.

Terribolt and Aberdeen shared a look before following the girl. While the sheep had not been completely overjoyed with being captured after her rampaging battle against the Haunter, she was at least somewhat comforted by the fact that Haunter had been captured too in the end. Plus, her new trainer was kind of cute. Not that she would let him know that she thought so, of course. No, she would pretend that the only reason she didn't fry him here and now because she could (because nobody would ever find him here in the deep cave so it would be the perfect crime) was because she felt like letting him live for now. So she followed him.

This tunnel, after a few twists and turns in narrow pathways, also led them out into a bigger cave. But this one had the faintest trace of daylight finding its way down from a hole in the ceiling far above them, glittering in the strange greenish color of what seemed to be an underground river running through Union Cave.

"Wow, this place is actually beautiful," Ab commented as the ensamble emerged onto a ledge above the scene, a few meters up on the cave wall. "But it's still not the main road. Tina, are you just running around randomly?"

"Wow..." Christina commented, staring down at the river, the shaft of daylight providing a small amount of illumination in the rather large cave. She huffed a little at Aberdeen's question, turning around to look at him with a hint of frustration in her expression.

"I- well... sort of I guess, but what do you propose, instead? I mean, at least we managed to not get stuck in a dead-end, right? And it's better than just standing around."

But Ab put a kind hand on her shoulder. "If you hadn't gone first, I would probably have run around randomly too," he assured her. "And hey, at least we're not alone anymore. Look down there!"

Christina followed his pointing finger and down on the cave floor, next to the river lazily flowing through it were a pair of boys. It didn't look like they had noticed them and they seemed pre-occupied with looking around.

"Okay... great, this is the place! Hand me the map, Jamie." One of them said. He looked about the same height as Aberdeen, with brown, curly hair and freckles, but maybe a year or so younger. He put out his hand towards the smaller boy while squinting further into the cave, carrying a flashlight in his other hand.

Jamie, the other boy, looking to be about the same age as the first one, blinked a little and looked up at the first boy. He had jet-black hair, but his was cut short and slightly messy, ever so slightly looking like first kid, though without the freckles and with a different hair colour.

"... Huh? But you said -you- were gonna bring the map, Donald."

Donald turned around and looked Jamie square in the eyes, confusion across his face. "What're you talking about? I told you to bring it, because I was bringing the food!"

Jamie shook his head and reached into his backpack, pulling out a sandwich. "No way, you told me to bring the food, so I did!"

Lifting a hand to pinch the bridge of his nose, Donald took a deep breath of air to calm himself. "... Are you telling me that we -both- packed the food and nobody grabbed the map? The -only- reason we came here in the first place?!"

"Well, I would've, if you hadn't told me to get the food instead!" Jamie countered, crossing his arms over his chest, looking annoyed.

"I didn't! I told you to -bring the map- and leave the food to me!"

While the two were arguing, the water of the river rippled and a yellow head poked out of the previously still water, followed by another. They proceeded to rise out of the water, a pair of large eyes, an almost pear-shaped, yellow body, a beak and an incredibly dorky look on their face as the two duck Pokémon waddled up to look at the two kids arguing.

One of them let out a quack, lifting its hands to hold its head while turning to look at the other, who proceeded to quack in agreement, holding its head as well.

"... You never appreciate anything I do, and you always blame me! I knew I should've asked my brother to go with me instead!" The black-haired kid said, frowning and throwing the sandwich on the floor in front of Donald.

"Well, maybe you should've! I wouldn't have been dragged all the way here for nothing, then! You may be my cousin, but next time, I'm going on my own!"

"What?! No way, I bought the map, you can't just steal my treasure! You jerk!"

The two Psyducks let out another quack each, the argument continuing to escalate, causing them to waddle a little in place, quacking louder and more often the more time went on. Eventually, it was a cacophony of shouting and loud quacking, until the two cousins had enough.

"Shut up! We're arguing here!" The cousins yelled at the Psyducks in unison, having turned away from each other to glare at the two Pokémon.

That seemed to have been the last straw, however, as the Psyducks' eyes started glowing, a faint rumbling quickly starting to shake the entirety of the cave, causing the two boys to stagger away from the Pokémon, eyes wide with surprise and fear as the two Psyduck didn't quack any more.

"That's it!" Aberdeen suddenly exclaimed from the ledge where their little group were standing, watching the scene turn less and less pleasant. "I knew I had seen that guy before! I should say hi."

Without any sort of explanation to Christina, Aberdeen seemed to finally be back to his true self again as he motioned for Terribolt to follow him as he practically leaped out from the ledge. Realizing mid-air that it had been a little bit too high up for a quick jump, he forced himself not to panic.

"Cotton Spore!" he instead shouted down to Terribolt who had already landed. She wasted no time in tossing out the electrically engorged bundles of fleece below the trainer, so that his landing didn't end up being quite as painful as it should have been with only the stone floor to catch him.

"Wow, it worked," Ab said, almost laughing, as he got up and examined a scratched leg.

But he was immediately tossed off his feet again by another set of rumblings. The two Psyducks near the river, still many meters away from Aberdeen, were walking with staring and glowing eyes towards Donald and Jamie, forcing them against a cave wall with no escape route.

"Oh, I get it," Ab nodded. "Not the best time for a casual hello. Uh, Tina?" he called back up at the ledge, hinting at there being a situation down here in which he might need her help. At least he hoped that his little shout could convey all that, while he kept his eyes on the two seemingly enraged Psyduck.

Christina, only just recovering from the shake that had gone through the cave, some reverberations still moving through the rocks, didn't need Ab calling her to realize the direness of the situation. "Go, Deen, I'll catch up!" She called down to him.

Reaching to her belt, she grabbed the ball containing the Haunter she had caught earlier, letting him out. He blinked a little, flashing Christina a grin, crossing his arms over his... uh, 'chest'.

"Hey, I, uh... know this is kind of rushed, but I need your help. I need to get over there. Can you help me?" She told him, pointing over at the two Psyducks at the cave floor. She could probably climb down, but she figured this was quicker.

The Haunter looked around, seeming a little surprised at all of the stuff going on, but let out a snicker, clapping his hands together once before offering them to Christina.

She smiled brightly and grabbed them, happy that he was willing to help her without her even giving him a name yet. She almost immediately regret her decision, however, as he spun around, his disembodied hands grabbing hers and promptly lifting her off of the cliff. Instead of gently lowering her down, he sped towards the two Psyducks and the kids in a downwards diagonal manner, leaving her flailing in his grip and letting out a surprised shriek as she flew over Aberdeen's head.

Ab couldn't help but smile in some kind of twisted pride at her way of getting down from the ledge being crazier than his, but the Psyduck turned around to the new threat from above. With another pulse from their glowing eyes, the cave rumbled again, and a couple of stalactites suddenly fell down from above. They narrowly missed the trainers but unfortunately made Haunter cringe enough to misplace his thoughts for a moment and let go of Christina. The girl fell down into the river with a loud splash and a squeal, followed by some panicked splashing. Fortunately, it wasn't very deep and the stream wasn't too strong.

"What kind of attack is that?" Aberdeen wondered after seeing that Tina was momentarily fine, him and Terribolt steadying each other to not fall over anew. "I thought they were water types!"

"IT'S YOU!" a voice came from across the river. It was Donald McCarthey, finally having recognized the trainer he tutored in the Violet Academy.

"Yes of course it's me, but what attack is it?" Ab called back impatiently.

"Didn't you have a pokédex? Look it up! Ah, but it's probably a directed Psyshock. Psychic in nature but does physical damage, for example to the cave!" Donald groaned. Jamie just crouched beside him.

"Psychic, eh? And, somehow I take it these pokémon aren't your buddies."

"Not our buddies at all!" Donald agreed.

But Ab hesitated when he saw the yellow ducks diving into the river, on their way to Christina. "Tina, incoming!"

Christina spluttered as she surfaced again, wiping her wet hair out of her eyes, seething inwardly due to her being drenched a second time in two days. She snapped back as Aberdeen called to her and she saw the Psyducks diving into the water.

Luckily, the Haunter had now caught up with Christina, recieving a half-glare from his trainer, to which he simply grinned sheepishly and shrugged his shoulders apologetically. The appearance of the Ghost-type caused the semi-submerged Psyducks to pause in their advance, giving Christina time to back a little away while still being thigh-deep in water.

"Haunter, hold them back! Hypnosis!"

The Haunter grinned wickedly as he turned to the Psyducks watching the two in front of them as his eyes began pulsating purple, one of the ducks' eyes fluttering before falling completely shut, leaving it floating in the water. The other, however, sat a straight course for Christina.

"Ah, change of tactics," Aberdeen concluded. "Chocolate!"

His starter pokémon came out of his pokéball and landed just by the soggy riverside in the half-darkness.

"Vine Whip! On Psyduck!"

Chocolate wasted no time. With his now evolved and stronger whips, he slammed into the swimming duck hard enough to kick it up into the air... Looking dangerously close to landing on top of the girl in the water.

"Ooh hang on!" Ab said and thought quickly. "Catch it, Chocolate!"

The Vine Whips grabbed Psyduck's leg just before its head bumped into Christina's from above. But just as they let out relieved breaths, the other Psyduck seemed to stir in its floating sleep.

Letting out a sigh of relief as the Psyduck was caught, Christina sent Deen a grin and a thumbs up before making her way towards the side of the river, trudging through the water with alot of effort.

"Oh..." Donald began, having moved closer to the battle on the other side of the river. "Sleep induced by a hostile attack hasn't seemed to calm its headache."

"Headache?" Aberdeen said, his eyes darting between the Psyducks and his own pokémon.

"Yeah, our little... Argument earlier must have agitated them. Psyduck is dangerous when its headache gets too bad!"

"So basically... We shouldn't want to hit them even more and make it even worse," Ab said and took a deep breath. "Right."

He motioned to Chocolate, who tossed the duck he was holding into the other one with a big splash of greenish water. Unfortunately, the half asleep Psyduck had already launched another psychic wave that made the cave rumble even worse than before. Taking help from both Terribolt and Chocolate to stay stable, Aberdeen hurriedly took out two empty pokéballs from his bag and tossed them towards the water pokémon before they could completely get up and collect themselves again.

The balls hit their targets and sucked in both pokémon, but then they landed in the river and started to slowly float away with the stream.

"Yeah!" Ab called out in victory, but he was hardly heard over the roaring cave. "Ouch, something tells me we should get out of here!" he yelled a little louder and spun around to try and spot Christina in the dim light from the ceiling and the Flaaffy's crackling fur.

Christina had managed to just get out of the water, staggering a little from the rumblings still going on, not even bothering with squeezing out water of her clothes at this point.

"Yeah, it seems like the cave is kind of unstable... let's get out of here as quickly as pos- WHAT?"

She spun around to glare at the Haunter who had been prodding her shoulder with a finger ever since she got out of the water. Now that she looked at him, his usual, playful expression was gone, replaced with a look of worry as he pointed up into the ceiling behind her.

Christina turned around and looked up, her eyes widening as just as she looked up, she saw a massive stalagtite cracking off, heading straight for Aberdeen, who didn't seem to have noticed it.

"Deen, look out!"

"It's alright," Aberdeen called back with a smile, thinking that the cave was calming down now. "I caught the ducks!"

Without having wasted anytime, Christina had sprinted up to Deen, thrusting her hands out and shoving them against his chest to push him back, just as the stalagtite came crashing down with a loud roar, a slight dustcloud raising up around them.

Aberdeen fell flat onto his back and lost his breath for a moment, but he still struggled to get up as quickly as he can to try and grasp what had just happened.

There was a lot of dust surrounding both him and the girl, shielding them from the boys on the other side of the river, but he could see her. He could see her red hair sprayed over the rubble as she lay face down. The stalactite had hit her instead of him, as it should have. And she wasn't moving.

For one deadly silent second, Ab just stared and stopped trying to breathe at all. Then, his senses vaguely detected something flying past his ear. A black disc in the shape of a U. It's eye glowed as the stunned Ab looked into it, and suddenly he felt incredibly nauseous.

A flash of light enveloped everything, in the blink of an eye.

Next thing he knew, he felt Christina's arms push him aside again, and then heard the crash of the pointy boulder as it hit the floor once more. Coughing in the new dust cloud and having hit his back just like before, Ab felt extremely confused as he looked back at the crash site as fast as he could.

But there was no girl there now. Instead, she was lying on the ground beside him, both arms around his upper body protectively. Ab couldn't help but stare up into her face, eyes wider than ever. Hadn't he just seen...? But...

Blinking her eyes open, Christina glanced back at the stalagtite and let out a deep breath of relief, her grip on Ab loosening up as she sent him a smile. "That was a bit too close for comfort. Sorry about that. You okay, Deen?"

He kept staring at her, a hundred thoughts running through his mind as they crawled up into a sitting position. One of the thoughts made him reach out and grab her arm before she could pull away completely. He looked at it as if wanting to make sure that she was really there.

"Yeah..." he said slowly. "Comfortable. I mean, too close, yes. Too..." He shook his head to try and get a grip on himself. "Sorry. Are you alright?"

Christina raised a brow, looking at him with an oddly curious look on her face. "Uh, yeah, I suppose. Are you sure you didn't hit your head? You seem a little... out of it. Come on."

She proceeded to smile, pushing herself to a stand, half-covered in water and dust from the broken stalagtite. None the less, she extended a hand to help him up without worrying about brushing herself off first.

Ab cast one glance at the dirty mess she really was and let out a relieved little smile as he took her hand and got up as well.

That was when Jamie chose to practically scream from across the river, making both trainers jump.

"That was -so- cool!!" he called out, grinning brightly while elbowing Donald. "Did you see that? The fight was amazing, but the way she dove in and saved him without a second thought for her own life! Amazing!" He raised a hand to give the two a thumbs-up, the grin still stuck to his face.

Donald rubbed his midsection but nodded thoughtfully. "Indeed amazing. The way Mr Montany maneuvered his pokémon in battle and captured not just one but two pokémon just like that. He has improved since we last met. I think I shall have to study him more closely from now on."

Aberdeen only shook his head at the antics of the two guys before he remembered something. As if on cue, Unown U zoomed down in front of him and gave him a blink with its single eye. Aberdeen didn't know what to think. Christina had saved his life. He thought he had seen something else... But he decided not to ponder it for now. Christina's hand was still in his, and he didn't feel like letting it go quite yet.

"Let's just get out of here now, yeah?" he asked her.

After giving the teens on the other side of the river an odd glance, Christina looked back to Aberdeen, smiling as she gave a firm nod. "Let's."

Suddenly, Aberdeen's eyes widened and he gasped.

"The pokéballs!" he exclaimed and ran back to the river, seeing the two orbs slowly moving away from them. Nothing to do but to jump in the river too. Being dry and clean didn't seem to be the theme of this journey anyways.

Melody and Vincent had spent some time looking for Napoleon and Excalibur. Unfortunately for the duo, neither of their Pokémon were anywhere to be found. It was not long before the duo would eventually find themselves at the entrance to a rather large cave. Melody frowned at the sight. The thought of moving further out from the route while knowing that someone out there had her Buziel did not do much for making the girl want to progress further along on their journey.

"We're not really gonna be headin' in there, are we?" she asked, glancing over at Vincent. "What about Napoleon? And your Honedge? If we move on now we might not ever find them! I'm sure they're somewhere on this route, we just need to look around a bit more!"

"OR. They are in that cave. A cave is a good way to cover tracks, especially if someone did steal them. We...rather you, almost tore apart the route looking for them. The cave has a good a chance as anything," Vincent said, practically dismissing Melody. "You know, it's bad when I am the optimistic one. Lighten up. We'll find them," he continued, slugging her lightly on the shoulder. Really, part of him just wanted to move on, but another part genuinely believed what he was saying. The route they were on was long, but he didn't see a lot of hiding places. The cave, it had plenty. If someone had their Pokemon, he...or she would be in this cave.

Melody still seemed a bit hesitant, but nodded in agreement anyways. "I guess you're right. Let's just... make sure to keep our eyes peeled, yeah?"

She smiled weakly, before stepping inside the cave. It was rather dark inside, with a somewhat moist feeling hanging in the air. The faint sound of running water and an occasional dripping could be heard. A shiver ran down her back as these sounds filled her ear. "Wow... This place almost feels a bit creepier than the ruins did. Kinda wish we had a flashlight or a fire-type with us, you know?"

Vincent chuckled: "Just try not to get kidnapped by a bunch of Pokemon again." Vincent took a slight lead, as he felt his night vision would be good enough to get them pretty far without needing any sort of light, though he really did wish he had a fire type. Something like a Growlithe. He always wanted one. Whereas Melody appeared to be far more uncomfortable with Union Cave, Vincent found everything soothing. It cleared his head if anything, something he couldn't say had happened in the past few days.

Melody herself happened to be walking rather close to Vincent. Her eyes were focused on following the tall boy as best as possible, so the girl was not actually paying attention to where she was going. She only snapped back to reality when her foot came down on the ground, just in time for a growl-like yelping noise to be heard. It surprised Melody that she quickly grabbed Vincent's arm, spinning around to put herself behind him as best as possible.

"W-What was that?" the girl asked, peeking out from behind Vincent.

She soon found her answer staring right at her. Melody had stepped on Pokémon... a Pokémon's tail to be exact. The Pokémon in question was a small, brown, alligator-looking creature. It had black stripes all down his back with black markings around its eyes to make it look like it was wearing some sort of mask.

"What kinda Pokémon is that?" Melody asked, glancing from it, to Vincent, and then back again. "It kinda reminds me of Blaine's Totodile... At least, looks-wise."

"I know this one," Vincent said. He recognized it because of all the TV his brother and sister would watch. "It's...uhh...Sandile or something like that. Looks a lot...cuter than I remember."

Melody looked down at the Sandile, slowly coming out from behind Vincent to get a better look. It was not an ugly looking Pokémon, but Melody was not sure if she would have gone so far out of her way to say it was cute. Returning her attention back to the Sandile, she noticed the creature was and had been staring at her for this entire little exchange, almost as if it was expecting something from her.

"What does it want?" Melody asked. She took a step closer to the Sandile. "Look, I'm sorry about stepping on your tail, okay? It won't happen again."

As she stepped closer, the Sandile suddenly snapper at her. This caused the girl to jump back in surprise, a panicked expression quickly gracing her features.

Vincent put his foot in between the Sandile and Melody. "Calm down buddy. The lady apologized," he said at the Sandile, being significantly bigger than the Pokemon. "I think he likes you," he whispered back at Melody with heavy sarcasm seething from his mouth. "Well, let's get a move on then. I am tired of looking at its big eyes. It probably has evil intentions and...other stuff."

"Ah... Alright then," Melody replied.

The girl turned and waved at the Sandile before starting to follow behind Vincent. However, the duo didn't get to far before the Sandile started to follow behind them slowly. Without warning, the creature walked up to Melody, gently chomping down and pulling on one of the shoestrings to her sneakers, which was promptly followed by the girl tripping and falling flat on her face.

"Ow... What was that for?" Melody groaned, turning to look at the Sandile from over her shoulder.

"Falling over your own feet again, Melody?" Vincent sighed. He offered a hand to help her up, before observing her shoes. "Tying them tends to prevent falling."

"They were tied, Vinny!" Melody said back. She pointed down at the Sandile, who seemed to be grinning about the whole situation. "He pulled the lace!"

Vincent frowned. "I never took you for someone to blame your problems on other people, Melody." He placed his hands on his hips and then crossed them, turning away from her with a sheepish grin.

"W-What... But I... I didn't..." Melody stammered. The girl glanced back and forth between Vincent and the Sandile. She really did not seem to be gaining as much enjoyment from this little incident as they were. Slowly, the girl pulled herself and crossed her arms over her chest. "Seriously, why is he following us?"

"Maybe he likes you. I mean, likes you." Vincent shrugged his shoulders. "Why don't you try catching him or something?"

"...Catching him?" Melody asked back, glancing down at the Sandile. A slightly nervous looking smile came to Melody's lips as she rubbed the back of her head. "That always is an option, but... You know, um..."

"What is it...?" Vincent said, blinking at Melody's sudden shift in demeanor.

"Um... I really... I've never actually caught a Pokémon before," the girl admitted, a faint blush gracing her cheeks as she looked in the opposite direction of the boy. "So, truth be told from a certain standpoint, you could probably say I don't... really know how."

Vincent's jaw almost dropped but more he was in a state of shock. "So how in the blue hell did you get your team then!? You know what? I don't wanna know." Vincent sighed again. "Okay, I guess I am going to have to teach you how. It's really simple. You fight the Pokemon with your own and when it looks weak and tired, you throw a ball at it." Vincent was a bit animated in his explanation, but only to make his point clear. His grimace was apparent but it was more frustration at the idea her not knowing how to catch Pokemon and not her as a person. "Any questions?"

"I guess not..." Melody replied, watching the boy with mild interest. She honestly never saw anything explained in such a manner before. A part of her wished she had some way to record that moment. "Just battle, weaken, and throw..."

She glanced back over at the Sandile once more. The little alligator still staring up at her with a bit of excitement in his eyes. Melody wondered if the little Pokémon had some sort of idea what she and Vincent were discussing. Regardless, she knew that she was not going to get anywhere by just standing around. Reaching down to her belt, Melody unclipped one of the Pokéballs hooked to it. She tossed the ball out and from a familiar beam of light, Hawk the Taillow was released. The small bird stretched his wings for a moment, before taking sight of the Sandile before him.

"Alright, Hawk... Time to make ourselves a new friend! Are you ready?" Melody inquired. The Taillow squawked in response, his eyes lighting up at the prospect of a battle. "Alright then, start things off with Quick Attack!"

Hawk took aim at Sandile and quickly dove towards the Pokémon as fast as it could. The bird crashed right into the wild Sandile, knocking the ground-gator back some. However, the Sandile was ready to counter right away. As the Taillow began to fly back to get some space between himself and the wild Pokémon, Sandile managed to chomp down on Taillow's tail, earning a loud squawk of pain from the bird.

"We definitely need to avoid those chompers of his, Hawk! Try to knock him back some more with a Steel Wing attack!" the girl ordered.

Hawk chirped in agreement and dove down towards Sandile once more. A metallic-like shine appeared on the Taillow's right wing as it swooped down, preparing to knock the little alligator right in the top of his head. Sandile launched a surprise attack of his own, though. The wild Pokémon quickly swiped his tail in the dirt of the cave floor, kicking up enough dirt to get into Taillow's eyes. This stopped the bird right in his tracks, giving the Sandile more than enough time to get another chance to take a bite at Hawk, this time right in his wing. The Sandile bit down hard, holding onto the bird's wing despite the commotion Hawk started to stir up.

"Wow... He's good..." Melody whispered, watching how the Sandile was quite capable of holding off Hawk. "Quick, Hawk! Steel Wing again! Knock it away!"

Hawk's left wing quickly took on a shine to that his right wing did previously. As hard as the bird could, he slammed that wing right into Sandile, causing the wild Pokémon to quickly release the grip that his teeth had on Hawk's wing. Hawk slowly dropped to the ground, his right wing clearly injured.

"Maybe I should call him back and let Blossom take over..." Melody wondered, quickly reaching for the bird's Pokéball. She took aim at Hawk, preparing to call the Taillow back into his ball. However, the bird Pokémon quickly glanced over his shoulder at Melody. Despite the pain he was clearly in, the Taillow still seemed determined to finish this fight... It almost looked as if the bird was having fun. "A-Alright then, Hawk. Let's keep it up, then. Use Focus Energy!"

Hawk began to stare down the wild Sandile the best he could. Pain was still evident in the bird by watching his movements, but the Taillow clearly intended on finishing this battle. The Sandile seemed to be staring down Hawk in return. It was quite tense, given the situation. Melody actually felt a small tingle run up her back from watching the battle play out. Still, she knew that Hawk would not last much longer. It was best to try and finish this battle up as quickly as possible.

"Now, Hawk! Steel Wing him one more time!" Melody shouted.

The Taillow took off flying as best he could towards the Wild Sandile. At that same time, the Sandile began to lunge forward, his large mouth opening up to go for another bite at the Taillow. The bird flew straight at the Sandile, heading right for the creature's sharp teeth. However right at the last moment, Hawk managed to gain some altitude. The bird swooped over head, before diving down and slamming his left wing right into the wild Sandile's noggin. This caused the wild Pokémon to fall back, skidding on the ground before coming to a stop. Melody looked at the Sandile carefully, quickly noticing that he seemed to be out like a light... or at the very least, stunned from the power of the blow he was just dealt.

Taking hold of an empty Pokéball, Melody quickly launched the ball forward. It smacked right into the Sandile's belly, before bouncing up and pulling him inside of it. She watched as the ball fell to the ground, before it slowly started to shake. Eventually, the shaking would come to a gradual stop. Melody simply stood there silently, her eyes fixated on the entire scene before her.

"Um. That means you caught it you know?" Vincent said, pushing Melody towards the still Pokeball.

Melody staggered forward. Slowly, she approached the ball. Her hand was shaking as she picked it off the ground.

"I caught it... I caught a Pokémon..." Melody said, her voice barely above a whisper. A smile gradually came to her face. It started out small, before quickly growing bright and proud. The girl quickly turned to face Vincent. "We did it, Vinny! I made my first catch!"

Vincent shook his head and let a small smile crack his face. "Yeah, you did. Surprised it took this long though." Vincent walked a little closer to her. "So what are you going to name it?"

Melody took a moment to recall the tired Hawk into his ball. She gave the bird a small word of thanks, before placing his Pokéball back onto her belt to let him get some proper rest. "A name... Hmmm... I think I'll call him... Franky! Nice name, right?!"

"Franky?! What kind of name is that?!" Vincent said, his face twisted in confusion.

"Well... It's just... You know..." Melody began, trying to think of something to respond with. "I don't really know... I kinda liked the sound of it, really."

"Whatever. It's your Pokemon. Not mine," Vincent said, nodding. He still didn't like the name. It didn't sound as super as Melody tends to be with names. Shrugging his shoulders, he made his deeper into the cave with no particular direction other than forward. As serene it was, he wanted out.

Melody clutched Franky's Pokéball tightly and quickly hurried to catch up to Vincent. She was not much of a fan of this place as the boy, and was honestly hoping that they'd be able to get out before too much longer. With any luck, the exit would just be a few minutes away...

"Lost!"

" I guess this is it." Alexis pointed out as she and her two companions reached the entrance to what looked like a cave, Union Cave as Alexis found out after asking at the Pokemon Center she had stopped at earlier that day. The girl turned around and threw her bag on the ground, then looked in the distance as a swift breeze took her by surprise and blew right before her face. It was a perfect day to be out in the open, the sun was shining high above them and the landscape was simply refreshing to watch. The girl frowned at the thought of these things. " Great! We're going be stuck wandering in the cave for Arceus knows how long, while the weather is perfect for a walk."

"Ralts!!" the little psychic pokemon said as she pulled her trainers leg. She was pointing towards the girl's bag.

"What are you up to there?" Alexis said following the direction Mina pointed at. She was looking at her other pokemon, her Skiddo, that somehow managed to get his head stuck in her bag. "Let's get you out of there." She said giggling as she pulled the goat pokemon and saw him munching on a sandwich Alexis had prepared, among several others, to last them until they reach the next city. "You know you could have just asked?" Alexis remarked as she was arranging her bag.

"Doo!" the grass pokemon replied with a smug look on his face, brushing her idea off as to let Alexis know that his way of doing things is way more challenging.

"We'll see about that mister!" she said teasingly. "But your little gimmick gave me and idea. Let's spend a little more time here, before we go in the cave. " Seeing as Pan got hungry and managed to invite himself into her bag, Alexis decided to have their lunch a bit earlier than planned. She reached her hand into her bag and pulled out two more sandwiches and passed one to Mina, who smiled as a thank you to her trainer then started munching the crust of the sandwich. As Alexis started her as well, Pan had already finished his and now had placed himself next to Alexis on the grass and closed his eyes letting the sun fall down on his grassy mane. " At least we get to enjoy this weather a little bit more. " Alexis thought to herself as she stretched herself on the grass. Soon enough the relaxing feeling of the grass, combined with the gentle touch of the wind and sun made the girl fall asleep.

~~~~~~
After about an hour or so the girl opened her eyes slowly, only to find out both her pokemon on top of her watching her closely. " If you were people I would find this so creepy." She said stretching her arms up in the air. "Ok. Down you go, let's get it over with this cave before night falls." Picking up her bag and putting it over her shoulder. With her pokemon following alongside her she turned towards the cave and started walking.
As she entered, the rays of sun started to fade away into the darkness of the cave, however the cave wasn't completely obscure. There were lanterns that had been hung on the side of the walls every few meters to help travellers like Alexis find their way around. "There sure are a lot of ways to go around here." She thought to herself, noticing many forks and side paths that sprung from the main one. But, the bright side was that even if you strayed away from the main path you would somehow end up at the exit of the cave sooner or later.
" Hey Pan don't wander ahead too much!" the girl pointed out seeing as, opposed to Mina who was quietly walking next to her trainer, Pan was adventurously walking ahead of them further and further. "Guess he just likes acting like the leader." Alexis thought to herself watching Pan turn around from time to time to see if Alexis and Mina were still following. He was her first Pokemon she had caught, and the only one up to this point since her journey began. When she first saw him, Alexis immediately took an interest to him. Among all pokemon she encountered, Pan was the most daring and righteous she had seen. He revealed those traits on the day Alexis caught him as right before their battle he had helped defend a family of Spinarak from a flock of Pidgeys.
"Ralts ralts!" Mina cried pointing at the ceiling above them.
"What is it?" Alexis replied averting her eyes from Pan who had just taken a corner further ahead. She looked up and saw a swarm of Zubats that were quietly sleeping away from the brightness of the lanterns. "Wow. Wouldn't want to be here when they get up that's for sure." She said in a low voice towards Mina who replied with a grin.
"SKIDDOOOOO!!!" a loud yell came from where Pan had reached. Alexis was about to start running when she heard even louder noises coming from above her head. The Zubats had awoken and for sure on the wrong side of the bed. The girl quickly grabbed Mina and plunged on the ground as the bat like pokemon swarmed above them and flew all over the place in every possible path they could find.
A few minutes later, the shrieking had dimmed and the bats were nowhere in sight. However, Alexis couldn't just sit down and relax. The cry from before came from Pan and it sounded like he was in some kind of danger and since then Alexis did nothing but waste time defending against the swarm of Zubats. She called Mina back into her pokeball and quickly started running ahead with Mina's pokeball still in her hand. As she took the corner she was taking deep breaths of air, but for a few seconds her whole body froze as she saw nothing, nothing but a long path that seemed to go nowhere. Silly as it may sound, that nothingness was the trigger for Alexis's sudden stiffness, the road that was empty should have had one thing. PAN! The road was too long for her pokemon to have gone out of sight even if she had been a bit late, at least for a pokemon of his size that is. Something was strange and Alexis, who had slowly recovered from her shock, was determined to get to the bottom of it. She started running again, running as fast as she could towards the only direction she could, forward.
The path seemed to go on forever, giving the impression that with every step the distance was stretching even further. But Alexis didn't care, as long as the path led her to her pokemon, she was willing to run as much as it took. Soon enough, her effort paid off and the path had reached a fork in the road. But, with two ways to go Alexis was faced with a tough decision to make, if she chose the wrong path she would get further away from finding her pokemon.
"Wait a minute!" the girl exclaimed stopping in her tracks in front of the path that diverged to the left. Alexis crouched down and was now looking at a pair of tire tracks that for sure weren't supposed to be there. At least they weren't on the right side of the path. She thought a few seconds then got up and started running once more, taking the path on the left thinking to herself. "This is my only lead!"
The search continued, with Alexis rushing through the cave without a moment to spare to search for any wild pokemon that my peak her interest, but who could blame her. She followed the tracks as they made their way through the cave going from one path to the other and soon enough the narrow trail widened into a very large room in the cave that had a lot of rock formations that spread around until the edge of a pool of crystal clean water. Despite all of this, what caught Alexis's attention wasn't the unique scenery, but the cages that were being carried into a big truck by some shady looking people. The girl entered the room quietly and hid behind a large boulder, sneaking a peek at the men, trying to get a better view. There were about three guys that were loading the cages into the truck, while another was sitting on one of the cages that were waiting to be taken to the vehicle and giving orders.
"I think these guys are poachers." she came to the conclusion after remembering a documentary she saw a few months ago where a Ranger filmed his duty while taking care of a bunch of poachers that tried to sell rare pokemon. "And from the looks of it that's their leader." Looking at the guy on the cage.
"Hey boss! The first batch is loaded. We'll send the next truck in a few minutes." One of the subordinates said approaching his boss.
"Step on it!" he shouted getting down from the cage and taking a look inside it. " The faster we move from here, the faster we get our money." He added looking at the pokemon inside the cage.
"Skiddo!" the goat pokemon growled as he rammed himself into the cage trying to hit the boss.
"Feisty one!" he said giving a smuck look at the caged pokemon.
"That's Pan!" Alexis almost shouted as the pokemon had rammed the side of the cage. Good thing she reacted quick and managed to cover her mouth with her hand. She gave out a big sigh of relief at the sight of the pokemon, it was safe….or at least not harmed. However, now wasn't the moment to take a break, fact was her pokemon was in the hands of poachers and the only thing that kept her away from him were a steel cage and a few meters. Plus, the fact that the poachers were there didn't really improve the situation. " But from what they said they should leave soon enough with the rest." She thought to herself. "Wait! If they leave, I can get to Pan. But what will happen to the pokemon in the truck, they'll be long gone before I get Pan out of there. On the other hand what can I do now, there are four guys and only one of me and Mina." Alexis thought as she got back under cover. She was indeed conflicted as to what to do next, she wanted to save Pan as fast as possible, but she couldn't leave the other pokemon at the mercy of the poachers.
In spite of all her debate that took place in her mind, time was the one who settled the matter. Alexis took too long to think the matter over and the truck started to move with all the subordinates in it. The boss had been left behind to keep watch on the remaining captures. It took Alexis by surprise, and it was a bit of a blow to her righteous code that the truck was now nowhere in sight. She closed her eyes, took a deep breath and resolved to take matters into her own hands and start moving. First she would get her pokemon and the remaining pokemon out and then she would think of the ones that had been taken away. She called Mina out of her pokeball and explained to her the situation they were in.
After a few minutes Alexis was on the edge of the boulder with Mina by her side with a determined look on her face. The girls had a plan, all that was left was to see if it would work. "Ok Mina use Confusion like we discussed." Alexis said and shifted her sight from Mina to the boss who was trying to rest on one of the cages. Mina's eyes started to glow blue as she stretched her arms forward towards the guard. Alexis noticed that the boss had a key hanging around his belt which most likely had been used to lock the cages, so due to Mina's psychic abilities, Alexis decided to snatch the keys away. The key got cloaked in a dim blue light and slowly detached titself from the poacher's belt and started floating towards Alexis's direction.
"Got it!" she said to herself as she grabbed the key that got into her reach. Then, as silent as she could, she grabbed Mina and put her on her shoulder then made her way towards Pan's cage, sneaking from rock to rock, taking cover when the poacher turned their way. All things went good and soon enough Alexis was next to Pan's cage. She caught her pokemon's attention and put her finger straight on her lips, signaling that he should keep quiet. Leaving Mina behind the rock, Alexis got out and slowly made her way in front of the cage. She fit the key into the keyhole and with a tiny click the door to the cage opened. Pan ran straight into Alexis's arms who embraced him as hard as she could.
"Well isn't this sweet! Trying to play the heroine." a grouchy noise came from behind Alexis's back. The girl turned around reluctant to find out the source. Without even a second thought she kicked the poacher in the knee and ran to the left, throwing the key in the direction where Mina was.
"You damn brat! You think you're playing games with me!" the poacher yelled after recovering from his numbness in his leg. "I'll show you games! Onix come out and play with those two!" he said and took a pokeball from his belt and threw it towards Alexis.
"Now that's a huge pokemon!" were her words as the rock type serpent emerged from its pokeball. She looked at the cages then turned towards Pan. " Guess we'll have to battle him!" a large grin taking over her face. Pan jumped in front of her and trampled the ground beneath. He was anxious to give the poacher a bit of payback for taking him by surprise and imprisoning him.
"Onix smash them with a Tackle!" the poacher ordered and without a moment to spare the Onix blasted itself towards Pan leaving tracks behind him as he moved. Giving the fair distance Alexis had enough time to react and told Pan to jump to the side as Onix tried to tackle him.
"Nicely done! Now follow up with a Razor Leaf!" The grass pokemon swung its mane and launched multiple razor-sharp leaves towards Onix hitting it dead on. The rock pokemon cringed as the leaves came one after the other.
"Suck it up and use Rock Throw!" were the poacher's words as soon as Pan's attack ended. The serpent pokemon immediately slammed its tail into the ground and sent a pile of rock towards Pan which sent him flying a few meters back. Alexis closed her eyes at the impact, as if she had felt the blow. Luckily, Pan wasn't down with just one hit, he got back up and brushed the dust away ready to continue the battle. But before Alexis could give a command, the poacher ordered another Rock Throw.
"Not this time!" Alexis yelled as a pile of rocks were coming once again towards her pokemon. " Pan use Vine Whip and smash them down!" and without a moment to spare Pan conjured two vines from its mane and swiftly smacked them into the oncoming rocks, knocking them down one by one.
"Well done missy, but you fell for my trap!" the poacher said with a big smirk on his face. "Bind! Now!!! While Alexis had been focused on the previous attack, Onix made its way near Pan and now wrapped its body around him, crushing the poor grass pokemon with its force.
"He's one persistent dude, I'll give him that!" Alexis said to herself. "But we're not out of this yet. Pan Vine Whip again on his head! " she yelled hoping that Pan could at least get one vine out. The grass pokemon struggled but somehow managed to attach one of its vines to the horn on Onix's head. "Perfect! Now pull yourself up!" and just like an acrobat Pan sprung itself out of the bind and on top of Onix's head.
"Get that thing off of you!" the poacher followed , but before Onix could move and inch Alexis smiled deviously.
"Let's finish this! Pan use Leech Seed!" Pan shot several seeds on top of the Onix which quickly grew into vines that latched themselves around Onix's body rendering it immobile. The vines started sapping his last bit of energy, while giving all the nutrients to Pan. In a matter of seconds, Onix fell on the ground unconscious. The poacher couldn't believe his eyes, a damn girl with a tiny little Skidoo had beaten him. He watched as Pan climbed down from the Onix then puffed some sand with its back leg towards the Onix like a Growlith after it buries a bone.
"Why you!!!" the poacher shouted. "You may have won, but I'll still have the rest of the pokemon."
"Oh you mean those pokemon!" Alexis said with a giggle. The poacher turned towards the cages and was shocked to see that every one of them had been opened and the pokemon were missing, the only one left being Mina who was sitting on top of one. Alexis told Mina that after she would get Pan out of the cage she had to use the key and unlock the rest of the pokemon and set them free. Mina followed the plan as told and, while the poacher and Alexis were battling, she managed to open every cage and still get to watch the last part of the battle. "Nicely done guys!" she said to both of her pokemon. Alexis beckoned Mina to come back, so the little psychic pokemon used Teleport and transported herself onto Alexis's shoulder.
"Damn brat! You think you're really smart! Wait until my comrades get he….!" But before the poacher could end his sentence he felt a hand that grabbed his left shoulder.
VI.I :: Union Cave
Initium Valebat
A tunnel at the end of a long road devoid of any significant human settlements, stretching high above the one reprieve available to Pokémon Trainers along the path; Union Cave was the next major obstacle during this journey, and Tryphosa intended to conquer it.
Or at least that's what she told herself. She didn't mind caves, and she adored pokémon, so she didn't think it would prove to be a problem. But this place was. The large Pokemon Center that stood before the cave may have been secluded, but it still felt crowded. It was suffocating. The nurse was kind and understanding, but that wasn't comfort enough with all these people around. Tryphosa needed to get out of here as soon as possible.
As soon as her pokémon were healed and ready to go, she thanked the nurse and rushed out of the building. It was a nice day, but there were people dwelling about the Pokémon Center, so she immediately jogged towards Union Cave. She didn't slow down until she judged that she was far enough away from the other trainers.
She looked up at the entrance of the cave, gazing into its dim halls. She recalled that the lower portion of the cave was filled with water, so it would probably be cold and damp inside. She pulled out a poke ball and let out Aivin, her Grotle. He had only recently evolved from a Turtwig, and she was still learning about him in this new form. One thing she'd learned already was that he didn't mind ferrying other creatures around. He seemed to enjoy it, actually. She got onto his back and sat down, and he started into the cave at a leisurely pace.
As a Grotle, Aivin's shell now grew two large bushes, which were decorated with a few berries. She'd read a bit about Grotle, and she knew that other small pokémon had a habit of nesting on them and eating the fruits and acorns that they grew. She'd also read that some pokémon took up permanent residence on Torterra, so she was interested in seeing how Aivin would turn out once he'd reached his final stage. That wouldn't be for a while, though.
Since starting her journey, she'd captured three pokémon besides Aivin: Ariel, the graceful but naïve Buizel; Djali, the energetic Skiddo; and Lara, the enigmatic Natu. She was still getting to know them all, but it didn't take her long to befriend pokémon. It's not like she was any good at making human friends, so she had to excel somewhere.
Tryphosa looked around. The slow dripping of water in the distance created a lonely yet soothing echo that threatened to lull her to sleep. A few Geodude and Graveler slept along the walls, a number of Zubat and Golbat hung from the ceiling, and a couple of Psyduck waddled aimlessly next to a pond. She enjoyed this place. At least she wasn't claustrophobic.
She leaned back on Aivin's shell. She honestly felt like she could just go to sleep. As she started to get a little too relaxed, however, Lara suddenly appeared on one of Aivin's shrubs. The little Natu tilted her head—more accurately her whole body—and chirped at her trainer.
"What?" Tryphosa asked, scratching the Natu by her crest. "Just want some attention?"
Lara settled on Tryphosa's chest, going straight to sleep. That was when Tryphosa noticed a slight upward trajectory in Aivin's path. She glanced up, wondering about the sudden slope.
"Aivin, what's—" She jerked upwards as she realized what was going on. "Aivin, sweetie, these aren't rocks you're walking on. They're an O—" Before she could finish, they were all being lifted high into the air. Crap. Accidentally hitching a ride on a random Onix hadn't been in her plans for the day.
"Jump, jump, jump!" Tryphosa yelled, clinging to Aivin's shell as Lara fluttered to the ground in a panic. Aivin pushed off from the Onix and fell about ten feet to the ground, tripping and causing Tryphosa to fall into the dirt. She started forward on all fours before forcing herself onto her feet as she created some distance between herself and the Onix, Aivin following swiftly behind her.
She whirled around and took a look at the large rock snake. It towered above them. It didn't seem particularly angry, but she could see that it was not amused at having been trampled by a large turtle and his trainer. It flicked its tail, which did a fair amount of damage to the wall beside them, causing dust and debris to fill the air. Tryphosa let out a few coughs and ducked to the side. She couldn't see anything, and so she wasn't able to stop herself from tripping off of a small ledge.
She dropped for a brief moment before landing in a pond. She panicked at first, but quickly surfaced and took a deep breath. She guessed that she'd fallen about fifteen feet. Falling seemed to be in, these last few moments. All the cool kids were doing it.
And so was her turtle, which she had to dive to the side to avoid as he made a huge splash in the spot where she had just been. Lara flew down a second later and perched on Aivin's back as he began to swim. She swam over to meet him, placed an arm over his shell and looked for a spot of dry land. She guessed that she had missed the stairs, taking a nice little dive instead, but there was a path of sorts on the opposite side of the pond.
Once she got out of the water, she took off her now soaked hoodie and pulled a brush out of her bag. Everything in her pack seemed to be mostly okay. Thank goodness for waterproof fabrics. She grabbed a dry change of clothes and quickly put them on, placing her wet outfit into a plastic bag and then into her backpack. She wrung out her hoodie to get it as dry as possible. It was still a bit damp when she was finished, so she opted to sling it over her shoulder rather than put it back on immediately.
"Now, what path are we one now?" She looked around, noticing a small cavern off to her right a ways. A cave within a cave? She felt like it was probably a law or something for trainers to explore such things, lest they never receive their exploration pin.
Now she wanted an exploration pin.
She made a note to find one and buy it as soon as possible. She motioned for Aivin and Lara to follow her as she stepped towards the cavern. From inside she could hear and odd metallic ringing, and the atmosphere felt a bit strange as she approached.
She glanced at Aivin. "So something tells me this place is dangerous, probably. But as a trainer and her partners, it's our job to do incredibly stupid things and hope to come out alive."
Aivin gave her a nod of approval. She turned forward and wandered into the cavern.
The moment she was inside, she could feel an instant shift in the air. Something about this place felt heavy. And what was that sound? She glanced up. Floating in the air above were a group of Beldum. They swarmed around the center of the cavern in strange patterns. Perhaps the area was magnetic? That might explain the weird feeling in the air. Then again, she wasn't much of a scientist.
"Beldum are pretty rare, right?" she asked aloud. "Perhaps I should catch one or two. Could be good for the pokedex. Maybe Charlie would like one? Though what could a Beldum do on a ranch, exactly?" Nothing. The answer was nothing. Perhaps float around and pick stuff up. So maybe the answer was something.
She decided to catch a couple to see what this something could be. She was pretty sure that, so long as you wrote it down, doing random things for the sake of finding out what the result of said random things would have was science. Maybe.
If it was, today she would become a scientist.
If it wasn't, oh well.
"Aivin, get their attention with a Razor Leaf, if you would be so kind."
Aivin gave a grunt of approval, launching a barrage of leaves at the Beldum. It caused them to scatter a bit, but it didn't really affect them otherwise.
She thought for a moment. She produced her other two poké balls and let out Ariel and Djali.
"Lara, use Night Shade. Ariel, Sonicboom. Djali, use . . . Leech Seed." The three pokémon complied. Lara released two beams of dark energy that struck near the center of the group of Beldum. A few of them fell a few feet and most others recoiled. They certainly felt that attack.
Ariel jumped and twisted in the air, loosing a sonic wave that cut through the air and further scattered the Beldum. Djali moved last, launching a Leech Seed at the Beldum closest to them. The attack connected and a series of vines instantly wrapped around the Steel-type, which rendered it immobile and caused it to fall into the water below.
Tryphosa hadn't though of that.
"Ariel, quickly get it before it drowns or something! Can it even drown? What the heck even is a Beldum? It's made of metal, so does it even need to breathe? Agh, just get it!" The otter dove into the water and disappeared. She emerged ten seconds later, the Beldum between her paws. It took the efforts of Djali and Aivin to get it on land. Ariel had managed to lift it thanks to the water, but beyond that it was far too heavy for her.
"Okay, this one seems mostly incapacitated. I think." The Beldum lay there, shaking angrily and still trapped in the vines. Tryphosa grabbed an empty poké ball and prepared to capture the metal arm thing, but she was suddenly assaulted by all the other metal arm things in the room, and they all only knew Take Down.
She flinched as the first Beldum slammed into her hand, knocking the poké ball away. Before she could react, a second one rammed into her arm, sending her spinning. A few slammed into her pokémon, and then another flew straight into her stomach. She doubled over and heaved. This hadn't been a good idea, though she had kind of known that from the start.
"Aiv . . . Aivin, grab the Beldum and let's . . . let's get out of here!" she choked out. Aivin quickly grabbed the trapped Beldum and placed it on his back, moving as swiftly as possible under the Beldum's weight to her side. Before Tryphosa could do anything else, a Beldum slammed into the side of her head, knocking her out cold.
This just wasn't her day.
The Mysterious White Beast
"Alright... so then... we DID go down this tunnel right? Or was it that one?" Blaine glanced about the darkened corridors with a frown, "I'm pretty sure we came in from this one. Though... the stone in that tunnel there does look suspiciously familiar..."
Derpy crossed his arms and closed his eyes in thought before snapping them open and raising a hand in the air dramatically before pointing down a completely different tunnel, "Croc!"
Blaine hung his head, "Oh great. Three possible tunnels we could have come down now."
"Don't worry, I have an magnificent idea," Morgan remarked in satisfaction. "Up for a round of eenie-meenie-miney-mo?"
Blaine just sighed, "Sure. I mean, it's basically guessing at this point."
"Alright, stand back," Morgan went forward to point her finger towards the separate tunnels. This time, things got serious. "Eenie, meenie, miney, mo, catch a teddiursa by the toe, if it stays, just sway and go, eenie meenie, mineeeey... mo! Aha!" Before she knew it, it looks like the choice was the middle. "The middle it is! How about it?"
Blaine looked out and shrugged, "I suppose so. Well, let's head out then. Better than staying here anyways." Derpy gurgled and quickly took off down the tunnel as Blaine sighed, "Well... how long before we get out you think?" He asked Morgan.
"Oh, until we grow wings and become action movie stars; I don't know?" Morgan replied. "I haven't even known about this place before you told me. We'll just have to see for ourselves, yes? Now come, lead the way, my oh faithful bodyguard!"
Blaine couldn't help but roll his eyes as he made his way further into the tunnel. He began to notice that unlike the other parts they had explored this one was actually getting more and more moist. Soon tiny beads of water dripped from the top as Blaine looked about, "Well... I guess we're nearing water or something." A Croconaw's cry echoed out from the deeper parts of the tunnel and Blaine shook his head, "Guess he found something."
"Ah, excellent!" Morgan praised with a smile. "Such a smart pokemon indeed! I dear say even my Lilpup couldn't even muster this! Now, what did he find? Treasure?"
Blaine led the way further on to find Derpy waiting patiently next to a statue. "Croc!" He said as he gestured at the ancient carving. Blaine walked up closer and then frowned. A light emanated from his pocket and he quickly pulled out his crystal that glowed a deep white. In an instant a white shine covered the statue before a loud rumbling echoed out. Next to the statue a part of the wall began to shake and then opened up to reveal a dark passage. "Well... this keeps getting better and better." He said softly. "Uh... Morgan you should stay out here."
"N-No way!" Morgan replied, flustered. "We might of found our way out of this place, now come on, make like a bad stop light and go on!"
Blaine frowned and then looked back at the statue. "... Haven't I see this before?" He walked up closer to it and looked it up and down. It seemed a bit familiar... nah, it couldn't be. He shook his head and sighed, "Okay, let's head down then. But if some flying eyeballs start poking against you don't come running to me." He went on down as Derpy obediently followed besides him. Eventually the small tunnel opened out and Blained glanced about in confusion.
A large body of water resided in the area with several rocky paths etched out around it. Up above glowing moss gave off enough light so that the water could reflect off of the various walls. "Interesting..." He said, "Like I said, be careful of any eyeballs."
"Ohhhh be careful of any eyeballs," Morgan mumbled and repeated. "Oh yes sir, you definitely know best. But really, I wonder, I never would of imagined something like this? Usually I expected nothing less than rubble but this place here seems... what's the word, holy?"
Blaine frowned, "Never been in a church myself. I wouldn't know ho-" He suddenly paused. "Did... you see that?" He asked. As soon as his voice reverberated the water sloshed about again, rippling a bit.
"Yes... I did," Morgan replied. "Was it just me or did everything also got more... cold?"
At those words the water suddenly sprayed up as a mist suddenly formed from the spot. Slowly it dissipated to reveal two Dratinis perking up from the water.
"Dra!" One cried out with a bit of obvious anger in its tone.
"... You don't know pokemon speech by chance, do you?" Blaine asked Morgan, "They look pissed."
Morgan slowly turned to Blaine in disgust. "What do you think," she can only ask. "At any rate, a wild Dratini is too good to pass up! So, you know what?" She then got out a pokeball from her bag. "I'm going to catch one! Now let's go, Combusken!"
She threw her pokeball in the air, as it was then opened, releasing energy, to reveal a medium-sized chick pokemon: a Combusken. "Kennn!" it cried, readying it's arms for a battle.
"Start off with Focus Energy!" Morgan ordered, as Combusken nodded in agreement, as it readied it's mind, preparing for the next strike. "This will help to enhance it's strength! Now, use your Scratch attack!" Combusken then ran up to the wild pokemon, preparing it's talons, however, the two Dratini prepared themselves for a double Twister attack from the two, as the combined power managed to push Combusken back. "Augh, I guess two of them at once might be a little much..." Morgan remarked as Combusken slowly recovered from it's stumble.
One Dratini cried out angrily as Derpy walked on out and puffed out his chest, "Croc!" He snarled in turn. He lowered his head, but then raised it up, a scary face flashing out at the two dragons. Both Dratinis hadn't expected it and screamed out in fright as they shrank back a bit.
"Now Morgan!" Blaine cried out, "While they're in shock!"
Morgan smiled and nodded. "Now Combusken! Give them the Double Kick!" she then ordered, as the newly recovered Combusken rushed u, then jumped, rushing in kicks towards both of the Dratinis at once, as Combusken regained it's superior position. "Now, use Ember!" she then called out. Combusken took a deep breath, then released a barrage of small flames, engaging contact towards the two small dragons, causing them to lay down in small pain.
"Good, I'm going to catch the right one," she mentioned, grabbing an empty pokeball. "Let's go get it!" she threw the pokeball towards the right-most Dratini, as the Dratini was sucked inside the pokeball, leaving the pokeball on the ground. It shook once. Then twice. Then a third time. "Come on..." Morgan mumbled to herself, as the pokeball continued to shake.
As soon as she knew it though, the pokeball gave her lucky 'PING!', signalling the capture. "Ah, excellent!" she said in joy, rashing to grab the pokeball. "A cuddly Dratini is nooow mine!"
"Ken!" Combusken cried in joy.
Derpy gurgled out with laughter at the two fearful dragons, but a water gun quickly drenched him in response. He shook his head dry and glared at the remaining dragon, gurgling angrily as he stomped up and down. "Aqua jet!" Blaine shouted out next.
The Croconaw gurgled and leapt up as he slammed into the dragon with his water covered body. The Dratini narrowed its eyes and cried out, its tail instead slamming into Derpy and causing him to fall onto the ground. He managed to flip in mid air and landed on his feet as he growled again.
The Dratini waved its tail back and forth menacingly before it dived down at Derpy. "Ice fang!"
The Croconaw's jaws suddenly glowed white as ice covered them and he was quick to slam his fangs into the Dratini's skin. The water type cried out in pain, struggling to break free from Derpy's grip as the Croconaw whipped his head wildly back and forth. Finally he spat out the dragon as Blaine readied his pokeball and threw it right at the unconscious mon.
There were three wiggles before the ball laid still on the ground. Blained picked up and nodded, "Okay... well... at least that's over with." He said with a weak smile, "Uh... you see anything in this cave? Why would this be sealed up?"
"You know, you have a very funny habit on asking questions that I don't know," Morgan pointed out, followed up with a sigh. "Hm, I'll give it this much; perhaps this place wasn't as vapid as I thought it would be. Maybe its all part of some sort of ancient.. thingy?"
Morgan than wiped her new pokeball with a white cloth from her pocket. "At least the Dragon pokemon here find this to be habitable, huh?"
Blaine shrugged, "If this place was sealed up... how did the dragons get in? How have they been surviving?" He peered at the water as suddenly the whole cave shook. "... Did you feel that?" Blaine asked.
"What, the sound of your own indifference? Because it's an awful sound," Morgan said with a chuckle. "Either that or... this place feels like it's.. collapsing?"
There was a stranger shake that caused Blaine to fall onto his knees and Derpy to fall over backwards. "Okay... this isn't-" Before he could finish the water exploded out from the lake, showering over Blaine and a large portion of the land. There, rising out of the water, was some sort of white... bird. Well, it looked like a bird at least. It had a pure white body with a blue belly, and right now it's eyes were directly looking at them.
"... Morgan... don't move." Blaine whispered, "Maybe if we don't move... then it can't see us."
Morgan didn't move an inch as she stared upon the mysterious creature. "W-What is that thing?" she whispered. "I-It's practically the size of one's ego..."
The creature turned its head to stare right at Morgan as she spoke. It let out a soft breath before it suddenly disappeared underneath the waters once more. Blaine fell over as he eyed the water, "W-What was that?"
"I have no idea," Morgan replied. "But what ever it was, I think it is protecting this place, or perhaps, this is its nest? Well, whatever the case, I... rather not stay to find out. Return, Combusken!" Morgan than returned her pokemon safely to its pokeball. "I rather not get eaten yet, thank you very much!"
Blaine nodded, "There could be more... let's get out of here." He muttered as he began to lead the way to the stairs once more.
"Don't you think we should've found an exit by now?" Melody asked, still following behind Vincent. The two had been walking for sometime now, and it seemed like they were not making any actual progress. In fact, Melody was starting to feel as if they were even starting to walk in circles. Some of the rocks and moss in the cave looked like ones they had passed earlier. Then again, it may have been the fact that after spending so long in Union Cave, everything was starting look the exact same. "Vinny, I'm starting to get the feeling that we're lost..."
"We're not lost!" Vincent grunted. "We are just...enjoying the sights and sounds is all!" Vincent refused to admit that he was a poor leader. He knew where he was. He was in a cave. And he was...lost. But he wouldn't admit that. However, he did need to find a way out. The cave was getting on his nerves for all the wrong reasons. It was frustrating and the constant stream of Zubats nibbling on him was not doing him any favors. It didn't help that while he was looking for a new Pokemon and/or any evidence about Team Rocket.
"Enjoying the sights and sounds...?" Melody asked. The girl huffed, crossing her arms over her chest. "Vinny, this place is dark, damp, and all musty... And the only sounds we keep hearing is an occasional screeching Zubat or dripping water. It's not anything to enjoy in terms of sight or sounds at all!"
Vincent's face twisted in frustration. "Look, I'm trying alright? If you don't like my job in leading, you can do it yourself."
"Well... I..." Melody hesitated. The girl looked down, mumbling under her breath. "I don't exactly know where we are at this point either, ya know..."
"Then don't complain! I'm trying!" Vincent said looking back at her, before continuing to walk. Yet, as he shifted back to leading, his head smacked into a rock. He fell back, and felt his forehead bruise and swell. "Ouch."
Melody bit her lip, watching Vincent rub his forehead. The girl actually had to fight back a giggle from Vincent's accident. The display was almost something ripped right from a cartoon. The girl made her way to Vincent's side though, taking a moment to make sure that he was alright.
"You okay, Vinny?" Melody asked, smiling weakly at the boy. "That looked like it's gonna leave a mark..."
Vincent removed his hands from his forehead, relieved he wasn't bleeding. "Well, it isn't like I was going to go into modeling with this face," he said under his breath. As he dusted himself off, literally and figuratively, he stood up straight and walked forward. However this time, he felt his knee bash into another rock, leaping up in pain, holding his knee tenderly.
"What in the world are you doing?" Melody asked. "I mean, I know it's dark in here, but I didn't the terrain or anything like that was that dangerous..."
"I am not that clumsy! I swear! I...I'm used to running around in rough terrain!" Vincent yelled back. "It's something...else..." His voice trailed off as he stared forward. Before him was a floating rock, blue in tone with a beading red eye. "Melody...what the hell is that?"
The girl gave the rock a strange look. She had honestly never seen anything quite like it before. Reaching into her backpack, Melody pulled out her Pokédex and gave the floating, eyeballed rock a quick scan.
"Beldum, the Iron Ball Pokémon. Beldum floats by emitting magnetic waves from its body to repel the Earth's magnetic field. They launch their claws into cliffs where they sleep."
"Well, it's definitely a Pokémon... But I've never seen anything like it," Melody responded, after scanning the rock. "That eyeball is kinda creepy..."
"Uh, huh," Vincent said. "I have a feeling that he was bumping into me, not me bumping into it," he continued as the Beldum leered at Vincent only mere centimeters from his face.
"I guess that's possible," Melody replied. Her eyes lit up as an idea formed in her head. "Maybe he couldn't see you too good. You know like, maybe something got in his eye and he's been floating around trying to get it out. But the problem is he doesn't really have any arms or hands to do that with, so he's been trying to find someone else to maybe help get him out, but since he's got something in his eye in the first place it's totally hard for him to do so!"
Vincent just gawked at his traveling companion. "You have the most overactive imagination I have ever seen..."
He looked back at the Beldum and peered into his eyes. "Looks like he's got some dust or chunks of rock in his eyes, I guess." Vincent reached into his pocket and summoned Hanzo. "Hey, uh, Hanzo. Give this guy...uh...um a bath or something. Wash out his eye mostly." Hanzo, being in sync with his master at all times with a comparable intense personality, raised an eyebrow as best he could. "Yeah, I know. But do it," Vincent insisted. Hanzo sighed and spewed water gently at the Steel type and Beldum was caught off guard but it seemed to enjoy it for the brief moments.
As the bath ended, Vincent looked at the Beldum. "We good?" The Beldum chirped as best he could and bobbed up and down in the air.
"Aw, that was really nice of you, Vinny," Melody exclaimed, smiling brightly at the boy. "And Beldum looks so happy that you helped him too!" Melody looked at the Beldum floating in front of Vincent, when an idea suddenly came to mind. "Hey, Vinny! Maybe this little guy can help us find the exit to this place!"
"Yeah, yeah. Don't remind me," Vincent dismissed Melody's beaming happiness. However, she did have a good idea. "Hey, Beldum. Do you happen to know of way out of this cave? Like some secret path that can get out of us here?" The Beldum circled the two trainers before flying away. It flew a couple of meters forward, but then looked back at them. "Well, looks like it will lead us somewhere. Wanna go for it?"
"Of course, it's better than wandering around aimlessly," Melody replied. She walked past Vincent, smiling at Beldum before petting the little Steel-type on his head. "Lead on, Beldum!"
The Beldum spun around and started flying down the caves, at a brisk pace forcing both Melody and Vincent to pick up their own pace. It slowed down, as if by instinct, during darker or more dangerous segments. However, this could be easily because it was aware that the two humans could not float above the ground like it was capable of. The Beldum was thoughtful if nothing else. After a couple of sharp turns and a walk down a narrow path that Vincent did not recognize from earlier, the Beldum abruptly stopped at what appeared to be a steep wall that towered before the two trainers.
"It led us to a dead end," Vincent said. "So much for wandering aimlessly. We went from lost to really lost."
Melody scratched the back of her head, looking around for a moment before sighing. "Maybe Beldum took us to his home instead... I mean, we just let him lead without really directly telling him where to go." The girl began to walk around, taking a look around the duo's surroundings. She reached out, gently patting the floating Psychic-type on his head. Despite what she had said a moment ago, the girl found it hard to believe that he had just brought them to a dead-end for no reason. "Did you want us to see something over here? Maybe you're lost too, right?"
"Aww this is pointless," Vincent yelled, flailing around before leaning on the wall. As he settled on it, suddenly the wall gave in and he fell back in a pile of stones. "Really...?" He groaned. "I have the worst luck today."
"Are you okay, Vinny?" Melody asked, doing her best to stifle another giggle at the boy's rather rotten luck. "You seem to be kinda accident prone today, you know?"
Looking up, Melody's eyes widened at the wall that Vincent had been leaning against just a moment ago. He had somehow managed to knockout a rather large hole from the wall by leaning against it. In fact, the hole resembled more of an arched doorway than it did some sort of hole in the wall. The brown-haired girl carefully stepped past Vincent and Beldum, a small whistle escaping her lips as she stuck her head inside the hole.
"You know what, Vinny?" Melody called back. "I think you found some sort of secret passage or something. You know, like in those old adventure and fantasy storybooks from a library or one of those treasure hunt movies.... With um... Oh, yeah! Carolina Mones!"
Vincent stood up with a creak of his back: "Well, lead on then. Let's just hope we don't bump into an Arbok or something on the way then." Vincent proceeded to dust himself off, motioning for Melody. "After you, Carolina."
Leading the way further into the new passage, Melody began to feel even more uncomfortable than before. It was dark, darker than the main area of Union Cave outside, and very narrow to boot. The two trainers had to walk single-file in order for them to progress down the passage. Eventually, the passage began to widen as the duo and Beldum made their way down it, eventually coming out to a rather large alcove of sorts.
"Well... so much for this getting us to an exit," Melody sighed, taking a look around the alcove.
There really was not much to it. In fact, the only noticeable landmark of this section of the cave came in the form of a rather large, underground lake that stretched out before them. Melody had always pictured that if she ever came across a body of water in a cave such as this one, that it would most likely be dirty from the cave debris and possible Pokémon droppings from creatures such as Zubat that might make it in. However, this one was... different. The water was clear, almost as if this section of cave had been shut off from both human and Pokémon alike for centuries.
"Well, if anything I guess we found a spot to get a drink, yeah?" Melody asked, glancing over her shoulder at Vincent with a small grin.
"The water seems too clean," Vincent said, looking into the water. "It's clear, like pristine." Vincent looked around the cave, looking at the stones and water. It was immaculate, having been free of the corrupting hand of the outside world. "I'm scared to touch it to be honest," he admitted. "I have a feeling we should get out of here and find the real exit."
"You worry way too much, Vinny. There's nothing here, just us and the water. Plus, I doubt Beldum would've led us here if he had know something dangerous was here," Melody replied. She took a moment, pulling her backpack off her shoulders and began rustling about for a sports bottle. "Besides, all this walking around is making me thirsty... So let's just take a break here for a bit!"
Vincent sighed, before sinking into a seat on the rocks by the water. The Beldum floated around him, doing his best chirping impression. "Fine," he finally said, tapping the Beldum on it's...head. "But not for too long. I don't get mixed up into something if I don't need to. I've done enough of that back home."
Melody glanced over her shoulder at Vincent's last comment. "Huh...? What do you mean, Vinny?"
"Nothing, nothing," Vincent said with a sigh. "Just...yeah, nothing. Fill up your bottle and let's go, alright?"
"Alright then..." Melody replied, beginning to rummage through her bag once more.
A frown graced her features as she searched for her sports bottle. The girl was sure that she had packed it, but for some reason she was not having any luck finding the thing. Melody began to quickly empty out the contents of her backpack, placing a few books, some spare clothes, and the like down on the ground. A quick smile quickly flashed across her lips as she finally managed to locate the item in question.
"Aha! Found ya!" Melody exclaimed, tugging the bottle out of backpack quickly. As she pulled the bottle out, the crystal shard she had found along with Christina and Blaine happened to fall out of her backpack, hitting the ground with a small tinging sound. Taking her bottle, Melody turned to face the underground lake, smiling as she began to fill her bottle. All the while, the crystal shard laying on the ground began to glow faintly, but the trainer seemed to be absolutely oblivious to this fact. "Nice, cool water... comin' right up!"
Vincent, on the other hand, noticed the shard glow and raised an eyebrow. "Um, Melody...why is that rock glowing?" Vincent said, pointing at the crystal shard.
"Huh...?" Melody replied, her eyes glanced down in the direction Vincent pointed, quickly taking notice of the glowing shard.
"Does it normally do that? It is yours, right?" Vincent continued to press the questions.
"N-No... I mean, it's mine, but I've never seen it do this before! It's just sort of sat there and been all... crystally, ya know?" Melody replied quickly, surprise evident on her face.
As if part of some production, the ground around the duo began to shake and whirlpool began to form in the water before them. Melody quickly turned her attention to the water as it grew more restless with every passing second. The brown-haired girl moved closer to the water's edge, her eyes widening further as a large, wing-spread shadow began to appear from beneath the depths of the crystal-clear water. A loud screeching sound filled the air as the water parted ways just enough to reveal a large, white and blue, bird-like creature had been resting beneath the calm and serene waters.
"Holy crap... W-What the hell is that?!" Melody asked, slowly backing away from the water's edge. She did not blink a single moment, afraid to take her eyes off the creature should it decide to have her or Vincent for a snack. "How did that hide... in that?!"
Vincent retained his composure a bit better. "Clearly the water is a whole lot deeper than we thought," he said with a gulp. He looked around, trying not to look directly at it for fear of eye contact. Also, a nearby exit in case they needed to make a run for it. "But what did I tell you, Melody? I knew this was a baaad idea." He couldn't help but remind her, in his dying moments. He wanted to be right at least one more time. "Now, it's best we remain calm and hope it doesn't see us."
"This isn't some movie, Vinny! I'm pretty sure its vision ain't based on sound," Melody remarked. "He clearly sees both of us!"
"Maybe it will confuse us for rocks!" He spouted back.
"...Rocks? Come on, Vinny. Even I'm not that bad."
"I DON'T SEE YOU COMING UP WITH ANY BETTER IDEAS!" Vincent roared, taking his attention away from the sea monster. As Vincent yelled at the top of his lungs, the creature crept close to them as if it was inspecting who they were. Vincent froze in fear, possibly for the first time in some time, given Vincent's stiff body and blank stare. The creature didn't do a thing but suddenly flew away with a huge gust of its "wings." Vincent nearly lost his footing but held his ground, covering his eyes due to the sharp wind. After he regained his awareness, the creature was gone with little evidence to make any sense of the situation.
Melody remained silent for quite some time after the creature vanished. The trainer was not quite sure just what to say after everything that she and Vincent had witnessed. It felt like hours passed by before Melody slowly turned to look at traveling companion, words to process the situation failing to come to her lips.
"I think... we need to find the exit... And just get out of here, yeah?" Melody finally suggested.
Christina & Aberdeen
chapter 6, additional antics
The two younger trainers waved goodbye to Aberdeen and Christina as they headed down the well-lit cave tunnel, back the way the trainers had first come. Christina and Aberdeen both waved back to them, the redhead letting out a little breath of relief as they went around a corner and out of sight.
"Phew... thought they'd never leave. At least the walk back through the tunnels more or less dried us off, huh Deen?" She asked with a smile, lowering her hand from waving to pat down her mostly dried clothes. "... Although maybe I should look into getting some new clothes..."
"Yeah, pity we don't have Sindy to dry us now."
Aberdeen nearly jumped himself as soon as the words left his mouth and he gave Christina a guilty look, regretting that he reminded her of their loss. "I'm sorry," he said hastily. "We'll find her. The people at the pokémon center said there were shady figures heading through Union Cave in the night, yeah? And we know there were people around our tent when they disappeared," he mumbled, nodding to himself as he reiterated what conclusions they had drawn earlier that day. "So we'll find them here somewhere. Or organize a bigger search and contact Pine once we get to the next town. I promise!"
"..." Christina had gone quiet at the mention of Sindy, lips pressed ever so slightly together as they continued to wander through the caves, but a moment later, she looked up to Aberdeen with a bright smile, which he wasn't entirely sure whether it was genuine, or just her trying to stay brave.
"Yeah, I'm sure we will! Besides, Sindy can take care of herself. You don't have to worry so much." She said, grinning a little as she lifted her hand to give Aberdeen a light, friendly nudge on his shoulder.
Behind the two trainers, the Flaaffy and Haunter were just trotting along calmly. The trainers had decided to keep them out incase something happened and they had to react fast. The Haunter was watching the two trainers, and as Christina lightly shoved Aberdeen, Haunter glanced to Terribolt, a grin spreading on his mouth as he raised a hand to give the sheep a slightly-too-powerful shove on the shoulder.
The Flaaffy, however, saw the movement in the corner of her eye and charged her body up with electricity right in time for the ghosts's contact. The result was a light shock back at Haunter, at which Terribolt snickered maliciously.
The Haunter's... pointy hair(?) stood on ends as the electricity surged through him, causing him to blink in surprise a few times before narrowing his eyes at Terribolt with a malicious smile on his lips, and you could almost hear him going "... Well played...".
Terribolt, however, was only annoyed when she didn't succeed in making Haunter mad, and pouted even harder. Now, Aberdeen started to notice it.
"Hey guys, you're not still playing enemies, are you?" he asked, trying to keep the tone light.
Christina glanced over her shoulder as well, smiling a little as she shrugged her shoulders. "Well, you know how it is, Deen, some things just don't change. Maybe they've been like this for a long time."
"Huh, I didn't think of that. They could have been living on that route and been rivals for ages before we came along and forced them to behave. How cruel of us!" Ab joked and laughed as he patted Terribolt's head affectionally.
She didn't mind, thankfully, and decided to just ignore Haunter and not give Ab any clues about what their past had actually been like. It could be one of those loose ends you never really find out about in a story. Yeah.
Only a few minutes of walking later, the small group walked from the relatively small tunnel they were in, into a somewhat larger cave, almost like the one they'd been in earlier. However, this cave was a tiny bit smaller and had lanterns hanging across the walls, from the ceiling, and on poles scattered throughout it.
The most peculiar thing about this part of the cave, was that there was a small hut made out of wood, with a food stand-like extension of it. Several benches were scattered around the front of it, and to the side stood a stone well. On a couple of the benches and around the area, a few trainers, young and old, were either chatting, eating, or simply preparing to continue on their trip through the caverns.
Christina raised her brows in surprise at the sight of this almost picnic-like area, glancing to Aberdeen with a 'I did -not- expect this' expression on her face.
Aberdeen just smiled though. "Perfect! I was running out of water," he said. "I mean, falling into a river doesn't automatically make you not thirsty."
He gave Tina a pat on her back and headed up to the well with a tap that was situated on the wall of the hut. After filling his water bottle up, he noticed that Terribolt seemed thirsty too.
"Ah, why not let everybody stretch their limbs outside of the pokéballs for a while. Or what do you say, Tina?" he said, poking one of the pokéballs at his belt to emphasize his point.
"Hey, that's a pretty good idea, actually. We can grab a bite to eat as well." She smiled and nodded her head as she tucked away her own water bottle, which she'd just filled.
Taking a hold of the ball containing Conan, she clicked the button, releasing the small dragon. He immediately eyed the Haunter whom he'd fought earlier that day, puffing out his chest and growling, as if to prove who won the fight. The Haunter, however, simply waved at the dragon with a grin before floating over to the well, peering down the shaft.
Aberdeen let out all of his pokémon... except one. Pangea flapped her wings a bit but stayed on the ground near Aberdeen with a content look on her face. Hero remained sheathed but gave wary eyes at both Terribolt and Christina's Haunter. Chocolate bounced out happily but his smile fell a bit when he remembered that Winter was not around. Luckily, one of the newly caught Psyducks were on Ab's team now and was interesting enough for Chocolate to forget the sorrow for a moment. He wobbled over to the yellow water pokémon and tried to strike up a conversation. Aberdeen couldn't help but giggle when he saw that it was not too easy - apparently the Psyduck didn't seem to be the most intelligent of beings.
Unown U stayed in its pokéball though. After what happened with Tina earlier... Aberdeen felt uneasy in its presence. He still had not straightened out the chain of events in his mind, nor told Christina what he had seen. What he surely must have imagined, out of fear.
Getting caught up in his thoughts again, Ab didn't notice when Hero floated over to Haunter by the well. She seemed to sense the same eerieness about him as she possessed herself. They were both somehow ghosts.
The Haunter turned to face Hero, a look of surprise on his face, probably at seeing another one of his type. He crossed his... hands, over his... chest? And tilted his head a little to the side in a very animated fashion. Whether the two was communicating or not was a bit difficult to determine, considering ghosts could probably communicate mentally or spiritually, somehow.
Christina nudged Aberdeen with her elbow, smiling as she nodded towards the Haunter and Hero.
"Looks like Hero and Shade are getting along pretty well, huh? So far, she's kind of kept to herself, hasn't she?"
"Yeah, she sure hasn't been the cheeriest one," Ab agreed, following her gaze.
Meanwhile, Conan had noticed the rest of Aberdeen's Pokémon having been released, narrowing his eyes as he looked over at Chocolate and one of the Psyducks 'chatting'. He huffed and quickly stepped closer, letting out a challenging little huff while staring up at the somewhat taller Chocolate, seemingly challenging him to a competition of some kind.
Chocolate eyed the dragon from its toes to its armored head, and smiled. Sure, the Quilladin was rather young, but in his eyes this Bagon was but a baby. Of course he would play! He forgot about the confusing Psyduck for a while and turned to face Conan, demonstratively steeling himself as if challenging the dragon to give him its best tackle.
Satisfied that Chocolate took his challenge, Conan took a step or two back, narrowing his eyes on the Quilladin. He scraped his foot along the ground, nostrils flaring as he prepared himself for the charge. Letting out a growl, he suddenly charged forwards, his head lowering to his side just before reaching Chocolate, swinging his head to the left in order to slam into him with even more force.
Chocolate took the hit without falling over, but Conan pushed him several feet back in the dirt. The Quilladin admitted that he was surprised - the baby packed a punch!
Christina sighed happily as she stretched out her legs, having taken a seat on one of the benches. She glanced over at the Pokémon, smiling as she saw them all mingling, before glancing back to Aberdeen. "It's nice to finally have a break from everything, huh Deen? The Pokémon definitely seem to be enjoying the spare time."
Aberdeen liked when things were happening and normally he wanted to be up and on the go at every possibility. But today he concurred; they really needed a bit of a break from trouble. But before he could reply, someone else spoke up.
"Those are mighty fancy pokémon you got there."
Ab turned around to see a tall, skinny teenager with his hair in a ponytail and a baseball cap on his head. He wore a smile that didn't quite reach his eyes. Beside him and slightly behind was a girl that looked about the same age as the boy, with long, deep-black hair, the ends of which curled slightly, a bored expression on her face.
"They sure are!" Ab replied to the newcomer instead. It must have been one of the trainers that had already been there when they arrived at the hut. "What's it to ya?"
"Well, you see. My friend and I, we were looking for some punks to beat up."
That made Aberdeen raise his eyebrows and glance over at Tina. This was not exactly the start of how he would imagine a 'break from trouble'.
"-Excuse- me?" Christina said, her eyes fixed on the boy as she stood up, crossing her arms over her chest in a very standoff-ish pose.
"You heard him," the girl said in a strangely slow voice. "Battle. Two on two, two pokémon each. No cure rules."
"Yeah!" the guy in the cap agreed. "No cure rules!"
"That's... the regular rules," Aberdeen commented.
"Yeah!" the guy in the cap repeated, unphased.
"You're on!" Christina countered, looking absolutely furious at this point, whipping an arm out to point at the two of them. Her head then whipped around to glare at Aberdeen. "Come on Deen, let's wipe the smug expression off their faces!"
"Uh, what happened to us taking a break?" he asked, but mostly rhetorically. "But sure! I think I want to test this new fellow out anyways," he continued with a wink in Psyduck's direction. The duck finally seemed to react to outside stimuli and the reaction was a nervous one.
Chocolate jumped away from Conan and squeaked excitedly to show that he was ready for battle. But Aberdeen pet him gently on the head with a smile and called for Hero by the well instead. Chocolate would have shrugged if he had had shoulders to do it with. Pangea didn't seem upset over not getting to battle either - she merely took flight for a second in order to land and cozy up atop Chocolate's head to get a good view of what was to come. Terribolt, however, decided to sulk for a bit. She would have wanted to show off her strength to her trainer a bit more and didn't at all enjoy the thought of the new dork in the gang and the angry ghost brute getting the chance instead. Especially since Hero didn't really seem to want the chance in the first place.
"What pokémon will you use, Tina?" Aberdeen asked her as their opponents backed up along the road to put some space between the teams.
"Oh, uh..." She began, glancing back at the leftover Pokémon. After a brief look, she seemed to have made a decision, nodding her head. "I've only got two Pokémon with me right now anyway, so I'll start off with Shade." She motioned for the Haunter to come closer, who promptly pirouetted through the air, levitating down to hover in front of Christina, grinning maliciously at the two new trainers. Conan seemed just as upset as Terribolt about not fighting first, letting out an angry growl as he decided to spend some energy stomping around on the spot. Chocolate put a calming hand on his head as if to shush him, which seemed to mostly calm the little dragon, who let out a little snort instead.
The sound of two pokéballs opening up turned their attention to Ab's and Christina's opponents. A Furret and a Ledian stood in front of their trainers on the road.
"This is going to be messy... Four pokémon in a battle at once?" Aberdeen said, but smiled. "Fun! Hero, you ready?"
The Honedge flied up to her trainer and unsheated her blade with a menacing swing.
"First time for everything, right?" Christina asked, glancing at Aberdeen with a little grin before turning her attention back to the opposing trainers and their Pokémon, wrinkling her nose at the sight of the Ledian. "Alright Shade, let's start this off! Use Mean Look on the big bug!"
The Haunter closed his eyes, lowering his head a little before suddenly snapping his gaze back open and up, his eyes wide, piercing and glowing ever so slightly, undoubtedly enhanced by his ghostly abilities, as he stared down the Ledian with a menacing, wild grin.
"And you start with Swords Dance!" Ab called out to Hero. She immediately started swirling around, whipping up a strange aura around her that would greatly strengthen her attack skills momentarily.
"Hey, hang on!" the guy with the long hair and cap shouted. "Okay then, Ledian. Comet Punch!"
The bug, not heavily deterred by Haunter's stare, flew swiftly through the air to close the distance between the two in mere seconds. It started throwing a flurry of punches at the ghost... But it was not long until it stopped and looked quite embarrassed. To top it all off, Shade looked incredibly bored, lifting one of his hands to yawn deeply into it, giving the Ledian a small smirk as if saying 'Was that it?'.
"What, keep going!" the trainer called out.
Aberdeen couldn't help but chuckling. They weren't dealing with the smartest of opponents. "Normal attacks don't work on Ghost types. But Ghost attacks also don't work on Normal types," he added towards Christina before turning back to see what his own opponent for now would do in response to Hero's dancing.
"Don't lose sight of your opponent. Furret, Thunderbolt." The girl said in her oddly slow, almost quiet voice. The Furret stood up on its hind legs, an oddly determined look on its face as lightning started crackling along its body. It slammed its front feet onto the ground again, tail raising up as a massive blast of electricity was sent directly towards Hero.
Meanwhile, Christina smiled as the Ledian's attack was ineffective against Shade. She was so looking forward to wiping this kid's smug expression off his face. "Alright, we've got the upper hand now, Shade! Lick!"
Shade looked down at the Ledian with a menacing grin plastered on his face, the bug looking very unsure of its situation as the Haunter seemed to almost emit a super-creepy aura. That's when Shade stuck out his tounge and slapped it against the Ledian's face.
The bug froze for a moment as the wet appendage slid against his cheek. Then it positively freaked out and shot up into the air, struggling to get the wetness off. Luckily, it didn't seem to have become paralyzed. Rather spurred on.
"Safeguard put in place," the male trainer laughed. "No status problems here! Now, use Reflect!"
Ledian shaped up and concentrated up in the air. The air around it seemed to vibrate for a moment - Reflect's armor had been activated to suppress physical moves.
"Now, Supersonic!" the trainer called out, breaking a fundamental battling rule by not letting Tina call the next move before him...
The Thunderbolt was completely unexpected for both Ab and Hero. The sword was struck and fell to the ground.
"No!" Ab called out and rushed ahead into the battle. It was a risky move - if more Thunderbolts came their way, he would be fried. But in No Cure rules, it was still allowed to try and reach your pokémon if you could. "Hang in there!" he mumbled as he reached down into his bag for a Potion as fast as he could. He didn't want to lose that quickly just because they weren't prepared for what skills their opponent possessed.
"... Foolish." The girl commented, glancing at the Furred, gesturing to the downed Pokémon and her trainer. "Use Dig."
The Furret squeaked, leapt into the air where it spun around and dove into the ground head-first, quickly burrowing underground.
Aberdeen heard the order but was focused on healing Hero as quickly as he could. The potion did wonders in a split second and Hero soared up into the air again. Only then did the command "Dig" really register in Ab's brain. He jumped up from his spot just in time to not get completely headbutted from beneath, only knocked aside by the force from the ground. Hero was struck too, but she had floated up far enough into the air for Furret's speed to have diminished a bit when the attack finally made contact. Mostly, it bumped the sword and made her swirl around and lose control of her levitation. Aberdeen let out a breath of relief and crept away from the action.
"Wh- you can't do that!" Christina burst out as the boy ordered the Ledian to use Supersonic. The odd vibrations the Ledian created through the air, seemed to confuse Shade, getting a disoriented look on his face. Gritting her teeth, Christina was just about to shout out an order as she looked over at Aberdeen, almost being knocked to the ground by the Furret diving through the air after shooting out of the earth.
"... Shade, use Hypnosis on the Furret!"
The Haunter seemed completely out of it for a few moments before finally snapping back to reality, turning towards the Furret preparing to dig again. He made eye contact, a ghostly cackle escaping him as his eyes began shining a deep purple in an odd, swirling pattern.
The Furret froze in place, staring deeply into the Haunter's eyes before toppling over backwards, fast asleep. Christina hurried over to Aberdeen, offering him a hand to help him up with a confident smile on her face. "Come on, Deen, let's show these twats what we're made of."
Ab let her help him up but kept his focus on the battle. "Hit Furret with Fury Cutter!" he commanded Hero, who didn't hesitate in her rising fury.
She swung her blade at the Furret to deliver a quick cut. It's sleeping form didn't react, so Hero kept going, each cut rising in intensity and damage.
Meanwhile, the Ledian and its trainer were quite a bit disappointed in their efforts so far; the Supersonic didn't seem to have affected Shade much.
"Aerial Ace!" the dude with the cap shouted.
Ledian took aim and seemed to kick off through the air at the same time as its body started glowing with a white energy. Shade had no possible means of evasion.
"Crap! Shade, try to avoid the attack!" Christina called out, biting her lower lip in worry. Shade didn't have any attacks he could use to try and avoid the attack.
The Haunter's grin faded as he saw the Ledian charging its attack. Looking around himself in a somewhat theatrical panic, he quickly noticed Hero, who was still swinging away at the poor, sleeping Furret. A bright grin formed on his lips.
The Ledian shot towards him, one arm outstretched as it slammed into and past the ghost, sending Shade spinning off to the side. Before hitting the ground, however, he managed to pull himself back up, clearly hurt from the attack.
The Ledian, however, was apparently charging up for another attack, the boy grinning while watching his bug preparing the finishing blow. Christina glared, stomping her foot on the ground. "Damnit, stop cheating, you little twerp!"
Shade, however, was putting his own plan into motion. He hurried over to Hero, and without hesitating for a second, he grabbed her by the hilt while she was in mid-swing, using the momentum to spin her around to his front. He had timed it just so that as the Ledian shot towards him, Hero's continued Fury Cutter slammed right into him, sending him flying diagonally down into the ground, completely knocked out.
Christina blinked in surprise as both Furret and now also the Ledian were laying on the ground, unmoving. "... Wow, erh... okay, that's... definitely a way to do it. Nice job, you two!"
Shade had let go of Hero as soon as the attack was over, giving her an awkward, apologetic smile while rubbing the back of his head. She gave him the most furious glare she possibly could with the eye she turned towards him, not quite having grasped what had just happened yet. But her other eye saw both opponents lay knocked out and that must mean something good, at least. She decided to not hack the other ghe other ghost into pieces. For now.
"Wow, what a move!" Aberdeen laughed. "Ghost power!"
Only after he said it, arms outstretched in a victory pose, did he realize what he had just said. Ghost... Some color faded from his face.
Noticing Aberdeen's sudden meekness, Christina glanced over at him, a worried look coming over her for a moment before taking a deep breath, turning to face forwards again. "... Alright! We took down your first two Pokémon! Let's see how well you do against my ace in the sleeve. Come on back, Shade! You did well!"
She glanced over at Aberdeen again, sending him a smile to try and snap him out of it. "Who're you going to send out next, Deen? Chocolate?"
"Um, no," Ab said, recollecting himself. "Time for Psyduck to show what he's made of!"
The duck, who had been standing far behind the battle with a vacant look, now almost jumped at the mention of himself. He blinked a few times before waddling up to Ab, glancing up at him as if asking what he was supposed to do.
"You'll be fine," Ab ensured the fellow with a pat on the head. "Just see it as a game! We're playing!"
Hero swooshed past them with rolling eyes, away from the battlefield. She didn't really think this dork of a pokémon was able to 'play'. But their trainer was so trusting. He was sure lucky she had decided to come with him.
Following Hero was Shade, looking pretty happy with how he handled the fight, but also seemingly muttering something quietly to Hero, seemingly trying to give her the credit for beating both of the opponents in order to make her less grumpy towards him. He only got another glare in return, but still no death by ghostblade, so that was well at least.
Christina couldn't help but snicker as the Psyduck waddled up next to Aberdeen. She liked the look of Psyducks. They were pretty dorky and adorable. She smiled to herself. They were pretty adorkable.
"Alright Conan, you're up!" She called back to the little dragon having taken a seat besides Chocolate. But now that his name was called, he jumped to his feet, letting out what was supposedly a roar to him, but sounded more like a mix between a cat and a dog growling and purring. He proceeded to charge past the two ghosts, coming to a stop in front of Christina, growling and scraping his feet along the ground.
The girl on the opposite side of Aberdeen rolled her eyes and let out a sigh. "... This is so stupid. I knew I shouldn't have let you pick our opponents, Derrick."
"Don't worry, don't worry, Jenna," Derrick said with a wave before picking up another pokéball and sending his new champ out. It turned out to be a Venonat.
"Hrmph," the girl replied, releasing her next Pokémon as well, which turned out to be a yellow and black-spotted, four-legged Pokémon, which seemed to have another face on its tail.
"What the heck...?" Christina muttered at the sight of the Pokémon now preparing itself for battle. She flicked out her Pokédex and scanned the Pokémon, raising her brows. "Girafarig, huh? And it's... Psychic-type. Hmh."
"And that's a Venonat!" Aberdeen said with a grin. "Easy! Okay, which opponent do you want to start with?"
But they didn't let Deen and Tina choose. Before the red haired girl could reply, the Girafarig and Venonat both charged forward towards Psyduck and Conan respectively.
Girafarig's tough body easily hit the surprised Psyduck hard, making it tumble over backwards with a weak 'psy?'.
"Retaliate, boy!" Ab shouted encouragingly. "Water Gun!"
But Psyduck slowly got up to its feet, blinked a few times... and then used another move. Judging from the cascades of water foaming up from beneath of him, drenching the battlefield in muddy water, it seemed to be the move Water Sport.
"What?" Ab exclaimed. "I guess he heard wrong..."
Christina cringed at the Venonat tackled right into Conan, sending the small dragon stumbling backwards, growling in anger. Why do I always have to fight the bugs...?
"It's okay Conan, get revenge on that stinking bug! Use Rage!"
Conan let out an angry growl, locking eyes with the Venonat, scraping his foot on the ground before charging forwards, swinging his head upwards and slamming it squarely against the Venonat, knocking the insect backwards. "Nice one!"
"Looks like you can't control your Psyduck, little boy." The other girl commented, the first sign of emotion coming in the form of a small smirk as she nodded to her Girafarig. "Go, use Confusion."
The Girafarig turned around, letting the weirdly-shaped tail face Psyduck. It grinned, staring at the yellow duck before a faint wave of something purple erupted from it, aimed straight at Psyduck.
The eyes of Aberdeen's pokémon widened and it started wailing strangely.
"What are you doing?" Ab asked in annoyance. "Use Water Gun this time!"
Psyduck shut its beak and shook its head, arms stretched up to hold the sides of it as if he was hurting. Then he closed his eyes and fired a Water Gun... Right into the back of Conan's head, sending the little dragon toppling forwards. As the dragon fell over, the Water Gun beam continued on and splashed the eyes of the unsuspecting Venonat, effectively knocking it out at last.
Conan, however, was not happy with this development. The dragon got up and turned around, glaring and baring his teeth at the Psyduck. With a little snarl, he charged at the duck, swung his head and knocked it down squarely on top of Psyduck's head. It wasn't a full-fledged attack, but seemed more like a sort of punishment for attacking him.
"HEY!" Aberdeen shouted, as Derrick started laughing despite his pokémon just having lost. "Tina, what's your pokémon doing?"
"I... I don't know! I think he's... really angry that Psyduck hit him instead of the Girafarig?"
However, after the first initial knock, Conan started growling and whacking Psyduck on the head, supposedly telling him off in Pokémon language. Christina and Aberdeen could do nothing but stare on in amazement at what was happening, and Girafarig seemed unsure of what action to take.
Psyduck didn't fight back, he just stood there, eyes closed, and let Conan's growls and whacking shower over him. Until, suddenly, Conan was stopped midair. Psyduck's eyes had opened, and they were glowing so brightly that the pupils weren't even visible.
Girafarig's scream made the trainers turn around. It was being lifted off its feet, into the air, by a mysterious force. It wasn't hard to put two and two together and realize that this was Psyduck's doing.
"Okay... It's not Water Gun, but we'll make it work!" Aberdeen said with a shrug. "Tina, let's finish this!"
Christina blinked, turning away from... whatever the hell was going on in front of them, to look at Aberdeen. She nodded and gave him a smile before looking forward again as Conan staggered back, letting out an angry huff at Psyduck stopping him, but deciding that he'd had enough anyway.
"Now, Conan! Use Bite!"
The dragon turned his eyes onto the Girafarig flailing in the air, a glutteral, but still rather adorable growl escaping him. It was the perfect outlet for his frustration. Charging forwards, the dragon was surprisingly fast as he lept into the air, opening his maws mid-flight before chomping down on top of Girafarig's head, which was slightly too large for him to bite over, which left him dangling while the Girafarig continued to flail in confusion and pain.
It only took a few seconds before the psychic-type's eyes rolled back in its head, the sheer stress and pain from Psyduck and Conan's attacks simply being too much for it. With its foe defeated, Psyduck let the Girafarig fall to the ground, Conan finally letting go, letting out a little huff before raising his head proudly, turning and waddling back over to his trainer.
Ab laughed in triumph and high fived Christina before he ran up to Psyduck. The water type's eyes were just dimming and his arms didn't clutch his head anymore as he blinked up at his trainer.
"You did that when we found you too," Ab said. "When you fought off Jamie and Don. So you're psychic really, eh? But the pokédex doesn't pick up your psychic moves in the list..." He shook his head as he returned the once again hardly responsive Psyduck into its pokéball. "Psychic pokémon are starting to freak me out even more than ghosts," he mumbled.
Derrick groaned and put his cap down lower over his forehead. "Whatever," he said. "I guess you can have some prize money. Jenna?"
The girl, after calling back the Girafarig turned to her companion and gave him a raised brow. "You were the one who picked the targets. Your mistake." And with that, she simply turned around and moved over to one of the empty tables, sitting herself down again.
Derrick groaned even louder and tossed his cap on the ground. But Aberdeen looked over at Christina and blinked.
"I think we're starting to get good at this trainer thing," he said.
"I think you're right." Christina replied, sending him a soft smile after returning Conan.
chapter 7; AZALEA TOWN part I
Spoiler:
Union Cave opens up into a short, open route to the southwest. It's really just a short walk to get to the safety of a town at last.
Azalea Town is smaller than both Cherrgrove and Violet, and with a very different atmosphere. It doesn't really feel urban, even though there is both a high-end pokémon center, a research studio, a pokémon gym and several usual stores and shops like a regular town should have. It could be described as lush, quaint or some such word.
The pokémon center is like any other with healing and beds for trainers being provided. However, they mostly work with natural cures rather than synthetic medicine.
The research studio is said to be the main base of dwelling for two renowned people who aren't exactly researchers: the famous custom pokéball maker Mr Kurt and the gym leader called Bugsy. It is located on the northern side of town, but not too far from the gym at the town's heart, and doesn't look like much more than a big cabin with some chimneys... At least on the outside. On the inside, it looks like professor Pine's lab, almost.
Weather - SUNNY and FRESH
Events:
#1 Battle Bugsy at the gym. He will recognize your starter as one of professor Pine's former pokémon. That's enough for him to trust you, as he claims that Pine is a good friend of his, and ask that you help them infiltrate the base of a criminal gang called Team Rocket who have been blackmailing the town into keeping quiet about their affairs for too long now. Bugsy wants you to meet him behind the Pokémon Center at midnight. To help you get ready for what may come, he gives you a TM after your battle. You decide OOC which TM it is. You can't do this event if your shiny starter is currently kidnapped... unless you are Sir Bastian.
#2 Visit Kurt at the Research Studio and make sure that he glimpses your shiny starter. He will recognize it as one of professor Pine's former pokémon. That's enough for him to trust you, as he claims that Pine is a good friend of his, and ask that you help them infiltrate the base of a criminal gang called Team Rocket who have been blackmailing the town into keeping quiet about their affairs for too long now. Kurt wants you to meet him behind the Pokémon Center at midnight. To help you get ready for what may come, he gives you a TM after your battle. You decide OOC which TM it is. You can do this event even if your shiny starter is kidnapped, IF you accompany another player to Kurt, who still has theirs.
#3 Do none of #1 or #2. For example, if you're allergic to Kurt but don't have your starter. You might get a reward later on instead... (spoiler: yeah, you'll get a TM after chapter 8).
Chapter 8 will start with us meeting behind the pokémon center.
If you choose #1:
Azalea Gym:
Bugsy is known around town for being very friendly and cheerful and smarter than he looks. He is mistaken for a girl by challengers sometimes, but he doesn't exactly seem angry about that. Whatever. Many think he'll be an easy match since he uses bug types, but don't be fooled. He knows a lot more than he lets on.
His gym is like a greenhouse, filled with bug pokémon and youngsters who enjoy helping the leader take care of them.
"Finally!" Aberdeen exclaimed and stretched his hands towards the air when he and Christina walked out from Union Cave. "I thought it'd never end. I don't think I like caves much. Or ruins," he added thoughtfully.
"Yeah, caves aren't really my thing either, I've found..." Christina began, before grinning lightly. "But I love old ruins. The history behind it and imagining what it was like when it was new... I love that. And exploring them, of course."
It was getting dark - the journey through the cave had been longer than they had expected. Figures, when you run into old acquaintances and new challengers along the way.
"I think I can spot the lights from Azalea over there!" Ab said with a smile. "Ready to meet civilization again, Tina?"
Turning to Aberdeen, Christina sent him a warm smile and nodded. "More ready than I've ever been." She stretched her arms backwards for a moment before relaxing again with a sigh. "I need a bath, and I need to have a sit-down and put my feet up. Ooh, and a nice, big dinner. I can almost smell the spaghetti already!"
Spurred on by the thought of a good meal, Christina took the lead as she strode down the path towards the faintly illuminated town in the not-too-far distance.
"Oooh spaghetti!" Aberdeen mused as he followed her.
It was even darker once they finally reached the town, so they decided to head directly for the Pokémon Center and eat there. After dinner, they were both so tired and content, their pokémon as well, so they more or less wanted to head to bed immediately.
Aberdeen leaned on the counter to the Pokémon Center's reception with a foggy look.
"Hello, welcome to our Pokémon Center!" the happy nurse greeted him. "How may I assist you?"
"I need a room for the night, please."
"Trainer's license?"
"Uh... This will do, right?" Aberdeen said and pulled up his pokédex.
The nurse nodded with an even wider smile. Perhaps this was not the first pokédex she had seen today, which would mean that more of Pine's trainers had reached Azalea by now.
"One room for you and your friend to share?"
Aberdeen started to nod before he realized what she was asking and quickly turned around to face Christina with a questioning look. They had slept next to each other in a tiny tent, but sharing a room in civilization was different. Or was it?
Christina returned his glance, looking as if she shared the exact same doubts. However, it only took her a few seconds before she sent him a smile, turning back to the nurse.
"Yeah, we'll share a room, thanks." After receiving their key, Christina dangled it in her hand, turning back to Aberdeen. "More space for other trainers." With that, she nodded towards the stairs, walking towards it. "Besides, I doubt you'd mind sharing the bathroom, yeah?"
Aberdeen swallowed hard and hoped that it doesn't make as loud a noise for her as it did inside his own head.
"Of course not! Let's... Let's head to bed already."
As they headed upstairs to the dormitories, Christina went first and Aberdeen followed, thoughtfully. He watched her long, red hair sway behind her. They had been traveling together quite a lot now. Faced sorrow and triumph and scares and happiness. He found himself wondering if these days were over soon. And then he found himself wishing they were not. Wasn't this what he originally set out to do - experience and really feel before his life came to an end?
He watched Tina fumble with the lock at their door and then shoot him a bright smile as it finally gave away and let them in. As always, he smiled widely back.
Blaine and Morgan
Blaine silently walked along the path, a bit glad that they had managed to get out of the caves, but he still had to look behind him to make sure that large... thing wasn't following them. He had seen a Onix before in a picture, sure, but this was different in a way. Meeting such a large mon was just something he had never dreamed about. Derpy just tromped on next to him, not showing the least bit of worry as Blaine looked over at Morgan, "So, have any idea what that... thing was? I mean, we sort of ran out of there. I didn't even think about checking my dex."
"Oh sure, I'll casually just pull out my pokedex while that... thing had the potential to eat me," Morgan detested, dusting off some of the excess dirt from her dress. "Remind me to do that next time! Unfortunately, no, I haven't. It was way bigger than any pokemon I've seen before, indeed."
Blaine nodded, "Same here." He couldn't help but breath a sigh of relief as he saw the entrance to Azalea. He still glanced back and wiped his brow, "I guess we ran quite a ways." He murmured. "Still, we should get some rest now. It's what? Past midnight?" He asked.
"I didn't even notice," Morgan replied. "But I suppose we should, if we must. To a Pokemon Centre, right? I'm sure they have good care there."
He nodded and looked up at the sky, "So... that thing isn't going to come after us right?" He asked, "I mean we're in a town. It wouldn't come here..."
"Nah, probably there's a better chance of Mankeys going up your nose," Morgan added, "But I hope that's the last we'll see of that... beast. At any rate, I suppose I have to thank you for being my humble assisant today. It was.. interesting! To say the least, haha."
"Interesting... in that we didn't die." Blaine rubbed at his forehead, "Yeah sure, whatever. I just need some shut eye now." Derpy suddenly paused and walked up to Morgan, tapping her leg and holding out his hand expectendtly. "Oh right, payment." Blaine said, "I mean, you hired me on."
Morgan was surprised, but then smiled and let loose a brief giggle. "I suppose you've got me there," she said, as she then leaned down to pat the pokemon. She whispered, "I'll have something in the morning for you, friend. But only for you, okay? Don't tell your partner, okay?" she then winked and stood up. "I'll see you both tommorow, maybe. If you're good, I'll.. let you have some tea with me. You should feel honored! Toodles..." she then waved with her back hand as she strolled towards the inn.
Blaine stared on and sighed, "She didn't pay."
Derpy let out a soft gurgle as he shook his head and as she walked away he briefly held up a certain claw to her backside, but just for a quick second.
"... You're something else Derpy." Blaine said as he readjusted his pack and made his way to the pokemon center. "Just time for a good peaceful night."
Christina & Aberdeen & Morgan
chapter 7, Azalea Town
"New day, new town!" Aberdeen gleefully exclaimed as he exited the pokémon center into the morning sunshine in Azalea Town. It had been really nice to get a good night's sleep in a proper bed again, as opposed to how worried they had been in the cold rain on Route 32. Nevermind that he had been spending his night mere meters from a sleeping girl again. He was almost getting used to that by now.
As if on cue, Christina came to a stop besides Aberdeen, sighing happily as she stretched her arms over her head, bending a little left and right to stretch out, a bright smile on her lips as she planted her hands on her hips.
"I remember my brother telling me about Azaela. Going to be fun seeing it for myself, don't you think so, Deen?" She asked, sending the boy besides her a cheerful grin.
"I guess," Ab said, nodding. "It's not overly big from what I've heard... But bigger isn't always better! Isn't that right, Chocolate?"
As he spoke, he released his starter from its pokéball. The Quilladin materialized in front of them and yawned loudly before flexing his muscles for the trainers.
"Oh, right, you're not exactly tiny anymore... By the way, Christina, have you talked to your brother for a while?" Ab asked.
"Oh, uhm..." Christina began, lifting a hand to rub the back of her neck, glancing away from Chocolate and down the road into the town proper. "Well... every now and then, he calls me. He's almost never home though."
She shook her head, beaming a bright smile at Aberdeen. "Doesn't matter though, this isn't about him! This is about going on a journey and making new friends, yeah?"
"Of course!" Ab beamed back at her.
"AND ANOTHER THING," a shout screamed from inside the inn. Of course, it had to be coming from Morgan. "Just what was with the air conditioner?! It was even colder than a Lapras's belly! No! I think it was even warmer! AND ONE MORE THING. What was with the beds?! It was even rougher than an Onix! Not only has it destroyed my back, it has destroyed my good mood!"
The keep then bowed her sincerest apologizes, as.. there hasn't been much complaints before, or rather, they were not existent. Morgan then huffed her traditional 'hmph!' as she stormed out with her hands on her hips, straight out of the door.
"I should of mentioned the poor room service too," she said to herself. "How hard is it to ask for a parfait at 3:00 a.m in the morning? It's a joke!"
Soon she regained her composure, only to spot something she hasn't seen before. It seemed like... a hedgehog... thingy? At least, that's what she thought. Of course, trainers were nearby, so, no one would be rude enough to validate a pokemon's existance, especially if it belonged to them.
"...Just what is that[i/]?" Morgan asked, after she approached the small group. She crouched down to observe the little pokemon.
Aberdeen gave Christina a glance and a shrug before crouching down beside his pokémon as well.
"It's Chocolate!" he replied cheerfully, wondering who this sudden girl might be. "I mean, he's not made of chocolate so don't try to eat him, please. It's his name, and he's a Quilladin."
Christina, on the other hand, simply gave the girl a look as she crouched down in front of Chocolate, folding her arms across her chest with a fairly neutral expression on her face.
"And are you proud to have something like this.. this...Chocolate aka. a Quilladin as a pokemon partner?" Morgan asked as she looked up at the young man. "Allow me to introduce you to something. It's called, standards."
Raising a brow, Christina took a slight step forwards, as if wanting to emphasize herself. "Sorry, but who are you again? And what exactly is wrong with Chocolate? For your information, Chocolate is an amazing Pokémon, he's helped out Deen and I in more than one tough spot."
"If Chocolate's my standard, then I'm pretty badass," Aberdeen said with a wink towards Christina. "Who are you to talk anyways?" he shot back at the new girl.
"First of all, my name is Morgan," Morgan replied. "And secondly, try taking some chill pills with your whine. I was only asking, is all. Chocolate, was it? Well, if he's that important to you, then I guess that's okay. Odd as the pokemon looks, anyway... And you are?"
This girl certainly had a bite to her, Aberdeen thought and wrinkled his nose a bit. "I'm Aberdeen," he said, stubbornly staying cheerful. "And this is Christina. We're traveling trainers! Hey, do you happen to know if there's a gym in Azalea?"
Christina simply huffed and gave a little nod, keeping her arms folded across her chest. She was clearly not a fan of this girl.
"I don't really pay much attention to hick towns," Morgan pointed out as she stood up. "But if there's really a gym, then color me interested! I've gotten the badge from Violet City, see? But I suppose you're trying to collect as well, Abra? Er.. Abdul? Abba... Aber...deen? That's your name, right?"
Ab scoffed, but smiled. "Aberdeen, yeah. I guess you can call me Deen if you want," he added, with an unsure glance at Tina. She had been the only one to call him that up until now. He almost regretted suggesting it to Morgan, because some part of him wanted that nickname to be special.
He quickly shaped up again, though. "I've got the Violet badge too! I've decided to challenge all the gyms in Johto. We've got to find the Azalea one!"
"...You make it sound as if we're playing a game of 'where's waldo?'," Morgan followed up with a sigh. "However, I suppose I need to find it too. How about the Gym leader? Did you deduce a possible plan for defeating them?"
"I don't even know what kind of gym leader Azalea has. Probably not bird pokémon, is all I know. So, uh, no. No plan yet! But we'll crush them, right Chocolate?"
Chocolate flexed even more at the mention of his name again.
Letting out a little snicker at Chocolate, Christina's mood seemed to thaw a little as she bent down to pat him on the head, smiling. "Well, I'm planning on challenging the gym too, but I think I'll let you two have your fun first. I want to have a look around, see if anybody's seen Sindy or Winter in town."
"Oh," Ab said, feeling a sting of guilt from having been so cheerful when their pokémon were still gone.
The red-haired girl looked a little absent-minded for a moment before shaking her head, standing up with a smile again. "I hope you two'll do well, though. I've heard the leader here isn't a pushover. One of her Pokémon is supposedly super strong."
"Just a moment," Morgan started. "Sindy and... Winter? You know, if you're looking for the season of winter, try Snowpoint City in Sinnoh."
"No, not like that," Ab said and couldn't help a smile. "She means my Whismur, I named him Winter. And her Quilava, Sindy. They are, uh... Well, we don't really know where they are. So we keep looking."
He put a reassuring hand on Christina's shoulder.
"As a fellow trainer, I should be lecturing you both on how to take better care of your pokemon!" Morgan snapped. "But, it seems as though you.. knew that. I'll help you look, if I see them, that is. How I would be saddened if someone happened to my darling Combusken..."
Christina seemed just about ready to give Morgan an earful, until she added in the second part of her statement. This calmed her down somewhat, offering a light smile towards Aberdeen, nodding her head back at Morgan.
"That's... actually really nice of you Thank you. And... you really have a Combusken? My brother has the evolution of it! A Blaziken! I'd love to meet yours, though."
"I-It's not like I'm doing this for you or anything..." Morgan grumbled as she blushed. "And um, sure. If I remember."
Aberdeen now looked from one girl to the other. He really wanted to check out the gym, if there was one, but at the same time he didn't want to let Christina down.
"So..." he began cautiously, "how about... We look for a gym first? Maybe the gym leader knows about things that are going on around Azalea and might have heard something about missing pokémon?" He was not sure that it sounded convincing, but it was worth a try.
Christina smiled and shook her head. "It's okay Deen. I think it's better if we split up, and I want to prepare before facing the gym first, anyway. But you two go ahead." She paused, looking over at the girl before offering her a hand. "It was nice meeting you, Morgan."
"Okay!" Ab said with relief. "I'll see you later then!"
He turned to Morgan. "So, ready to find a gym?"
"Very well," she said. "However, if you find yourself crying at the end, don't come to me."
Vincent & Melody & Sarah
After their encounter with the strange creature, things had been rather quiet as Melody, Vincent, and the Beldum exited from the secret passage that the floating eyeball had discovered. Perhaps it was because neither one of the two trainers actually knew what to say, or perhaps the whole event had been so unsettling that neither one of them wanted to really speak at the moment. Truth be told, Melody honestly would not have been too surprised if the creature had decided to eat the both of them right then and there. She was quite surprised that it had not, in fact.
Eventually the brown-haired girl broke the silence, her eyes gazing down to the crystal shard that she now carried in her hand. "...So, what do you think that thing was?" Melody inquired. She knew that Vincent most likely would not have the answer, but felt that something, anything breaking the creepy silence of the cave was more than welcome at this point. "I'm no researcher or anything like that, but that... thing didn't look like any Pokémon I've ever seen..."
"You act like there is only 150 Pokémon around, Melody," Vincent said with a sneer. "I am sure there are plenty more than we think are out there." Vincent powered through the cave with newfound determination to get out and take it some fresh air. The Beldum continued to follow along, occasionally leading the way for the two. Vincent followed along, knowing this time that it wasn't leading to some random cavern. Finally, he saw a glint of light. "Hey, I think this little guy is getting us out of here."
"About time... I've had enough of this cave to last me a life time," Melody replied, not really acknowledging Vincent's earlier remark. She found it a bit odd that the boy did not seem even the slight bit interested in discussing what that creature was, but in the end Melody chalked it up to him maybe just wanting to forget the encounter for the time being. "So... I guess Azalea is right on the other side of this cave, huh?"
Vincent almost smiled as they inched closer to the archway, the sweet embrace of the sunlight within arm's reach. "It better be," he said. "I got a Gym Leader to beat and a badge to claim." The Beldum continued to follow as Vincent stepped outside the cave, floating around the boy's head with a curious look, but seemingly polite enough to allow Vincent and Melody to talk.
"Oh, yeah... I forgot there was a gym over in the next town..." Melody replied, placing her hands behind her back as she walked. "I wonder what kind of gym it is? Hopefully it's not one like the first gym was... I kinda had a disadvantage there, ya know?"
"Not sure," he said with a shrug. "Doesn't matter to me. I'm going to win regardless." The Beldum nearby seemed to dance around in agreement.
"Looks like your friend agrees with you," Melody said, giggling at how Beldum was still floating rather close to Vincent. She gave a curious glance from the Pokémon and over towards the trainer. "So... You gonna catch him or something? He seems to like being around you a lot."
"Oh right. I guess I should, huh?" Vincent asked, before looking at the Beldum. "But, he's got to prove he's got that fighting spirit. Hanzo and Brian do. You think you got it, little guy?" Vincent said, glaring down the Beldum like a predator leering at prey. The Beldum was taken aback by Vincent's rather sudden aggression, but leaned forward to face him. Vincent let a small smirk out, before dropping a Pokeball and leaping back.
Emerging from the light was Brian, the small Pidgey. It was the first time in a while the Bird Pokémon was released from his ball, so it stretched out with a yawn. "Alright, Brian. Simple little match. Weaken the Beldum!" Vincent yelled at the Pidgey, which looked over at the Beldum with a curious look. It was this moment that Vincent realized he would probably want to avoid his go to strategy with Brian, as the Beldum only liked him because cleaning out the single beading red eye. Him liking me already will make taming him a lot easier, the logical part of Vincent's mind said flatly. That and I'll admit, the little guy has grown on me despite leading us to some random giant Pokémon's house.
Vincent's dialogue in his head left Brian open for a sneak attack as the Beldum charged forward with a take down, the one small Pokémon rolling on the dirt ground in a small dust cloud. Rather suddenly, Brian burst out leaving the Beldum in the dust quite literally. "Brian, circle back with a tackle." The Pidgey swooped down with a wide tackle, but seemingly bounced off with Beldum seemingly unfazed from the blow. "Well, that confirms that," Vincent observed. "Steel types are hard to hurt with physical moves like that." Vincent snapped his fingers in frustration. Brian flew back to deliver another tackle again, only dishing out a glancing blow. The Beldum, catching on, charged forward with another Take Down, hurting Brian much more than before.
It was at this point that Vincent caught on to something. Take Down was a damaging move, no doubt but it was high risk. Beldum, despite landing what Vincent could only call a critical hit, seemed wounded himself. The recoil had weakened the Beldum quite significantly. "I doubt he can take much more before fainting," Vincent observed. "Brian, use Gust!" Safely in the air, Brian buffeted the Beldum with a sharp burst of air, barely scratching the surface of Beldum's crystal-like armor. The Beldum lunged forward again, missing Pidgey but the skin of its teeth.
"Too bad you don't have a Fire-type or something..." Melody mused. The girl had taken a seat on a nearby rock and was watching the battle unfold before her. At some point during the battle, she had called Franky out of his ball, and was now happily playing with the Sandile a little bit. "That would make fighting Beldum a bit easier... Oooh, or a Fighting-type!"
"Can it!" Vincent yelled back at Melody. "I already have a fire type in mind, just waiting for him to pop up.." Vincent sighed. "Brian can handle it. I trust him." Vincent believed that the superior maneuverability was all he really needed. That, and the Beldum was hurting itself with its own moves. Figure...Pidgey dishes out two Quick Attacks and manages to avoid the Take Down at least once...yeah, that should do it. "Brian, Quick Attack!" The Pidgey flew down from its vantage point and managed to do a fair amount of damage, seemingly more than before. Yet, even so, it was hard to tell as Beldum's staunch defense had tanked all of Brian's attack. The steel type replied with a quick Take Down, seemingly weaker as if the Pokémon was trying to hold back in order to stay longer in the fight. Brian spun around and snapped out a Quick Attack, deflecting off the Beldum and rolling on the ground due to fatigue and injury. As Pidgey fell back with a quick chirp, Vincent threw a Pokeball at the Beldum, absorbing the steel type in light. The ball squirmed on the ground for a few stiff bounces, before settling on the ground quietly.
"Ooooh, that was some fancy battling right there, Vinny! I knew you could do it the whole time!" Melody cheered, smiling brightly at the boy as she hopped off the rock she had been sitting on and made her way over towards the boy. Franky followed close behind, flashing his own rather toothy-grin at Vincent. "Are ya gonna name him?"
"You really like naming Pokémon eh?" Vincent asked. He hadn't thought of naming the Pokémon . "Tank. Because he basically took all of Brian's moves without flinching," he finally said after a pause, before recalling Pidgey. "How's that name?"
"Kind of a funny name... I mean, it's no Franky or Blossom, but I guess that'll work out fine!" Melody replied happily.
"I prefer my names over yours, personally," Vincent insisted.
A soft ping sound could be heard coming from the dormant Pokeball which lay on the damp and murky cave floor. "YES!" shouted Sarah as she clenched her fist tight. "Another addition to the team". She walked over and picked her new companion up off the floor. She stared at the Pokeball with a big grin before she started to speak softly, "Beldum huh? You're a strange little guy you know that?"
Sarah's grin started to slowly disappear as she placed Beldum's Pokeball on her belt. She let out a sigh and sat down on a small rock nearby. Where are you Fennekin? I miss you a lot, I just hope I'm not too late that's all. As much as Sarah didn't want to admit nor think about it, Fennekin was truly lost. Who knows where the little fox might be. Considering the fact that the thieves have had an entire night's head start and that they possibly might know this region better than Sarah, a better question she should be asking herself is, 'Who should she catch to replace Fennekin? She wiped the tears that were building up in her eyes and decided to press forward, no good sitting in this cave crying now is there?
Sarah slowly pushed through the cave but her progress was halted due to some faint echoing voices. She peered from behind a rock and could see a boy and a girl standing just up ahead.
Sarah swallowed a lump in her throat, dried her eyes as much as she could before jumping up and strolling casually towards the trainers. Time to make a good first impression! thought Sarah as she neared the trainers. Everything seemed to be going well until she felt her left foot catch on something. Her shoe had hit a small stone in the ground causing her to stumble awkwardly towards the trainers. She hastily recovered her footing and smiled nervously as she stopped just a few feet away.
"Hey there! I'm Sarah, it's nice to meet you"
"Right," Vincent replied flatly. "Did you need something?" Vincent scanned the girl and was hardly impressed, turning away from the girl rather quickly and returning his attention to Melody.
Melody smiled softly at the girl who identified herself as Sarah. Extending a hand forward, the brown-haired girl shook Sarah's hand and nodded. "Nice to meet you too! My name is Melody, and this guy behind me is Vinny!" Melody greeted, motioning to the boy standing behind her as she spoke. She slowly looked over at the rocks that Sarah had stumbled over, before glancing back over in her direction. "Um... Are you okay? You didn't hurt yourself in there or anything, did you?"
Sarah was slightly taken back by Vincent's flat and disinterested tone but quickly recovered thanks to Melody. On the surface at least, Melody was easy to read, she was clearly the cheery and jolly force behind this two person team, Vincent on the other hand was a tad bit more difficult. What did he bring to the table that interested Melody? Why was she traveling with such a jerk?
"The rocks? Pfft nah I'm fine, happens all the time. Well I mean it doesn't happen ALL the time but it happens often enough I guess. Heh, anyway uhh … you two wouldn't happen to know the way outta this place? I'm kinda lost and I need to get to the next town as soon as possible" said Sarah in an upbeat tone while keeping her vision mostly focused on Melody.
"There's light that way," Vincent gestured towards the archway in the distance with what appearing to be the evening sun peering in. "You're welcome," Vincent said as monotone as ever. "Let's go Melody," he continued, grabbing her by the collar and slowly dragging her away.
"H-Hey, wait a minute!" Melody replied, almost tripping over her own feet from Vincent's rather sudden decision to escort her out of the cave. The girl managed to pry her shirt from the boy's grasp, before glancing back over her shoulder at Sarah. "She was lost, Vinny. We should at least do the nice thing and let her tag along with us out of the cave! Besides, we were lost in it ourselves not too long ago."
Despite Vincent dragging Melody towards the exit of the cave, Franky had decided to hang back a bit. The Sandile slowly made his way closer to Sarah, slowly circling around the girl curiously. For some reason or another, he decided to slow down a bit while he circled around Sarah's backside, letting out a small gurgle before returning to look up at her with a rather tooth-baring smile.
Once again Vincent made no effort to prove to Sarah that he wasn't anything short of a real jerk. Sarah shrugged off his attitude and watched as both he and Melody headed towards the exit, not Melody's choice of course.
Sarah could faintly hear both her and Vincent talking amongst themselves. They were close enough to hear but no so close so that Sarah could hear everything they were saying. She awkwardly looked around the cave in an attempt to make it seem as if she wasn't listening. The situation was tense to say the least. Sarah continued to look around until her attention was caught by a small little Pokémon letting out a small laugh just behind her. It was a Sandile! And a cheeky one at that!
"Haha! What do you think you're doing back there little guy? Didn't your mother ever teach you manners?" said Sarah in her usual cheery tone. As creepy as the actions of the little Sandile were, she couldn't help but laugh.
"Damn it, Melody. Put your Pokémon in their Pokeballs more often! At least new captures!" Vincent yelled, clearly annoyed. He released the small girl, clearly sighing. "Go get Franky, alright? I know how much you like him already." Vincent rubbed his eyes and crossed his arms, waiting patiently. He would be the first to admit he would like to let them run free more often but he knew how wild Pokémon could be, especially one that were just caught. It would be awhile before he would allow Bane or Tank to run around...then again, Tank seemed to really like him.
"Come on now, I know they can't like being cooped up in those little balls all the time, Vinny..." Melody retorted, quickly making her way towards Sarah and her Sandile. She gave the girl a small smile, quickly bending down to pet Franky on the head. "Um... Sorry about that. I haven't really had him long and I guess he's not too used to following me around outside of his ball... I swear he's never done this before, really!"
"Melody...he did it the first time he saw you, I thought? I mean he did untie your shoes...or at least that's what you claim" Vincent yelled from where he stood, with a sarcastic shrug of the shoulders.
Melody looked over her shoulder at Vincent, shooting him a rather surprised look. "Did he...?" The girl glanced down at Franky, who in turn gave her as innocent of a look as a Sandile could probably muster... which quite honestly did not look too innocent in the slightest bit. "I... Don't recall that."
Sarah returned Melody's smile with a slightly weaker one. She really had no idea how to act right now considering this is the first time that she's met someone who really has no interest in becoming friends, that person being Vincent of course.
"Listen … Melody is it? I really didn't mean to come between you and your … you know, boyfriend" whispered Sarah quietly with an innocent smile.
Melody's eyes widened, a facial expression which quickly resembled a Deerling in the headlights. "W-What? Um, no. No, no no... It's nothing like that at all!" The girl's face was beet-red at this point. She glanced back and forth between the two, trying desperately to get her blush to retreat from her face. "We're just friends! Traveling to Azalea Town together, and that's it! Right, Vinny?"
Vincent walked over and threw his arm around Melody. "Oh come on now, Mel. Let's not lie to our new friend here," Vincent began, half hugging the blushing girl. "We've been dating for a long time. It might even be destiny that we met back at Violet. The road together has felt like months though. She is just shy and likes to sell this...thing short ya know?" he finished, flashing a half smile at both Melody and Sarah.
Melody could not find even one clue at how to form the words at this point. The girl's face grew even more red, if it was possible. She shot Vincent a look at that practically screamed for him to stop at this point.
"I knew it! Come on Melody you don't have to lie about it. You guys look great together and forgive me for saying but Vincent's a good looking guy … his personality could use some work though, but still … a nice catch if I do say so myself" said Sarah with a large grin plastered across her face.
"See? You don't have to be embarrassed because of me~" Vincent egged on, internally laughing as he hugged her closer, his face brushing across hers.
Melody began to quickly squirm and fidget, pulling away from Vincent as best as she could. The girl did manage to trip over her own feet this time as she did this, causing her to land roughly on her backside with a small whimper of embarrassment. Not wanting the moment to become even more awkward than it already had become, Melody did not waste a single moment and picked herself off the ground, quickly dusting herself off before making her way towards the door.
"You were in a hurry to get to Azalea, right?" she asked, looking over her shoulder at Vincent. "Let's hurry up and get going, then! Come on!"
Vincent merely shrugged his shoulders and followed her, keeping some distance from the girl as to give her the breathing room he robbed her of only moments ago.
"What a strange couple!" whispered Sarah as she fought to keep the laughter at bay. They did say they were going to Azalea though. I wonder if that's the next town? she thought as she watched Melody and Vincent slowly head towards the exit.
"Hey! Mind if I tag along with you guys to the next town? Some company would be uhh ... nice for once." said Sarah with a loud enough tone so that both Melody and Vincent could hear her. She darted her eyes back and forth between the two, unsure of which trainer was going to answer first.
Melody turned and looked over at Sarah, a weak smile gracing her lips. While the girl usually tried to be friendly and put the best foot forward in any interactions she happened across, the last thing that she wanted to do at this point was allow the girl her more or less (even if innocently) just embarrassed the living hell out of her. However at the same time, Melody just could not bring up the will to.
Rather, the brown-haired girl found herself replying with a short nod. "Of course you can," Melody said, slowly slipping into yet another long-winded ramble. "I know for starters just how this place can get on someone's nerves quick. I bet it can only get worse when you're traveling around on your own. I know I'd be screaming for some social interaction at this point if it were me. Some dark and damp and creepy cave? I'd be all like, 'Hello?!' You know what I mean?"
"Oh, I think we can imagine that," Vincent quipped with a slight smirk. It only took a few moment for them to leave the cave, having been only a few meters away from the exit. At least it felt that way to Vincent as it felt the couple had been in the cave for months. The light felt blinding to Vincent's eyes. It took several minutes to recover, mostly because the fresh air felt foreign and the view of grass and trees was alien to the young man. "Azalea ought to be close now," Vincent said when his eyes stopped agonizing him.
Sarah slowly jogged after Vincent and Melody, slowing her pace down as she neared them. Her legs were tired enough as it is, the sooner she got to Azela town, the better. All of a sudden, the sharp piercing light of the sun hit Sarah dead in the face causing her to avert her eyes. She took a few seconds but soon regained her composure and looked around. The area around her was paradise compared to the dank and dirty cave she had to trudge through in order to get here. A soft breeze brushed against her face as a smile spread across her face.
"Man is it good to be outta that cave!"
"I'm a bit beat too... I dunno about you guys, but I'm looking forward to finally reaching a Center and taking a load off, ya know?" Melody commented.
Vincent did not really bother replying to either girl and started marching down the path, firmly believing the town's limits were due west in a short walk. At least that's what the maps said, and being from Goldenrod, he vaguely knew where the small town was in relation to his urban mess of a hometown.
"So, what are you gonna do when you reach the town, Vinny?" Melody questioned. "Are you gonna call it a day and get some rest or head straight for the gym?"
"I'll probably sleep," Vincent said nonchalantly. "I normally don't get tired, but that cave...something about it drained me." He figured it was the seeing that strange creature, or the ordeals with dealing with his newly found friend in Beldum that exhausted him so greatly. Regardless of the source, he was feeling fatigued. A quick rest, even for a few hours, would do him wonders.
Melody nodded in response, remaining silent for a moment as the trio made their way into town. "I guess that means that once we get to the Pokémon Center, me and Vinny will be going our separate ways... We've been traveling together for so long now, I was honestly starting to get used to it..."
Vincent walked to the Pokémon Center and shoved his meager collection of Pokeballs on the desk before the nurse and silently requested for healing. It had be a long time since he was in one of these centers so he could feel himself already relaxing. He sighed as he got his team back from the nurse. "Can I get a room please?"
"Of course! For how many?"
Vincent looked back at Melody, considering to continue the joke he planted earlier. "One," he finally said. The nurse handed him a key and he turned to the others. "Good night," he finally said, before walking upstairs and locking himself in his rented room.
"Guess I should probably heal my Pokémon as well. Long journey … you know?" said Sarah in a hesitant tone. She removed all her Pokeballs and placed them slowly and carefully on the counter for the nurse to collect. Sarah used this brief opportunity to awkwardly lean her arm on the counter and slouch her body.
"So … Melody. Um … thanks for letting me tag along. Probably wouldn't have found the exit if it wasn't for you guys, heh. What's your uh, plan now?"
Melody had not actually put a great deal of thought into what her plan of action should actually be up until this point. The girl knew that she wanted to take on Azalea Town's gym at some point, but there was also the point that Napoleon was still missing. It was true that Melody had crossed through Union Cave and caught Franky without his presence. However at the same time, Melody knew that she could not keep plowing ahead on her journey without her Buizel. She wondered if it was possible for the girl to find some information on those Team Rocket thugs who had taken him here.
"Well, I do need to take on the gym while I'm here, but... I need to look for someone," Melody finally replied. "Someone took something really important from me, so I'm gonna look around starting tomorrow to see if I can turn anything up. What about you?"
"I'm sorry to hear that someone took something from you. Truth is, I lost something really special as well and every day that I don't find it, it hurts me a little more inside. Heh, sorry… didn't mean to bring the mood down. So! You said there's a gym in town? Wouldn't mind challenging it myself."
Sarah knew that finding Fennekin was top priority but at the same time she didn't want to pass up the opportunity to challenge the gym. Challenging the gym meant using up time that would be better suited to finding her lost Pokémon. Thoughts raced through her head until they vanished at the sound of a voice. Sarah quickly snapped out of her trance and looked behind her to find the nurse standing with all of Sarah's Pokeballs on the counter.
"Thank you" smiled Sarah as she picked them up and clipped them onto her belt.
Melody took a moment to hand the nurse the balls containing her own Pokémon. She was a little confused about Sarah's sudden change in demeanor. However, what she was sure about was that whatever had happened to Sarah, it definitely reminded her of herself. Melody seemed a bit apprehensive about poking into Sarah's private concerns, but she had something she wanted to find out.
"You lost something too?" Melody replied in question, after what more than likely felt like an eternity passing. "Um... If it's not too much trouble... Would you mind telling me what?"
Sarah was a bit taken back by Melody's sudden interest in her problem. Of course there was no denying that Sarah was the one who brought the subject up in the first place so naturally Melody would inquire to see what's wrong. Sarah *did* want someone to talk to about her troubles, she was just unsure if she should do it now. After battling with herself for a few second she came to the conclusion that she may as well tell Melody. She's the only "friend" Sarah has made on this journey so far, and who knows when the next person wil come along. She inhaled and then exhaled deeply before looking at Melody to tell the story.
"Okay so … before I set out on my journey I visited Professor Pine to get my first Pokémon, I chose a Fennekin. We traveled together as best friends right up to the point where I fell asleep one night in the woods and when I woke up in the morning, her Pokéball was gone. Stolen by some thieves in the night. Perhaps the same ones I battled at the Museum not that long ago? Who knows! All I know for sure is that Fennekin is out there somewhere and I don't have the slightest clue as to how to find her … but anyway. Sorry if I made the mood more depressing that I already had. It was just nice to finally talk to someone about it," said Sarah as she masked the tears welling up in her eyes with a smile.
Melody clenched her fists as she listened to Sarah's story. So this was not just a single incident that happened to herself and Vincent. The brown-haired girl began to wonder whether or not this sort of thing had happened to Christina and the others. Still, she could not just leave Sarah standing there on the verge of tears. Melody stepped closer to Sarah and put a hand on the taller girl's shoulder.
"The same thing happened to me and Vinny on our way here, Sarah. Both of us lost a Pokémon to a thief just like you," Melody explained. "I lost my Buizel and he lost his Honedge. Vinny says he knows who did it though... He blamed it on some group of thugs named Team Rocket... In fact, I've already had a run in with one of them myself..."
"So … Team Rocket then? Do you know where they are?! We could go get our Pokémon back right now!" said Sarah in an abrupt and hasty tone, taking little time to digest what Melody had just said.
"Wait … you said you had a run in with them. What did they look like?" added Sarah once Melody's last sentence had caught her attention. If this Team Rocket that Melody describes looks the same as the thugs that Sarah had run into at the museum then it'll make much more sense. Sarah's confrontation of the thugs at the museum must have angered them and in order to seek revenge they knocked her unconscious with a Koffing. However perhaps stealing her Pokémon was an even greater method of teaching her not to meddle in other people's business.
Melody closed her eyes for a moment, thinking back to her encounter with the Team Rocket member she had way back while on the way to Violet City. "Let's see... I think they wore a jumpsuit-like thing... It was all black, with white gloves and boots. They had a black hat too... Oh, yeah! And this one had a big, red 'R' on his chest. Does that look like the guys you ran into?"
"I do remember them being dressed in all back … hmm, but I don't remember an 'R' on their chest. I did see a face, pretty clearly actually."
She had never given it much thought but this quick recollection of the events had reminded Sarah that she got a pretty good look at one of the thieves. So much so that she'd probably be able to identify the thug if she met them face to face.
"Hmm... Well they do sound pretty similar regardless," Melody replied. She paused for a moment as the nurse came back, collecting her team from the woman with a quick word of thanks before resuming her conversation with Sarah once more. "I think we're definitely talking about the same people here, so yeah! I think we should definitely see what we can do about hunting them down and all that sort of thing."
"Alright then! Umm … so where do we start? I know next to nothing about this town. You mentioned there was a gym, maybe the gym leader knows something we don't. You wanna go check it out?" quizzed Sarah as she felt her spirits lift. She was finally getting somewhere in her search for Fennekin, as long as she kept tabs on Melody and Vincent then the chance of finding her Pokémon were greater.
Melody nodded. "Sounds like a good idea to me. If anyone probably knows anything weird going on in town or stuff like that, it's probably the gym leader. Although it is starting to get a bit late, yeah? Maybe we should start this plan off in the morning?"
Sarah took a quick glance outside and seen that it was indeed getting late. "Maybe you're right yeah. Get a good night's sleep and then be well rested for tomorrow Sounds good!"
Sarah turned herself around and called the nurse over. "Could I get a room for one please?"
"Certainly"
Sarah got the key from the nurse before turning to Melody. "Guess I'll see you sometime tomorrow then?"
"Sounds like a plan, sure!" Melody replied. "We'll meet up down here first thing in the morning, and then we'll see what we can find out."
Melody smiled brightly at Sarah. The shorter girl was honestly starting to have a good feeling about this whole incident. Sure, she really did not know Sarah that well yet. However, Melody could tell that she was an honest girl that cared about her Pokémon just as much as she did.
"Alright well I'll see you tomorrow morning then Melody. Bye!" said Sarah as she returned Melody's smile. She soon turned on her heel and headed towards her room while the days happenings flashed through her head. She finally reached her room and slipped inside, being sure to lock the door behind her.
Vincent Baker and Christina Langley- Reconciling in Azalea
OOC:
Spoiler:
A groggy morning was to be expected considering Vincent's adventure in the cave. He would never get enough to sleep to make up for it. Though, it was the best sleep he had in a while, even better than those back at home. So he couldn't complain too much. He still would because that's just who he was. Vincent came downstairs, fixing up his clothes with his step. Ruffling his hair shortly before putting on his skull cap, Vincent looked around at the lower level of the Pokemon Center. Phew, no one I know is here, Vincent thought to himself. I can finally travel in peace. After double checking his bag on the counter and clipping his Pokeballs onto his belt, Vincent figured that he would likely head to the Pokemon Gym and challenge Bugsy. After nabbing the badge, Vincent would barrel ahead to Goldenrod. Time was of the essence.
Vincent walked through the doors, eyes fixated to the ground deep in thought. Within a few steps into the fresh air, Vincent felt himself collide into another body. "Aw, come on. Really? Why are you just standing there?"
Christina blinked, stumbling forwards as someone knocked into her from behind. Turning around, she raised her brows in surprise, seeing Vincent once again. "... Oh! Uh, Vincent. Hey. I'm... kind of surprised to see you here." She paused, before checking where she was standing, shaking her head and taking a step to the side to not be in the way of anymore people, her cheeks flushing a little from embarrassment.
"... Sorry. I just said bye to a friend of mine and I was sort of figuring out where to go to find some information, and-" She paused, shaking her head and waving a hand dismissively. "You know what, it doesn't matter. You probably don't care anyway."
"Well, you are right. I don't care...but what do you mean it is a surprise to see me here? The town has a gym and I am trainer. Put two and two together," Vincent said with a cocky smirk. "I am more surprised to see you here. You know, considering the dark cave and Aberdeen or whatever his name being easy to scare," Vincent teased.
Shrugging lightly, Christina lifted a hand to scratch the back of her head, glancing over her shoulder at where Aberdeen and Morgan had disappeared off to. "He's... just a little afraid of ghosts. He's got his reasons." She turned back to Vincent, quirking a brow, putting on an amused smile of her own.
"And what about you? I heard from Melody that you saved her in the ruins of Alph? That doesn't seem like you."
"Eh, I guess I have my moments," Vincent was forced to admit. "Things happened. I wasn't about to let her be left at the mercy at a bunch of Smeargle things. I'm not that cruel, Christina."
"It's just nice to know that despite you acting as tough as you do, there's still some decency left in you." She teased, sending Vincent a little grin. "Anyway, Deen and someone named Morgan went to challenge the gym leader, so you might have to wait for them to finish first." She jabbed her thumb over her shoulder in the direction of the somewhat larger building than most of the other houses in town.
"Tch. Really?" Vincent asked, visibly frustrated. "And I take it there ain't much to do in this town is there?" He sighed, crossing his arms and stomping his foot on the ground, racking his brain for something to do to waste time.
"Well, not as far as I know. It's not that big a town. But maybe-" She paused, brows furrowing as she looked him over, visibly in thought. After a few moments, she shook her head. "Nah. Nevermind. Sorry Vincent, can't help you. And I need to get going anyways, I've got something I need to take care of."
"Maybe what?" Vincent said. "And why are you in such a hurry?" Vincent was not surprised that the girl was criminally unhelpful. The two hardly enjoyed the other's presence. Vincent's abrasive nature did not meld well with her equally judgmental attitude. And that was just his perspective. He was sure that she had her own opinion on the entire issue. The two, as far as he was concerned, were oil and water and destined to never come to any sort of agreement.
Christina folded her arms across her chest, looking off to the side while changing her weight from one foot to the other. On one hand, she knew Vincent wasn't -that- bad at heart, but on the other hand, he'd probably just laugh or shout at her like he'd done the first time they'd met. In the end, she made her choice.
"... While Deen and I were camping on the route right next to the ruins, we each lost one of our Pokémon. Deen thinks they got lost, but... I don't think so. I think they were taken by someone. I wanted to ask a few people around town if they'd seen them. Was going to suggest you could help me ask around if you wanted, but it's not your problem. So don't worry about it."
"You too, huh?" Vincent asked, mirroring Christina's body language as a subconscious response to hers. "Melody and I had each of our Pokemon stolen probably the same night. Her Buizel...Napoleon was it? And my Honedge. I just caught him too..." Vincent's thoughts trailed. He mumbled inaudible murmurs to himself. "Well, I did give up on looking for him, but I got time to kill. I'll tag along."
Looking back to Vincent at his comment about Melody and himself losing a Pokémon, Christina raised her brows in surprise. "... It can't be a coincidence, then. And unless they went back to the town, they had to have come this way." She lowered her hands, placing them on her hips, feeling a little restless suddenly. "You sure, though? It's not going to be all that high-flying action and mindblowing adventures you're used to." She added with a wry little smile.
Vincent walked closer to her with his hands in his pockets, looking her in the eyes confidently: "Like I said, I got time to kill. I'll tag along for a while and then challenge the gym," Vincent said. "Scratch that. Dominate the gym. But for now, let's go look for your Pokemon."
Christina met his gaze unfazed, responding with a wry smile and a nod, lifting a hand to pat his shoulder, her other hand digging into the pocket of her shorts. "Alright, sounds like a plan. Might even come with you and see how you do against Bugsy. If that'd be okay with you. I mean, a strong trainer like you probably have nothing to be ashamed of, right?" She asked with a playful grin.
"Heh, if you really want to see how it's done, be my guest. I got a couple of tricks up my sleeve so maybe you could learn a thing or two," Vincent smirked, glancing at her. "Well, lead the way." Vincent took a step aside and gestured to Christina, insisting she lead the two somewhere.
"Wow. Be careful, Vincent, or I might start thinking that you can actually be a gentleman." With a snicker and another smirk his way, she took the lead, heading towards the mart not lying too far from the center itself. There'd probably be a few people around they could ask about some missing Pokémon or shady characters.
After about an hour so of asking around and turning up little to no clues about what happened to their respective Pokemon, Vincent slumped down into the bench. "Well that was just about pointless," he said with a sign, throwing his head back to stare at the sky. "I think I might have known more before we poked our noses into everyone's business."
Christina slumped down in the seat next to him, elbows resting on her knees and her head dropping into her hands, letting out a sigh and frowning. "Tell me about it. Seems like absolutely nothing happens in town..."
Shaking her head, she reached into her bag and searched through it, picking out a wrapped sandwich. Leaning back against the bench, she glanced to Vincent. "So... hey, aside from the Pokémon that was taken, did you catch any other new ones since last?"
"Yeah. Caught myself a Magikarp and a Beldum," Vincent said almost instantly, expecting the question. "Melody doesn't like the fish, which is hilarious. Beldum seems to like me. He followed me throughout the entire cave we just got through before he insisted I catch him." Vincent popped back up looking at Christina, throwing his arms on the back of the bench. "What about you?"
She began unwrapping the sandwich, raising her brows. "The Magikarp'll come in handy if you can train it properly. Which... isn't really easy with Magikarps. Beldum though? Nice. That's the... metal type, right?"
Taking a bite of her sandwich, she nodded down at the two extra balls at her belt. "Mrrh. Got myself a Bagon and a Haunter! Deen wasn't too crazy about the Haunter, but I like him. He's got alot of spirit." She almost took another bite of her sandwich before wincing. "... Ugh, that pun wasn't even intended."
"I was about to say...'That was kind of lame' or something along those lines," Vincent said, as an aside. "Anyway, your team seems pretty good. And I know all too well that 'Deen' doesn't like ghosts. My Honedge and he got along reaaaal well," Vincent chuckled, remembering the prank he pulled fondly. He sighed, almost missing the little guy even with the new additions to the team. Vincent fell silent, unsure of what to say considering that he and Christina had so little in common.
Christina couldn't help but snicker at the thought of pranking Deen, smiling and shaking her head. "That does sound pretty fun. You should lay off of him a bit, though, Vincent. At least with the ghost thing. Something to do with bad memories and all." She sent Vincent a smile before looking down at her sandwich, breaking off half of it, offering the unbitten part to the boy besides her. "Want some lunch? It's salami."
Vincent was taken aback at the gesture, raising an eyebrow in a perplexed fashion. Vincent leaned forward and gingerly extended his hand. "Are you sure you want to offer me anything like that?"
"Why wouldn't I? It's just a sandwich. Although it's a pretty good one, I'll give you that..." She smiled, placing the half a sandwich in his hand before leaning back in the bench, stretching her legs out in front of her while glancing down the small road through town, taking another bite out of her own part of the lunch.
Accepting the gesture and taking a bite, hiding the pleasure he had from having something that wasn't candy or chips, Vincent gobbled down the food rather quickly. Vincent coughed near the end, realizing he ate way too quickly. He forced everything down with some effort. "So," Vincent said, defeating any of the heartburn with a wince. "What do I owe you now?"
Christina sent Vincent a little grin as he began coughing and basically choking on the food. She reached out, patting him on the back to try and help him get over it. At his question, she raised a brow. "Owe me?" Her amused smile turned a little more sincere and soft than the previous teasing expression. "You... don't have alot of friends, do you, Vincent? I don't expect anything in return. It's just... a nice thing to do for your friends, you know?"
"I see," Vincent said, unsure of how to respond to anything she said. "Where I come from, there is always a catch. So you could say, I don't know...'nice' as you would say." Vincent paused for a few moments. "But thanks, I guess."
Nodding her head softly, Christina gave Vincent a thoughtful look. She'd always suspected he grew up in a slightly rough family, but didn't feel it was right to ask him about it right now. Instead, she just smiled and bumped her shoulder against his. "Good thing you've got me and Melody to help you out with that then, huh? That's what friends are for, helping each other."
Vincent couldn't help but gawk at Christina. "So, we're friends now?"
"We got off to a rocky start, but... well, you saved Melody, and aside from being a bit full of yourself, you're a nice guy." She sent him a playful grin, shrugging her shoulders. "Unless you don't want to be friends, of course."
"I-" Vincent began to speak, but held his thoughts back for a moment. "I...yeah I guess we could give it a shot. I'm just not very good at it." Vincent found himself scratching his head and avoided making an eye contact with Christina as he spoke. He tried looking around for anything to change the topic, but failed to muster anything. Instead, he simply looked back, almost cracking a weak smile.
Christina couldn't help but smile in return, seeing Vincent trying his best at smiling, although it came off as more of a grimace than anything else. "Nobody's great at anything the first time. Important thing is that they're willing to try, right?"
She gave his thigh a pat before gesturing towards the gym, stretching her arms out with a soft sigh. "Alright, that's enough of a break for me. Deen and Morgan should be done at the gym. Up for showing me some of those moves you promised me, Vince?"
Another nickname? Great. Vincent stood up and cracked his back as he stretched. "Only if you promise to use them at least half as well as I do in your own battles," Vincent said. He offered a hand to help Christina to her own feet. "Well, let's go then. I'm raring to go to be honest."
Christina quirked a brow with a wry smirk, grabbing his hand and pulling herself up. "Let's just see how well you'll do first. I've heard Bugsy has a pretty nasty surprise up his sleeve." She then nodded, smiling brightly before the both of them headed in the direction of the gym.
Blaine VS Azalea Gym (Part 1)
Blaine wasn't sure what awoke him first. Either it was the light from the sun's rays hitting him in the eyes, or it was the wet substance on his arm. At first he figured that it must have rained last night and he just happened to get the room with a ceiling that leaked. But no, it wasn't. His eyes opened to see Derpy standing on the bed, and letting his drool drip onto his arm. The Croconaw burst into a loud foray of laughter as he saw his trainer's eyes open and he fell back… and off the bed. He hit the floor with a thud, but that didn't stop the gator from laughing like there was no tomorrow.
"Very funny. Haha." Blaine said mockingly as he get up from the bed and washed the drool from his arm, "So then, I was thinking we could look around for a bit and maybe see where to head next."
Derpy gurgled a bit and ran into the bathroom. He hopped onto the toiler and held out a flyer enthusiastically. Blaine dried off his hands and grabbed the paper, frowning as he looked over it, "A gym battle?" He asked as he looked over at Derpy. "I mean, you're strong enough, don't you think?"
Derpy just gurgled and puffed out his chest as he waved his little arms about frantically. Blaine looked back at the flyer, then over at Derpy and shrugged, "Well, I guess we can do it. I mean, I had nothing else planned to do here." The boy made his way out of the bathroom with Derpy following behind with a wide smile on his muzzle. "Let' see… I have four mon on me for now. Think that Dratini will fit in well with us?" Derpy titled his head and then gave a weak shrug in response. "We'll see how she does in the gym battle then, how about that? I do need to train the others as well, so this can be a mini training exercise for us."
Derpy happily gurgled as Blaine made his way out of his room and back to the welcome area of the pokemon center. Last night it hadn't been that filled given that it had been in the wee hours of the morning and only one of the nurses had been stationed at the desk. Now trainers were walking about, many of them with bug type pokemon tagging along. He could easily recognize common ones like Butterfree, but others were a complete mystery. There was this one small orange pokemon with mushrooms on it, and another was a green spider with black dots on its back.
Blaine wasn't sure if Derpy was in a mood to socialize, but it seemed that he had taken a liking to some sort of six legged pokemon. It's back was mostly red with black spots, and as Derpy ran up it initially shrank back. Still, Derpy showed no restraint as he happily grabbed one of the bug's legs and shook it up and down with a friendly smile as he jabbered about in that strange pokemon language. Eventually the other mon's tense posture faded as it smiled back and spoke right on back. Blaine pulled out his dex and pointed it at the strange mon. "Let's see… Ledyba. It is timid and clusters together with others. The fluid secreted by its feet indicates its location."
"Oh? Are you that Croconaw's trainer?"
Blaine put his dex back in his pocket and saw that a young boy, no more than ten, came running over. "Wow, that's one cool mon you have!"
Blaine looked over at Derpy and shrugged, "What can I say? He's special."
The boy chuckled, "He sure is. I've only seen blue ones online. I think he's one of those shiny ones, right?"
Blaine nodded, "I suppose he is."
The boy smiled and patted the Ledyba on the back, "This is my pal Oron. When I get older, I'm going to take him out and we're going to start our own adventures!"
"Ledy!" The Ledyba cried out with a happy nod.
"Well, you do that then." Blaine said, "I'm going to head over to the gym."
"You're going to battle Bugsy?" The kid asked. Derpy eagerly nodded to the question as the lad chuckled, "He's really strong, that's why he's the gym leader here! He uses all sorts of bug type pokemon."
"I see." Blaine nodded, "Thanks for that then. I'll just be off and-"
"Cane we watch?" The kid asked hopefully. "I only get to see gym battles on t.v. and the net. It would be so cool to see one up close!"
Blaine knew the easy answer. Say no, and give any reason really. It was too dangerous, he didn't want any stray attacks to hit the kid, he was busy for time and couldn't show off, he-
"Toto!" As Blaine had been busy thinking Derpy had been quick to answer for him, nodding his head happily.
"Awesome! Well, you already know Oron. I'm Darrel!"
Blaine pointed down to his Croconaw, who puffed out his chest proudly in return, "He's Derpy and I'm Blaine."
The boy giggled a bit at that, "Derpy? That's a funny name."
Derpy gurgled a bit as Blaine chuckled, "Well, he deserved it as a Totodile, that's for sure. So, where's the gym?"
"This way!" Darrel said as he held out his arm and let Oron quickly scuttle up it and onto his back. "It's not far really."
The young kid quickly took off as Blaine rushed to keep up with him. Just like Darrel had said, it wasn't that far away. In fact, the gym was actually a few blocks away. As the two went inside Blaine couldn't help but whistle in amazement. If one didn't consider the walls and the roof up above, then the interior of the gym could easily be confused as belonging outside. There were shrubbery, trees, and strange beams that were laid out over a large pit.
"You have to ride on these!" Darrel said he pointed over to the large Spinarak kart that hung on one of the beams. "The kart does the driving, you just have to press the go button."
"So, use these to get to the end huh?" Blaine asked. There were only three stationed, and the middle one looked like it would head straight to where he needed it to go. He made his way onto the kart and sat down along with Darrel. The glowing green button right on side glowed a bright green. Blaine looked over the edge of the kart and down at the pit below. It was alright, the kart had to be built well enough that it wouldn't just plummet down after all, right? Blaine pressed the button and sucked in a breath as the kart began to squeak as it moved along its route, and although Blaine had been expecting it to simply move forward it instead moved to the left beam.
"It moves left and right?" He couldn't help but ask as the kart moved forward a bit, then quickly moved onto another beam that angled it to the right.
"Yeah. You have to have already taken the ride to figure out where it ends up. Or researched it."
There was a sound thud as the kart finally reached its stop. The ride had taken the group all the way to the right where one teenager stood. The only thing that stood out about the boy was the fact that he wielded a large bug catching net. "Well well, a new challenger approaches!" The teen said. "The name is Mike, and since you ended up landing on this spot, you have to battle me."
"Or I could press this button and go back the way I came without battling." Blaine said.
"Or you could battle, and if you win I'll tell you which kart to take next without you wasting more of your time." Mike said, "You're choice challenger."
Blaine smirked and grabbed a ball off his belt, "Fine. I'll battle then."
Mike likewise readied a pokeball of his own, "Only two mon for this battle. Go ahead Caterpie!" He threw out his ball as a small green insect appeared on the field.
Blaine threw out his own ball as Brutus appeared. "I select Brutus then. And to start off, hit that bug with a Aqua Jet!"
The Smeargle cried out as he began to run and leaped out, his whole body covered with a light layer of water. He slammed into the bug, forcing it to slide back a bit. The Caterpie let out a opposing cry of anger as Mike grinned, "Counter it with a tackle!"
The bug type clenched its body up and quickly ran forth, hitting into Brutus' calf. The Smeargle grunted in pain, but the painter didn't seem that pained by the hit. "Another Aqua Jet!" Blaine commanded, and Brutus eagerly covered itself in water once more and flew forth, slamming into the bug. By this point the Caterpie was starting to huff.
"That' Caterpie is almost down!" Darrel said. "You can do it Brutus!" Oron let out a happy cry as well as he waved his many hands about.
"Caterpie use String Shot!" The Caterpie readied its mouth as web shot out from it. Brutus saw it coming and sidestepped the string as it instead landed upon the floor. "Brutus one more Aqua Jet!"
The Smeargle cried out as his body shimmered from the water and slammed into the bug. Caterpie went flying and fell into a bush with a soft thud. Mike recalled it and then tossed out his last mon, "Give them a sting Weedle! Poison Sting!"
As the ball hit the ground a brown shape with a nasty looking stinger flew out. The momentum propelled it forward as Weedle dug its stinger into Brutus' chest. The Smeargle cried out as the Weedle pulled out and sprang back.
"Brutus, Aqua Jet!"
Brutus cried out suddenly as he fell to a knee. His hands gripped his stomach in pain as Darell gasped, "Looks like Weedle got lucky. Brutus just got poisoned!" Brutus grit his teeth as his body still got covered with water. He flew at the Weedle, slamming into his adversary with fervor. The bug type flew back, but Mike pointed out a finger as he commanded quickly, "String shot!"
As the Weedle flew it suddenly snapped his head down and aimed right at Brutus. Webbing shot out and gripped onto the Smeargle's chest fur. Weedle came flying and stuck to Brutus' chest.
"Brutus, pull off Weedle and let's go with another String Shot!"
Brutus grunted as he tugged the Weedle off and threw him away and onto the ground. The painter slammed into the bug with a smirk. The close contact was enough for Weedle to pierce Brutus' arm with another Poison Sting. Brutus shuddered as the poison circulated through his system, but a good dose of water was all the Weedle needed to finally faint.
Mike recalled his downed mon as he nodded, "So for my tip. Take the far left kart. It'll end up in the middle and there you will battle against another trainer. I also suggest you cure that poison on your Smeargle. You don't want that hampering you in the next fight."
As the kart moved back to the entrance Blaine dug out a antidote and sprayed it onto Brutus' chest, the Smeargle grunting just a bit at the stinging sensation. Darrel meanwhile just was energetic. "That was a cool battle! Brutus was just flinging water everywhere!" Oron likewise let out some high pitched cries.
Blaine recalled Brutus, "I remember my first battle. I wasn't the best at it when I started off, but it's where you have to learn. I was rather scared, but I had Derpy along. I don't know, I guess after a while and after a few battles the initial nerves wear off."
The kart finally stopped and the two hopped onto the left kart. Thankfully, this one seemed to be on the right route and stopped directly in the middle path. Just like with the last kart ride there was a trainer waiting for them there.
"Hey there trainer! Want to get to Bugsy? Well then, you'll have to get past me!" The young girl standing there stated. "If you can get past me, then you'll be all set to go against the bug man himself!"
Blaine nodded and grabbed Brutus' ball once more and unleashed the painter onto the field. The girl threw out a yellow mon that hovered in mid-air. "That's a Beedrill!" Darrel stated. "They have really nasty stingers!"
Brutus gripped his tail with his hands as the Beedrill leered down at him, letting its sharp stinger arms rub against each other. The two mon stared down until finally Blaine called out the first command. "Aqua Jet!"
The other trainer was just as quick to command, "Fury Attack!"
The bug ended up being quicker in the end. As Brutus readied himself for his attack the bug appeared in a flash before his face. Its arm stingers thrust out again and again as the sharp tips slammed into Brutus' chest. The five hits caused Brutus to cry out in pain and he staggered back in agony. The bee chuckled, and even when Brutus struck back with his Aqua Jet the bug still sported a grin on its face.
"Finish it off with another Fury Attack!" The girl cried out, and the Beedrill was eager to comply.
Another three thrusts of its arms and Brutus was out like a light. Blaine recalled the painter as he sent out another mon, this time Legious appeared in a flash of light. Another Fury Attack was called and another three thrusts damaged Legious, but Blaine was already thinking.
"Sand Attack Legious! Don't let that bee get the better of you!"
"Nin!"
The Nincada twisted about and threw some sand up at the bee, his opponent grunted and rubbing at its eyes as the sand stung him. This time, four punishing attacks hit Legious. The bug huffed softly as Blaine went with the same verse, "Okay, another Sand Attack!" The sand seemed to be doing the trick as when the Beedrill swooped down he ended up missing Legious by a fraction. "Some more sand Legious!" As the sand was kicked up the Beedrill powered through his diminishing sight and nailed a hit into the smaller target. Another three thrusts reaped devastation as Legious teetered a bit on the ground.
"Sand Attack! We'll get him blind soon!"
Sand flew and the helpless bee missed once more, letting out an aggravated cry as it rubbed at its eyes. The bee flew again, missing once more and even being gifted with a healthy dose of more sand. Tears leaked from the bug's eyes as the flying mon rubbed furiously at its eyes as best as it could, but another sand attack sealed the deal.
"Now, let's back that health we lost before, Leech Life!"
Legious aimed his mouth up as he shot out a green orb at the hovering mon. The Beedrill cried out as precious energy was sapped into the glowing orb and the orb flew down the Legious. A few cuts began to heal upon the Nincada's carapace, but the Beedrill was still going. He swooped and missed as Legious threw out another Leech Life. Beedrill wavered a bit in mid-air as it buzzed angrily. With every failed attack another Leech Life sucked out the Beedrill's energy until the flying bug was far too weak and collapsed to the ground.
The girl withdrew her bug and Blaine pulled his back as he walked up to the path that led only straight ahead, "So Bugsy is down this way?"
"Yeah, be on your guard. He's no pushover."
Blaine nodded, "We'll see how hard he is then." With that he walked on past the trainer with Darrel following eagerly.
Aberdeen & Morgan
Azalea Town's Gym
It was not difficult to find the gym once they knew that there was one. It was one of the largest and most peculiar buildings on the southern side of the town, near the forest.
"The gym doesn't look very imposing," Aberdeen said with a raised eyebrow when he and Morgan approached it on the street. "Rather, it looks like... A daycare or something? For pokémon. Sorta cuddly. You know what I mean?"
"Sure, if I actually paid attention to all of your babble," Morgan replied. "Hm, but it does look rather.. cozy? Is this the gym?"
"Unless they have put this sign up in the wrong place, it probably is," Ab suggested, patting a wooden sign with his hand, bearing the words 'AZALEA GYM'. "Let's go inside already!"
"Hmph," Morgan huffed as she accompanied the young man inside. "Yes sir, Mr.Leader! Tch."
The inside was not quite as daycare-like. But it was like a greenhouse. A jungle, if you will. There was no entrance hall or reception desk - instead you stepped right in onto a grass covered floor, thick bushes lining the path in front of the trainers like low walls. There were also real, proper trees growing here and there in the big building.
"Now we're talking!" Aberdeen said eagerly. His Quilladin had been put back inside his pokéball, but if he was out he would have shared his trainer's enthusiasm.
"Hm, a grass field? And actual trees..." Morgan observed. Then after a brief chuckle, "The gym leader.. maybe they like steel types?"
Ab looked at her questioningly and was about to say something, but then changed his mind and smiled instead. "Or maybe they're a really hardcore vegetarian?"
I was only joking, but the scary thing is, I'm not sure he is... Morgan can only think. "Really though, I'm guessing either bug types, or grass types, so, I hope you'll be prepared! But honestly, you'll probably flop like a Magikarp. Good luck though!"
Aberdeen shook his head as he plowed forwards through the grass. "Why do you do that?" he asked with a chuckle, without looking back at her.
Morgan blinked once. "Why do I do..what?" she asked.
But before Aberdeen could respond, someone jumped out in front of them. Aberdeen jumped high and nearly stumbled into Morgan.
"You! Were you invited?"
It was a girl with huge glasses and tiny pigtails, glaring at them with arms crossed. She was dressed in laced trousers and a slightly worn buttoned shirt.
"I thought anyone could come into a gym and challenge the leader!" Aberdeen tried.
"So you're not spies then?" the girl asked, emphasizing the 'spies' word.
"No," Morgan replied slightly annoyed. "Do I even look like one to you -- Why would spies even come to a dump like this?"
The girl narrowed her eyes towards Morgan for a second or two, but then eased up drastically. "Nevermind that. So, you are here to challenge Bugsy?" she instead asked with a wide smile.
"... Bugsy?" Aberdeen repeated, unsure if he had heard what he assumed was a name correctly.
"I assume Bugsy is the gym leader, yes?" Morgan guessed. "Then who are you?"
Aberdeen was still snickering at the name when the girl took a step towards them and put her hands on her hips.
"I am a very important person! Crucial to this gym, actually! Without me, there would be no-"
"Lara, are you intimidating challengers again?" came another voice from behind the 'important' girl.
She turned around, flustered, and apologized rapidly. "I was just telling them about the gym, leader!"
"You did not!" Ab interjected, but then saw the person who was walking up to them.
It was a fairly short, lean person with light skin and soft lines on their face. The hair was a shimmering purple, reaching down to the shoulders and framing the face elegantly. The eyes were alert but friendly as they surveyed the two new trainers curiously. The clothes were not really elegant though - they rather reminded Aberdeen of the farmers he had seen on the outskirts of Cherrygrove.
All in all, Aberdeen couldn't help thinking that this leader girl, whatever silly name she might have, was nothing short of hella cute.
"So you're Bugsy," Morgan said, wanting to make sure. "I'm Morgan, and that guy is Aberdeen. What's with this Gym anyway? There are actual trees and grassfields.. are you trying to start a farm or something?"
"Most bug pokémon enjoy the forest life," Bugsy told them as he motioned for them all to follow him further in through the grass and bushes. "I often venture out to Ilex forest and study them in their natural habitat, but over the years some have followed me home and I have even trained some to become strong battlers. And in order to care for them properly, I set my gym up to reflect their natural habitat as well as I could."
"Bug pokémon? Oh, you're specializing in bugs! Haha, I can't wait to see Tina's reaction to this," Aberdeen giggled. "Say, are you scared of bugs, Morgan?"
"Hah, you're talking to a girl who has a poster of a Scyther," Morgan remarked. "I THINK I can enjoy a few bug pokemon. Except for those.. Ariados, ugh."
"Not Ariados?" Bugsy said with his smooth voice. "Pity, I find them very intelligent."
He pointed upwards as he spoke, and of course there was not one but two rather large, red spider pokémon watching them from the branches of the nearest tree, just above their heads as they were walking.
"U-Ugh," Morgan gagged. "I-It was just something that happened when I was younger. A friend of mine decided it'd be a good idea to surprise me with a Ariados crawling all over my body when I slept. When I woke up it was... uuuugh... Of course I punched him on the nose later on, but... soooooo muuuuuch leeeeegs...."
"You've got a point," Aberdeen chuckled. "There are many legs there. But that just makes them fast!"
"Fast and cunning," Bugsy agreed, and Aberdeen felt his cheeks go red from the approval.
Morgan turned to give Aberdeen a hard, yet awkward look. "Say, Aberdeen?"
"Mhm?" Ab responded, snapping out of it.
"Shut up."
"So, you were thinking of challenging me and my bug pokémon battlers?" the leader continued as they turned around a particularly colorful shrubbery and came out into a clearing. A clearing that had the unmistakable white lines of an arena painted on the grass.
"I suppose I'll observe and let this one go ahead of me," Morgan suggested. "I'm curious on how you two will battle, after all this.. bug talk."
"Oh, but ladies first, right?" Aberdeen countered with a wide grin. "If I go first, you might run away from fright before you get the chance to battle yourself!"
"Fiiiiine, I guess I'll be first," Morgan accepted while rolling her eyes. She then turned to Bugsy. "Just say where, and I guess we can start."
"I'll cheer for you!" Ab assured her. Truth was that he just got the idea of watching Morgan battle Bugsy and get a grasp of what kind of tactics he could use in his own battle later. And also... He didn't want to make a fool out of himself in front of this cute gym leader by not being prepared.
Bugsy backed away from them, taking a spot on the other side of the grass field. "Right here," he said calmly. "Three pokémon each is my suggestion. 'No potions' rules. Will that work for you?"
"That'll be fine," said Morgan. "In other words the first one to lose all three of their pokemon will be the loser.. something that I'm familiar with!" She then got out her first pokeball. "I'm ready when you are!"
"You're familiar with being the loser?" Aberdeen asked from behind her with a raised eyebrow.
"Silence in the peanut gallery!" Morgan warned and got a stifled giggle in reply.
"Then let the match begin!" called out Bugsy. His first pokemon.. was set. "I choose one of my favourite pokemon, Butterfree!" Soon Morgan was faced off against a small winged butterfly-like creature; a Butterfree, hovering quickly with its silver wings. "She's pretty cool, huh?"
"Super cool!" Aberdeen commented happily from his spot safely behind Morgan, recalling an attempt of his to capture a similar pokémon a few routes ago...
"I guess, but it's still not like one of MY favourites!" replied Morgan, throwing her pokeball. "Mareep! Give this guy a shocking experience!" Her prized Mareep came right out of her pokeball, as it cried once, and shook her head, removing some of the excess woll that usually appears on her head.
"SUPER cool!" Ab cried again. "It looks almost like Terribolt, my-"
Morgan cut him off. "Now try this! Mareep - use Charge!"
Mareep then relaxed, as it used her wool to start building up elecrical current to be stored. It also seemed as though it had a fun time doing it - she always loved to curl up against televisions or dryers, just to absorb electricity for herself. Of course, not without a scalding from Morgan at times.
"I see! You like to play the passive game, waiting for your chance!" pointed out Bugsy. "Very admirable! But how about this - butterfree, use your Poison Powder!" Butterfree cried in agreement, flapping her wings to release a small toxic cloud that scattered, covering the field, including Morgan's Mareep, with poison spores. Morgan's Mareep started to cough as it was soon taken by the poison.
"Wh-what is this?!" Morgan said in examination. Her Mareep stumbled here and there, as it didn't seem she could regain proper footwork. "Poison...?"
"Yeah, and as long as your pokemon are in the field, it will slowly sap away on its strength. One of the many wonders of Bug pokemon!" declared Bugsy. "Follow up with a Tackle attack, Butterfree!" His pokemon swopped in, as it readied its wings to do a diving tackle charge towards the target.
"Think you're confident enough to hit us with a physical attack?!" Morgan said in a somewhat frustrated tone. "Mareep, counter with a Thundershock attack!" Mareep then used up her stored energy to release a stronger-than-normal electric attack, all thanks to the Charge from eariler. But Bugsy didn't appear to be worried.
"Actually, I was expecting that!" he boasted. "Butterfree - Confusion!" Soon his pokemon lit up its eyes in a tremendous blue light, as it appeared to release telekenetic waves of energy towards the lightning attack, as though it quickly appeared to be taking control of the energy itself. Morgan could only stand bewildered as the Butterfree repelled the Thundershock attack, right back towards Mareep, followed up with a quick Tackle to make it stumble on its belly.
"It.. repelled the attack...?" recapped Morgan. "Even after the charge to make it stronger..."
"You shouldn't underestimate the psychic powers of a Butterfree!" Bugsy explained. "See, back when I was younger, I raised a young Caterpie. My dad always told me that when a Caterpie became cornered, it's true power will sine. That of course, became appearent when it first evolved into a Metapod, and was attacked by a wild flock of Spearow - it evolved into the Butterfree you see before you, and managed to paralyze the swarm with just a flick flutter of its Stun Spore. As for the rest of her powers... well. You'll see soon enough!"
"Still cool," Aberdeen breathed.
"Gh...!" Morgan uttered.
"Butterfree, keep up the pressure with a Gust attack!" he commanded. His Butterfree then scopped back up in it's comfortable flying position, as it again used its wings to release a strong gust of wind, rendering Morgan's Mareep unable to move, let alone stand up.
"K-Keep strong, Mareep!" Morgan encouraged, as she herself was trying to fight the winds. Her Mareep struggled to get back up to its feet, thanks to the strong winds of course, but soon, it had the strength to keep going, and finally back on all fours. "O-Okay, fight back with your Thunder Wave!" Morgan then ordered. Mareep mustered up her strength to release a strong Thunder Wave attack, to push back against the strong Gust of wind.
"Sorry, but we already know what to do!" proclaimmed Bugsy. "Push it back with Confusion!" Butterfree then stopped the strong Gust move to lit up its eyes again, releasing her trademark telekenetic waves to combat Mareep's Thunder Wave. Like before, it proved to be too strong, as the electric move was sent right back.
"Morgan!" Aberdeen shouted, not able to sit still and literally jumping up and down. "He's a gym leader, he's seen every sensible tactics before. You've gotta fight crazily! Be unexpected! Confuse HIM!"
Ugh, I know that Aberdeen, I know! Morgan thought to herself. But between the offensive and defensive traits of that Butterfree of his, how can I counter? Plus he IS smarter than he looks... Morgan stood for a while as her Mareep tried to recover for the electroparalysis. Electric attacks weren't working, so it was definitely time to try something new. At least, that's what she thought.
"Okay, this time we'll move in close. Mareep - Tackle!" she commanded. Mareep cried, as she, along with the best that her short little legs could take her, charged right in towards the enemy.
As it looked like the powder was going to fall, Morgan had an idea. "You're not the only one who can be adaptable!" she shouted in delight. "Mareep, use your Cotton Spore!" Mareep cried once more as she lit up her wool. Some of her woll came out from her body, and soon developed larger, and larger, as the incoming Stun Spore was engulfed by it. But soon, combined with the mixture of the spores, the cotton became too big to Butterfree to avoid, and thus, it bcame covered in a mixture of all sorts of spores, rendering it unable to fly and flap its wings as much as she wanted to.
"Uh--Oh no!" Bugsy cried. "But how did you--"
"You're not the only one who studyed up in science!" Morgan boasted. "No more menuverabilty from your precious Bug! But don't worry, cause Mareep is gonna shock it to hiiiigh heaven! Thundershock attack!" Mareep sent out one more of its electric type attack move, this time shocking the Butterfree in contact, making it a Super-effective hit, thus making the Butterfree drop, and soon, it completely stopped moving.
"N-No way," Bugsy said in disbelief. She's unable to battle! Darn!
"Yes!" Morgan cheered, as she congratuated her victorious Mareep with a couple of pats on her head, and a brief hug. "You did admirably!" she complimented, with Mareep giving a happy cry.
"That's more like it!" Aberdeen cheered too. "Bugsy will never know what hit her!"
At that comment, the gym leader looked in Aberdeen's direction with a strange smile, which made his heart skip a beat. Not really because it was pleasant to have 'her' look at him, but rather because he suddenly became very self-conscious and nervous. But Bugsy left no direkt remark, and instead turned back to the challenger.
"Well done! You're pretty fast to think on your feet!" Bugsy complimented. "However! Let's see you stand up to... Heracross!" He threw his second pokeball in the field releasing a fairly large single-horned stag beetle: a Heracross. It wounded up its horn and cried, preparing for a battle.
I've never faced a Heracross before... Morgan thought. It's a Bug and a Fighting type, if I recall. I'll try to hit it hard and fast! Then, with a change in her direction she shouted, "Mareep! Use your Thundershock!" Mareep charged her thunder energy from her wool and let loose a barage of lightning jolts towards the bettle pokemon.
"Heracross! Use your Horn Attack!" Bugsy ordered. Heracross lowered its horn as it started to charge in head first towards the electric attack. Unfortunately for Mareep, the Thundershock attack proved to be moot as Heracross used its horn to deflect the attack like it didn't even faze it at all. Soon Mareep found herself to be stuck hard and fast itself with Heracross's powerful horn, causing it to lose it's balance and drop. It stopped moving.
"Mareep!" Morgan called out. Mareep only gave a small cry as it couldn't move. It was unable to battle. Morgan got out Mareep's pokeball and returned it safely. "But how...? In just one hit too?!"
"Strong, right?" Bugsy asked. "See, I caught Heracross one day in one of my expeditions. It was sucking the honey out from a nearby tree, happliy enjoying its meal. Course, Heracross are also known to be so powerful that it can send a tree hurdling to the ground like a day in the beach! And, this one is one of my favourite bug pokemon of all!"
"Cool, I want a Heracross too!" Aberdeen mused in the background.
"Alright, fine!" replied an annoyed Morgan. With no time to hesitate, it was time for her next pokemon. "Let see how it stands up to my new pokemon, Dratini!" she released her Dratini that she caught from the Union cave. Her Dratini cried as it swoohed its tail back and forth. Of course, Morgan had little to no practice battling with her Dratini, since she sort of only learned about its moves from the last minute.
"Wrap attack!" she ordered. Dratini slithered its away as fast it could towards the Heracross. Before it could react, Heracross found it's horn wrapped around Dratini. "Now use Thunder Wave!" Morgan quickly planned. Dratini released a sudden static electric pulse that shocked Heracross to its core, rendering it paralyzed. But what was odd was... Bugsy didn't mind it?
"That's what I'd hoped you do," said Bugsy in amusement. Morgan stoo there confused. Why would he intentionally let his pokemon be paralyzed? It was then that she saw it - Heracross's eyes turned a bright red as it soon seemed to have a strange.. red aura. It then managed to shake her Dratini off with its powerful orn with ease, as Dratini could only fall to the ground.
"Use Night Slash!" Bugsy then ordered. Heracross's claws turned a dark black as it quickly slashed Morgan's staggered Dratini with all it's might, Dratini stood little change against it, as it crashed, having it's snake-like body all sprawled out. It stopped moving, indicated it fainted on the spot. Morgan stood in disbelief. Again, one hit? But that move seemed way to powerful. Was there something more to that strength..?
"Seems like you're a tad confused," Bugsy started to say. "As I said before, Heracross is one tough bug, and do you know why? It's also because its a fighting type with a strong fighting spirit. You see, what I've learned from this Heracross is that certain fighting pokemon like it have a remarkable fighting sense, which is directly triggered whenever it's hit with a stats conflicting move, like paralysis. I knew that your Dratini had to have a move like it somewhere, so, all I had to do is wait for my chance. You activated Heracross's fighting power: it's Guts!"
Morgan couldn't even begin to reply, as she returned her Dratini back in its pokeball. Fortuantely for Morgan, all was not lost. She had an ace up her sleeve this whole time, waiting for her chance. And now, the time has finally arrived. "This isn't over yet! You can do this, Combusken!" she then sent out her strongest pokemon - her Combusken. The embers that charred all around it soon flew off as Combusken readied its fighting stance. "You're not the only one who has a pokemon with a fighting spirit!"
Ab only got more and more excited, finally getting to see Morgan's champion. He raised his pokédex to take its readings, but the result made him raise an eyebrow.
"Ah, so you had a fire pokemon after all!" Bugsy pointed out. "Not bad at all! Combusken is actually quite rare around in this region! But still, we've been fighting against Fire pokemon for as long as I can remember; this isn't new to us!"
"My Combusken isn't like the other Fire-type rifraf!" Morgan boasted. "Let's see how you handle this! Combusken's Ember!" Combusken leaped and spewed its trademark fire-type move, showing Bugsy's Heracross with a baragge of Ember swarms. "Too bad your pokemon wasn't fast enough!"
It's true... Bugsy could only think. The paralysis from before hasn't died at all.Only one thing to do. His Heracross slowly recovered. "Aerial Ace attack!" From the order, Heracross used the last of her strength to charge head first with a burst of speed. Of course if this hit, it would have been more of a super-effective hit then Heracross's other moves. Aberdeen stopped his pondering and gasped at the scene on the battlefield.
"Combusken, just hold still!" Morgan then called out. In truth, this was a hidden technique, so to speak, that she and Combusken had been working on ever since Combusken evolved from a Torchic. There was one thing that Morgan noticed upon meeting her new evolved pokemon - how powerful it's strong arms were. Heracross flew in closer and closer, as Combusken stood there, ready. Soon, the time was set... "Now, grab it!" Combusken quickly reacted, as she was able to block the fast attack, grabbing a hold of Heracross's long horn.
"Heracross, get out of there!" Bugsy shouted. But it was too late.
"Now, throw it!" Morgan then ordered,as the strong fire-hen threw the stag-bettle as hard as she could, causing the Heracross to crash on the field nearby. Combusken, following another command from Morgan, used it's fantastic Ember attack to deliver a finishing blow, directly onto the Heracross, causing it to faint.
"Heracross..." Bugsy shrieked as he looked on. Heracross didn't respond, as it simply laid there, unconscious. Bugsy then returned it to its pokeball. "I never thought that your Combusken was on such another level! I mean, your other pokemon were good, but your Combusken is in a whole different league from them all together! I'm quite impressed! But then again... you're not the only one who has a ace up their sleeve!"
Bugsy had just one more pokemon left to send out. And this was it. His eyes seemed more triumphant and as brashful as ever. He had a good feeling about this next battle. "This is it! Scyther!" He threw his pokeball, as it landed on the field. Released was an even larger and more menacing bug pokemon, with seemed to have really large an sharp looking blades... no other pokemon deserved to be called a Scyther. It raised it sickles upon a fighting stance, preparing for battle. It then leered upon Morgan's Combusken, only to have a compensated stare down in return.
"To think that you even had a Scyther too!" said Morgan in the midst of starstruckness. "After this is over, I'm soooo catching one!"
"Yeah! Out of all the bug pokemon out there, I'd say Scyther is my favourite!" Bugsy explained. "See one time ago, I met this Scyther in a forest as it battled against other Scyther, which I guess it was for territory. The amazing thing was that out of 20, or even 30 of them, this Scyther always seemed to rise at the top. I can even tell just by looking at, this Scyther might have been fighting all of his life."
"From all of his life..." Morgan repeated. Meaning this Scyther must of gotten through some very harsh battling and weather conditions. Even so, no matter how strong it was, it had to be taken down. Her Combusken looked back at her. Combusken itself was ready. Morgan nodded in agreement. "Alright then! Combusken! Ember attack!" she called, singalling her Combusken to perform a wide spray of Ember showers.
"Dodge it with Agility!" responded Bugsy. His Scyther ran and leaped out of the way from the danger with such incredible speed. "Now, False Swipe!" His Scyther with his speed then ran towards Combusken, preparing his scikle for a devestating swipe.
"Block it, Combusken!" Morgan quickly ordered. Combusken fortuantely reacted fast enough to block the move from its Scyther foe, with its forearm. "Now that we've got him at a point blank range, quick, use Ember again!" Combusken prepared its attack.
"Dodge with Quick attack!" commanded the bug-gym leader, with Scyther in a short of a blink of an eye, leaped out of Combusken's Fire-move range, as the Scyther then landed in a more favourable position. It then came back with even more force, delivering a strong tackle towards Combusken, causing it to stagger a bit. However, it soon got back up on its feet, retaliating with a strong Peck attack towards the bug pokemon, most likely as a sign of pride, as Scyther itself slowly recovered as well. Combusken and Scyther soon find themselves short on breath. They were both starting to get exhausted.
"We don't have much left to give..." Bugsy explained to his tired Scyther. "So, we're going to have to end this with one more attack. All or nothing!" His Scyther cried in agreement.
"Combusken! You can do it!" Morgan cheered on to her pokemon. "Let's not hold back this time!" Combusken nodded and cried to agree.
"Focus Energy!" they both ordered. Scyther and Combusken both stood on, closing their eyes. as it seemed that they were getting themselves pumped up and ready for their next move. They both were soon ready.
"Scyther, use your Quick Attack!" Bugsy then ordered. His pokemon readied itself as it soon quickly used its wings to bring its body to deliver a strong tackle towards the fire pokemon.
Bugsy... you're not the only one who has a past with their pokemon! Morgan stood in thought. I had Combusken ever since she was a Torchic, as while we always had our tough times during our travels, she was the first one who taught me what it meant.. what it meant to have a Pokemon.. a true friend. Morgan lit up her eyes. "Combusken, use your Double Kick!" Combusken cried as she leaped in the air, did a backflip, and readied its powerful legs to deliver a barage of kicks.
The two pokemon were coming closer and closer to each other, as they both soon collided as fast as the eye can see. The two pokemon then landed on the ground, as they simply stood there, backs towards each other. Morgan and Bugsy stood there in silence as the two pokemon waited... and waited. And then, it was all over. Scyther fell down on its belly, as it was unable to move, leaving Combusken as the winner.
"It can't be!" Bugsy said as he looked on. "Scyther... lost...? Aw man..."
"Morgan then ran up to congratulate her pokemon with a successful hug. "I knew you wouldn't let me down babe..." she whispered to her pokemon. Her Combusken cried in happiness, taking in her affection. It was then that Bugsy came up to pat his own pokemon on the head.
"Well done, my friend," Bugsy said in a compliment. His Scyther wasn't too used to losing, but, his pride fortuantely can make him accept the loss, as long as it was to a worthy opponent. Bugsy then returned it to its pokeball, and approached the victorious Morgan.
"It looks like my research isn't complete just yet," he said. "You're an expert on pokemon indeed! Congratulations, you win! This is the Gym's prized posession... the Hive Badge!" He then got out a badge that looked just like a small ladybug. It was unique to a bug-type gym alright, but, Morgan happliy accepted it.
"Thank you very much for this! Uh, I'm not going to have to say something dorky like.. I JUST GOT... THE HIVE BADGE! or something like that, right?" Morgan could only ask.
"Not if you don't want to!" Ab assured her, coming up to put an encouraging hand on her shoulder. "That was amazing. You really are a battler, Morgan. I thought Heracross had you for a while there!"
"Yeah, well, I haven't even seen one before let alone battle one," Morgan replied with a small blush. "But.. thanks. I guess."
"By the way, before I forget," Ab added, pulling up his pokédex again. It was currently showing a picture of a regular Combusken. "I was wondering... Is your pokémon shiny too? You know, like Chocolate is."
Morgan blinked. "What the heck is a 'Shiny pokémon?" she asked. "Well granted my Combusken's fur IS shiny, thank you very much, I combed it and washed it each day..."
"No, no I mean, it's color is shiny. Different! Look," Aberdeen explained and let Chocolate out of its pokéball. The brown Quilladin smiled happily at them, and Aberdeen made the pokédex scan him instead. A green pokémon showed up on the screen, not a brown one. "Your Combusken has sort of different colors as well, I'm sure! Are you on Pine's mission too?"
"Oh, you mean that old bat," she hissed as she crossed her arms. "I said I was THINKING about it. As in, if I don't have anything else to do. Trust me, I'm a person that tends to have more important things to do. But whatever, there's nothing to think about, really. Combusken is only Combusken. My Combusken."
"Haha, of course. And Chocolate is Chocolate! But that's cool, I meet more and more Pine trainers on this journey. It's cool!"
"Wait a minute," Bugsy suddenly said, having listened in. "Are these pokémon given to you by professor Pine?"
"They were, yeah," Aberdeen nodded. "Only Chocolate. The other pokémon on my team, I've captured myself! And, well, they are not shiny."
"Yeah, don't wet your pants over it," Morgan suggested. "I've met a few others who gotten their pokemon from that old bat too. Apparently though, those idiots can't find theirs at the moment."
At that, Aberdeen just opened and closed his mouth and gave Morgan a betrayed glare. "We didn't just lose them. Some think they got kidnapped. There's nothing funny about that."
"Your pokémon were kidnapped?" Bugsy asked.
"Maybe," Aberdeen sighed, his earlier bright mood now ruined as he thought of his Whismur.
Bugsy looked from one to the other and seemed to be thinking hard. "If Pine trusts you, so will I," he finally said. "Listen... You are not the first trainers to have told me that their pokémon were stolen. Somewhere between Azalea and Violet, right? I think I know who did it."
Aberdeen's eyes grew wide. "What? Who?!"
"I can't tell you here," Bugsy said, even glancing around the battlefield as if worried that someone was already listening in. "But I could really use your help. I can't promise anything, but there might be a way for you to see your pokémon again, if you help me. So, if you feel daring and believe that your pokémon friends are worth much to you, please meet me... behind the pokémon center at midnight."
"Whoa," Aberdeen said, not sure that he understood what was going on all of a sudden.
"B-Bugsy..." Morgan said quietly. "What's the meaning of--"
"Did you steal our pokémon?" Ab shot out.
But Bugsy only looked surprised. "No, certainly not! But there are things going on in Azalea... All over Johto as a matter of fact. Like I said, I can't explain it here. But please bring your pokémon team and meet me tonight. And..." He seemed to hesitate for a moment. "Feel free to tell any other Pine trainer you might meet to do the same."
Aberdeen threw an unsure glance at Morgan. Morgan shot a glance right back.
"...Alright then," Morgan agreed. "If it means getting the tweps back their pokemon, I guess I'll cooperate."
"Me too!" Aberdeen agreed. "Count on us, Bugsy."
The gym leader gave them a relieved smile. "Thank you. Now, I have some people I should talk to... See you at midnight. And Morgan," he added towards the girl. "Great battle, again!"
He disappeared into the foliage and Aberdeen let out a breath. "That was odd," he said. "But I knew you had the heart in the right place!" he added towards the girl. "I wonder what it's all about, really."
Morgan didn't reply, but simply crossed her arms and looked up at the celing above. Just what is going on in this region...?
They made their way out from the gym in quiet contemplation, and it wasn't until they were outside the front doors that Aberdeen facepalmed himself.
"I forgot to challenge him to a gym battle myself!" he exclaimed.
"Yeah, well, right now it's better that you didn't," Morgan pointed out. "But you'll see him later on, don't worry. You should ask your friends to join us too. I know someone named Blaine, so, if I see him, I'll spread the word too."
"Okay," Aberdeen sighed, but then shaped up. "Yeah, we should let the others know. But first... Aren't you getting hungry? How about lunch!"
"ME, eat with YOU?" Morgan took in. "I think I lost my appetite."
