  • ChrisTom here. I have recently seen alot of threads asking people why they like the second Generation so much (Pokemon Gold, Silver, and Crystal). Well I had an idea. Let's make them stop asking. I want all fans of the old games to list 10 reasons why they loved G/S/C. It only takes a minute. And my goal is to reach 1000 posts on this thread. Ten there will be 10,000 reasons why, 10,000 memories, and 1000 people who love the games.

The rules of this thread are as followed:
    Spoiler:

Now let us begin the journey of 10,000 reasons with a single 1.

    1. Because one of my first friends was a Cyndaquil.

    2. Because I once wished to live in Azalea Town.

    3. Because grinding was fun to do.

    4. Because the layout of the map was perfect.

    5. Because I could always count on adventure when I went into Ruins of Alph.

    6. Because Larvitar and I loved listening to the music on Route 42.

    7. Because Surfing isn't Surfing unless you have the 8-bit theme.

    8. Because Bell Tower made me feel mystified and scared at the same time.

    9. Because Cloning things was considered Kosher.

    10. Because it is one of the things that makes me... me.

Thank you all for participating in this collaborative project. I can't wait to hear what you have to say.

  • Normally I'd consider this something to be in the Memories thread, but I quite like this idea. I hope it doesn't get cluttered with crap though, haha.

    1. Umbreon, Quilava, and Smeargle - still my top three favorite Pokemon today.

    2. Pokemon Stadium 2 (it's generation II, sooo...it counts?) taught me how to battle after my Yellow fiasco.

    3. Silver is my favorite color and game.

    4. I played Silver at a rough time in my life, so I'm glad it was something that wasn't leaving me.

    5. Because Crystal animations are ballin'.

    6. Muuuuuusic~!

    7. Red Gyarados! (Even though I messed up my first time through and killed it, lol)

    8. Getting lost in Tin Tower and Whirl Islands...okay, not a fond memory, but even still.

    9. Beating up more gym leaders.

    10. Beating Red made you feel like you were on top of the world.

    1) I got crystal early which made it awesomer than it was
    2) New pokemon from y/r/b made it seem..revolutionary
    3) SUICUNEEEE
    4) New lands to discover
    5) We get the new heartbreaking decision - Cyndaquil, totadile or chikorita?
    6) ..I'd finished yellow and red multiple times
    7) The amount of people that played it was phenominal for a handheld game at the time (All came from r/y/b or straight to c/g/s
    8) THE SNORLAX WAS GONE. DAMN ROAD BLOCKING FAT SH-
    9) A new world..to explore (dundundudnudndundund)
    10) Gave me something to do at night. (...I was young)

  • I've got a couple...

    Because...

    1. The Snubble sprite was the most hilarious thing I've seen on a game.

    2. Hatching eggs then was never dull.

    3. I caught my first Lv.100.

    4. I once wanter to live in Ecruteak, just to find Ho-Oh.

    5. The nostalgia from visiting Kanto was ridiculous.

    6. SproutTower was the most ridiculous idea for a tower that has ever been created, just because it was based on a BellSprout.

    7. Spam catching Pikachu in Viridian Forest then calling them all "Dave" is the single most confusing waste of Pokeballs ever created.

    8. Because grinding wasn't dull at all.

    9. It took me over three years to figure out how to get past the sleeping Snorlax, which was strangly enjoyable.

    10. It was the game that made me play the rest...

    Buh bye!

  • 1. First Pokémon game I played after watching some of the Anime.
    2. Johto became my Favorite region to explore.
    3. Lugia caught my attention more than Ho-Oh.
    4. Cyndaquil became my favorite Starter after completing the Game twice with Meganium & Feraligtr.
    5. Made me buy Gold, Crystal, Yellow, Sapphire, Ruby, Fire Red, Emerald, Diamond, Pearl, Platinum & Heart Gold after having so much fun playing it over and over again.
    6. Hatching Shinies with a Ditto was a hell of a lot of fun.
    7. Caught my First 3 Shinies there, Gyarados,
    Electrode & Lugia.
    8. The Cloning Glitch motivated to clone my Friend's PKMN and pass 'em over to my game without them knowing.
    9. Made me laugh @ Tailless slowpokes.
    10. Made me cry when it's Internal Battery dried up.

Also, I suggest adding these reasons to a list in the first post since no-one would go through 500+ pages to read them all.

    1. I grew up with them, now they're a part of who I am.

    2. A lot of good times were had with my friends and I.

    3. Completing the PokeDex was actually possible.

    4. The original designs are much superior to the newer ones.

    5. I always like I was a part of the game, now I feel like I'm running through hoops for a Professor and his sidekick.

    6. The rivals personalities made me want to try to "impress" them.

    7. Every Pokemon was catch-able as long as you bought the games. No need to go out of your way for event exclusives.

    8. The BEST glitches allowed for additional fun after the story (I was always jealous of my friend's Mew...).

    9. The introduction of so many new things in Gold/Silver made the series feel fresh.

    10. Team building demanded more thought/skill and less luck.

    PLUS TWO!

    11. I loved Mystery Gift from Generation II. Meeting with friends just to get these :
    Spoiler:

12: Limited bag space made the games that much more challenging.

    6. MooMoo milk.
    7. The Pokemon <3333333333
    8. Ho-Oh's tower being one of my childhood memories.
    9. The fact that I always imagined there was more to the games, and often dreamed of worlds within the games if they were in real life and God, it was amaaaazing.
    10. Olivine City/Cianwood/...every other city, well, Blackthorne for memories, too...and...yeah damn NOT ENOUGH REASONS ;_____________;

    5. You didn't had to go through Silph annoying Co.
    6. You can clone? I'll have 6 Typhlosion's then :D

  • 2. No EV / Nature or other hyper competitive crud.
I'm sorry, but there have been EVs since forever. As have IVs. Only natures came in Gen III, actually, and their effect is much less than EVs or IVs.
    7. Shinies weren't just eyecandy.
Yes they were. This also conflicts with what you said before. Without "hyper competitive crud" every single Pokemon's stats would be identical, meaning shinies would mean nothing, at ALL. Now, I believe shinies had different IVs, but that doesn't change the fact that these IVs were nothing special and they were still just there for eyecandy.

    1. Red Gyarados, best shiny in history, at 100% rate.
    2. Silver.
    3. The main game was nice and easy.
    4. Goldenrod City's music.
    5. Azalea Town's music.
    6. All the music.
    7. Typhlosion.
    8. Dark types.
    9. Gold in PokeSpe is the best character in history.
    10. Cloning.

    5. Its amazing music (Ice Path, Crystals Battle Tower, Goldenrod...)
    6. The ability to be a girl (Crystal)
    7. The amazing rival known as Silver. :D

    1. Typhlosion, Feraligatr, Noctowl, Espeon, Xatu, Crobat, Ampharos, Quagsire, Heracross, Scizor, Steelix, Qwilfish, Smeargle, Sneasel, Houndoom, Tyranitar, Raikou, Suicune, Entei, Ho-Oh, Lugia are among the greates Pokes ever created IMHO.

    2. Amazing music.

    3. Two Regions. (People say Kanto was bland but I still enjoyed it.)

    4. Pokemon Animations. (And they were much better than what they are today.)

    5. Kris.

    6. Pokegear.

    7. Getting to battle a character who you had come to identify as yourself.

    8. Day/Night.

    9. Silver is the best rival, tied with Blue/Green.

    10. The areas were beautiful. (I know it's hard to see by how outdated the graphics are, but back then I found the areas to be nothing short of stunning.)

    1) "So you want the water Pokemon Totodile?"
    1) "The Egg hatched?"
    2) "I'm waiting for Pokemon who only appear at night"
    3) "Wow you're good at battling, could I get your phone number?"
    4) "I make balls from apricorns"
    5) "Pokemon appeared in the ruins?"
    6) "A red Gyarados appeared in the lake?"
    7) "My names ???"
    8) "You've just taken your first step into Kanto"
    9) "Giovanni, are you listening?"
    10) "..."

  • 1. ZOMG! IT'S IN COLOR!
    2. First time I chose a water starter... I still have that Feraligatr
    3. Insanely catchy soundtrack. Worse then the Romper Stomper one, getting-into-your head wise
    4. "Oh my God! Pokemon hatch from Eggs!" ... way to be a scientist Professor Elm.
    5. Your rival was actually evil, not your neighbor, BFF, or ridiculously competitive loser
    6. In Crystal, stuff moved! (Way to fail, Gen III)
    7. You could finally catch multiple Lapras. And no Missingno to mess up my game!
    8. Could finally breed Pokemon. And clone them easier.
    9. Team Rocket finally revealed themselves to be really, really pathetic.
    10. Aprikorn! Anyone ever use those things, by the way?
