No. Based them off Tamagotchis. Started off as this originally:

Apparently designed Digimon as a "more masculine" Tamagotchi. (Was created by the same company, for the record.)

gonna put my tinfoil hat on to say that the only reason pokemon and digimon are compared so often because they both have creatures and have 'mon' at the end of their names
