Hmm... I'd guess 7 too because 7 is a nice number and one of those "spiritual" or whatever you call it~

depends on the umbreon and its gender.

yeah it's should be depend on umbreon, what i mean is how many thing (averagely) for any umbreon...

well at least for the rings in head i think it's all same for umbreon, 3 (2 in ears, 1 above eyes)

It has 8 rings, and the only reason I can think of it having less is some sort of disfigurement during the evolution process.
gender isn't relevant, either, that was a joke hopefully no one picked up on.

Each ring serves a different purpose; anyway, I look at umbreon as a very 'well balanced' pokemon. I just couldn't imagine it missing a ring on one leg, or having one ring on its ear.
 
well the only pokemon sprite that is different between same species is only spinda, does that mean other pokemon have same pattern (same ring location, same number of ring etc)

It's sure weird just having one ring on ears, but how about the one missing is the one on it's tail? It's tail would be plain black......o_o

Lets find one and confirm that. xD

I would suppose it has them sorta evenly spread out through its body. Otherwise, it'd look weird with rings in one place and missing in another sorta.
 
Actuallly 8 would be correct...

1 on each ear, 1 on head, 1 on tail and 1 on the flank of each leg...

The ears... they all have pointy ears xD but Umby and Eevee's are the most pointy.

And i was gonna to say the same... I looked my siggy before read your post and i think the most similiar part is it's ears
