"It took a few hours, but Strausen was back at the Fort Dix central base. Out of armor, at his desk, and completely bored. He hadn't even seen much action at Rutgers as it was, and drives through the green zone were always uneventful.

Templar Aimard should be en route. He'd received rather disturbing news from one of the ground-mounted sensors outside of Rutgers perimeter. A strain of the vampiric virus had been detected leaving the premises at the same time as the mercenary band. That was problematic, no matter when, but this time it was worse. It matched the same slightly altered strain of that which had been found in District 12.

Of course, Rutgers had an incursion, and to have traces of the virus would make sense. Normally he'd just put a track on it, but this signature had to have come from outside the facility. Nothing similar was found going in, yet it came out. You can't make something out of nothing, especially when that something had been found in an area that resulted in 100% civilian fatalities.

Strausen was assigned to stamp out any vampiric incursions, but this wasn't a normal infection. The mercenary convoy was carrying a man who was either knowingly carrying the virus and only recently manifested it, or worse: someone who could mask the presence of the virus.

He had to keep this quiet. If word got out that a new strain of the virus was loose in the supposedly clean area, there could be problems from from the people who weren't even infected. Sometimes the living were more dangerous than the walking dead."
