    [PokeCommunity.com] 12/26 - COTD - Gengar (Fossil)

    Rate & Review.

Thanks to Water Pokemon Master from www.pokebeach.com for the scan.

LOL this card is a joke... 80 HP on a stage 2 without free retreat (no weakness doesn't help due to its low HP), plus a very energy inefficient attack... PPP for 30 + 10 is semi-fine on a basic, but definitely not on a stage 2 - I mean, 30 damage is too weak to use as a main force, and 10 is too useless as a bench hitter! (FYI, HP Regirock's Rock Slide does 40 + 10 x 2 for FFC.)

It's power isn't that good at all considering you CANNOT move damage counters ACROSS like you can with Shady Move (Banette ex, Typhlosion DF).

    4/10 - pretty sh!tty even for a retro card!

You are, of course, once again judging this card by current standards rather than the ones that were in play when it was created. I think I've said this already, but that's no way of giving an accurate rate. This card was printed before the pokémon Banette had even been invented. :O What is it with you always giving bad rates, anyway, do you get a kick out of it or something? -.-

As for the card itself...well, I agree that it doesn't have much in the way of field presence (Since it's completely walled by all Psychic resistants which, in the original cards, meant virtually every normal type out there) and that exact attack can also be found on Hypno, where it's more useful. Curse isn't too bad, though (Although it sucks that you can only use it once per turn) as it can let you pummel vulnerable targets on your opponent's bench and can be used without keeping Gengar active. Meh, even getting Gengar in play isn't actually that hard since the fossil Ghastly and the Haunter with Transparency (Not sure which set that was from o.O) are actually very good cards in their own right. 6/10, it's a decent benchwarmer and can hurt psychic and fighting type pokes but it's not really all that glorious when active. It's also shamelessly dwarfed by good ol' Zam, which is a pity imo.

There are some VERY OVERPOWERED cards in the base sets too, don't forget...

Like the Ninetales - 80 HP stage 1 that does 80 for only 4R and 1 discard = WTF in today's standards (that'll be made into an ex today)! Save those free retreat basics, Sneasel, and such hax cards...

lol I agree with the Alter Ego dude - Solarys, you seem to be giving pretty biased ratings especially since you compare the card against specific examples as opposed to the whole format or the standards when the card was released.
Also theres really no need to swear about it.. Even if you do use a '!' instead of an 'i'

Anyway back to the card :\

    Gengar Fossil:
Evolves from Haunter. Usually being a Stage 2 isn't the greatest things, but the range of decent preevos are quite a bonus for this card. The Base versions of Gastly and Haunter are both atrocious. But the Fossil/LC versions are quite good choices (Rare Candy is the better option eitherway) since most other versions have a killing [D] weakness.
Yes 80HP is very low for a stage 2. But its a Gengar, not a tank. No retreat cost is great as is the opponent frustrating [F] resistance and the tiny retreat cost.

There was a lot of hype about this card as it has the potential of being able to KO 3 opponents in one turn. (2 by Dark Mind, 1 from Curse). But this is a bit difficult to achieve.

Curse: a very good power (similar to an opponents Damage Swap) but can also act as a pluspower for some easy KOs. This is also cumulative as well as working from the bench for some easy damage throwing. Its EXP version has a similar power that is errated for crossing damage counters over which may upset this card.

Dark Mind: A great fun attack, perfect for taking out benched Baby pokemon as well for free prizes. Unfortunately it is for 3 [P] meaning ER all the way and making this card quite slow. Against a [P] Resistant card you've been pwnt - but usually a Tyrouge could help against this (unless it's Sneasel = GG!)

This card can be either frustrating for your opponent , but the low attack damage, high cost and stage 2 means that its more likely going to set you back. I'd rather use Dark Gengar, but with most having a [D] weakness, its quite a tricky card to play nowadays.

    5/10
