I like collecting first gen cards, but I like playing with the later gen cards because they add so much depth and complexity to the game, while still maintaining the simplicity that let's kids learn to play and enjoy it so easily.
My favorite first gen card is Rocket's Mewtwo, though, followed by the Base Set Alakazam.

Yeah i know what you mean, maybe its just because i grew up with these cards im not sure, the new ones seem almost fake, its what fakes used to look like when the 1st/2nd gen ones were out. I stumbled accross my pokemon cards in the loft yesterday (they must have been up there for about 5 years!) didnt realise how many holo's i still had, i got rid of most of my cards still got -

That's a fair few holos and rares from the early sets that you've got there. I think that's more than I've got from the early sets.

Just bought my first pokemon cards in years! Got a hstriumphant box and call of legends box! Took me a while to find somewhere that still sold them!
