    Pokeballs. Arguably one of the most confusing items in the game, scientifically speaking. Many deep questions swirl about the physical and philosophical workings of the Pokeball. How do they work? Where do the Pokemon go? What is actually inside a Pokeball? Which one is your favorite?

    How about you? Do you have any theories on the workings of the Poke ball as it appears in the Games? Or would you rather share which ones your favorites are?
     
    I guess the most scientific answer is that Pokemon are transformed into data when they enter Pokeballs, I mean that would be near impossible to actually recreate but it's the best explanation for how Pokemon are able to returned and held in a Pokeball.

    But I like to think it's something like this.

    I personally just thought of it as Pokémon being beings of energy (hence them blowing fire power and what not everywhere) and the Pokéball captures/contains their energy or just converts them into energy it can store it under.

    I'm not sure if the creators of Pokémon could come up with a scientific reasoning about Pokéballs, they were probably just like "yay you capture these with these! boom! done! great idea!" lol
     
    I've always perceived it as a kind of laser field that bounces around the interior of the Pokeball, as that's how it's pictured on the inside, but general energy fields work as well :p Also, though, the color that the particle field disperses into is red, the classic color of lasers.
     
    Meh. It's not like anything else in Pokémon is intended or required to make any sense, from a scientific viewpoint, so searching for an explanation to the Poké Balls magical shrink rays/energy converter is no less futile than asking why Pikachu has lightning powers or why Exeggutor is now a Dragon-type.

    Having never seen the anime, I haven't really observed any evidence of how they work.

    It may be just as futile as analyzing magic in Harry Potter for its effects on Conservation of Energy, but it gets brain cells dancing, and it's pretty fun to think about, to boot.

    I thought it was Master Balls that are the big dirty humour ones, though?
    I never look for these things, but I always find them...

    I agree about the Luxury balls' appearances, but when I want function, I choose Quick Balls/Dusk Balls; I always seem to be playing at night, so Dusk Balls are very good, and it never hurts to throw a quick Quick Ball as soon as a battle begins.
     
    I've been kind of obsessed with Pokeballs lately, with breeding and all. I'm trying to get a shiny Pokemon in a matching Pokeball for almost all of them. I really like Dive Balls, probably because they're blue, but Luxury Balls are also pretty nice :) I think my favorite Kurt ball though is the Love Ball, or Moon. :)
     
    Do pokeballs have any effect on breeding now? Or rather, how are pokeballs affected by breeding? I'm stuck back in Gen III, Gen V at the latest :p
     
    I personally adapt the data-matter conversation theory similar to what ScoSap mentioned. And then of course, in order for it to make sense (not necessarily making realistic sense in terms of Real-Life science logic, but at least making logical sense with consistent fantasy science), the Pokemon World shall then requires super high-tech electronic technology. This is not anything far-fetched at all if looking at not only the Pokemon Storage System, but also the Item Storage System and Pokemon Healing Machine in Pokemon Center, and especially the existence of Porygon family.

    Generally people think Pokemon is of the genre of fantasy, but do not forget, the technology level setting of Pokemon World is more of the sci-fi genre, so it is just more reasonable to think of technology related issue with sci-fi mindset using imaginary science.
