Hey guys! Do you remember moment after you sip a cold soft drink or a bite of ice cream, those seconds filled with the kind blissful and torturous headache that's enough to make you squeeze your eyes shut and reach for your temples. That's brain freeze or sphenopalatine ganglioneuralgia( next time say later one )xD
Here is what science says ....
So now you know what's the reason you feel that way c: Do any of you guys experienced a brain freeze or tried to know about it? Share your thoughts c:
Here is what science says ....
when a part of the body gets cold, blood vessels constrict (or tighten) to conserve the heat in the warm circulating blood. This occurs when you apply ice to an area for a whileand the skin turns pale. Conversely, when your body gets too hot, blood vessels dilate (or get wider) so that more heat from the blood is released through the skin. This is why people's skin looks redder when they exercise…independent of whether they use a spray-on tan.
Now when you take a bite of ice cream.... the blood vessels near the back of your throat first rapidly constrict from the coldness and then dilate whenthe blood vessels become warmer again. The dilating blood vessels then pull the tissues around the vessels and the brain such as the meninges, triggering the trigeminal nerve (otherwise known as the fifth nerve), which innervates much of your face, including your forehead. Nerves can't alwaysdistinguish the location of the original trigger, a phenomenon called "referred pain." Referred pain is why people may feel pain on the shoulders or back when the cause of the pain is at the heart (e.g., angina or a heart attack). It is also the reason why you feel the sphenopalatine ganglioneuralgia in your forehead and not the back of your throat. Neuralgia is another word for nerve pain. Ganglion is a collection of nerves. Sphenopalatine describes the location of the ganglion.
