So what's your opinion of the lack of fishing in Black And White? Unova doesn't lack fishing areas, and the only rod (which is the super rod) can only be obtained after the main game is completed.

So what's your opinion, and why do you think they excluded fishing from the main part of the game?

edit: I'm adding some food for thought to the question. So few water pokemon are able to be obtained BEFORE getting surf (which is obtainable only after defeating the 6th gym!)

I was totally fine with the idea of only one rod BUT I didn't like the idea that it was found post-game. It would've made the games a little easier if we could catch water Pokemon earlier on in the games because Surf was found more towards the middle of the games which was annoying. :( I mean even with not many water Pokemon there still should've been something!

Only reason I could think of as to why they didn't was because of lack of Pokemon but... still.

I agree with that post Nica, I was a little let down by this but I think what they were trying to do was because there was less Water Pokemon in Unova they wanted to wait until later in the game before you get the good Water Pokemon.

But hey, at least we still get Panpour and Tympole early on for those who didn't choose Oshawott as their starter.

Surf being obtained after the 6th badge was a little too late for my liking but maybe the reason the Super Rod was not obtained until the post-game was presumably due to the lack of fish-based Pokemon in Unova.

I mean, we only have Alomomola, Basculin, Stunfisk and the Frillish line. Not that many fish there isn't there?

Obviously we're not ready to become fishermen until we've challenged the E4!! They put us to the test.

No but really, I'm with the above two posts. Why make us wait? Even though there's a lack of water Pokémon obtainable, I don't see the major difference there would have been to at least give us the item early on and not way later on. I guess I didn't really mind seeing as I don't fish often in the games (except in RSE, gotta get dem Feebas), but I'm just saying it wasn't really necessary to make us wait so long.

If GameFreak were really into the Unova = New York theme, then I suppose you could add onto the fact that Unova's a city-based region, and fishing would be a rare activity, so.

Unless you choose the water starter, there are not a lot of good Surf candidates. I managed to find a good HM slave in my now Lv.61 Swanna (and climbing); it knows both Surf and Fly. In the right situations, I bring it into battle for a quick blow with those moves (it knows Hurricane now, too).

Per the TP, yes, I wish fishing came about earlier. However, with water spots being lacking in the earlier Routes, it clearly made more sense to put all the water Pokémon there in the post-E4 period to catch and train as needed. Seems you can join a fisherman's club, too. Anyone know what you get for spending a thousand bucks on a Repeat Ball to re-catch something you already have to show him gets you? My already-caught Luvdisc was not sufficient for him and I wasn't about to interrupt my training further.

You get 5 dive balls, according to Bulbapedia.
I suppose I could have looked that up...

And meh, I don't have anything to worry about then. I already bought 8 of the things.

I just go and get Tirtouga, works like a charm.

I didn't mind the lack of fishing pre-E4; I guess they did it because there aren't too many Unva underwater Pokemon to catch. In my opinion, there are some pretty good alternatives for the Water-type slot. My first Water-type was Panpour, whom I quickly replaced with Tympole. I currently have both Seismitoad (evolved from Tympole) and Carracosta in my team, I like both of them a lot.

I was sort of dismayed with fishing being left-out, let alone with only one rod. I wanted to have a water type and now the means is gone. But as the above poster said, there weren't much underwater Pokemon to begin with.
