...I thought I was going to be the first to post in this chapter, but I guess two posts came in just as I was typing this one up, hence why this post doesn't exactly go with the other two. Oh well...

As Lupin approached the dock, he got a good look at each of the other apprentices here. Falkner's apprentice seemed very determined to stop Team Rocket, though a little bit on the aggressive side. Bugsy's apprentice had a similar determination, though he seemed more on the quiet side. In fact, he almost seemed trustworthy to Lupin, though that could not be certain. Whitney's apprentice looked rather goofy, with a magician's hat and abnormally long legs. As Lupin got a closer look, he saw that this apprentice was actually wearing extremely tall shoes.
Pathetic, Lupin thought. He's not even that short to begin with. I think if he takes those shoes off he'd still be a bit taller than Merlin.
Chuck's apprentice was easy to identify--he was the macho guy who looked like he enjoyed spending time at the gym. In fact, he reminded Lupin of an ex-boyfriend Yamiko had... Jasmine's apprentice was a girl about his height, another quiet-type so it seemed. Pryce's apprentice was a young teenage boy wearing baggy clothes. Lupin walked rather closely behind him at first, keeping an eye on his left back pocket... but then he figured that it was unwise to steal from an ally. Clair's apprentice was another young teenage boy, though he looked to be more amiable and confident than the other, just like a rightful Dragon-type trainer. And finally there was Flannery's apprentice. At first glance, this girl seemed to have Yamiko's figure and Lupin's hair, but when she turned around she looked very obviously doll-like. She looked to be energetic in nature, and Lupin began to worry about her membership in Team Rocket.
Walking past and ignoring Helena for the moment, Lupin made it to the dock. There, a man stood next to a small tent, underneath which was a pile of luggage. As Lupin approached, this man fumbled through this pile of bags and suitcases, handing one suitcase to Lupin as he boarded.
"As requested, here is your baggage," he said as he did so.
The suitcase was a small one, much like a large briefcase, but Lupin still made it a priority to take it into his room. Looking around, he noted the elegance of the ferry--in fact, instead of calling it a ferry, he could very well have called it a cruise ship. Although he was instructed to go to the third floor so that the usher could show him to his room, as he boarded this ferry he noticed that there were several floors in the main cabin, and there was lots of space on the main deck. Through the windows of other floors, Lupin could see some sailors talking and having a good time. Most of the people on board already were the working crew of this ship, or the various hosts attending to the apprentices' needs.
This ferry seems rather upscale, doesn't it? Lupin thought as he proceeded on board. The people behind this sure make strange offers. An absurd amount of money, for one thing; a trip on a ferry like this, for another... Surely this can't be all it seems to be. Why would Elm, Lance, or this Mr. Pokemon trust us easily enough so as to treat us like this? Of course, it could be a bribe, it could be motivation--which makes sense, since many of these other apprentices realise the danger of this mission. Perhaps it's just suspicious to me because I'm used to such dangers. I don't even regard this mission as being particularly "dangerous"--the only "danger" I see is in being caught, an action that results from an error in secrecy. But if these other apprentices can't be convincing Rockets, that's their problem. No matter--if in the end I must take on this mission by myself, so it shall be.
As soon as Lupin got upstairs, a group of people came out to greet the apprentices and show them to their rooms. Before too long, a lady in a blue suit came up to Lupin, hand extended.
"Good afternoon Mr. Tasselbury," she greeted as they shook hands. "Please allow me to show you to your room."
The room was nothing particularly special--just a small room with a bed, a nightstand, and a ceiling fan. Immediately Lupin propped his suitase against the wall, and started to unbutton his coat...
"By the way," the attendant mentioned, "lunch will be served in half an hour."
At that point, there came an announement over the intercom...
"Good afternoon, passengers. Due to the weight capacity being a bit larger than we expected, this trip will be delayed one hour, resulting in a duration of seven hours total. We are due at our destination at approximately eight o'clock tonight. Within the next few minutes, our beverage service will begin in the dining hall in the main cabin, and lunch will be served at two o'clock. Our crew, your captain, and Mr. Pokemon, who has offered this gracious service to you, wish you ease on your journey."
A seven hour trip... perfect. This meant that Lupin would have enough time to get a decent day's sleep. Once the attendant left the room, he turned off the lights and closed the drapes on the little window, leaving the room in a darkness similar to nighttime. Pleased with this, Lupin took off his coat, revealing a black shirt whose sleeves bunched up a short way past his elbows. He also took off his gloves, and opened his suitcase. After taking out such things as an alarm clock, a charger for his phone, some batteries, and a pill container, he took out what he was looking for: pajama bottoms and a soft red robe. He was just about to change into these when there was a knock on the door, followed by the door opening. The attendant entered and turned the lights back on. As soon as Lupin spotted her, he hid his hands behind his back.
"Lunch will be starting shortly," the attendant announced. "It is requested that you come upstairs."
"What if I prefer to take a little nap instead?" Lupin replied, sounding a tiny bit annoyed.
"It is requested that you come upstairs," the attendant repeated. "By the way, what happened to your neck?"
She was referring to a modestly noticeable scar on Lupin's neck, like that of some sort of recent wound.
"Oh, a Zubat bit me the other day," Lupin answered. This was a lie, but he didn't feel comfortable telling her the truth about it. "Well anyway, I shall be up shortly."
After he was fully dressed again, Lupin entered the dining hall upstairs. Sure enough, the other apprentices were in there, as well as a few random sailors and crew members. Lupin sat at a table by himself right near where many of the other apprentices were sitting. At that time, a waiter approached, carrying a tray of a wide variety of beverages. After serving a banana milkshake to a nearby sailor, he approached one of the apprentice tables, handing out other various beverages and taking orders. He came to Lupin last, placing in front of him a glass of red wine. Lupin gave him a puzzled look.
"...How did you know my order?"
"Oh, just a little gift I have," the waiter replied. "When I look at someone I can tell what kind of beverage they want, or crave in that sailor's case. Or if you want, just a lucky guess. But I'm not so good with guessing food. Now what would you like to eat?"
"Actually, I'm not that hungry," Lupin replied, while taking a brief glance at a menu sitting on the table. "This will do for now."
"The waiter raised an eyebrow. "...Very well then." And then he moved on to the next table.
Minutes later, the waiter arrived again, placing a small pizza in front of Lupin. Again he was puzzled.
"...I didn't order this."
The waiter paused to think a moment. "Oh, forgive me, I have this awful habit of mixing up orders. But don't worry, I'll have them make another one, so you can have this one."
Lupin rolled his eyes after the waiter left. He turned away from the pizza, despising its greasy surface, and started to head out of the hall and back to his room. But before he could leave the hall, the sailor who had the banana milkshake stood up and shouted at him.
"HEY! Whad you dake my vood away vor?" The sailor was shaking his fist at Lupin, and sounded more crabby than anything else.
"You can still have it," Lupin replied, walking away from him. "I didn't touch it."
Then there were thumping noises... the sailor was following him. "Lizen you! I dun lige your addidude. I jallenge you do a Bogeymon baddle!"
"And I don't like the way you talk," Lupin remarked. "Very well, if you insist, I will accept such a challenge."
"Ohohohoho!" the sailor exclaimed. "I az a trong Bogeymon. Ee will grutch you!"
Lupin and the sailor held their battle in a remote corner of the dining hall--the sailor insisted on this so that the crowd could watch his "yumiliading devead". At one end of the makeshift battlefield, the sailor straightened up his sailor's hat, stood up proudly, and took out a Pokeball.
"Go Binzer!"
A Pinsir came out of the Pokeball, clanking his horns together in preparation for battle. Upon seeing this, Lupin smirked and also took out a Pokeball.
"Come on out, Maleficent."
"Hah!" the sailor blurted. "Use Focuz Eneji!"
The Pinsir continued clanking his horns together, leaning forward and staring at his Misdreavus opponent. But this didn't intimidate Maleficent--in fact, she snickered while he did this.
"Why don't you float closer to Pinsir?" Lupin suggested. Maleficent shrugged and inched closer to the oversized beetle.
<"Yeah, you big bully, why don't you attack me?"> she said in Misdreavus language. <"I'm not afraid to die a second time.">
The sailor burst into laughter, pointing at his opponent. "Yeah zats ride, zurrender do my Binzer bower! Binzer, use Vizegrib!"
Pinsir spread his horns wide, gazing at Maleficent and wishing for her demise. But then something clicked in the giant bug's mind... he turned around to face the sailor, an uncertain expression on his face.
"Pinza pinza pinza?" Maleficent knew this meant, "But if I attack a ghost, wouldn't it not be effective?" She nodded in agreement--here was a case where the Pokemon was smarter than the trainer.
"Let's give him a Psywave," Lupin commented, finding this scene rather amusing. (Of course, he couldn't tell what Pinsir was saying.)
Maleficent knew Pinsir was smart for not attacking her, but he still tried to intimidate her, and that was a good enough excuse for her to attack the pest. With a smile on her face and a soft jingle of her necklace, she momentarily closed her eyes, enveloping herself in an aura that slowly became visible. When she opened her eyes again, this aura turned into a pulsing wave of psychic energy, flowing slowly up and down like a mesmerising ribbon. This was as much a spectacle as it was an attack, but it still scored a direct hit to the surprised Pinsir. Knowing that he had no way of doing damage to a Misdreavus, Pinsir ran away, Maleficent chasing after him with more Psywaves.
Eventually Pinsir fainted, and the sailor bowed his head as he returned him to his Pokeball. He rolled up his sleeves, heaved a sigh... and straightened up again all of a sudden, aiming a punch at Lupin's face. But Lupin was able to dodge this punch, after which he started backing away.
"Hey, zad wazzend a vair baddle!" the sailor called after him. After a quick backwards glance from Lupin, the sailor ran after him. Upon reaching him, he grabbed him by the waist with one arm, and went to choke him with the other. Fortuntely, though, Lupin had a little time to react while being choked. His left had reached for something in his pocket, some little gadget or other. Whatever it was, Lupin concealed it in his fist. When his fist lightly touched the sailor's belly, there was a soft crack, and the sailor let go of him, letting out a cry and stumbling backwards. At the same time, Lupin's right hand wandered into the sailor's pocket and managed to transfer a modest amount of money into his sleeve. It was then that Lupin left the hall without saying a word, Maleficent following behind him--though she paused to stick her tongue out at the sailor on the way.
After that rough hour, Lupin finally got into his sleeping clothes, slipping under the blankets on the bed and placing his glasses on the nightstand. Despite what had just happened, he found it easy to fall asleep in that room. And there he would be until the captain made the announcement for the docking in the ferry's destination.
