So it's been forever since I played the Pokemon tcg, lets just say the last cards I bought was from the Team Rocket series. I kept all my cards and was wondering if they would still be effective or even legal in the game today?

Sorry, but cards for that set are no longer legal. Every year pokemon rotates out certain sets of cards in order to change up the format. This year the legal sets are anything after Majestic Dawn. (Majestic Dawn, Legends Awakening, Stormfront, Platinum, Rising Rivals, Supreme Victors, Arceus, Heart Gold Soul Silver, Unleashed, Undaunted, Triumphant)

  • That sucks, but thank you.

It's Nintendo's way of making it so they have both a constant money supply and a competitive game that is easy for newer players to enter and not be discouraged because more experienced players have all sorts of game-breaking cards that were released years ago and haven't been printed in a few years or longer.

That said, the newer cards blow the older cards out of the water in terms of efficiency and power.

Those cards are not legal in official matches, however you can still play with them in friendly matches or trade them with collectors.

    Wow, I had no idea.
There went half my card collection, seeing as I bought most of them back in the late 90s xD

  • LOL well then! I guess that my deck with old and new cards is no good. It's a good thing it isn't my best deck!
What if you want to use old energy cards though? They look differrent (art), but are the same thing.

  • this is unfortunate but i suspected as much, as i've been a magic the gathering player for some time, until recently.

i was into pokemon in the late nineties and into the early 2000's when i was young. gettin back in now. all i ever had was base, jungle, fossil, base 2 team rocket, and a very limited number of gym hero's
